General Software Discussion / Re: File Sync questions
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on May 13, 2008, 07:09 AM »
I use a mixture of Sync'ing and Backing up.

  • I use DSynchronize to sync between desktop and USB Drive: This is great for RoboForm, etc that I carry around with me.
  • I use Backup4All to backup my "documents" to a RAID1 NAS
  • I also keep my photos on the RAID1 NAS
  • I use Backup4All to backup essential information (finances, tax, etc) to a private area on my Web Space

I had a look at DropBox, etc, but I've got a PHP script that I can use to get at my Backups/Files on the server from anywhere, so I didn't see the need.

General Software Discussion / Re: roboform2go or sticky password?

All encrypted here in both versions. I just tested a fresh install in a virtual machine and it is the same there as well. Both sets encrypted.

Thanks Josh: I was going to test the portable version but I left my USB Drive at work  :-[

As Carol said: it's what I would have expected

I'm not sure if you're talking about the removable version but definately for Roboform Pro that is not the case on my system. I just opened a few logins in a texteditor and they're definately protected.

Must be RoboForm2Go (as the title says), as I just did the same and the files are all encrypted.

I'd like to strongly disagree  >:(

Most vitamins sold in grocery stores have not been proven to do anything but people still buy them.

This is nowhere near accurate: the main benefit is by moving money from the customer's bank account to the manufacturer's bank account by way of the merchant's bank account which trims a little bit of the profit off, and thereby keeps the economy moving.

:D Sorry: couldn't let that one pass without some light-hearted clarification.

Funnily enough, I've got a project at work to turn some staffing spreadsheets into an Access database  :D

It's sort of nice to do it the other way around, but it's a bit of a leap for the users who keep asking questions like "why can't we just add a note to the report here...?"

Never mind - seem to have fixed it. Not sure how but it seems to work!
-Carol Haynes (April 25, 2008, 08:43 PM)

From memory Carol, FF and IE handle image borders differently. Deozaan's suggestion:
I'm not sure on the exact CSS method, but in the <img> tags you can add (for example) <img src=sheep.jpg border=0> to get rid of the box. My example isn't xml compliant, but I think you could just add a border=0 to the CSS for img tags.

will work for all browsers, except if you put it in the IMG tag it should be border="0", not border=0.

Or you could add something like
Code: CSS [Select]
  1. a img {
  2.     border:none;
  3.  }

which will remove all borders from images in links from your page.

Edit: simpler solution added  ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Backup4All FTP Problems
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on April 25, 2008, 11:19 PM »
Right now I'm a happy person, because I did find a solution (to my problem at least ;D).

Right now I am too!  :D

The Backup4All developers identified that the FTP Server was not responding correctly to a SIZE command sometimes, they've amended their application and it works a dream!!

Mind you: it doesn't answer any questions  >:( Apparently it's a standard Windows2003 & IIS install, so why would it be mucking up just with Backup4All, or are all other softwares taking a similar approach to get around that "bug"??

But, anyway: the upshot is that the problem is fixed (and all the Help Desks were very helpful too)!

What you're asking for can be achieved with an HTML ImageMap (please read the article), but basically you display the image and define areas as "hot zones" that can be used to do many things including opening a new page.

Here is an acceptable tutorial too.

Then, depending on how complex your map areas are going to be, you may need some graphic software to do the Map generation part (which is easier if you are drawing on screen). There are a lot of editors that can do this, e.g. GIMP with a plugin. Personally I use PhotoImpact, which is acceptable.

Hope that helps.

mainly as some programs i use dont have menu's there just a title bar, would be handy to have a menu there so can load notepad or something else quickly

It's not what was originally asked for...but then again FileBoxExtender doesn't add icons to all windows (does it  :-\?)

KO Approach will let you set up specific folders and items that can be accessed from the title bar of an Explorer window:
folder_menus.gif

I don't use KO Approach at the moment, but I when I did it was very handy. There are a couple of other useful plugins for use in Explorer as well.

I'm not sure what this policy is meant to do though, as I thought that data storage at $x/month would be worth the same to them as a html storage at the same $x/month? Where do they lose out with just data storage, or is it just data storage is worth more than a website?
-Perry Mowbray (April 21, 2008, 03:37 AM)

It basically increases their costs by increasing the average amount stored on each account. the amounts of space and bandwidth they quote cannot be economically provided at the price they charge. They rely on many customers not using much - and it is the average usage that decides their actual cost base.

Thanks, but I meant I don't understand the difference between hosting a website and putting your private backup files on the space?

try an extension like 'IE tab' or 'IE Tab lite' which will use the IE rendering engine in Firefox.

That's what I do too.

Ditto

Although, I've used both as well, but ended up a Maxthon only user before switching to FireFox2. IETab works great for me.

I suggest getting a hosting account from Dreamhost, which comes with over a 100GB of storage space that grows weekly. Then, use a program like Super Flexible File Synchronizer to regularly update your remote date with the local one. The real problem is that depending on your upload speed and size of data, the initial synchronization can take a while. I have over 20 GB of personal data alone.

This is not entirely within their Terms of Service which states at point 6:
[attachimg=#1][/attachimg]

I only became aware of this recently with my host Lunar Pages and a few problems I've got with Backup4All, they kindly pointed out that they had a similar policy.

I'm not sure what this policy is meant to do though, as I thought that data storage at $x/month would be worth the same to them as a html storage at the same $x/month? Where do they lose out with just data storage, or is it just data storage is worth more than a website?

