Developer's Corner / Re: New Game Industry Scholarship for Women
« Last post by Eóin on November 11, 2006, 10:53 AM »
But...

If it's your money you are giving away, you have the right to choose who you are going to give it to. That being said, they have every right in the world to give it to a female if they choose...or someone under 4' 10"...or someone left handed...or to someone of a specific race.

Very very true, I wasn't actually expressing anger at this scholarship idea. But I guess I was just thinking that in general, discrimination like this is tolerated or even encouraged by people who wouldn't accept it if the conditions were reversed.

Just me thinking out loud :) .

Hmmm, the only thing about something like this is that if it were the other way around and a scholarship was being restricted to men only there would be complete uproar with people screaming about sexism and equal rights >:(

Was this a 64bit version of 7zip (sounds like it)? And which compiler was used for compiling it? x86-64 is still pretty new, so not all compilers are very mature yet. Embarassing that performance is *worse*, considering the new registers etc.

Yep 64bit exe on 64bit XP v 32bit exe on 32bit XP. It is possible that the newer version of 7zip are a bit better, I think I'll run the tests again when I get back to that box after the weekend, might post some results if they are interesting (don't worry not in this thread Carol, don't mean to bring things off topic :) ).

As for 32- vs 64-bit XP, I haven't yet seen any reason to install 64bit even though I have an AMD64x2 4400+. It's very little software that can take advantage of the additional address space, and the extra & wider registers don't help that much for much software. So unless you have some software you know can take advantage of 64bit, it isn't worth it yet imho.

I was very disappointed to note that on my box which dual boots 32bit and 64bit XP that the 7zip internal benchmark ran faster under 32bit XP than under 64bit. In hindsight I should also have tested a 32bit exe running under 64bit XP, might do so later.

I never looked into this further, though it would be interesting to check out some other programs.

realise = real eyes realize real lies.

WOW!
i heard all about the spell-checker that's built in, and when i quoted you, it did that little underline thing to show it's misspelled. thats awesome!

Except you forget that Carol speaks British English under which 'realise' is the correct spelling ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: have you tried mind maps?
« Last post by Eóin on October 19, 2006, 05:22 PM »
I used them years ago when I had to learn off an awful lot of information for a History exam. I believe they did work for me and put it down to a combination of ...

a) the act of hand writing mind maps full of relevant doodles and other aesthetic features themed around the topic in question and ...

b) my partly visual memory (not photographic though).

Thank God I gave up learning things off by heart after that 8) .

Oh, I remember.. long, long time ago as Internet was new for me. My friend and I were toying around with IRC trying to see if we'd find a person who'll chat with us. So we log into some iRC channel newbies, or whatever.

"Hi, my name's Peter.... someone want to chat with me?"

None replied.

So we logged off. Changed the nick to "Irene from Sweden" and logged on.

This time we didn't even have to ask... ;D

Thats reminds me of an IRC welcome message a PC mag quoted a good while back, it read along the lines of:

"Welcome to IRC where the men are men, the women are men, and the little boys are FBI agents."

Over at Programming Forums their post editor is WYSIWYG so technically you could you it for writing post for other forums, just turn off the WYSIWYG at the end and copy and paste the bb code. I'm interested myself to hear other suggestions.

Sorry, my mistake. I mustn't have read your first post properly.

Hmm, that's a fair point. If I remember correctly rc1, or perhaps its was one of the betas I tried a while back did install side-by-side with v1.5.*. I guess perhaps they feel this version of FireFox is just about ready to replace the old.

I've just recently installed the FireFox 2.0 rc2 build mostly because I wanted to see the inline spell checking in action. I must say I'm impressed with it overall. The new theme is very modern, and the whole package feels polished and clean.

I had intended to revert to the latest official 1.5.* but am so pleased with rc2 that I'll be sticking with it until 2.0 officially arrives (or an rc3 :) ).

I must say I really like that saying and think it is very relevant. For example there was a time, about six years ago when I was an avid assembly programmer and thought I knew everything there was to know about programming. It's only since then that I've come to embrace such very basic concepts such as exceptions or proper algorithm choice. At least today I have the experience to see just a glimpse of how much there is out there for me to still learn.

I was wrong about a release 1st of october, they just say 6.10 final will be out sometime in october.

Housetier, At the risk of bringing this thread way off topic I'd be very interested to hear what it is about Edgy that you dislike, personally Drapper was the last version of I tried but am considering returning to Ubuntu with the next release.
