How about contacting some of the sites that are sympathetic to DC (like Ghacks?).  Could be they'd like to contribute/participate...

I missed this bit a moment ago.  I would like so second this idea!  :D

How about some cool features that DC could add/host:

I don't think it's appropriate to place any further impositions on DC (mouser) under the guise of a celebration, else we'll have to run fundraisers in January and February

I wasn't thinking about anything that would really cause mouser to be overwhelmed with work.  I was thinking something like an e-mail service which would be provided by another service provider and such...or things like third-party scripts (Although you do run the risk of it becoming abandonware, and also the risk of mouser modifying it so damn much it becomes impossible just to update it from source lol)

  • E-Mail Provider
  • Website Hosting
  • Socialization (So things like Facebook Login, Social Media Sharing etc...would get a huge boost in people coming in from those sources)
  • Document Hosting (I guess something like Google Docs)
  • A new Homepage (It hasn't been updated in forever)
  • A complete selection of EVERY piece of Software ever created on/for DonationCoder (A lot of stuff is probably lost on page 382749832 of Coding Snacks lol)

Reminder of a few choice tech, headlines from 10 years ago?

I guess I could sort that out in the form of a "Tech News" style post?

Living Room / A warning to anybody who is looking to purchase a VPS.
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 09, 2014, 09:20 PM »
Tonight I stumbled upon FortaCloud.co (FortaTrust), a company seemingly offering very low cost VPS's, however...all was not as it seemed.

I decided to go ahead and pay the $0.91cent monthly fee (Not exactly gonna break the bank)...and I chose to do this via Paypal...so I can at least reverse it if things are not as they seem.

Once I had created my account and setup the server I wanted, I was told the server was online and ready to use...so off I went to Remote Desktop Connections so I could get things ready and working...and...NOTHING.  The server doesn't respond at all.

So...Things seemed a little funky with my setup, so I headed over to their support ticket section...only to find that they are charging £5 per resolution...so...I would have NO choice but to either just go away and not get anything for the money I paid (I know it is basically nothing, but I still feel scammed)...or I could give in and pay £5...well...

I decided to try head over to their Facebook page to see if I could see anybody saying the same thing, or see if I could get help from there...and to my absolute horror, I found the following:

Antwan Carr There is not even a free billing contact. Im asking my lawyer there has to be something wrong with this.
5 September at 02:40

Stephan Alex I would like to cancel my account however there is no link allowing this, and I don't believe that I should pay US$5 for a support ticket to do this.

Onsel Isleam This website is a big SCAM !!! DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS WEBSITE
5 September at 23:01

Michael Nicholas Hi Mate, Just joined your cloud server website and the passwords do not work.
7 September at 09:21

Ham Zaa Dont buy anything from this website, its just yet another scam. you will regret after paying
7 September at 22:00

Virgil Brimley Oh my God, What a nightmare. 8-27-14 paid 394.41 for the X16a Server I got access for 5 days and now I get no response to tickets, calls, chat requests nothing. Oh, and to add insult to injury these folks are the same as SeverPronto I didn't get hit in the head for as much money but I did get hit none the less. If I had a forum to warn anyone else I would pay as much as they asked for non existent services to do so. This entity truly sucks the big one. Panama or busted!!!
8 September at 07:57

So...There is a little warning...I guess you can't FortaTrust them eh!

Oh...I have initialized a dispute and escalated the claim (Seeing as I am not willing to pay another £5 to contact the company in question to try and resolve it myself).

Living Room / TechRadar - Obsessed with technology, or just Apple?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 09, 2014, 07:34 PM »
As many of you may know, I keep my eye on Tech/Science news websites quite often, and I also notice subtle changes with a websites direction after visiting them enough times to be able to spot even the slightest change...

So...much to my horror, I have noticed how much TechRadar.com focus on Apple.  Seriously...Just go to their website and see for yourself...

Some stats below are true at the time of writing this:

News Image Scroller: Out of 6 news items, 4 are Apple.

Out of 36 news stories on their home page, 26 of them are about Apple.

On their "New Reviews" section, out of 5 new additions, 4 are Apple...

Now, I don't want to suggest they are in Apples pockets...but it is upsetting seeing them moving away from being a wide-ranging Tech News websites...one that has been on my bookmarks for a LONG time....to being so far inside Apple, they are chewing on the core.

Living Room / What type of development do you do?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 09, 2014, 06:53 PM »
Just very curious about what kind of developers we have here at DC.  Would be interesting to see!
1216
30 days is pretty 'normal' for a DC thing though...I mean, some of the fundraisers last 30 days...so it should at least be a bit bigger and a bit longer IMHO
1217
  • People should be able to collect "CodyCoins" for doing certain things on the Forum during those days (just normal forum things like posting, creating a new topic, creating coding snacks etc) and they could be redeemable against either some cool DC stuff from Cafepress or wherever...or redeemable against free license keys for Software (If we can get some to  be given away like that during that time).
  • There MUST be a big cool fun countdown timer visible everywhere on the website.
  • If it can be arranged, there should be a give-away a day for the 100 days.

I was already using a webBrowser control and was looking into using the HTML Agility Pack I got off NuGet to do this, but it is seeming like a pain in the ass...Also..I suck BADLY with Regex lol

You need to decide on which control you will use. I'll use the stock control here.

Code: C# [Select]
  1. private void webBrowser1_DocumentCompleted(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e)
  2.         {
  3.             if (webBrowser1.DocumentText.Contains("No Messages Found")) {
  4.                 this.Text = "No Messsaged Found found";
  5.             }
  6.         }

That is all you need.

I couldn't actually get that to even DO anything lol (Although, it does compile...so might be something I did(n't) do.)

Should I have hit a paywall for either of those links?  Because I get the full article regardless which I click.

You can use a webbrowser control to fetch the page, then check its content with a regex.

Actually going to pull my hair out if I can't work this out lol

Trying to work out how the hell to check if a webpage contains a certain string of text, and if it does, then do something (I know how to get it to do something afterwards...just can't work out how to CHECK)

In non-code, this would be:

if webPage.ContainsString("No Messages Found") {  //Do Something } else { //Do Something Different }

Bit vague on this I know, I suck at explaining these things :(
