Mouser started this thread right after a discussion about home made ice pops.

My daughter was in the mood for the taste of pumpkin pie, without having to actually cook anything. So she started with a can of Libby's Easy Pumpkin Pie Mix, that she bought on clearance at work:

30ozEasyPumpkinMix.jpg

This is the stuff that you'd normally add a can of sweetened condensed milk and a couple of eggs to it, to make pumpkin pie filling. It has all the spices in it already. She added the sweetened condensed milk, but left out the eggs, thinking it could be eaten as a "pumpkin pie pudding".

Except that it was really runny.  :(

When she offered me some, I suggested my share go into some ice pop molds:

ice pop molds.jpg

It was the best idea, ever! Now we can have that taste of pumpkin pie in the middle of summer, without heating up the house even more than it already is.

So, either do it the way we did, or make a batch of your favorite pumpkin pie filling, without the eggs, and freeze it in ice pop molds.

And those ice pop molds are a great investment. You can make pudding pops, fruit pops (with any mashed/pureed fruit), chocolate mousse pops, or anything else your imagination conjures up.

I like to use classic wooden sticks in mine, instead of the plastic sticks it came with. Once frozen, I pull the pops out, slide the lid off, wrap the pops in waxed paper before storing them back in the freezer. That way I can keep reusing the same small set of pop molds to keep making more ice pops, without waiting for people to eat the ones I have already made.

Tinman, I might have to try your recipe just out of curiousity about how the cookies will taste when made with sugar substitute.

I (and others) actually think this recipe taste better than the sugar made recipe's.  I love oatmeal cookies, but the regular sugar variety, no matter how made, have way too much sugar for us diabetics.  That's why I got to experimenting and created this sugar free recipe.  I have only shared this recipe with a few people, never thought I'd publish it anywhere.  Now the secret's out!   :o

I am going to have to make these for my diabetic hubby. But I may have to substitute whole wheat flour for the white stuff. (and no baking for me till the fall, so it may be a few months before I can try this out)

General Software Discussion / Re: License Key BS
« Last post by app103 on June 30, 2013, 12:03 AM »
Well, the way I see it, you have a few choices if you really like the software and want to continue using it.

1. Don't bother getting a license key and just put up with the nag messages. (it won't stop working just because you don't have a key)

2. Get a free 6 month license key by registering on the forum and then generating one (you are halfway there, since you have already signed up...now you just need to go get that key)

3. Make a donation to show the developer some appreciation for all the hard work he has put into that application. In other words, just like buying shareware, except you get to decide how much it will cost. The bonus is that the license won't ever expire and you can use it for ALL the software on the site that uses a key. It's a fantastic "buy one and get everything else free" deal, because you get to set the price of that one. Not too many software companies do incredible things like that!

4. Contact mouser privately, and tell him you are either too broke to donate or genuinely opposed to supporting the development of the software that you use, and he will likely just give you a permanent key.

Now what other software company offers you this many choices and is so willing to bend over backwards to make you happy?  :tellme:

Living Room / Re: How to choose email address without using your name?
« Last post by app103 on June 29, 2013, 11:38 PM »
My first email address followed the convention of initials+nickname. And since my boss chose it for me, she picked the nickname she loved calling me the most (especially when she had a problem, no clue what to do, and needed someone that could think creatively, fast, and stay within the budget)

alrknowitall

Of course you could use a descriptive word that gives some clue of what you do, like initials+occupation or a topic you are really into that looks good on a professional email. Something like ABC+Developer or DEF+Art, GHI+Finance, or in the case of my daughter who has the coolest initials for someone into photography, SLR+Photography. The added bonus is that many combos like this can also be suitable company names, if ever you decide to go that route in the future. (very similar to what rgdot suggested)

Yes, I do own this. I was going to take some photos of it in action by making some cookies, but then I got sidetracked by some work...and then the weather got hot & humid, so baking is out of the question.  :(

A country that would use nukes against an enemy is a country that will do anything to get their way, with no regard for the lives of innocent civilians. Does a small country with not much in the way of defense really want to find out what "anything" means?

That was a different time, with different stakes.  The geopolitical arena is much different now, and with the advent of the fact that the US is not the only nuclear power, there is definitely a different playing field.  And, nuclear weapons are really a weapon whose time has past as has been correctly stated.  The difference in conventional and non-conventional weapons is not as much as it was at the end of WW2.

So, you are saying that the US is not a big bully that will do anything to get its way?

I never said the US would consider using nuclear weapons today. And I never said that they wouldn't. And I am fully aware of the difference between the conventional and non-conventional weapons of today and those of the past. But look at more recent history to see what happens when the US doesn't like you, or you have something they (or their corporations) want. The US gets what it wants, by whatever means necessary, with little to no regard for civilian life. This was first demonstrated with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and in many other ways, since. Who really wants to set themselves up to be the next small country to get bullied by the US?

And yes, the US is still a bully. If they were not, this thread (and some others) would not exist.

Maybe, but I'll go and say it's not even the nukes anymore - those are so "old and busted" via mutual destruction.

More dangerous is the crispy new trend to through out the laws we have, invent new ones, and then break those* to get whatever the desired result is!

(Seen what Scalia's been up to on the Supes-Court lately!?)

A country that would use nukes against an enemy is a country that will do anything to get their way, with no regard for the lives of innocent civilians. Does a small country with not much in the way of defense really want to find out what "anything" means?

Sometimes you don't stand up to a large, strong bully. Sometimes the best course of action is to give them your lunch money or whatever else they ask for, especially when you don't have a bunch of strong friends around to back you up.

But my guess is so many of those countries are so poor that one good knock on the door will make them buckle over something like this!