Yes that's what I did too. J-Mac was talking earlier about changing his modem though so it would make sense to change it for a Gigabit version if possible.

To really benefit though you need to get a Gigabit router and wire up your house ;) ;) ;)
-Carol Haynes (April 18, 2008, 02:40 PM)

Don't know if it's "really"... I'd think I'd term it "really truly"  :D

I purchased a new NetGear switch for the growing number of Gigabit items on the network, but kept my existing Modem/Router that was only Megabit. I'd only recently replaced my Modem anyway, so it didn't seem right not to get my money's worth out of it. So all the computers and the NAS are connected by the Gigabit switch, which seems to work well.

Have you tried using it as a printer server? If not is there any chance you could try it when you get it back and let us know how it works out?
-Carol Haynes (April 18, 2008, 06:04 AM)

I certainly can...

Actually I have a NetComm NP3680 MultiFunction Server that I was not too unhappy with, although it was only Mb. I used to have a multifunction printer (Epson Stylus CX5300), but it has recently died, but it worked well as you could simply spool to the printer or any computer on the LAN could take ownership of the printer and thereby gain access to the other functions (scanning, etc).

I believe that the Synology does not fully support Multifunction printers... but I'll need to re-read their forums before getting a new printer. I've got a separate scanner so I don't think that I really need the printer to scan: but it's amazing how handy the "photocopy" functionality is!

I was really happy with it, still am really except that the manufactures have it because it kept losing the RAID1 sync after a power down and power up.
-Perry Mowbray (April 17, 2008, 05:46 AM)
Just to follow up on this (because I'm pretty impressed  :D ), Synology just emailed my supplier:
One component of the old DS207+ isn't stable. To compensate your client, we change a new DS207+ and the testing results show this issue is gone.

Note: that test was with my HardDrives -- so I know it'll work when I get it back home!

I'm pretty impressed: that's less than a week since it left my front door on it's way to Taiwan, and it's on it's way back home! Isn't that the way life should be?

My experience is that the version of Samba on the linux machine can pose problems (I have the exact same problem here in a "mixed" LAN network, only SyncbackSE is able to make backups)  :(  Still, I'm looking for an answer for this one.

That's interesting. I didn't find any problems backing up to my NAS (once I got the temporary folder set correctly)  :)

Yes, this is definitely driving me crazy...

Are you using Passive mode FTP (http://www.backup4al...m/passive-mode.php)?  Passive mode works much better when going through a NAT router.

Definitely Passive. Even tried Extended Passive.

The dev asked me to try Active, but it didn't get off the ground.

Thanks MerleOne: but no  :(

My best guess at the moment is some incompatibility between B4A and another programme running here... I'll just have to take some time and find it... tomorrow

General Software Discussion / Backup4All FTP Problems
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on April 17, 2008, 06:32 AM »
This has been a major pain  :'( , and I'm only posting here in case someone has bumped into something similar and found a solution.  :tellme: :tellme: I've been in contact with the Backup4All developer, the Hosting provider, the router manufacturer  :( and we seem to be running in ever diminishing circles with most people excusing themselves, understandably, and saying it's not their responsibility.

OK: What's the story:
I've got a paid-up latest version of Backup4All Pro that I'm using, amongst other things, to back up off-site, via FTP, to my Windows hosted site at LunarPages.com.

No problems at all locally. Plenty of FTP problems though. B4A almost seems incapable of overwriting a file, not all the time, but when it fails (99% of the time) it always fails when it's trying to write a file that exists on the FTP server. It'll do an initial backup and FTP it to my site without problems. When I do another backup, it'll successfully FTP the next *.zip but fail with the catalog.

The B4A devs have investigated the log files and catalog and said the failure is caused by:
The problem is that the FTP connection is interrupted during the backup.
-B4A Developers

I tested B4A using some free FTP space over at 0catch.com and it performed fine without problems, using exactly the same backup job (just changing the destination).

I tried the FTP backup to my site with SyncBackSE and it performed without problems (obviously using the same FTP account: therefore it's definitely not permissions).

So I think I can presume:
  • It's not a router issue as SyncBack works on my site, B4A works on 0catch.com and Filezilla works on my site.
  • It's not a permissions issue as SyncBack works fine.
  • It's not my site, as SyncBack works on my site as does Filezilla
  • It's not B4A, as it works on 0catch.com

It can only be the combination of B4A and my site??? Is that possible  :-\

I recently purchased the +207 and put 2x 1Tb drives in RAID1.

I was really happy with it, still am really except that the manufactures have it because it kept losing the RAID1 sync after a power down and power up.

But apart from that, it has a stack of nice features at an extremely reasonable price. I've also got to say now that the service is good too: organized for the UPS couriers to come and pick the device up and take it back to Taiwan so they can check out the syncing issue.

Firmware upgrades seem to be quite regular as well.

Carol: the eSata port is for a HD to use for backup, expansion, etc. as can the USB ports. I have not got to try that yet, but I do have an external USB HD waiting.

You know what, this is something I've always wanted. Many times I'm downloading something, or saving a file, that I' already have. I want this sort of thing integrated in the file system/Explorer so that when I try to do a file operation it can tell me that the file exists, and where it is.

FDM does that for me, though I'd assume that most download managers would as well. I get a pleasant surprise when initiating a download it pops up and says that it exists and did I want to continue  :D Then I have to try and figure out why I'd forgotten/not done anything with the file  :-\

It just means that I need to keep the files in one place.
