Thanks for the little review!

That's too bad.

I'm not sure if I'd hold my breath hoping for wine miracles. But who knows. From what I saw, it doesn't seem close to succeed for OneNote 2003, let alone 2007. Although CodeWeavers' wine seemed to be close to work with 2003 :

That was in 2006.

Wow, interesting quest, urlwolf!

Have you tried http://basket.kde.org/ ?

There's a nice review about it there : http://micrux.net/?p=54

I just came across this thread. I was interested in Whizfolders and followed a link from a lifehacker article to this page. Very interesting. Seems the thread stopped around xmas. I thought I'd fire up a note to see if folks are interested in keeping it going.
-philosopherdog (April 19, 2008, 08:49 AM)

Why not!   ;D

The one thing I found a bit disappointing about this discussion was the rather brisk dismissal of InfoSelect. InfoSelect, despite its many flaws, is probably still the most powerful note programs around. It can handle a tree structure with both automatic and manual tagging, filtering of tags and blisteringly fast search as you type. One thing that's very nice about it is the ability to float any number of windows even outside the program and pin them. Of course the program is a bit pricey and it does have some bloat (but you can shut off email support and other things). IS can readily split longer imported .doc files, which I haven't seen any other program be able to handle quite as powerfully.
-philosopherdog (April 19, 2008, 08:49 AM)

I agree completely. And I should have a look at Info Select again. It's a very very powerful app. However, when I last tried it (a long time a go), it didn't seem to be that great for palm syncing (one of my requirements at the time) -- even with the Info Select palm application (according to web reviews)-- , it could not easily integrate with my GTD system, the calendar was ugly and not convenient (IMO), the drag and drop was not always very intuitive, it became a bit slow when using huge databases (it wasn't mine, but a friend's, for testing purposes), web capturing wasn't great, and it didn't do what I was looking for in terms of data structuring and displaying (as described there). It also felt a bit alien and didn't fit well with my other office applications.

My opinion might change if I'd try it again though.

Recently I've been using Evernote 2.2. It's amazing for webcapture, and I love the tagging feature. But like others have observed, the fact that you can only display your list chronologically is a serious limitation. But it's superior to Onenote by miles.
-philosopherdog (April 19, 2008, 08:49 AM)

Comparing EverNote and OneNote is tricky, but, like you, I don't like OneNote and the way info is organized (in pieces which are hard to have a global view of). Some aspects of OneNote are great, but others are just too inflexible for me.

BTW, EverNote allows you to display your list in other ways, not only chronologically. If you go into view-->note list, and click on the "title" heading of the note list, all notes will be ordered alphabetically by their title.

For me the ideal notetaking application would build on the strengths of MS Word. I would love the power of Word, especially Word's outline view, and styles. From there all I would need is the ability to tag paragraphs is unlimited ways, and the ability to filter my information and search it quickly with the ability to display this either strictly according to my paragraph tags or according to some combination of tags and headings. Anyhow, right now I still don't see anything more powerful out there than Infoselect, although I'm checking out SQLNotes and hoping this will be it!
-philosopherdog (April 19, 2008, 08:49 AM)

I've been discussing that matter there. I've personally kept using Word for most of my stuff. But, recently, I've started to move some of my work related data and personal research on SQLNotes.

As you probably found out by now, I'm a pretty big fan of SQLNotes... even if it's still in beta and there are still some small bugs here and there, and some days I'm mad at it.  ;)

If Pierre (PPLandry -- SQLNotes' developer) sees that many people need such solutions ("writer" oriented), he might put more energy into the MS Word integration into SQLNotes -- that will be an amazing step in terms of usability. (But because the calendar is coming real soon, together with gantt charting and other goodies -- and this is taking a lot of development time --, MS Word integration will have to wait a bit... from what I've heard, it's already functional, except for some little quirks here and there).

