General Software Discussion / Re: backup strategy
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 27, 2015, 05:11 PM »
use a pen drive

I like very much pen drives to do backups, they have great advantages. However as far as I know they are not fully reliable. That's why I use two pen drives, different brand.

For q balance of speed and ruggedness for USB 3.0 I have come to rely on AData s102 series.  At newegg a 128GB can be had for less than $45 including shipping for those in the contiguous 48 states U S of A.

The first one I bought was a 32GB.  As I mentioned before I kept it in my pocket in harsh conditions(much of my body weight on it at times) and it is still working perfectly after more than 3 years.  Since then I purchased a 64GB and a 128GB of the same model.  I am waiting for one more price drop for the 256GB if that ever happens(right now $116 seems just a tad high.)

I use the 128GB for Macrium incremental backups.  It works wonderfully.

I'd think any good mp3 player has a "skip track" so don't bother "fast forwarding" the actual song, just skip.

you mean they will skip a song, if the whole mp3 file contains many songs, ie. a whole album?

Glad you mentioned this.  I can use it myself to slpit albums:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp3splt/

Supposedly it will auto fetch track times from the internet for splitting.

thanks!

as for the youtube-to-mp3 button, unfortunately it's not a single click operation! it opens a website and you need to go to that and download it manually!
as for the slimjet, it seems very promising, but could I disable the automatic merging of audio and video? I only need the audio! (or ideally only save the audio!)

You could collect the mp3s before the flight and listen to them during.  It seemed from your post the major concern was not having to listen to the whole track to get the track from the cache.  Also it was not obvious you were using a phone.  Guess my ESP is not up to par.  There must be a few dozen tube downloaders out there Maybe you could pass the time by trying them out?  :)

I spent the last long haul flight I took eating and freaking out the Canadian pig farmer in the next seat:
"Is that a FIRE INSIDE THE ENGINE???!!"  :o
"!!! ...I'm pretty sure that's just the wing light."

Is the pig farmer available for gigs?  That may be more memorable than classic rock.  :D

I find this works fairly well for Firefox.

https://addons.mozil...utube-to-mp3-button/

It puts a button under the current video.  Press the button to convert to mp3 and download.  Sometimes it will balk and make you paste the url in.  But most of the time it is as simple as it gets.

I download jazz so I am not sure if that matters.  The resulting mp3 files seem to all be 192 kbit.  If it sounds good in the video clip the mp3 sounds fine.

General Software Discussion / Why I am done chasing AV scanners
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 25, 2015, 07:08 AM »
OK.  I am done chasing AV scanners.  They can create new scanners and malware db way faster than I can try to divine what the problem may be in 54 downloads in 60 some odd scanners.

Here is an illustration of what can be flagged as malware.  This program has three executables.  The reason is AHK can do the job really easily(recursively copy files) but it cannot compile genuine console(command line) programs.  AutoIt3 can do such compiles.  So I created an AutoIt3 console program that determines if you are on an x86 or x64 PC and runs either a 32 bit or 64 bit version of the exe that will actually do the copying.  The slave program issues an exit code with the number of files copied.  The launcing program reports this on the command line.  Simple.  Here is the AutoIt3 source.

#NoTrayIcon
#Region ;**** Directives created by AutoIt3Wrapper_GUI ****
#AutoIt3Wrapper_UseUpx=n
#AutoIt3Wrapper_Change2CUI=y
#EndRegion ;**** Directives created by AutoIt3Wrapper_GUI ****
#include <WinAPI.au3>

$slavePath = ""

If @OSArch = "X86" Then
$slaveProg = "rcopy_slave.exe"
Else
$slaveProg = "rcopy_slave_x64.exe"
EndIf

$slavePath = _WinAPI_PathFindOnPath($slaveProg, @WorkingDir)
If @error Then
ConsoleWrite("Required program: " & $slaveProg & " not found!" & @CRLF)
ConsoleWrite("For best results put rcopy.exe and " & $slaveProg & " in a folder in your PATH." & @CRLF)
Exit
EndIf
$result = ShellExecuteWait($slavePath, $CmdLineRaw)
ConsoleWrite($result & " File(s) Copied")

If I check this with VirusTotal the MBAM there clears it.  But on my Laptop I run MBAM, update the db and scann a folder full of downloads.  It does not like rcopy.zip.  I split out the zip file and run MBAM on that folder.  It does not like rcopy.exe the source of which you see above.