Especially when that knock comes from the only country ever known to use nuclear weapons against an enemy.

Ok...it's 17:15 EDT on 25-Jun-2013.

Mssr. Putin has just confirmed Mr. Snowden is currently standing in the 'international area' in Moscow's airport.

The US is insisting Russia has the legal authority to expel him immediately, and is insisting they do so.

Tom Hanks lived in an airport for ages and he's done alright for himself.

...And I was trying so incredibly hard not to go there. :)

And that was based on the true story of an Iranian man that lived in the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, for 17 years.

Well, there is also my Lacuna Launcher, which can run a list of apps, and pause between items in the list. If you were to set it up to run the desired app, with the pause time between app launches to be how long you want the app open before being closed, then ran an app like Movie-ize as the next app to launch in the list, and set that to kill the previous app. It could serve the desired purpose. You'd have to create a separate Lacuna Launcher list for each app, though.

Satire, but it's spot on.  :D

U.S. Seemingly Unaware of Irony in Accusing Snowden of Spying

The United States government charged former intelligence analyst Edward Snowden with spying on Friday, apparently unaware that in doing so it had created a situation dripping with irony.

At a press conference to discuss the accusations, an N.S.A. spokesman surprised observers by announcing the spying charges against Mr. Snowden with a totally straight face.

“These charges send a clear message,” the spokesman said. “In the United States, you can’t spy on people.”

Seemingly not kidding, the spokesman went on to discuss another charge against Mr. Snowden—the theft of government documents: “The American people have the right to assume that their private documents will remain private and won’t be collected by someone in the government for his own purposes.”

“Only by bringing Mr. Snowden to justice can we safeguard the most precious of American rights: privacy,” added the spokesman, apparently serious.

Bernie Sanders has introduced the Restore Our Privacy Act:

Read the bill here (pdf): http://www.sanders.s...%20Privacy%20Act.pdf

And has a petition up on his site: http://www.sanders.s...7d-b03e-0c790a6b9aa6

The legislation filed late yesterday would put limits on records that may be searched. Authorities would be required to establish a reasonable suspicion, based on specific information, in order to secure court approval to monitor business records related to a specific terrorism suspect.

Sanders’ bill would put an end to open-ended court orders that have resulted in wholesale data mining by the NSA and FBI. Instead, the government would be required to provide reasonable suspicion to justify searches for each record or document that it wants to examine.

The measure would eliminate a presumption in current law that anyone “known to” a suspect is relevant to the investigation. It also would increase congressional oversight by requiring the attorney general to provide reports to all members of Congress, not only members of the judiciary and intelligence committees.

You should get yourself on every one of the following sites. The ones that allow you to give away mp3's, do so without you having to give up any of your rights to your music. All of them are either social networks, encourage sharing to social networks, or make it very easy for bloggers to share your music with their readers.

Inform me if you get on any of the sites in bold, and I'll help out as much as I can with spreading the word and getting people to listen, through various means. (G+, Facebook, Friendfeed, and my music blog, if it's an instrumental)

last.fm (you can give away mp3's here)
myspace.com
soundcloud.com (you can give away mp3's here)
reverbnation.com
bandcamp.com (you can give away mp3's here)

A new online radio site that encourages and rewards listeners for helping out indy artists by promoting them to their friends. You can get mailing list signups through this, too. Then you can offer your free mp3's to your mailing list subscribers.

earbits.com

Get on youtube, even if it is just with your music playing as background sound to a static image. Include a link to your site and offer for free mp3's with each video you post.

Sites that could be good or maybe to stay away from if you are opposed to CC licensing:

jamendo.com (they require CC licensing for you to upload your music)

Get in touch with these guys if any of your music falls into the Instrumental/Experimental/Post-Rock genres:

Lost Children

They go to the ends of the earth to promote and distribute their free CC licensed compilation albums and have a whole section for their releases on archive.org, and quite a following spread out all over the internet.

And if your stuff is post-rock, specifically, get in touch with the guy that runs the post-rock page on Facebook and see if he will share your stuff with his Facebook, Last.fm, twitter, youtube (and wherever else he is) subscribers.  (he hasn't posted very much music this month because he's been participating in the protests in Turkey, but he will be back to it, as soon as he can)

This was a surprise. Since it's kinda PC-techo, I wasn't sure whether this should be posted here or in the general software part of the forum, but I found it amusing and so I settled for here. Probably the same method could be used to uninstall Norton Antivirus too.

Jesus has been known to appear in some pretty unorthodox (religion joke!) places, like in the bark of a tree, a frying pan or delicious Cheeto, and even in a damn blessed grilled cheese sandwich. J-C has been spotted once again… in this dog’s B-U-T-T. Homeboy is wearing his signature robe and everything!

I think it's cute. How the heck do people find such parallels? (Or is it photoshopped?)

Remember, one of the fun things about Da InterWebz is that you get to tap a world's worth of rare talents. So some people have a talent for pattern recognition. So I certainly imagine someone saw that news photo and their brain peeled off the matching cartoon graphic.

It's related to the concept and talent for puns. I have a modest talent for those on "fast" days.

Or some time back when Louis Gray posted a photo of himself with his son, on Friendfeed, and his facial expression reminded me of Pee Wee Herman...so I posted it side by side.

So with this text based one you can point out what I am supposed to be seeing and then I can see it.

But for the normal ones, I have tried all the suggestions over the years that involved defocusing, looking at it cross-eyed, looking at it from certain angles, or from a certain distance, with my glasses off, etc. And even when you tell me what it is that I am supposed to be seeing, even when you take your finger and point it out to me, all I see is the noise.