I'm convinced though that very soon (in a few months) SQLNotes will be able to do exactly what you're describing ("tag paragraphs is unlimited ways, and the ability to filter my information and search it quickly with the ability to display this either strictly according to my paragraph tags or according to some combination of tags and headings.") and... probably even more than what you actually thought was possible.

As I said, I've started to use SQLNotes to structure big amounts of data, like teaching planing (with all the infos on each student, etc.), Personal journal and mood diary, Theater Research, Software reviews, personal finances, etc. In terms of flexibility, filtering, etc., I find it superior to Info Select. There's also a coherency to it that I prefer... Of course, there are a few things missing (like palm syncing -- coming with Outlook syncing--, alarms...) so I can't fully use it now. But after seeing many solutions on the  market, I'm now a "believer"... And I'm not the only one : superboyac who started this thread is actually pretty much sold too, tomos, and maybe others...  ;D Yes, The learning curve can be a bit steep, but the basic principles are in fact fairly simple if you take your time to understand them. SQLNotes is indeed very flexible and there's almost always a way to do what you want to achieve, even if you thought that it wasn't possible at first...! So, as a research tool, I think that SQLNotes will be ideal (imagine : mind mapping is coming too, but this will take a bit more time). Anyways : together with MS Word, EndNote, X1/Archivarius and my own filenaming AHK scripts, it makes a great combo!

Of course, there are other solutions, and I'd be very interested to know how you plan to use Info Select if you decide to use it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Vista Aero vs. Linux Compiz
« Last post by Armando on April 15, 2008, 01:18 AM »
I can't speak for Compiz, but I rely heavily on AERO anymore to keep my workflow going (open ~15+ windows and try to talk to 5+ people online at once and see how far you go before you ponder insanity). :tellme: Several applications I use rely on the AERO interface to run (Switcher, for example). I hate having to use an XP machine anymore because I lose not only the "feeling", but also the capabilities that I have to utilize. No little pop-up images of programs in alt-tab or over taskbar buttons. No 3D window flipping. ObjectDock window previews don't work without AERO. The list goes on. And plus, it is just way more eye-catching than a big blue taskbar (or the gray one on Xubuntu). :)
-wreckedcarzz (April 14, 2008, 06:40 PM)

That is all fine if you bought your computer/laptop this year. Compiz-fusion is much more "old hardware" friendly than aero, and, yes, compiz is damn fluid (and IMO, MS should be ashamed of Aero... All that money for... zzzzwwwaaaattth??). In any cases, I like/am used to my old windows classic theme... sorry!  :-[

[off-topic] I haven't been using Linux a lot recently. Like Carol and others, I'm following the progress but have become a bit tired of trying to use it on a regular basis -- haven't got to many hardware problems with my dell Inspiron 6400 (really -- see my comments on that subject in another thread), but there are these software I just can't stand NOT having.  :-[  However, I'm not loosing hope... To be fair, I find that Linux and OpenSource software have made incredible progress in the last 8 years. Really. Much more than windows, I'm pretty sure (compare the last PCLinux OS, Ubuntu or Mandriva with Caldera's Open Linux, or the old RedHat and Suse... And compare Windows NT 4.0 with XP/Vista. See which one progressed more... in terms of user friendliness, flexibility, stability, security, etc.). So I'm still hoping. Like Carol said : "Actually that is the point - I DO WANT LINUX."

And just for the sake of healthier (desktop) computing... Linux is an incredibly important player. No? [/off-topic]

PS : BTW the blue screen at the end of the video (zaine's link)... priceless. Buggy closed source software ? You bet. I've had sooo many bugs in software that I've paid for. Let's talk about those... Shall we ?

Too bad the entire world wasn't colonized by England, and all previous history/culture/LANGUAGE burnt :p

:) Ahah. Yes. It makes it pretty complicated. Sometimes I wouldn't mind getting rid of French -- I'm not to attached to the thing. Uselessly intricate.

