Developer's Corner / Re: Developer Discussions
« Last post by kyrathaba on April 02, 2013, 08:51 AM »
I've noticed the decline. I figure it's probably just a temporary trend. I know that I myself go through phases where I don't bother much with the computer at all, much less programming. But then the bug will bite me again, and I'll be "turned on" for a few months, and sometimes even post here about my projects and ideas.

There definitely has been a decline in developer discussions. Given the complexity of individuals and their daily lives, it's got to be the case that many factors play into this. I predict we'll see developer discussions wax, rather than wane, again, at some point.

Neither worked, but thanks to both tomos and IainB for their efforts. I do have 5.0 Gb at Box.net, and (although I don't like the service or interface nearly as much as Box) I have 50.0 Gb of cloud storage at www.adrive.com. Since it's convenient from my tablet, I also have cloud storage with SkyDrive and Google Drive. Oh, and of course Dropbox. Everyone has Dropbox, right?

I'm so worried about what's hapenin' today, in the middle east, you know.
And I'm worried about the baggage retrieval system they've got at Heathrow.
I'm so worried about the fashions today, I don't think they're good for your feet.
And I'm so worried about the shows on TV that sometimes they want to repeat.

I'm so worried about modern technology.
I'm so worried about all the things that they dump in the sea.
I'm so worried about it, worried about it, worried, worried, worried.

I'm so worried about everything that can go wrong.
I'm so worried about whether people like this song.
I'm so worried about this very next verse, it isn't the best that I've got.
And I'm so worried about whether I should go on, or whether I should just stop.

Okay, I'm attaching a zip archive of 16 of Cory Doctorow's books. Most are in .mobi format, but three are .azw files (native Kindle format). If you have a Kindle or use a Kindle app of some sort, you're in good shape. Otherwise, there are converters out there, such as Hamster, that can do conversion to different formats.

Here are the titles:

A Place so Foreign.MOBI
After the Siege.MOBI
All Complex Ecosystems Have Parasites.azw
Content.azw
Craphound.MOBI
Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom.MOBI
Eastern Standard Tribe.MOBI
Ebooks_ Neither E, Nor Books.MOBI
Home Again, Home Again.MOBI
Little Brother.MOBI
Nimby and the Dimension Hoppers.MOBI
Overclocked.azw
Return to Pleasure Island.MOBI
Schnipsel.MOBI
Shadow of the Mothaship.MOBI
Super Man and the Bug Out.MOBI

Siddhu, are you still around? If so, are you still interested in this coding snack request? I can do this: by writing the program in C#, and using FileSystemWatcher. However, from the way you've described what you want, all you end up with is a text file listing the changes that occurred. A version control system gives you that, plus so much more, in that you can obtain/recover the state of your directory-tree from any given point in its history of changes. Have you researched version control? Or, perhaps a document management system, if your directories are mainly going to hold docs/pdfs/etc.

no reason he shouldn't get the same overinflated payouts as all of the other winners in this non-nonsensical lottery game we call capitalism.

That's an illusion in most states, as most are at-will work states.  For any reason, or no reason at all, you can be fired.

You're right. Legally in most states, as is the case here in Kentucky where I work, companies can fire at will. However, in the company I work for, a community mental health provider serving ten counties in my region of the state, several employees who have, over the years, been terminated, have successfully sued my agency for settlements in the tens of thousands of dollars. How, I don't know. They have no legal basis, right? Yet, I assure you, several former employees have successfully done so. I assume my agency settled because they figured it would be less expensive than a drawn-out legal battle.

I still feel that, although most states give employers the legal right to fire at will, that morally-speaking there are many instances of wrongful-termination. On the other hand, I'm sure the laws have well-served some good employers, making it easier for them to run a business when they get a "bad egg" employee.

Apparently he was financed since age 15 to create a startup to work on his Summly idea, backed by the likes of Ashton Kutchner, Yoko Ono, and some Hong Kong billionaire. I'd love to know the nitty-gritty backstory...

I'm sure this is just Yahoo's way of co-opting him, and being able to capitalize on the future of his tech innovations.

Google, destroyer of ecosystems.. And what he describes in Google's MO is startlingly familiar.  Quite similar to what MS used to do.

+1 !!
