Living Room / Re: What do you know about couchsurfing
« Last post by housetier on July 11, 2006, 03:13 PM »
hadez received an email regarding these questions; actually the sender referred to this very post. Now I know a little bit more about couchsurfing.com

What I don't know: why in the world did that person send an email to hadez and not to me?

I thought I had unhidden my email in my profile.

Here it is in mine ...

Hmm looking closely I see differences in the font, but that is not really broken. I chose "monospace", and that might very well look different on each PC.

Thanks Carol and Rover

Here is my site.

How does it look in your firefox? Please post a screenshot.

In mine it looks like this:

Am not so much interested in colors, as I am interested in positioning and line breaking. If it breaks in your preferred browser, post a screenshot as well, although I probably won't fix any issues. I am a FF fanboi!

Developer's Corner / Re: A good idea for web designers and site admins
« Last post by housetier on July 09, 2006, 08:03 PM »
I have done this myself too with my site. As some of you might remember I had it up first on http://housetier.kicks-ass.net/, but I also kept a separate installation with the same data at http://housetier.ath.cx/. That way I could play around with one site, without running the risk to loose any data. It was a little bit of trouble time-wise to keep the (valid) data in sync, but it also SAVED MY ASS when I moved it to the new location.

I will spare you the details. I vehemently support mouser's idea of keeping a (one-way) synchronized mirror site! Do take your time to set things up, and test that the synchronization works. Then test that the rollback works. If need be you can quickly switch from mirror site to life site, and quickly is good.

Living Room / What do you know about couchsurfing
« Last post by housetier on July 09, 2006, 07:53 PM »
The other day I read this newsticker message from heise.de(German) and thought that couch surfing might be a cool way to travel and find a cheap&nice place to stay.

After I read that the rescue mission was successful I signed up and filled out a great part of my profile. Now, these guys are still recovering so I didn't expect everything to work supersmoothly. But I cannot find a forum of any sort on their site, maybe I am just overlooking something, maybe they don't want a forum, maybe they'll add it later.

I tried to chat. But they use some bloody stupidnot-so-cool flash movie as chat application. Macromedia was kind enough to develop a flash plug-in for my fringe group browser on my fringe group operating system; this plug-in is not as good as the one for the windows platform: sometimes I cannot read text, sometimes I don't see anything at all, always it uses a lot of CPU time. So, I couldn't chat with the other users, and I sure do love chatting.

Now I am asking you: do you have experience with couch surfing, hosting; have you used their "service" or do you know of other, similar sites? Do you perhaps know some of the users/admins/founders; did you use the old system and could tell me if there was a forum? Do they have an irc server, or a channel on some existing network?

edit: misspelled word corrected (hat instead of chat)

Last night when I wanted to stumble some more before going to bed, I was sent to a SU page asking me questions. It looked like a survey thing and might have been there to improve SU. It also might have been there to find out more about me which then is shared with their affiliates... I haven't read SU's privacy policy and TOS yet, so I can't say.

Point is, that wasn't so much a stumble as it was some sort of nag-page. I shall observe, how frequently this happens.

Nice! A loooooong time ago I stumbled upon a Rubik's cube solver done in Lego! :o

Now LEGO is extra cool. I wish I could see that thing in motion.

I still have all my lego pieces. And I don't plan on giving them away, not even to my little brother. It's just to much fun to play with them and see what you can make of of today. My greatest achievement was an 8-cylinder 2-stroke 3-gear engine! Not very stable and it needed much improvement, but it worked. I can't prove this with photos though... :o

Refocussing the eyes is easy, I don't have any trouble with that, even went to an eye specialist who said my eyes were just fine (I have extremely good eyesight). But what the eye sees and what the brain makes of it are a different matter.

It has been suggested that my brain is not linked properly, synapse-wise. This made me very curious; I am always eager to learn about myself. But so far I have not been able to pay for a proper examination. Self-pity aside, I am determined to find out the cause.

And SU makes it so easy, so enticing to waste a few hours because everything is only one click away. So it does not take effort at all to see something new. Even if I used my bookmarks, I'd need more clicks!

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: Automatic Copy when highlighted
« Last post by housetier on July 08, 2006, 05:34 AM »
(I don't remember in which program I saw this function, but I think it might be useful universally.)

XChat for windows does this. It automatically copies every text you highlight into the clipboard. Inside of xchat you can then paste the content of the clipboard using the middle mouse button; outside of xchat you have to use ctrl+v.

Using highlight to copy and middle click to paste has been "in linux" (actually in X Windows) for longer than I use it. I find it extremely convenient, it doesn't interrupt the workflow.

Why am I mentioning this so late, after we are "DONE:"? Well, XChat is open source and one could easily take a look at source, not so easily find the code segment ealing with this and use/steal/copy/reproduce it...

Just my :two: for very late jumping into the discussion...