I tested all 54 zips with MBAM yesterday and it liked them all then.  I did an md5 test on a folder of all 54 zip downloads from yesterday and a fresh download from today.  They have not been modified in the web site.  So all that has changed is which scanners like which files.

I am not doing this crap to give away software anymore.  It says use at your own risk. I think what I will do now is check the md5 of zips I have not changed.  If I find an issue I will deal with it. But AV scanners can scan in hell afaic.

Do good deed goes unpunished.  :)

Edit:  A bit of a rant.  But I feel better now.  :)

Developer's Corner / Re: Why Does Programming Suck?
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 24, 2015, 04:26 PM »
To me it's not the programming that sucks but the debugging.  Not necessarily stepping through code but just figuring out what is broken.  My brain feels like a sponge with the fluid violently squeezed out after an hour or so.  But it is tough to let go until you have an idea how to fix it.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 43.0.2 stable release
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 24, 2015, 07:22 AM »
43.0.2 has not yet been localized, so around "here", 43.0.1 is still the newest

From what I could see they only changed the signing certificate thing in the last 2 updates. I think it's a developer only concern for MS signing protocol or something.  I don't think there are even any bug fixes.  Probably why it is only a .0.x update.  Firefox is becoming chrome anyway.  It will be like Opera and Thunderbird for me.  Keep using the good old 12 versions for as long as possible for them and pre-44 for FF.  I don't have an ISP anymore so I don't use TB now.  But if I get an ISP I'll probably use TB 12.x.

I haven't been
 to a movie since 1997.

I'm BAD, right?

Last time I went to a cinema was Mission Impossible the first one.  My date wanted to see it so I allowed her to drag me along.  :)

Is it spanking free or free spankings?  Perhaps a bit off topic.  he he heh

An ode will then be required.

Anode to a Grecian erg?
Reminds me of the famous gymnast Cathode Rigby.  She was Cathy Rigby until she drank Gatorade with them electric lights.  Since them her poems have all been ionic pentameter.

you should be whipped, all of you. How dare you talk about this update without telling that 43.0.1 will disable any addon not signed! I want to whip certain people right now. Whip! whip! whip!

I mentioned it earlier.  Anything prior to 44 you can still set

The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi

In addition to the Beat Takeshi version, there is a whole series starring Shintaro Katsu

Beat Takeshi being a stand-up comic as well as actor and producer, the film is one long joke, with subplots.  ;)  If you haven't seen Hana-bi I recommend it.

Just thought some considering or using this utility may want to read my thread where I experiment with excluding large folders from the rollback.  Counterintuitively excluding folders invokes a lot of extra processing time, disk space and uninstall time.  See my thread on their forum.

"In charge" and "shock" ???  I have to cast my volt against that.  :)

Meh. To each their own. Some people get really amped up about it.

But we all know resistance is futile.  :)

But capacitance has potential!

I just hope the discussion doesn't get too polarized.  Mouser will ban us to the basement.

Two of the best things that ever happened to programming are code completion, and the nifty code context help that Microsoft abandoned after Visual Studio 2005. In VS2005 you could simply sit down knowing nearly nothing, start typing, and be productive with a little effort and no external resources needed.

I hate how VS finds all these references to stuff I am not working with.  Like I am doing C# so it gives me references to COBOL or Fortran or Java or some other stuff off topic.  I agree the old way was great for faking it.  Much more fun to stumble through than study in advance.

I am still trying to figure out why Pascal had nested procedure/function definitions.  It was pretty weird to define a function only visible inside the current function/procedure, that you are only going to call one time, in most cases, during the run of the outer procedure/function.  Some kind of Lambda expression would probably have made more sense.

Afa general craziness I am resisting interfacing to computers via speech.  Once they start talking back it is only a matter of time before they talk back with attitude.  Just like WTA/ATP tennis players I don't want to be seen arguing with a machine.  :)

I've seen this one before, it's a great explanation. But those three values are the easy ones - how do you fit in Henry, Farad, and so forth?

I would be reluctant to attempt an image for a Henry.  Likewise I doubt I could come up with one for a Farad in 24 hours.  But I do wonder if any non geeks give a flux.  :D

Note that the link in the previous post still produces a file for download.  If it will install and activate you would have to see for yourself.  I decided to get the update and let it convert to freeware.  I never use the oblique features anyway.  :)

does that qualify as four-four time then ?  :-\

I dunno'.  I can't read music.  I just sing in the shower or off key, whichever comes first.  :)
