There's a HUGE problem with companies knee-jerk firing people without just-cause, or at least without due-process.

Is this safe to install (I presume it is, given it's academic origin) and, if so, should a small group of us form a committee and jointly try-it-out for a period of time, forming a consensus opinion from our observations?

C# / Re: Some nice C# tutorials by dc member kyrathaba
« Last post by kyrathaba on March 23, 2013, 02:53 PM »
I'm bumping this thread in order to let you know that on My Little Corner of DC, I have updated my C# Tutorials page with corrections and generally some info to bring 6-7 year-old tutorial videos into context, given the time that has elapsed. At the bottom of the main tutorials page, I talk about plans for my next teaching effort.

Women's lib taken to the extreme. Just a couple guys trading nerdy sex innuendos. She shoulda turned around and said she could overhear and found it offensive.  99% chance they'd have zipped it. I mean, c'mon: I could understand someone getting fired over repeated behavior like that in a mixed gender office setting, but a one-off at a conference?

I'd imagine they'll get just about anything they want. If this comes off, it's a major coup for Amazon.

At least it appears this "exploit" was done in the aim of research, not harm. I'm all for raising awareness of our internet-wide vulnerabilities, but I'm also a bit leery when I find out about things like this after the fact. It's like saying, "Guess what, you were one of our 420,000 mice in our experiment and you did just great!"

I have the Dresden Files but haven't yet begun to delve into them. You've sold me on "Ready Player One". I'll look into it.

the action scenes, specifically with regard to combat, are good. I may cease and desist if it gets too lurid. then again, I may increase my reading pace  ;D

I have plenty of RAM on my desktop PCs (6 and 8 Gb respectively), so my question was academic and your responses anticipated. This topic is kinda in the same category of " should I use a RAM disk?"

Living Room / Advice needed re: locking windows kernel in RAM
« Last post by kyrathaba on March 18, 2013, 03:50 PM »
Someone emailed me this, supposedly from a PC-Mag article issued months ago:

Windows willingly swaps its own code from memory to make room for your other programs. But since Windows code is the most often used when you run your system, swapping it can slow things down. You can save swap time by making Windows lock its own kernel in RAM, as long as you have enough memory (512MB).

Note that the Registry controls all swapping of the kernel, and any erroneous alteration in the Registry can make your PC inoperable. Use the program Regedit (usually found in your Windows or WinNT folder). Click on My Computer | Local Disk (C:) | Windows | Regedit.

Expand the listings to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management in the left-hand half of the window. Highlight DisablePagingExecutive on the right-hand side. Then click on Edit | Modify and enter the value 1. Click on OK, close Regedit, and reboot your computer.

Safe/unsafe? Advisable/Inadvisable?

Nah. They're toast. I'm guessing they'll be lucky to get off with a hefty fine and either suspension or disbarment.

But I think it's actually going to come down harder than that. I think a few people are gonna be seeing some "free room and board" before this one is finished. The abuses were too egregious. And there's been too much publicity. Everybody is watching this case. And Judge Wright is already on record as stating that an example may need to be made in order to discourage others from going down the same road Prenda Law thought it could go without consequence.

Nope. These guys are toast. Burnt toast.

And an example needs to be set, and this case has so caught the public and the judicial communities' eyes that it must be used to set that example: this shit will not be tolerated!
