Another issue to consider is that WMP 11 won't let you import/export licences... as far as I can recall, anyway.

Interesting, thanks f0dder. I checked my Vista 64 bit install and that setting had been enabled, so I disabled it. My XP Pro 32 bit install doesn't even offer the option. I'm not sure if I set that option myself or not - though I recognised it, so it must have been me!

« Last post by Darwin on March 12, 2009, 11:36 AM »
I have WinCatalog 2008 from a previous bits offer (which I've never installed :-[)
they dont have any upgrade info at their site  so I mailed them

I got a very prompt, polite, and helpful mail from them telling me that there's no upgrade price

As in, the upgrade from 2008 to 2009 is free OR you have to pay full price? I'm guessing the former, but thought I'd ask to be sure  :)

Wow, Steven.  I nominate you for poster of the month!  That is good info there.  Thanks.

Yes - excellent post, Steven

General Software Discussion / Re: Quicktime only available with iTunes
« Last post by Darwin on March 12, 2009, 11:34 AM »
Thanks for the Bonjour removal link, cmpm. I'm Apple free on my Windows machines (not on my iBook, though!), having been driven to distraction by iTunes and QuickTime and the myriad of services and plugins that install with them and which are almost impossible to remove selectively after the fact.

Even though I am no longer running either iTunes or Quciktime, it's nice to know that there is a program that will help me rip out the bits I don't need should I be careless enough to install them again in the future  ;D

How do you get it to do all four at once? I have tried BAT and CMD files but it loads the first app and only opens the second app when you close the first app window etc. ?
-Carol Haynes (March 11, 2009, 08:11 AM)

This is how I did it (without a batch file): https://www.donation....msg154388#msg154388

EDIT: blasted quotes keep getting messed up. Not my fault of course...

So that's what happened to Steve Martin's cat! All those years of wearing the bunny ears with the fake arrow through the head and forging Steve's signature in order to cash his cheques must have paid off  ;D

Of course if you build a super computer it's going to be fast. I'd like to know how SSD drives work in your average consumer PC to see if it's worth all the hype to get one.

:-[ Yeah, pretty much what I was trying to say. Fail.

OK - stopped mouth-breathing and thought about this - I went to Dopus and navigated to my start menu and simply highlighted the four shortcuts to Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access and hit ENTER. All four loaded in under three seconds (but more than one - I used my mechanical wristwatch so the timing is not very accurate, but close enough). If I hadn't been timing it, it would have seemed instantaneous  ;D

BTW Nosh - very sweet system

PS added in EDIT: Just to note, in my case this isn't a very fair assessment as my computer has been up and running for about 13 hours and I've used both Word and Excel in that time. FWIW, opening ALL the links in my Office 2007 Enterprise folder took 8 seconds, including clicking on five dialogues - one for OneNote (no, I did not want to create a Notebook) one for Groove (no, not interested in creating a profile), two related to WinPatrol 2007, one for UAC and the other from WP itself wanting to know if I approved of adding OneNote to my system startup folder (nope), and finally an inexplicable error message from Endnote (which is NOT set up to open automatically with Word) :P I also wound up with a second instance of Outlook open...

Cool - thanks, nosh! I'll have to give that a go on my system:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5Ghz 6MB L2 Cache 800Mhz
RAM: 4GB Kingston DDR2
Graphics: ATi Radeon HD2600 512MB GDDR3 800Mhz
Harddrive: Seagate ST9320421ASG Momentus G-Force 320GB 7200rpm

I can start the four Office (2003) apps together in under a second on my system.

Out of curiosity - how do you go about starting them all at once and what are the specs on your system? Enquiring minds wan to know!

Dang, I was pretty impressed! However, given that the computer was running 2GB dedicated video memory and 8 cores, it wasn't that surprising. Made me wonder how this latest generation of SSD's compares to a traditional 7200rpm notebook drive, though... More compelling than the speed, though, for me is the (presumed) be reduced energy consumption, heat generation, and extended battery life.

