  Apparently, somebody thinks I'm lying to the masses and has taken it upon himself to trash me because he didn't want others to believe a "lie".  I guess he's a self appointed sheriff of the board or something.  Anyhow.....

  Interesting stuff found on MS website;

"OEM licenses, including Windows preinstalled on a computer before purchase and Windows bought separately, are tied to the first computer they are installed on and can not be transferred to a different computer. To install Windows on a different computer you will need to buy another copy."

  But what about changing out motherboards with a different motherboard? ;

"The license that comes on or with the computer is almost always an OEM license, and such licenses are married to the computer onto which they are first installed and cannot be moved to any other computer.

In cases of preinstallations based on SLP technology where the Recovery CD is programmed to look for certain informaion in the motherboard BIOS, as long as the motherboard is sourced from the original manufacturer and is designated by such manufacturer as the correct replacement part for that model of laptop, the Recovery CDs are supposed to work and are expected to completely install the original OEM license onto the computer after such a motherboard replacement.

From an OEM licensing point of view, the processor chip itself can be upgraded without running afoul of the OEM license's restriction on movement, because Microsoft considers the motherboard to be the defining component rather than the processor.  Of course, a big upgrade in processor chip will necessitate a more capable motherboard so indirectly there are limits on how extensive of a processor upgrade can be without crossing the "new computer" line in the sand."

Don't speak too loudly about that, because your using an illegal copy of Windows.... Don't beleive me, just read the EULA with the CD or on MS's web site....  In fact, I'm kind of surprised that you were even able to register it with the MS website, which is automatic, unless you ran one of the various hacks to bypass Windows DRM.

Yeah, you just keep on believing that.  The only difference in licensing for the OEM is that MS don't support it, but it is still licensed to the motherboard...Unlike a lot of folks, I've read the terms of use.

Well lets see, if MS stops issuing security updates, then obviously XP won't stand a chance on the internet.  Therefore I'd have to disable the networking side of things to prevent someone from accessing XP over the internet...

Fallacious again.  Unless there is a severe vulnerability found (not outside of the realm of possibility) then this is FUD at its worst.  And even in most of those cases you have to (a) download something that contains the payload or (b) open yourself up to direct access to the internet.  A good firewall, turning of unused services, decent internet practices, and awareness of possible vulnerabilities protect you from most attacks.  This isn't to say that it might not come to the point where XP is unusable because of an extreme unpatched vulnerability.  But to say that lack of support makes it immediately dead in the water is FUD.

  Well if you want to surf around the internet with an unpatched system, then be my guest.  And how could that be "fallacious" when you yourself said that it could happen?  Hackers are constantly finding new ways into systems, and you don't have to download anything for that to happen either.  Ever heard of a "Driveby" or infected web pages?

  And why in the hell does it make a difference to you if I go to Linux?

Ummm... no?  I've used the same license of windows through several different computers, let alone just upgrading parts.

I may keep XP on my system with a dual boot, of course I'd have to disable the network side of it.

I don't get this statement.  MS discontinuing support just means that they won't support issues or deploy patches.  Unless there comes a very bad defect, I don't see why the network has anything to do with it?

It could also be beneficial to remove MemTurbo4 to see if the system is more stable without it. Software like this usually does a smoke and mirrors act, nothing useful.

There was another thread on this subject recently, with a better explanation, I'll try to find it. (edit: didn't find it, too many posts...)

  Well, that's the whole reason I installed MT4, to improve the OS's handling of RAM and cache.  MT4 does an excellent job of this, has worked for years without a problem whatsoever.  Just recently it started defaulting to 707 Mb, I think sometime after one of those MS updates.

well if your system needs 707MB to be efficient without failing then this can explain why you revert back to 707. You can try to uninstall and reinstall MemTurbo4 to see if this can solve the matter.

  Uh.... My system can run all the way down to 0 Mb free and still work just fine, and I've used this program for years with it set at 512 Mb....
  And.....As stated in my first post, not only did I remove it from my system, I also cleaned out the registry of any mention of MemTurbo....

