Dirhael - would you be willing to post a screen shot of how bad FeedDemon looks with northmay.com blocked? I’m quite happy where I am but if, in future, I decide to update it would be nice to have some control over what the GUI looks like...

Looks like you've got the same issues that Scott was experiencing. Odd - I didn't experience any of them (Vista 64 bit). However, my use of the programme was always pretty simplistic - at no point in the past three years have I ever made use of hotkeys, minimizing apps to try, etc.

Using software to catalogue my collections means I can add a location code to find things quickly.
-Carol Haynes (March 24, 2009, 05:15 AM)

Now there's an idea I hadn't thought of, and a use for cataloguing software that hadn't occurred to me... Sadly, however, I'd have to change my habits to make this work for me - I tend to grab a book, get the information I need and then put it down. Weeks later I'll go into a cleaning frenzy and file a stack of books whereever there is space. Thus, cataloguing them and noting location would be futille for me as things stand  :o :-[

Cool - glad that Librarian Pro looks to be useful. I have a license for it so may try it again. As I mentioned earlier, I don't have much use for cataloguing my stuff. I like the cataloguing, but find that I don't make much use of the catalogue  ;D Not unlike WhereIsIt? - great bit of software but I barely used it when I had it installed, other than to keep it up to date (USB Thumbdrive contents). No doubt I'll reach a point where I need this functionality and rue the day I uninstalled the software (and stopped updating the catalogues), but such is life!

There's a cross-platform app out called... crap, I can't remember! Librarian Pro. There I did it, that might be worth a look.

If you have both a Mac and a Windows machine, this is a nice option as you pay for one license for both of them and you get 5 or so installations. It's also one application that accepts and categorizes everything (DVDs, CDs, Books, etc.). I gave it a whirl in the fall and liked it enough. However, I uninstalled it because I have lifetime licences for collectorz apps (mp3, Music, Books, and Photos) AND I find that the reality is that I don't use them much. Anyway, thought I'd throw it out there for consideration. I remember little about it - the version I tried wasn't nearly as flexible as the collectorz equivalents.

Heh, heh - nice, eh?! As far as I know, the major change is 64 bit compatibility, which is a big one for a lot of people. The other changes are minor (well, the core engine rewrite might be major, but I wouldn't know, not being a developer. I assume this affects the security of the application...):

March 22 2009
PS Tray Factory v3.0 released.
New in this version:
Implemented support of ALL Windows versions 32-bit and 64-bit (XP, Vista, Windows 7)
Core engine rewritten in more safe manner
The tray icon tips can be customized now
Reboot or logoff not required after setup anymore
PS Tray Factory tray icon can be shown in Tray Icons List now
Help system converted into Microsoft HTML Help (chm) format
and more...

Source: PS Tray Factory Homepage - under "Latest News". The only reason I knew that this had been released is that I set Check&Get to check the Latest News section years ago and finally got a hit this morning.

EDIT: corrected HTML

Yeah, but looks like it was made by Fisher-Pricew instead of Microsoft.  :D

 ;D Very true!

It's not so much better in Vista...

I like this quote from Alwin (to put it in context, he's responding to darksoul's argument that IMDB access should be restored to version 6). Very nice:

darksoul wrote:
what I'm trying to say is why don't they realize they'll make even more money by bringing back this one feature

No, "they" won't. I am 100% sure that sales will go DOWN as soon as we re-introduce the other sources.
So, we won't.

Sometimes less really IS more.

Why not just give it up? It's been over 3 months now.
We will NEVER EVER bring back the other sources. There's simple too many reasons why this single source setup is the way to go, now and for the future.

I don't get any of his arguments. But WTH do I know?

Windows XP (classic mode)?

Bingo!

But it could just as easily been mistaken for Win95's Wordpad:

(see attachment in previous post)

Well... yeah, but it was in classic mode, no?

To be honest, it's been so long since I had themes enabled on any XP box that I have no idea what Wordpad looks like "XP themed" - is it the same as in classic mode, or...?

As noted here and elsewhere, I no longer use PS TrayFactory (or any other tray icon management tool) because Vista's built-in capabilities work fine for me, but I thought I'd alert others to the fact that PS Tray Factory 3 has been officially released with support for 64 bit versions of Windows. I used a recent beta and it worked flawlessly.

Just thought I'd post to let everyone know that PS TrayFactory 3 has been released. I used one of the recent beta builds and it worked flawlessly. I'm running without it these days, though - see my comments above about Vista's "Hide Inactive Icons" feature. To summarize, it just works...

EDIT: PS obviously the point of this is that it now works well with 64 bit versions of Windows...

Ach! I'm a dunderhead...

FileLocator Pro 5 STILL has the Expression Wizard - you have  to select RegEx as an option and then click the Help button next to it to invoke the wizard:

PS one of the nice things about FileLocator Pro is that it comes in a 64 bit version

Ah... I was thinking of Advanced Find and Replace 4. However, the built-in Regular Expression Builder is not in the same league as the one that was included in FileLocator Pro 3 (and 4?), sadly.

And of course, it's not freeware, either!

Heh, heh - I already have a licence for RegExBuddy, I was just updating the thread WRT FileLocator Pro. Of course, other grep utilities also have something like the RegEx builder that used to be a feature of FL Pro... I just can't offhand think which ones do, and which ones do not. I'll have to load them and report back. Right, off to do that now. Back in a tick.

I suppose it’s time to revisit Opera and Chrome - haven’t used either in months.

Right, off to download now...

Off-topic: What is it that compels me to do this?! I’m happy enough with FF!

I forget where I read this, but Safari 3 was hacked within seconds at a recent security fair. The only browser left standing after a day was Chrome. Opera, IE, and Firefox didn’t last an hour, if memory serves...

FWIW, I’m on FF3. I like to live dangerously  ;D

Just to note - AFAICT, FileLocator Pro 5 no longer features the regex builder... just a more mundane reg ex tester. Off hand, I can’t remember if version 4 retained the builder or not. Pity.

Let's all try to remember not to be too personal in stating our opinions. I happen NOT to think RAM cleaning/optimizing/defragging applications have any real use today, but that is just my opinion. If cmpm uses such an applicaiton and is happy with the result, leave him (or her?!) be!

Looks good. I like the two line entry in the left hand paine and the bigger icons. The web browser panel on the right will be really useful, particularly if it is able to display information about changes in the update relative to the build that is currently installed (ie version  history)

getting a new key from this company everytime a major version is released is a pain if you are a lifetime user.

Roughly once a year, you have to request a key if you want to upgrade.  Not much of a big deal.

Zaine, why are you so excited about UEX if there are already a bunch of superior editors for Linux?

Yes - my experience with this is that it is a non-issue, as new versions come out every 14 months or so and the whole process is automated. Collectorz lifetime licenses, on the other hand, CAN be a bit of a PITA to update, but that's really because they haven't put in place a mechanism to automate the process - you have to write to support and wait for them to write back.

Note that EditPad Pro was available in a Linux version but that the developer abandoned it due to lack of interest. My suspicion is that this is a very competitive market with well-established players (both FOSS and shareware) and that mwb1100 is right - IDM must be after those Windows users migrating to Linux.