I thought having 53 programs opened and fully loaded in a matter of seconds was fairly impressive...

As did I!

Thanks for that, Zaine  A nice, balanced read, and some good pointers, to boot! I learned some things and will try them out next time I'm on my iBook.

Ha, ha! Always a silver lining, eh? Not unlike my "Eureka" moment when I realized that I don't acutally *need* a separate pdf viewer after I uninstalled Acrobat Reader
1241
If you are going to use Firefox integration for any PDF reader, please consider installing PDF Download to give you a dialog asking what you want to do, when you hit a PDF.

It will stop unexpected (and sometimes undesirable) surprises, by giving you an option to open in browser, externally, save to your hard drive, or view as html.

Bonus: it also allows you to convert pages to PDF, preserving links.

Yeah, I came upon this yesterday when looking for a plug-in to enable viewing pdfs within Firefox (ie to enable me to use PDF Converter Pro to view pdfs within Firefox...). However, I decided not to download it because I don't mind having pdfs open in an external viewer.

FWIW, I'm always asked what I want to do with pdfs (open with PDF Converter or save), so am not sure what additional benefit PDF Download will give me?

EDIT: Doh! I really need to learn to READ  :-[ I'll look at PDF Download again, for my wife's computer, as I infer that that's the situation to which you were referring!

Korean cuisine features a lot of tofu and I love it... just not necessarily as a snack. Having said that, Yubu Chobap is awesome and makes an awesome snack. There! I said it! Of course, Yubu Chobap is a Korean take on a Japanese favourite, but still...

Just to note - I uninstalled Adobe Reader from my wife's machine and installed Foxit Reader 3 - VERY impressed. I like the fact that it integrates with Firefox... PDF Converter Pro doesn't do this, but I'm not really complaining  :)

Anyone seen the movie yet? Everyone I know who might go with me is 15 or younger (my kids are 4 and 6), so I haven't had a chance to get out to see it  ;D

Done! Thanks mouser for pointing this out as I would have been oblivious otherwise. There's a silver lining, too - I've discovered that PDF Converter Professional 5 is as quick opening up a pdf as the Adobe Reader (ie under a second) so I've got one less application installed

I like:
  • museli mixed into yoghurt
  • any fruit
  • Ryvita crackers (plain or with chunky peanuts-only peanut butter and/or cheese)
  • microwave popcorn (I put 1/3 cup popcorn in a paper lunch bag, fold the opening over a couple of times and nuke it for 1 minute 20 seconds)

Sadly, I am also prone to binging on cookies - with a 4 and a 6 year old in the house these are never in short supply  :o - but have been MUCH better at NOT doing this over the past few months and have lost about 11 kg/25 pounds as a result  :) In fact, you could say that I am skeletal now  ;D

Well... I haven't donated yet  :-[ Truth be told, I'm waiting to see what the Canadian dollar does over the coming weeks - BUT I WILL DONATE THIS MONTH  ;D

Just to note: DonL is busy working on XYPlorer 8, which will feature, amongst other things dual pane  :-*
It's getting chilly here in Hell... ;D

sometime I'm slow, I am intelligent FWIW but sometimes slow
let's see, "Hell" could be life without dual pane? ... but it's getting cold there ... :-\

reminds me of a postcard I bought once with two sillhouette devils drinking cocktails set against a very decorative brightly coloured wallpaper.
The caption at the bottom went "We're in Hell, it's great, there's even a disco!"
but hey ... watch out: it's getting cold there ;)

Just to be completely clear - I think that in the past Don has either explicitly stated or his statements have been interpreted as indicating that it "Will be a frosty Friday in Hell before xyplorer gets dual pane". That was my read on the original comment anyway... I know Don wasn't overly interested in adding dual pane support for a long time but have no idea if he ever said, or implied, the frosty Friday in Hell bit...  ;D
