General Software Discussion / Re: Must-have apps in the System tray?
« Last post by urlwolf on April 16, 2007, 01:58 PM »
yes, but in my case it's always open, and minimized in the tray.
I assume a browser is one of the things most people have open most of the time, right?

For those of you using Tclock or any other fancy clocks, AND opera, remember that opera widgets are your friends and can save you some memory and tray space :) Same for calendars, timers, counters etc. I saved about 40Mb. They are javascript, so very little CPU/memory overhead!

Does anyone know if XYplorer can have a source code viewer with syntax highlighting like dopus (i.e., in the bottom half of the screen?). I find that really useful.

Lashiec,
What do you do with mp3tag that you cannot do with foobar? I have just started using foobar for tagging, and it looks quite impressive. I thought MM was good at tagging but foobar is much better.
Also, you can download album art using the coverdownloader program through foo_run... which grabs amazon + wallmart. If that's not enough, freedb and discog support! Copying tags from and to filenames is possible too. Never tried mp3tag, though. Is any of these easier in mp3tag?

The problem with the Wand is that if something nasty happens (you forgot your password or you accidentally delete the passwords file), then it's over as it doesn't have a simple 'export' function to CSV or even TXT

Good to know. I'll make sure I keep a backup for that file, updated daily.

Are one of the myriad online spreadsheet web applications not something to look at?
I don't think the  "block row names from scrolling" thingy is easy to implement with AJAX, but that's just my intuition. Have you found any that does this well?

Thanks for your suggestions, lanux, nothing in that thread that I haven't found/ can use... damn, there is NO notepad-like excel clone... spread is the closest, but it doesn't have the one thing I need:  "block row names from scrolling".

I agree that giving up roboform is a small price.
Some more nice Opera features.
  • if the text renders wider than the screen (having a horizontal scroll bar), you can click "fit to width", and problem solved.
  • Too small site fonts? You can zoom with keyboard (+,-), mousewheel, or enter author mode where the fonts are defined by you in your prefernces (default font: I use calibri 10)
  • Middle click gives you the smoothest scroll, so you can eat, talk to the phone etc, while reading your page
  • Super efficient cache. Going back to previous page is faster than in any other browser. It makes a big difference in your user experience.

How do I get rid of (hide) the bottom window?

[ Invalid Attachment ]

You have to click on the small dot in the middle and DRAG up. it works like a drawer.

General Software Discussion / MAC: open source cataloger/tagger, CD-oriented

This is a bit peculiar. Worth trying before paying for a cataloger/tagger, you may find that what you use is already here. It looks really simple.

Welcome Nudel.
What a convincing, polite, well-written post. If I didn't know Dopus (I'm an user since v. 6) I'd run to check the software right now. If soft can make an user as passionate as you, it must be good soft.

FYI, I have contacted support a few times and the asnwer was fast and effective. The forums are really good too. The program is extensible using plugins, and these (extensions and forums/good support) are key features for me.

I have found this thanks to Zaine:
http://www.byedesign.freeserve.co.uk/

It's really lightweight, But it doesn't offer the "block row names from scrolling" feature that I need.

Is there an xl-lite, notepad-equivalent for spreadsheets?
I need that feature that you can drag a corner of the spreadsheet to have a parto of the spreadsheet always visible (e.g., the row names), but nothing fancy.

Freeware preferred :)

Between the new features, there is something called speeddial that looks like another usability hit.

Hmm, I wonder if a joint donation of say $100 between all members here would make things like copy funciton, highlighting, etc, happen.

Anyone wants to post in their forum/mail the author?
1242
Does this speedup thing work with full Acrobat?
1243
Well, just in case people were wondering, mp3 ripping really seems like the objectively worst choice for your music.

So paying money for encoder software that goes into the pockets of Thomson (mp3's legal owner) is a bad idea.

I used ogg -q6, and now flac. Ogg is an excellent format, although right now at HA there are talks that seem to imply that development has stagnated:

F0dder, where do you get that reference version of dbpoweramp? Do you have to pay even if you don't want to use mp3 at all?
1244
Please report on your experience as you play with it more :)
1245
But if your CDs are immaculate, all this EAC-poweramp paranoia is just not needed, right? I just ripped 6CDs to flac using MediaMonkey (I'm pretty it's not as thorough) and the results are pefect.

It looks terribly good to browse large projects! Anyone has any experience with it?
1247
No copy function? Bummer.
I'm still waiting for a simple pdf application that can do proper copy and highlighting (saving the changes; foxit doesn't understand 2-column text for highlighting/copying!) without having to pay $$$ for acrobat.

Since Sumatra is OS, do you think there is a chance we can mob together and donate some $$ to the project so the author implements these?

I'd rather give $39 to an OS developer than buying foxit, since sumatra can be redistributed for free (many people would benefit). What do you think?

Perry, for some reason, when I moved yout addin to C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns, my 'other' favorite addin stopped working.

I can confirm that this is still happening. All addins are dissabled if a drop navigator.xls in that folder (!). Weird, no idea what excel 2007 may be doing different...
Do you have a preference for a Key Combination? I'd lean toward CTRL+ALT+TAB.
Looks good to me :)