Living Room / Re: Offline Computing :The End
« Last post by Armando on April 12, 2008, 07:02 PM »
to me offline computing usually equates enduser control. As soon as computing is online, endusers potentially loose control (at least partially) of : 1-performance, 2-data and privacy, 3-flexibility, 4-software features/familiarity, . This is why I stick to offline stuff as much as possible, even if in the future more online computing is unavoidable.

PS : and IMO offline computing will ever die. To think that it would die would be a bit like saying that because you start interacting with other people, you completely stop spending time on your own.

Iphigenie, this should be easily fixed, fortunately, with a renaming program like BRU (replace all ".mp3.mp3" by ".mp3")... Of course, this is probably not the point... I understand.
1213
And thinking also of eventual paid jobs (not that I'm even thinking of getting paid doing that -- just mentioning) -- I imagine that knowing certain languages will allow one to fit better in the current programming... errrr... "economic ecosystem"?

I tried reproducing the problem again (with ccleaner) and I can't. hummmm. Anyhow : if/when it happens again, I'll try this :

Ctrl+F5 will do a full reload of the page (bypassing the cache). Try that before restarting.

I would soooo love to be able to post a dev. build here because the new stuff is just so good... Give me a little time and I'll come back with some goodies for the DC community!

Actually, come to think of it, I should get them to push the version to v2... The new toys are far more than just a tiny addition.

Renegade, do you know what's happening with ALShow?

Year_Month_Day seems like the way to go for any classification, whether folders or files. Stuff get all mixed up otherwise -- years don't repeat, but days and month do, so it makes more sense.  :)

In a slightly different context C# and ruby were also mentioned by several people. f0dder said Ruby might still be a bit young (but it does receive much praises). C# seems to be a good choice too, according to veign and PPLandry (although for Linux, probably not as much even if there's mono?). I'm not trying to hijack the thread here, just trying to get as much info as possible from the experts...  Hopefully, Brandon and others will find it useful too. :)

Interesting.

I tried the lazy way... I decided to use the "ReRun" AHK application by skromel (reruns any atart up application that's not running). Unfortunately, I ran into a BSOD. My guess is that rerun tried to rerun some already runing programs (like my firewall : Online Armor) -- and gave me all kinds of errors before finally BSODing.

Anyhow, I'm still trying to find an easy way to stop or pause a bunch of apps while my laptop is on battery power, and (semi manually) restart them all as soon as I replug it. If I don't find anything, I might just try writing a little script with everything that's been proposed in this thread. The problem is of course to close these applications that need to be closed via the system tray (or else... they won't close)... I guess I could also use some kind of safe  AHK  "kill" command directly on the processes -- will  have to do some research.

Hey, thanks for noticing, lanux! You're a real cyberspace brother.  :)
1223
Yes, that could be it.

Yet, I don't understand all the visible repercussions of this hypothesis...

I just restarted firefox and it seemed to work again... and then, restarted it yet again (just for the sake of experimenting)but this time cleaning my personal stuff using the firefox built-in security "clear private data"... After that (and it could very well be that it's totally unrelated) when firefox fired up, everything seemed ok. Then I clicked on a DC link inside a perfectly formed DC page (loaded when I started firefox : I have the previous sessions saved)   and... oops. No more fills and borders. Could it be that the "session saving" system saves all the pages somewhere else too and that further complicates the graphics  (local cache) retrieval matter? No idea.

Anyhow... I don't have more time to try elucidating that perticular bug this evening, but I'll probably try more stuff tomorrow. I'm intrigued. I'll also do a search on the WWW.
1224
OK. f0dder, as usual you seem to be onto something here.  :) I cleaned the cache with ccleaner and... guess what? Yes.
That's it. What's your take on why it does that?
1225
I do use CCleaner once in a while, but never tried to manually locate the firefox cache.  As you probably know, CCleaner has an option of cleaning firefox's cache, and this could be the problem. Let's try...
