Ah tomos your Irish, greetings :)

I'd be very wary of that article given the source.

Developer's Corner / Re: What non-programming tools do you use for programming?

Does a music player count ;) ?

Two very simple things I use is a window and a couch. Sometimes when you know what needs to be done, but not how to do you need to get away from the screen for a bit. I find either staring out a window, or lying down on my back with eyes closed is just what I need to clear my mind and get some proper thinking done.

C++ for me most definitely.

Minor quibble, probably shouldn't lump C and C++ together, from a practical point they have become very different languages.

I got INTP and given that it is the only result which mentions Mathematician as a recommended career (ignoring Math teacher from ISTJ which isn't quite the same thing) I would have to say that is an accurate result.

I remember a scene in a film, I'm convinced it was Chain of Command where a fancy UI used on one of the computers in the film was clearly just a word processor document with some large coloured text and the hero interacted with it by pressing 'page down' to move on to the next screen mock-up.

Some interesting points, I'm surprised though that they didn't mention using Tagged Message Delivery Agent which my mail provider supports and I find to be very useful.

Ok so I took the test again trying to be as honest as possible and this time scored 10

That surprised me as I suspected the first time I was picking answers that would steer me away from the higher end of the spectrum.

A question for any psychologists in the house- Regarding the two questions about playing pretend as a child, what age do you think they were referring to and does having enjoyed playing pretend push you in the direction of autism or away from it?

Excellent point Carol and that's why I suspect my real score would be higher. For most questions it was clear what direction the different answers would push you towards.

14. But I know myself I should be a bit higher, not too much so (I hope).

General Software Discussion / Re: What is the longest filename possible in Nero?
« Last post by Eóin on November 28, 2006, 03:41 PM »
Well that is a bit ambiguous.  Windows 1,2,3.1,95,98,ME,2K,XP,2003,Vista ?  FAT12,FAT16,FAT32,NTFS ?

Which one are you speaking of generically there?
 I'd better bite my tongue on that one.

Not sure exactly what versions of Windows suffer from it as I only have access to XP at the mo. If you dig around the PSDK headers you'll find a "#define MAX_PATH 260" crops up in a number of places and I'm sure that limitation extends back to previous windows incarnations, though this post on the subject caught my interest as it suggests the limit wasn't always enforced to the full.

As an experiment anyone can run a quick test. Create a folder in C: or wherever and create a folder of 64 chars in length. Inside that put another, inside that another and finally one more giving 4 nested folders. The last will get truncated to 50 chars. Then fire up notepad and try to save a file with a name 8 chars or more (excluding the added ".txt").

Windows itself has a max of just 260 characters :o

it might if it was a truly major new release that is first going public on jan 1; but if it's a "normal" update to a previously released program, it probably shouldn't count.

I tend to agree. I've had a second idea on the back burner. Might try and see if I can get that off the ground. Still nonetheless this challenge idea is a great one, congrats mouser  .

If you've any vested interests then you should disclose them openly. If you hide them and then are 'found out' you will lose any respect people may have had for you.

But 'morally right' may be a bit strong of a stance to take. Most people are biased in some way or another and it's difficult to always acknowledge that, hell some people may not even realise that they are biased to some extent.

Haven't played too many games myself recently, between college and programming I don't get too much time for gaming. Bought Battlefield 2142 which I really like and havn't even played it online yet. Trackmania 2 kept me occupied for a long while, mainly just the puzzle mode though.

Going back further then the stand out game would be Homeworld 2.

Reviving an old thread I know but this is interesting.

http://news.yahoo.co...m/space_shuttle_dc_1

[If] the launch is delayed for any reason beyond December 17 or 18, the flight likely would be postponed until next year, officials at the U.S. space agency said on Monday.

To build in added cushion, NASA may move up the take off to December 6.

"The shuttle computers were never envisioned to fly through a year-end changeover" space shuttle program manager Wayne Hale told a briefing. (my emphasis)