Living Room / faster than my brain
« Last post by housetier on July 07, 2006, 06:47 PM »
That guy is really fast!  :o

I have no brain for rubik's cubes. I just can't think around the edge so to say. Which is why I suck so bad at Tetris3D. Do you think it is related to my inability to see these "magic eye" 3D pictures?

My dad can see them instantly, I have never seen it.
1189
I have been asked on IRC if I liked this service, so I make it clear: Yes I like this service.
1190
Yes indeed I see it now.

Thanks jgpaiva and dB

I didn't know it was a special forum. I guess I didn't read mouser's post carefully enough.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Stumbleupon - better pass your time on the web
« Last post by housetier on July 07, 2006, 02:15 PM »
Where can I find it?

Here is the website of stumbleupon.

How does it look?

The guys from stumbleupon have created a bunch of screenshots, so I wouldn't have to make my own.

Screenshot - 12_26_2006 , 4_17_05 PM_thumb.png

Uhm, WHAT is it?

StumbleUpon helps you discover and share great websites. As you click  Stumble!, you'll get high-quality pages matched to your personal preferences. These pages have been explicitly recommended (rated I like it) by friends and other SU members with similar interests. Rating these sites shares them with your friends and peers – you will automatically 'stumble upon' each others favorites sites.

and what makes this better then any other service of this kind?

To be frank, I don't know of any service, but maybe these should be listed or even reviewed here as well. I can't say if it is better or worse.

Why do you bother us with this then?

It actually lets you stumble upon interesting websites! Yes, there have been a few that weren't interesting or great at all. This is expected, since a person's interests can vary by the minute, one shouldn't place to much value on accuracy.

I see stumbleupon as a great way to pass time. Just click the green/blue ball and see where it takes you. I don't see this a marketing tool like digg or so.

What makes you use it? What makes you recommend it?

It is easy to install, easy to use; it does not distract the user, and it stays out of the way.

* easy to install: the "sign up" button sends you a mozilla site or extensions. This makes installation easy, because https://addons.mozilla.org/ usually is allowed to install extensions; other sites would have to be allowed first. This makes installation both easy and quick. The installation of the extenstion automatically signs you up on the website, you do not need to fill out any extra forms.

* easy to use: one click to rate sites, one click to stumble upon the next site, one click to tag a site, on click to see what others had to say, one click... you get the picture. What I also like is the fact that it opens pages in a new tab when I click the buttons with the middle mouse button - just like I would click on links. You won't even have to learn to operate a new program!

* does not distract: stumbleupon does not popup anything, no bubbles, windows, messages; it does not blink nor flash, nor does it play any sounds. It does not annoy you when you don't need it. It is there when you need it, it stays away when your attention is on other things.

* stays out of the way: the extension had me when I say I could put it in the menu bar! That means, it doesn't even require an extra toolbar, sidebar or whatever-bar. It does not waste "real estate" which is important to me

Where's the hook?

If you are not careful, you might waste a lot of time stumbling about the web... :D

My Impression

To me this extension is useful (sort of guide through the web), it does look mature. I mean it works just like that, no need to fiddle with anything, no about:config-hacks; just: install - use. This appeals to the technical side of me ;) Hmmm how should I put it, it's solid.

I recommend you try it out, only if you have time to browse the web! If you don't have time to play, don't play.

So far I have used only the most basic functions, there are a few buttons I haven't clicked to see what they do.

Living Room / finally! - rubik's cube solver
« Last post by housetier on July 07, 2006, 08:36 AM »
I just stumbled upon this interesting website which features a robot that solves rubik's cubes - all by itself!

That website, however, has given in to the latest hype of presenting any moving pictures as flash film. Thanks to youtube we will soon have poor quality images with desynchronized sound tracks...

Anyway, it is a fascinating robot nonetheless :)

I haven't been to netscape.com in ages. I feel it's like an old club or shopping mall: once good, now dying. digg.com I visit rarely; somehow it just doesn't seem cool anymore (to me)...

I can't even bothered to check netscape.com right now! dc.com and my site are much more interesting and important to me

The fonts I use the most are Dejavu and Gentium. The server for the latter seems to be down atm. Both are free, both are truetype.

Dejavu is VERY SIMILAR to Bitstream Vera, on which it is based. It just has more uhm... symbols.

At the end the pilot says:

Living Room / it will happen in 2008
« Last post by housetier on July 04, 2006, 05:36 AM »
I think it will happen much much earlier. Next AOL Time Warner et al. will enter the "market". Things will detoriate quickly from then: all these sites will write about themselves to increase advertising revenues. Users will run away and find different means of finding "important stuff" (maybe by joining dc.com or sites such as craigslist, freebay or whatever).

I give this system of intransparent ratings two years. It has been hyped too much. Two years, because there are lot of internet users that haven't seen the hysteria behind this kind of sites.

We have to find a better way to promote things that are important to us; a reliable, untainted way. I do not know of a good way...