Meanwhile on the whole touch fad, I'm toying with the idea of laying my touch computer down flat on its back on my desk (if that doesn't have any evil side effects! I dunno!) Because then maybe I wouldn't need a mouse - just "tap with fingers" to open folders, etc. Only problem is it would fight the keyboard for primacy horozontal space, but it is an interesting idea.

Only problem with laying your monitor in the horizontal position is with the cat walking on it and messing things up.

 I'm just getting fed up with MS BS, especially their DRM.  And when they have problems with their DRM (so far with every version), your stuck like Chuck.  I've had Winblows DRM kick in for no reason at all and had to get permission from MS for my computer to work again.  With Winblows, if you change out your hard drive, or more than 4 components (I think), you have to get permission from MS (re-registration).  And don't even think about replacing your motherboard with a different MB, because you'll completely lose your license and have to re-buy it.
  Sorry, but that's pretty sorry.  I'm also fed up with MS looking at my system every time I boot up to make sure that I'm legal.  No telling how much information is being sent back to MS.
  And then there's the problem of having to buy yet another computer that will support Win 8.  This computer cost around $4000 when it was bought new, not to mention all of the upgrades I've done since then.  It's still faster than a greased turd on a slippy slide, why have to buy another computer?
  I may keep XP on my system with a dual boot, of course I'd have to disable the network side of it.  With all the software I own I would hate to have to just give it all up.  Plus I'd miss DonationCoder....

  Got a mind twister that I'm working on and thought I'd post it here for any idea's.  I'm using XP SP3.
  I use a RAM and Cache optimizer called MemTurbo4.  For some reason, here lately it keeps resetting "Target Free RAM" to 707 Mb, when I had originally set it to 512 Mb.  On every boot it keeps going back to 707.  I uninstalled it, cleaned out my registry, then re-installed it, but it still keeps resetting to 707.  If I make changes, exit and restart it, it's back to 707 again.
  I went through the registry and every setting in there has 512, even when it's defaulted to 707.  I think it started doing this after the last MS update, which is pretty much normal, almost every update I have to go through the system and fix stuff like this.  Any idea's to why it keeps doing this?  I've used this program for years without a problem until recently.
  BTW, I went through the tech support for this software, which was bought out by another company, and they couldn't offer any help.  They didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground, but yet they still sell this program.  It is an awesome program, but I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND anyone buy MemTurbo4 just for this reason....No tech support

  Before you start re-installing Windows, first go into Device Manager and expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right mouse click on your sound card and select Uninstall.  If it tells you to reboot, go ahead.  When you boot up Windows will automatically detect and install your sound card, unless you have that function turned off under services.  If you don't have to reboot, XP will automatically detect your sound card and install the drivers, usually without any input from you.  If not, then reboot.  If it don't detect it after reboot, then open your control panel and click Add New Hardware and go from there.
  However, if XP don't detect the new hardware even after a reboot, or Add New Hardware don't produce any results, then obviously somethings probably wrong with your sound card.  Shut down your computer and remove the sound card.  Clean the contacts on the card with a pencil eraser, the red ones work best.  Re-insert the card and boot up.  If the system still don't detect it, then most likely your sound card is trashed.....

I have never heard of I-Inc but most of the online reviews I've seen are positive and, as mentioned by Innuendo, it has a 16:10 aspect ratio.

