Living Room / Re: Sound Recorder freeware - anyone?
« Last post by Tinman57 on January 29, 2009, 07:33 PM »
I use iCool player.  Not only does it play just about any format, but also converts to other formats, rips & burns cd's.  The main reason I got it is because it supports .ogg.
And of course it's completely free, not disabled in any way, and no ads.

I use APC battery backups on all my computers and my 57 inch HDTV system (HDD/DVD, Surround Sound, DTV, VCR).  Only problem I have is when I lose electricity and my backup generator powers the house back up.  The APC's don't like genny power, probably not a clean enough sine-wave, I would imagine.  This is mentioned somewhere in their faqs.  It will kick to battery power back to landline every 1 second until the battery completely dies.
I'd like to find some kind of device that would clean up the power before it goes into the APC to prevent this, but have no idea where to look for such an animal.....

Whoa PhilB, SIV looks very impressive.  I'm downloading it now.  I'll install it and forget about the other ones.  I came across this once in the past but didn't give it much thought, hindsight being 20/20 and all.  lol.  Thanx again...

Anyone know of a "freebie" that will identify your USB ports as USB 1.0 or 2.0?  I've seen several that show you what's hooked up to the port, but not the actual port speed.....

I just bought a Belkin 4 port USB 2.0 to replace my old Belkin USB 1.0, which I have used for more than 10 years without a problem.  The Belkin USB ports are Vista compatible, and has built in drivers even on my old XP machine.  I've been buying Belkin products for over 20 years now and have never had a failure, so I guess you know who I recommend.   :)

Another interesting thing I noticed is Belkin uses some kind of technology (don't remember the name) that allows you to get faster throughput even with the older USB 1.0.  Something about it allocating separate channels for each port, or something like that.   ;D

Post New Requests Here / Caller ID
« Last post by Tinman57 on November 07, 2008, 09:26 PM »
Out of all the freeware apps available, why isn't there a simple caller ID app that does one thing and one thing only, pop up a small window with caller ID information and perhaps the options to hang up (dialup) or ignore?
I've tested a few apps (freeware & shareware that supposedly had this option, but they didn't work as advertised or just didn't get along with the rest of the OS.
I have an app like that which came with my modem (Modem On Hold), but for some reason it stopped showing the caller ID info after SP1 (XP Home), it jut pops up a blank window.  Of course this app was written for 98 & ME and there isn't any kind of update for it that I can find.....

Living Room / Re: Advice: Never use your ISP provided email address
« Last post by Tinman57 on August 15, 2008, 10:14 PM »
I disagree.   ;D  Gmail, Yahoo, etc, those "free" email accounts aren't nearly as secure as your ISP, not to mention every email you send out has ads injected into them and are tracked.  I've been reading for months about Google's privacy invasions through Gmail and their IE/Firefox add-ons.  Did anyone notice that Google just bought the largest ad-server/tracker in the world, ie: DoubleClick?  It's been heavily incorporated into Gmail.  Now isn't that special?

Plus, most ISP's provide at least 5 email accounts, some up to 15.  Even if you only use one (as I), you can change any of your email addresses on-line, anytime you like.

I've been using the same ISP email address for over 12 years now, and my ISP has been bought out 4 times since I first started.

The free email outfits bounce a lot of good emails, their anti-spam options (if any) aren't as configurable as most ISP's.

And as for customer service, do you have a local or toll-free number to call and talk to a technician about any problems you may have with the free services?  I do!

What it boils down to is those "free" email accounts aren't so free when you consider the injected ads and privacy issues.  I think I'll stick with my ISP email address......   ;)

J-Mac, something else to consider in your troubleshooting:

Microsoft Update Verify ClassID – VERCLSID.EXE

A Microsoft security update introduced a new file called verclsid.exe. Verclsid.exe is used to verify a COM object before it is instantiated by Windows Explorer. This file was created by Security Update KB908531 (MSO6-015). This update was intended to fix a vulnerability in Windows Explorer that could lead to remote code execution. More information can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908531/.

Microsoft documents problems caused by this update involving this file at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165. Main problems include difficulty accessing My Documents and other folders when "Share to web" is enabled, problems with Kerio Personal Firewall or nVidia graphics cards, and problems with some versions of Corel Paint Shop Pro.

If you have problems that are not resolved, you might consider uninstalling kb908531 via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Wow - a lot of advice there, Tinman!

