Reminder of a few choice tech, headlines from 10 years ago?

I guess I could sort that out in the form of a "Tech News" style post?

Living Room / A warning to anybody who is looking to purchase a VPS.
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 09, 2014, 09:20 PM »
Tonight I stumbled upon FortaCloud.co (FortaTrust), a company seemingly offering very low cost VPS's, however...all was not as it seemed.

I decided to go ahead and pay the $0.91cent monthly fee (Not exactly gonna break the bank)...and I chose to do this via Paypal...so I can at least reverse it if things are not as they seem.

Once I had created my account and setup the server I wanted, I was told the server was online and ready to use...so off I went to Remote Desktop Connections so I could get things ready and working...and...NOTHING.  The server doesn't respond at all.

So...Things seemed a little funky with my setup, so I headed over to their support ticket section...only to find that they are charging £5 per resolution...so...I would have NO choice but to either just go away and not get anything for the money I paid (I know it is basically nothing, but I still feel scammed)...or I could give in and pay £5...well...

I decided to try head over to their Facebook page to see if I could see anybody saying the same thing, or see if I could get help from there...and to my absolute horror, I found the following:

Antwan Carr There is not even a free billing contact. Im asking my lawyer there has to be something wrong with this.
5 September at 02:40

Stephan Alex I would like to cancel my account however there is no link allowing this, and I don't believe that I should pay US$5 for a support ticket to do this.
5 September at 20:18

Onsel Isleam This website is a big SCAM !!! DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS WEBSITE
5 September at 23:01

Michael Nicholas Hi Mate, Just joined your cloud server website and the passwords do not work.
7 September at 09:21

Ham Zaa Dont buy anything from this website, its just yet another scam. you will regret after paying
7 September at 22:00

Virgil Brimley Oh my God, What a nightmare. 8-27-14 paid 394.41 for the X16a Server I got access for 5 days and now I get no response to tickets, calls, chat requests nothing. Oh, and to add insult to injury these folks are the same as SeverPronto I didn't get hit in the head for as much money but I did get hit none the less. If I had a forum to warn anyone else I would pay as much as they asked for non existent services to do so. This entity truly sucks the big one. Panama or busted!!!
8 September at 07:57

So...There is a little warning...I guess you can't FortaTrust them eh!

Oh...I have initialized a dispute and escalated the claim (Seeing as I am not willing to pay another £5 to contact the company in question to try and resolve it myself).

Living Room / TechRadar - Obsessed with technology, or just Apple?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 09, 2014, 07:34 PM »
As many of you may know, I keep my eye on Tech/Science news websites quite often, and I also notice subtle changes with a websites direction after visiting them enough times to be able to spot even the slightest change...

So...much to my horror, I have noticed how much TechRadar.com focus on Apple.  Seriously...Just go to their website and see for yourself...

Some stats below are true at the time of writing this:

News Image Scroller: Out of 6 news items, 4 are Apple.

Out of 36 news stories on their home page, 26 of them are about Apple.

On their "New Reviews" section, out of 5 new additions, 4 are Apple...

Now, I don't want to suggest they are in Apples pockets...but it is upsetting seeing them moving away from being a wide-ranging Tech News websites...one that has been on my bookmarks for a LONG time....to being so far inside Apple, they are chewing on the core.

Living Room / What type of development do you do?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 09, 2014, 06:53 PM »
Just very curious about what kind of developers we have here at DC.  Would be interesting to see!

30 days is pretty 'normal' for a DC thing though...I mean, some of the fundraisers last 30 days...so it should at least be a bit bigger and a bit longer IMHO
1210
  • People should be able to collect "CodyCoins" for doing certain things on the Forum during those days (just normal forum things like posting, creating a new topic, creating coding snacks etc) and they could be redeemable against either some cool DC stuff from Cafepress or wherever...or redeemable against free license keys for Software (If we can get some to  be given away like that during that time).
  • There MUST be a big cool fun countdown timer visible everywhere on the website.
  • If it can be arranged, there should be a give-away a day for the 100 days.

I was already using a webBrowser control and was looking into using the HTML Agility Pack I got off NuGet to do this, but it is seeming like a pain in the ass...Also..I suck BADLY with Regex lol

You need to decide on which control you will use. I'll use the stock control here.

Code: C# [Select]
  1. private void webBrowser1_DocumentCompleted(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e)
  2.         {
  3.             if (webBrowser1.DocumentText.Contains("No Messages Found")) {
  4.                 this.Text = "No Messsaged Found found";
  5.             }
  6.         }

That is all you need.

I couldn't actually get that to even DO anything lol (Although, it does compile...so might be something I did(n't) do.)

You can use a webbrowser control to fetch the page, then check its content with a regex.

Actually going to pull my hair out if I can't work this out lol

Trying to work out how the hell to check if a webpage contains a certain string of text, and if it does, then do something (I know how to get it to do something afterwards...just can't work out how to CHECK)

In non-code, this would be:

if webPage.ContainsString("No Messages Found") {  //Do Something } else { //Do Something Different }

Bit vague on this I know, I suck at explaining these things :(

Test Ebola treatments to be rushed to West Africa

In an extraordinary move, the World Health Organization plans to rush experimental Ebola vaccines and drugs to workers and patients in West Africa in the coming weeks and months. The move reflects a sense of urgency to get the epidemic there under control.

