I have had this Braun travel alarm (#1 in the photo - Type 4 768 AB30sl) for 30 years, and it has always worked great. The back falls off and battery rolls out if it falls - which it has done many times - but it hasn't broken yet, and I started putting a rubber band around it to keep the back on better.

I'm still using neat little one that's about twenty years old -- the back has fallen off it, so the battery is held in with a hair elastic. I cant see any brand name on it, but it says 'Made in Germany'. I had given up using it until I realised smartphones are not so smart as I thought, and cannot be depended on (mine anyways).

Good to get a couple of possible replacement recommendations

I downloaded getmail from the link you supplied, but immediately, Windoes Defender said it malicious and not to run it?  Any ideas if it is dodgy?
odd,
MSE has no complaints about it - and they both use the same anti-virus updates

Virustotal says:
SHA256:    7504cd82fc5af60fb14315b222e9c413e746e42c05c86d5096245002d6797d4d

"Cylance" gives it the thumbs down but note (& see Skwire's comments above) --
the file is nine years old and it has been checked there multiple times -- I assume that if there was any real problem with it, it would be commonly known by now

After searching the DC Forum for a Win10 tweak today (2016-11-09), I reckoned that a simple collection/index of pointers to such tweaks would have been useful for me and would have saved me some time and might similarly be useful for other forum members too, so here goes: (We may need a Wiki...)
It's a bit of a tedious manual exercise, but if forum members find that it is likely to be of use, then I shall try to maintain/update the index with any pointers - if members could kindly post the links in comments to this thread.

should be advertised more (maybe when this new CMS gets rolled out? and/or you could put it in your signature?)

And, yes, a wiki would be helpful in this kind of situation...

Oh, and your info: I didn't know that at all. With the google thing, it would have been difficult to NOT mention the political background of it, and it's about spying upon web users, and about even reacting about that spying, by serving the user a made-to-measure selection of content, while this "made-to-measure" is strongly criticizable, so I had either to not bring up this web-usage-related case at all, or had, as I did, bring some background in order to make it fully comprehensible. This being said:

I thank you for your info and will consider anything I bring up here in the light of it; when in doubt, I will not bother this forum with it. (In fact, I had been "motivated" by the recent thread (I cite from memory) here, "When using Chrome, be ready to be spied on.": This was my point of departure for saying and detailing, "In fact, they (= google) even do a lot more than that."
of course,
it is a factor in certain situations.

FWIW I haven't noticed any attempt to reeducate me since watching that video:
as said above they know me well -- I will and do look at a large variety of videos i.e. coming from very different directions. But they also know I mostly look at snooker, so they mostly end up throwing in snooker videos when I'm looking at other stuff, rather than the other way around.

tomos is from Czechia
not sure where you got Czech Republic from. And sounds like you misunderstood my comment -- I'm a native English speaker. (But yes, I speak reasonable German.)

Re the political digression: just to let you know there is a policy here on dc to not discuss politics or religion.
1237
OK, I've got to ask... what are you looking for? What's your desired input/ouput format? And if I can be nosy, what's the purpose of these odd acronyms?

I suspect that, for whatever reason, OP never got notification of replies in this thread.

Have watched the video -- will be interesting to see if I get a similar result: mind you I'm logged in to YT *and* gmail on the same browser, so they know me intimately :-/

Re writing style
Re your writing style:
your posts are always long -- you have a rambling style which is difficult to follow, complicated by the occasional failing of your otherwise very good English. FWIW I am not a grammar fanatic -- my own, as a native speaker, is often poor -- I'm just talking about clarity here. And as said before, I would love a summary of points, either at the beginning or end of long posts.

This vaguely related:

I recently uninstalled AVG for a Windows 7 machine using their own removal tool --
after it had removed AVG, I got this message:

WP_20170715_13_29_58_Pro02.jpg

which (literally translated) says:

An incompatible anti-virus discovered:
Microsoft Security Essentials
We strongly recommend you uninstall it, so that your computers performance will not be adversely affected.

Note I have nothing against AVG, but ironically, on this particular old laptop with crappy cpu, I was removing it because it was slowing down things too much.

ps when you say mine - do you mean you made the skin, or it's the one that you use?

Dog rescues baby deer from drowning:

I've been living here, surrounded by woods, for over ten years, and see deer regularly, but only saw a baby deer for the first time yesterday. Wikipedia says they're born in June (Roe deerw). It stalked off, a bit unsteadily at first. (I surprised it, but didnt go near it.)

Living Room / Re: bicycling suddenly a British speciality?!
« Last post by tomos on July 22, 2017, 02:33 AM »
One of my cycling buddies is considering buying a second-hand Bergamont Vitess 5.0.
What is your view of the bike now? Did you also find a less "bruising" seat for it?

I loved the bike -- was fast, light, solid -- used it mainly going into town - 14 km one way, but also a bit in the woods.

Now I did have problems with the bike -- but they were more to do with me not fitting the bike design, than with the actual bike. Some background:
From years of drawing on computers, my wrists are very, eh, 'sensitive', for want of a better word. I cannot put a lot of weight on them; have to be careful not to work with the hand/wrist in a bent position. I also have minor shoulder problem on one side, which possibly related to hips being slightly out of line.

The bergamot has lower handlebars than my previous bikes, and they are designed to lean on with the wrists bent. With that combination I ended up with wrist problems and neck problems and stopped using it. I was away for three weeks last year, and a friend of mine borrowed the bike -- she loves it and ended up buying it from me -- I got a new camera with the money...

So the bike is still in use and going well after a year -- very hard to say exactly, but has been doing maybe an average of 70km a week over the temperate months (about ten months use since it was bought).

I dont know how much value that info has, also considering I've only ever been a casual cyclist, so would possibly be judging differently to anyone who calls themselves a cyclist.