I do uninstall the drivers, but not nearly as extensive a removal as you direct.  Actually I have instructions from Falcon Northwest Support, which basically is not more than to uninstall the display drivers. (The Forceware uninstall dialog gives me the option to uninstall everything or to select individual parts to remove; Falcon wrote for me to only uninstall the display driver and nothing else. They're wrong?).

I do have a SoundBlaster card - the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi.  But I never uninstalled its drivers first.

Jim

J-Mac, if the techies say it's OK, then it should be.  The newer ForceWare drivers have much improved, and I don't use the same drivers as you.  However, (and there's most always a however) I have had techies give me totally bogus information in the past and had to find fixes for myself.
One problem I had with an older nVidia driver turned out to be my MicroSoft joystick I had plugged into one of my USB hubs, of all things.....

I've read many techie post about hardware drivers, and most all agree that the slate should be wiped clean before updating.  But with the newer PCI-Express technology this may not be the case anymore.  But if you think about it, it's a heck of a lot easier that reinstalling the whole OS again.  What can you lose, eh?  ;)
1236
Gee, too bad you had to waste all that money on more RAM.  Sorry about your luck.  Sure am glad I didn't have to.
MemTurbo cured my problems long ago.  MemTurbo goes well beyond cache swapping, heck I don't need a program to change those, it's right in the sytem properties unless you have them hidden.  It also contols system and application priorities, boosting some when needed.  But if you already know so much about MemTurbo, I suppose I don't need to tell you anymore.....

J-Mac, I know this may sound obvious, and depending on if your using ForceWare drivers or another, you have to completely remove the old drivers before installing the updated drivers.  But first you have to change your graphics preference to a standard VGA driver.
At one point I had to run one of the Detonator drivers removal programs I downloaded from their website to totally remove everything from the hard drive and registry before I could install the newest drivers, which was the ForceWare drivers.

ANY and ALL existing drivers should be uninstalled and COMPLETELY removed and the system rebooted prior to updating the drivers...Booting into safe mode and remove the drivers from here is the safest and most efficient way to remove the older and or current drivers from the system.

You also may have to  reinstall your monitor's specific driver...during the install of
the video card it may have been reverted to plug and play standard.

Bus speed settings between your card and BIOS and/or other settings may be different.

Your monitor refresh rate may be too low or too high

Go to the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard to download and install the latest MiniPort Drivers (if needed) - this one usually corrects a lot of issues.

If you have a USB mouse that can be moved to PS/2, try using the PS/2 port instead. It may fix the problem without having to perform any of the above solutions.

Only as a LAST resort try updating your system BIOS.

All else fails try using a past version of the drivers. The newer version may be causing a conflict within the system.

A Fresh install of Windows usually correct all issues...especially issues regarding older video drivers that cannot be removed from the registry. This is one of the BIGGEST causes for the
video card to fail. Make sure you back up ANY and ALL important files that are on your system to another storage device.

Some sound cards have to be removed (Sound Blaster Live for instance) from the motherboard and reinstalled after installing the graphics card.  Reason is that it consumes too much of the system resources and does not like to share them.

Even updating your sound card drivers could cure the problem.

With Winblows, there's just too many variables that can cause these type problems....

My old computer I built myself.  I inherited the present HP mochine then maxed it out, and once it's obsolete I'm ripping the gut's out of my old non-proprietary puter and building it with the latest fancies.  I may or may not be using Winblows when that happens.  Depends on where MicoSux goes with the new OS.  I won't touch Vista........   >:D
1238
I'll put it this way, I'm on an XP SP2 machine with only 512 mb of RAM and a 80 gb hard drive.  I'm running a large firewall, antivirus, several port sniffers, AvantBrowser, connection software, MemTurbo4, Slickrun, Magic Defrag, INCD, Creative 3D Audio, and I can't tell you how many other "little" associated apps in the background, and right now I have 292 mb of free RAM available, and that's actual chip memory.  If I did a quick refresh, I'd probably get about 312 mb or more of free'd RAM.  My Current File Cache is 32 mb and my Total Pagefile has 855 mb free.  Before using MemTurbo, I couldn't run all this stuff in the background without bogging down......  I think I'll stick with MemTurbo for quite a while.....

I think ScreenShotCaptor (SSC) was the first program that I bought "contributed to?" on this website.  I went through many screenshot programs, but what one would do the others wouldn't.

Screenshot Captor simply will not capture some screens for me, and in those instances I have to use SnagIt. Scrolling windows, for example.  With Screenshot Captor my entire screen starts blinking rapidly and there's nothing I can do short of rebooting. If I wait it out until Screenshot Captor eventually completes the capture, the pic is not even readable. So SnagIt gets the job of doing scrolling windows.

