Living Room / War is a nasty business - a business nontheless
« Last post by housetier on June 22, 2006, 05:02 PM »
Bloody Wars!

Yes, I agree: wars are not really good. In fact they are bad for everybody. No exception allowed: wars are bad!

There are many battles being fought all over this planet. One battle sticks out; a huge battle, a complicated battle, a battle with many fronts, more fiends1 than foes. Poetry aside, someone drew a map so you can find out if there is a war going on near you.

1: no typo there

Developer's Corner / Re: CSS Tweaker for helping to clean up CSS files

I just tried again with a handcrafted .css of mine, but it made it only 0% smaller if I told to "leave my layout alone!" Maybe, just maybe I am getting better at this.

Although my .css is the fruit of several hours of hard labor: trial & error, edit and validate & validate.

Thats quite a long read! The PDF has 360 pages. I think I'll tackle it one chapter at a time; have so much other things to read as well.

Just tell me whom to donate to and I will do it!  ;)

Impressive images. I have never seen such a large ship sink.

If they do it right, it will help help build reefs.

Huh? What? When? Who? Where? How?

This Site analyzes podcasts and lets you search them. They didn't find donationcoder though.

I still have doubts...

That's encouragable :-) But at least try before you cry.

I think it's nice for finding podcasts for certain topics; I also think it doesn't cover enough feeds yet.

Why do you make me read this?

Well I found one extra podcast which I didn't know of before.

The Present
I thought Simplemachines was supposed to come out with a CMS,they polled their members about the topic a couple of years back if memory serves me correctly.
-tinyvillager (May 22, 2006, 10:50 PM)

I found a long thread at simplemachines.org which is still active; meaning, the last post is from May 20, 2006.

The Future
WIHTT I'll try to integrate smf with drupal, because I like smf and I love drupal :D Don't hold your breath though!

Since I still like Drupal I was very pleased to find a review. Although not as enthusiastically as I would have written it, the review highlights drupal's strong points.

I use drupal 4.7 myself, but I have to admit that integration of smf won't be trivial.

Even after tinyvillager tried to explain, it is still unclear to me.

For the sake of argument let's assume the following:
I upload my picture to gmail. I ahve several friends using various email services. Now we could have these situations: recipient has/uses:
* gmail web interface
* gmail, using pop3
* any other email account with or without web interface

For each of these three cases, does the recipient see my picture; and if so how did it arrive on his PC?
1237
free-av.com (or free-av.de) is what I install on all my friends' PCs; I can recommend it. It's small, and it stays out of your way. My friends also like that little umbrella thing in tray bar: umbrella opend - virus protected; umbrella closed - not protected. It's so obvious all of #em understood it without explainations.

There are frequent updates both for the free and the commercial version. The free version is not lacking anything. You are just not allowed to use it in a company. For private use it is free of charge.

It has proven reliable in the past five years.

I don't understand how it works though. Does it send the picture with every mail? How does the recipient get ahold of my picture?

Morality makes the greatest battlefield. What is illegal in one country can be totally acceptable in another; what is morally frowned upon by most people could be a legal (think law) requirement.

It is very difficult to *argue* on these grounds. I think it is more precise to make clear that the arguments come from one's personal opinion:
I find this not so good because
or
IMO this is acceptable
and similar.

It's about adding precision in order to avoid misunderstandings.

I don't agree nor do I agree with any of the above posts. If you feel agitated or even offended: that's your own fault!  :harhar: :tease:
1243
I didn't read the thread to the very end. At one point long threads tend to regurgitate old arguments over and over. But my feeling is this:

People who are open to new ideas and differing views, are still open to new ideas and differing views. The others cannot be easily convinded and maybe they don't want to. And then there are many people in between who differ more or less from my views. uhm I just lost track of what I was going to say. Anyway, to quote from one of the five books in Douglas Adams' trilogy "Hitchhiker's Guide to(?) the Galaxy": "People are a problem".

I like it here. People who know me will take this simple statement into consideration. People who don't know me probably don't place any value on my brainfarts ayway ;-)

I didn't see any window movement. Probably because I forbid javascript to do more than change images when hovering over a link.

Again, a very good newsletter.

These summaries are really great.

Hahahhaa I watched that movie, which is absolutely great - a must-see!

I already took his advice and reduced the flairs on my site. But still I think that some visually appealing elements could be very nice. Have to talk to Allen about this.

Well now! Science-fiction was ever my most favorite genre. Let's see how the podcast come along.

Yes I do have too much stuff too read and too much stuff to listen to: newletters, blogs, forums, podcasts, internet radio...

Well I can recommend drupal. And I can safely recommend it because like every other recommendation it does not meet all the criteria :)

The repos have changed too: for xchat2 it is now xchat.cvs.sf.net, as I found out just today. Luckily, I don't get too many stuff from sf.net anymore.

I am really tempted to ignore such provocative statements, because they usually miss the point. I will make an exception, hoping to clear things up:

no source = not a chance to cross compile
no source = I don't like it
no source = I dont't trust it

Please don't try to nail me with terminology, I will easily wiggle my way out of that.