First on the agenda is immediate use of “convalescent serum,” an untested treatment that involves transfusion of blood from an Ebola survivor to a patient. Donors would first be tested for serious diseases such as HIV. Ebola survivors carry antibodies against the virus, but the value of a transfusion containing them is unknown.

Intel launches first 14-nanometre processor for thin fanless PCs

Intel has launched a generation of processors with the smallest transistors ever featured in a commercial product.

The Core M chip is the first in the family of Intel's next-generation Broadwell processors.

Intel had initially aimed to start delivering them to computer makers last year.

However, problems manufacturing the 14-nanometre transistors meant that the first chips were not sent until July.

The five most exciting computing launches from IFA 2014

Ticked off with the amount of attention smartwatches received during IFA 2014? Come in, step right this way and grab yourself a chair. You only had to cast an eye over the svelte and shiny Ultrabooks, monster desktop rigs and battery-sipping tablets emerging from West Berlin this week to see that computing was the real winner.
The category had a lot going for it this year, not least in the way of variety, with more form factors than you could shake a bendy stick at - from 2-in-1 convertibles to conservative classics, extendable hinges and dual-mode designs. Throw in Intel's latest Core M CPUs, high-end AMD graphics chips and affordable Windows 8.1 tablets into the mix, and you've still only scratched the surface.

Stolen celebrity images prompt policy change at 4Chan

The website where leaked celebrity nudes first surfaced has moved to comply with US laws on stolen content.

Many of the images were initially shared on the /b/ discussion board of 4Chan which has been notorious for ignoring copyright laws.

4Chan has now said it will enact a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) policy to let content owners get illegally shared material removed.

It will now remove content after it gets a "bona fide infringement" notice.

Nvidia sues Qualcomm and Samsung over graphics patents

Nvidia has launched legal action against Samsung and Qualcomm alleging both have made unauthorised use of its technology.

The complaint covers graphics processing technologies Nvidia says it owns via a wide patent portfolio.

The disputed technology is used in many Samsung devices, said Nvidia, which also wants gadgets using the technology to stop being sold.

Samsung said it would fight the legal claim. Qualcomm has yet to comment.

"They're using our technology for free in their devices today and they're shipping an enormous number of devices," said Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia chief executive, during a news conference.

Google to repay parents for 'unfair'' in-app purchases

Google is to pay at least $19m (£11.6m) to settle a formal complaint over unauthorised in-app purchases.

The complaint came from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) which said Google should do more to warn people about how much they were spending.

Most of the purchases were made by children keen to advance in popular smartphone games.

The settlement requires Google to tell all those who made in-app purchases about how to get a refund.

Chameleons and holograms: Dark energy hunt gets weird

Cosmologists have revealed intruiging new ways to probe the mystery of whether dark energy exists and how it might be accelerating the universe’s growth

A LIGHT in the darkness can come from unexpected places. Unusual experiments for probing dark energy seem set to revolutionise our understanding of this mysterious force.

In Chicago last week, the world's largest meeting of cosmologists debated two of the forces that could push the universe apart: inflation, the proposed period of exponential expansion that the universe went through immediately after the big bang; and dark energy, the present-day force thought to be responsible for pushing the cosmos outward at an ever increasing rate.

Meet Dreadnoughtus, the Mesozoic monster that patrolled Argentina 80 million years ago

Some species of dinosaur were astoundingly enormous compared to anything alive on land today, which becomes obvious the moment you stand in the shadow of their skeletons in a museum. This remains one reason why we remain fascinated with these long-extinct beasts.

The colossal size of the long-necked species like Brachiosaurus stretches the limits of our imaginations, and exhausts our vocabulary. And nothing quite gets the hyperbole flowing like the discovery of a gigantic new dinosaur.

So, meet Dreadnoughtus, the 65-ton, 26-metre long plant-eating behemoth from the latest Cretaceous – 84-66 million years ago – found in Argentina. It is named after the World War I British battleship Dreadnought.

Man Constructs 3D Printed Concrete Castle

Minnesotan contractor Andrey Rudenko is now the king of his castle; his 3D-printed concrete castle, that is. After completing a journey that took more than two years, Rudenko developed a customized 3D printer to extrude concrete and build a castle that he had designed himself. The entire structure is approximately 3 meters by 5 meters, which really makes it an amazing backyard fort rather than an actual livable structure.

Hi-tech cars are security risk, warn researchers

The most complicated computational device you own is probably not in your pocket, not mining bitcoins in the back room or nestled by the TV helping the kids "frag" their friends in eye-popping video game HD.

It might be sitting on your drive, in the garage or on the street.

The it, in this case, is your car.

Modern vehicles are very smart. They can recognise that they are crashing faster than you can and prepare for the impact before you have time to think: "This is going to hurt."

They know when it is raining, when you are straying from your lane or are in danger of hitting the wall when you park.

Post New Requests Here / Re: window region to full-screen mode
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 05, 2014, 12:28 PM »
The original request is really not a bad idea at all -- surely there are some existing magnify tools for visually imparied that do just this, right?  I mean we know there are zoom/magnify tools -- the post is just asking for one that will do a nice job of magnifying to a full screen.

I wasn't saying it wasn't a good idea in theory, just curious as to how badly pixelated a tiny emulator would get if you magnified it to say...1920x1080...Wouldn't the negative outweigh the benefits in those situations?

Saying that though...I CAN see some useful things this could be used for :)