That problem may be a symptom of problems with my graphics card. (I get a $600+ card in this custom-built POS that cost me more than any other PC I've owned, and I've been battling problems with the card - and Nvidia - ever since!!)

Jim

That is strange.  One of the strongest reasons I use SSC is because it does such a great job of capturing scrolling windows.  I did have a similar problem like you described with another screen capture program that I dumped, and with an nVidia card.  I've always had good luck with nVidia cards, even though I just ordered a new ATI Radeon to update my GeForce 3 TI200 GPU.  The ATI GPU just had such better specs for AGP based computers than what nVidia did.  I don't know who's on top now with the PCIexpress GPU battle.  I'll cross that road when I build another computer system.    :D

I think ScreenShotCaptor (SSC) was the first program that I bought "contributed to?" on this website.  I went through many screenshot programs, but what one would do the others wouldn't.  I actually had three different captor programs on my computer just to cover everything I needed.  SSC basically has all the bells and whistles the others lacked in one package and just blew the competition away.  It's nice to have just one captor installed on my computer, I don't have to remember which one did what I needed at the time.   :)

I have tried many many "boosters" over the years but with poor success.  Mostly they're a bunch of hype.  Then I discovered MemTurbo 4.  It's a very configurable cache manager, RAMbooster, and process handler program that has considerably improved performance on my 2.8 ghz XP computer.  But it isn't freeware, it's commercial.  $19.95

To add my 2 cents worth, I think it's great that Mouser put in this forum.  Many software companies are screwing many people, and it's nice to have a place to warn others.  Where else can this happen?
As far as some place to attack the competition, I would think that Mouser and any other moderators would notice one person attacking a particular company in particular.  And don't believe for one second that most of the software companies don't "moderate" their forums as well to weed out anything that makes them look bad.
About fairness, how about software companies selling great reviews of their products on other forums/web pages to make it look like it was just some average Joe making a comment.  I have come across that little problem myself a time or two.
And lets not overlook the fact that this forum allowed a software representative to add his 2 cents worth.  If the shoe was on the other foot it wouldn't work that way with most software companies.
When software don't live up to it's advertisements, is buggy or like most don't have customer service/tech support as advertised, then what is the recourse when most all of the software agreement legalese state that if you install it (or open it), you accept it as is?
Everything is open to abuse, but with moderation such as this site has, I don't think this will be a problem, especially since you have to register to post.......

Power To The People!!!

OK, that was about a dimes worth......    ;)

I have (in the past) come across some registry cleaners that were more dangerous than anything, which is why I always make a backup BEFORE doing anything with the registry.  Now as much as I hate Symantec, their registry cleaner (2005) works pretty good.  But you really need more than one registry cleaner.  Like anti-virus software, one may not catch something another will.
I also use Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, and I've been very impressed with it so far.  It picks up a lot of stuff that Symantec's don't, plus it backs up/restores the registry.
I've never had either one of these cleaners ask to remove a registry entry that was vital to the system.  I've had them show some things that would affect preferences/history of a few programs, but Eusing also gives you the option to add them to the ignore list and never list them again in the scan.

I'm very careful, even though I trust both these programs, I still check all the entries to make sure nothing important is listed.  I've also heard good things about JV16.  They have a nice suite, but I like to pick and choose apps, don't care for suites too much.   ;)

I filed a complaint with the FTC on Max Alert, the a__wipes....

I do a registry cleaning/system backup every Friday.  Something I learned years ago, the 3 golden rules for computers, they are  1.  Backup.  2. Backup.  3. Backup.
It has saved my buns many times.....

I do know for a fact that a cluttered up registry will bog a computer down to a standstill, just like a fragmented hard drive will do.  I keep my puter running in top condition at all times, and it is faster than greased owl crap.  ;)

The last reg cleaner reviews I read (independent) put Registry Medic below a couple of others.  But that's subject to change every other month as new releases come out.  I never, ever read reviews from the company's web site until I've read independent reviews.  Some of these companies will have their own reviews plastered on a bunch of other web pages that was just an oversized ad, so you have to be careful about that too.  It pays to research, at least most of the time.  Max Alert pulled one over on me for the first and last time....

Another program I use is called RegCompact.net.  It removes all the unused spaces out of the registry, makes it much smaller and faster.  Good program, I use it every Friday like clockwork.   ;)

I'll bet Mouser could hack out a registry cleaner that would blow them all away...  ;)

Hmmm, perhaps some of this should go in the reviews/suggestions section.

