Didn't work in Firefox or Chromium for me but Chromodo worked fine.

to my (lack of?) understanding, it's merely a demo

Turn it off  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: What Android Apps Do You Use?
« Last post by 4wd on October 19, 2016, 11:29 PM »
Turned off app update notifications and just have it set to Auto-update over Wi-Fi only and let it get on with it.  A couple of apps I have auto-update disabled for so I can see what's going to happen.

Some new apps:
Notion Intelligent Email - created by the same people who did Copy
SD Maid - System cleaner
GPS Logger - GPS track logger, GPX export
TrackChecker - Parcel tracking
Yandex.key - OTP logins to Yandex + 2FA
SoundHound Infinity - Music Search (Was App of the Week for 0.20 at some point)
Tasker - Automation  (Was App of the Week for 0.20 at some point)

Xposed - with the following modules
Amplify
Hide Emergency Button
MaxLock
Power Nap

guys is there a chinese store price comparison search engine or something?
I need to know which chinese offers the best deal, but it is reliable as well (preferably via paypal)

Sellers: Mentioned here + a lot of info.
OzBargain - Geared towards finding the best deal :)

And any store on AliExpress is subject to the AliPay system which is arguably better than PayPal.

Use DHL delivery if necessary if you want guaranteed tracking.

The stores I use, the last three sites provide cashback if you go through their site and purchase from the end store, (providing they list it), after a verification period.  Cash back amount depends on store.
eg. The RN2 cost me ~US$130 at DealsMachine a year ago, going via TopCashback I received US$13 back in the form of a Amazon Gift Certificate, (my choice).

When trying to update MediaInfo from 0.7.61 to 0.7.89 today, the update had problems and I had to reinstall the previous version I had. Has anyone here had this problem?

What is MediaInfo and what does it have to do with Windows 10? This probably belongs in a new thread.

It provides information on media  :)  ie. codecs, bitrate, bit depth, etc, etc

2016-10-16 16_29_22.png

MediaInfo Lite worked fine for the 7-10 days I had the Anniversary Update installed.

The ones in the background give the impression that once one pulls the inner portion out, the inner portion will stay pulled out (i.e. not spring back).  Is that correct?

Yes, that's right, you have to push it back in.  There is a couple of other animgifs on the site that also show closing it.

I got a little bored with using the plastic card holders the bank provides for free ... who knows how long this will last but it is a bit more friendly on pocket linings :)

Plus if it is coming up on every boot it may be in the TM Startup list.

Or Autoruns if you're stuck on an earlier Windows, (pre-8.1 IIRC).

Since you know what the others are, wouldn't it be easier to exit their programs/services and then see what was left, (in TaskManager), that you don't recognise?

BlackBird.

I think Cockatoo would be more on point.

General Software Discussion / Re: Data Disk recovery software
« Last post by 4wd on October 11, 2016, 07:36 PM »
would creating a sector by sector image of the whole drive be a good idea first ?
Then you can mess around all you like with different recovery programmes, if the HD dies, you have a copy.

If you make a sector level copy you don't need the original HDD to recover from, just mount the image (or plug in the HDD you made the clone to) and perform the recovery on that - no need to stress the original HDD any further.

Try Recuva first, if it can't see them then try PhotoRec which is probably the best freeware data recovery tool out there atm - PhotoRec is not restricted to just images.
May be a good idea.
Just because Recuva is not free. And the free version only repair some gigabytes. 2 GB I think.

The disk is 2 TB

The difference between Recuva Free and Pro is you don't get support with the free version and I think the Pro version offers to create a VHD before doing anything, something you can do for free with other tools.

2016-10-12 11_27_15.png

The free version of EASUS is limited to 2GB of data recovery.

if that's the case, then why would they exclude it?  Makes little sense.

Why should Home users have that kind of easily accessible power is more likely the reason.  Getting to the Group Policy Editor is simple, getting the information on what registry settings do the same thing takes a little more effort.

Just another arbitrary decision by a corporation in order to maximise profit in some way ... or more likely, "We know how to protect users from themselves, think of all the support we'd have to provide for Home users when they screw up their Group Policy settings or forget their Bitlocker password, that'll cost us bucket loads, just remove those items from the Home edition."

What's the reasoning behind not having Bitlocker available in Home editions?
Don't normal users have data to protect from prying eyes?

General Software Discussion / Windows Group Policy settings
« Last post by 4wd on October 09, 2016, 08:06 PM »
Looking through back issues of APC (Australian Personal Computer) I found this little bit of info that might be useful for those stuck with Windows Home versions.

Normally the Group Policy Editor isn't available for Home editions (it can be hacked in) so calling gpedit.msc doesn't work but since it's just a frontend for registry settings, you can still effect the same changes through regedit.

Windows 10 ADMX spreadsheet - lists all the registry settings and what they do, courtesy of Microsoft.

There are other spreadsheets relating to other Windows versions available for download also.

It should be noted that is the Redmi Note 3 in that comparison not RN3 Pro - check the CPU, (MTK 6795 vs Qualcomm SnapDragon 650).

if I buy from geekbuying the International Version that is not ES (I assume Spain) stock, will I pay customs to have it shipped to UK?

Yes ... and if you wait long enough you'll probably have the pleasure of paying VAT on EU originating items.

Mine won't update definitions anymore automatically.  I have to download it and install the definitions.  Definitely annoying.

I created a scheduled task that updates them every hour, got tired of it telling me the definitions were out of date.

I'll export and attach later when I'm officially awake.

I guess this is the result of the Microsoft/Ubuntu partnership since Windows now has Bash available.
1221
That's because you installed the beta driver, the newer Install Manager for the Radeon Crimson software checks for updates but unfortunately it doesn't seem to take into account what graphics hardware you're running before it does.

I completely removed all AMD software and then reinstalled the latest applicable.

Edit: Had the wrong program referred.

BTW, one thing I also noticed with the Anniversary Update, Windows Defender would no longer do scans in the background, ie. you couldn't close the window as it would say it would cancel the scan ... there's a backward step.
1222
Well done Microsoft, second time in less than a week since I installed the Anniversary Update after 12 months of not a single occurance since installing Windows 10.

So, hope for the best, plan for the worst and all that - I've restored the system image I created before I let the Anniversary Update happen.

They can take their Anniversary Update and stick it in a dark place.  :)

Oddly enough, I had a look at the restored System Event Log, not a single Event 4101 to be seen.

And a FYI re. the times my computer sleeps, almost always less than one hour, (over meal times longer than 20 minutes).  System is shut down overnight unless there is a video encode happening.

I was wondering about the quotes :-[
Thanks skwire -- it opens perfectly in Libre Office

I was using Softmaker's Planmaker -- I will report it to them when I get a chance (I'm otherwise very happy with their office software)

Planmaker can also open them correctly, there's an option you can select when you import a CSV file to tell it to regard items with quotes around them as one cell.

I've done it importing Amazon reports where item descriptions often have a comma in them.

Currently on the tablet, I'll look it up in a few hours when I'm awake :)
1224
The C.H.I.P. also has provision for a LiPo cell to power it and doesn't require a separate dock, here's some power consumption figures.
1225
I updated my post but I can't seem to find the Power Dock in their store.

Still shows as available al-la-carte under the Omega2 Kickstarter campaign.  You can still order the Omega2 (Plus) + Dock via the campaign by the looks.