  I inherited my present computer from my dad when he passed away back in 03.  He had bought this top of the line puter about 6 months prior, a HP Pavilion 9880 with a 1.5 ghz Intel cpu.  Soon after I got it I proceeded to upgrading it. 
  First thing I did was to blow away Winblows ME and installed XP SP3, then I added another half gig of RAM.  Then I pulled out the 1.5 ghz cpu and installed a 2.8 ghz P4, replaced the CD to a DVD +-RW dual layer drive and a 52X CD RW, doubled the hard drive space, added an external 1 tb hard drive, replaced the graphics card with an nVidia 7600GS GPU with 512 mb on-board RAM, Audigy ZS surround sound card, bigger badder cooling fan + an extra cooling fan, bigger badder power supply and a host of other "little" things.  Needless to say, even today this computer is faster than greased snot. 
  I haven't been happy with Windows since they bombed us with Vista (even though ME was a tragedy), and now they're going to bomb us with Win 8 Metrocrap.  Either they'll get their stuff together or I'll install Linux and use this computer for another 10 years.     I just hate to have to abandon all of my Windows software, like ScreenShotCaptor.

  One of the most overlooked components on a computer system is the power unit.  Make sure you get one that has enough connections and wattage for what your putting into it, and a little more for future "enhancements/upgrades".  For the ultimate game machine with lot's of energy eating CPU's,GPU's, components, etc, the power unit needs to be around 500 watts.
  There is a help file on the net somewhere called "The Truth About Power Supplies" or something to that effect that will help guide you to finding the best PS for your computer specs, plus it tells you a secret or two about what specs to look for....

  I've never dealt with AMD graphics before, even though I am a AMD CPU fan (no not the fan that blows....).  lol  I've always used nVidia graphics, but it just depends on what time of year it is weather it's the top dog or not.  Last I read, nVidia just took the honors again, but that can change in a month or so.....

  This is not the first flying car, I've seen at least a couple others over the last 10 years.  I think they're saying this is the first "Mass produced" flying car perhaps?

  I think I'll just stick with aircraft.  I have a nice RAF 2000 2 seat gyrocopter right now.  Unfortunately I have to sell it because of medical reasons....

  Years ago I used to have a lot of problems with software being so loaded down with anti-piracy code that the program would either take forever to load or not load at all.  That's when I thanked the pirates out there for their hard work.  I was able to download "cracked" versions of the programs that would actually work and load in seconds compared to minutes.  And every program/game that I ever bought had that sealed EULA that tells you once you open the seal you can't return the program.  So I bought a game/program that don't work and my only recourse is what?  Can't return it....
  Same thing goes for CD's.  I can't remember how many CD's I've bought that wouldn't work because of the DRM.  Sony anyone?  What recourse to you have at that time?  Helllllooooo Pirates!  Thanks for being there when I needed you.....
  And then there's the games/programs you paid good money for that was just pure trash, not worth even $1.  I got so tired of getting crappy games that I finally learned to download the program/game from a pirate site first just to see if it was worth paying for.
  And I really hate buying a CD only to find that it only had one or two songs out of 14 that were worth listening to.  It got to the point that I would download the CD on a pirate site just to see if it was worth buying or not.  That was pretty much solved with being able to buy only the songs you like over the internet.

  They also released an Internet Explorer version.  I installed it last week but had to kill it because it also stopped Javascript buttons.  I couldn't reply or post anything on PCWorld.com forums, every time I clicked the reply button nothing happened.  Soon as I killed DNTP it started working again.

Bingo, I'm totally with you, and I feel very sorry for the poor saps that rolled over and gave it up.
BUT, call me a whatever you call those sorts of people, but a line MUST be drawn, or the tin-foil hat crowd is right, and this country is turning into a communist regime run by a trifecta of banks, big government, and multinational corporations and we are just little piggies that must be hiding something if we refuse to be probed.

Oh, wait... 

On second thought, screw those poor saps that caved, they deserve every bit of humiliation they're entitled to.
It's because of that attitude that our personal freedoms in this country and others are eroding faster than we can secure it.
Keep up the pretenses of a rotten economy, and people will be willing to part with every drop of integrity they once held so dear, in exchange for crumbs of safety and security.

Your using version 15.5!!!  I'm still on version 10.0 and it does everything I need it to do on my XP mochine (sic).  I also have 7Zip, probably an outdated version, but I only use it for a few compressions that Winzip don't handle....