Please, don't go by what Wikipedia says.  I can add my own definition in there saying crapola is a delicious dessert.  The AmigaForever website may have the faqs, I haven't visited it in a while.

I can't remember exactly how many co-processors there were, but I think I remember the ECS chipset was supposed to have added another chip, possibly the Gary?  It's just all been soooooo long ago for me to remember it all.  I used to be able to spout off just about anything you wanted to know about them......  Getting old.......   :(

The Agnes, Denise, Paula, Gary?, and 3 others, 7 co-processors in all (and I think 8 in the 1200 and up.  They were all named after the person that designed that chip.  Agnes therefore obviously designed the Agnes chip.
Also, on the Amiga 500 (and perhaps others) motherboard was a paw print which represented one of the engineers dogs that was in the office with them all the time.  lol.
The Amiga OS had all kinds of easter eggs hidden in the system, one of them poking fun at the Apple.  Somewhere around here I have a CD with all kinds of Amiga faqs and the history of the Amiga.....

There was/is a fix for the slow directory access on a disk full of small files.  I have it installed on mine and it makes all the difference in the world.  I can't even remember the name of the program though.....  I even have it on one of my many Amiga floppy disk....
I was planning on getting a Weasel PCI card and plugging it into my pc so I could read my Amiga floppy's, but I packed my puter with all kinds of goodies and don't have room for it now.

Like I said before, I read ALL OF THEIR FAQS on their website, and read 3 reviews, one by them, and no one ever mentioned that you had to buy the software every year.  And now your saying they're hiding it in the Subscription Faq???  How would you know if you even needed a subscription in the first place unless you read through all the faqs?

I have never, and I do mean never, heard anyone ever state that registry cleaners were not necessary.  I don't know what OS you use kimmchii, but with all the Windows OS's I have ever used needed them very badly.  Every tweak guide I have ever read has stated this fact, plus all the professionals that deal with Windows.
Before I started using registry cleaners my computer system was almost at a halt.  After cleaning it all up and optimizing it, it was like getting a new computer with twice the CPU power.  And I can't tell you how many times I have had to use a registry cleaner/fixer to repair the registry that the OS had successfully munged that Windows for some reason wouldn't restore.

On 10/4/2006 I ordered Max Alert Registry Cleaner over the internet.  One year later it came up with a message stating that I had to register it and input a new registration number.  I attempted several times to do this but it only took me to a subscription page.  I didn't want to upgrade the program, just use the registry cleaner that I paid for.
I contacted Max Alert's customer service and they told me that in order to continue using it I had to pay them again for a subscription.
I read 3 reviews on this software, including on their own web site and there was no mention of a yearly subscription, in which I told them this.  They sent me a copy of an order page (not mine) showing at the very bottom was a blurb saying "This is one year subscription and Electronic delivery only".
I never saw this on the order page, and find it very sneaky to put this on the order page to begin with, if it was indeed there.  I researched everything about this software before purchasing it, and even the reviews from other web sites didn't mention a subscription.  This software does not have to access their web site in order to run.
If I had of seen this subscription notice I would have thought it would be for future updates, which I wouldn't be concerned about since it's only a registry cleaner and not an anti-virus or anti-spyware/malware program that has to be constantly updated and would require a subscription.
These people are putting the screws to a lot of people, especially hiding the fact that it's a one year subscription service on the order page (if it existed in the first place) and not on the FAQ page.

I still have a highly customized Amiga 500 and a ton of software in a closet (over 500 games).  It hasn't been fired up in years.  Heck, I even have a digidroid and a digitizing platform for it, external hard drive/4mb ram, fat agnes, doubled speed, dual boot switch (1.3 or 2.1), and a bunch of other stuff that I can't even remember now.  I even have Cloanto Amiga Forever, the software (CD) that runs AmigaDOS on a PC.  It comes with AmigaROM's from 2.1 all the way down to 1.0.    :D
I do miss the old AmigaDOS, it was a fine operating system for the times.  Hard to believe MicroSoft wrote it.  Really hard to believe that they sold the rights to it.  No telling what it could have been if a certain president of C= hadn't of sabotaged the company for $$$.  Ever wonder what Congress came up with on the investigation of Commodore's bankruptcy?

I have seen ads for the New Amiga's, basically a PC with some kind of Amiga board in a PCI slot, or something like that.

I was also the co-sysop of the 2nd largest Amiga BBS system in the U.S. way back when.  Ah, the memories.......
