Backup Guide / Re: Well I'd like to have shared some ....
« Last post by nudone on April 11, 2010, 12:47 PM »
well, you've convinced me, george so i'm going to give OopsBackup a try this week. i've used geniesoft stuff for a while so i'm interested in using something that sounds better. thanks.

Living Room / Re: two-monitors ergonomics
« Last post by nudone on April 11, 2010, 12:40 PM »
last week i went to 3 monitors: 17" portrait, 24" and 17" landscape. as mouser says, main 24" is central but i am using both peripheral monitors just as much when doing "real" work like web design.

i expected problems but i assume it would be with eyestrain. so far, everything seems fine - maybe moving my eyes around more than looking at a single monitor actually helps them???

i have been attempting to take more breaks and get out my seat so maybe that is something you need to try - if possible. i've also been told that monitors should be at arms length - which mine aren't if i'm sitting upright - but i think it's worth investigating (or i will if find problems with this current screen layout).

i'd be interested to hear how you develop your setup as i can forsee problems ahead with long periods of use - i may have just not used things enough to notice yet.

(i must say i've also found the extra screen space very productive - it's definitely the way to go if you can justifiy it. i'm tempted to even go for a fourth monitor as i'm sure it would be very useful.)

it's too ridiculous to take seriously so i hope everyone in the country ignores it. rather like how everyone ignored the fact they shouldn't make video recordings of stuff aired on TV - we all knew that everyone with a vhs video recorder wasn't going to go to prison.

also, i hope someone with a bit of TV clout makes a documentary about how they sat outside a politician's (or Feargal Sharkey's) house and downloaded loads of "illegal" content via their hacked wi-fi signal. thereby making the house owner, i.e. the politician (or Mr. Sharkey) an internet "pirate" deserving nothing less than a holiday in prison.

(i'm sure there will be a plugin - if in the unlikely event there is not, you could go the DropBox/hardlink method.)

Honestly, if you plan on using Beyond Compare, you may as well just compare simple text file listings.  No messing around with zip files and their extracted contents.  You know?
true. i need to give things a try before asking for whimsical modifications of things like Zero Zipper. (i'm away from my main pc at the moment so can't try things until monday.) i wasn't thinking clearly about what i could do with BeyondCompare - with txt file comparisons.

Would this be better done with one of the utilities that make CRC or MD5 checksums?
that isn't really appropriate in my case. i'm looking for basic file name changes so i can just see which media files are on which computers (and which media files are missing from which computers).
1181
back again. just wanted to say that i think you've got an excellent list of progams on your Skwire Empire site; i'm going to give several a try later.

i found Zero Zipper of immediate interest. if that could be automated a little bit i'd find that more handy than the FileList method above. using the zero sized files contained in the zip(s), i could then do a comparison against the extracted contents using something like BeyondCompare, i.e. a zip made on one machine could be compared against a zip made on another machine - maybe i can do the same with the spreadsheets (never tried comparing such things).

thank you very much for the offer, skwire. i've found something that should do the job: FileList found here (bottom of page): http://www.jam-softw...freeware/index.shtml

i've had a quick test with it and it appears to work - i think that maybe i'll just have it output the list to a DropBox folder as then i don't require any extra utils.

i will, of course, take up your offer of an autohotkey script if this batch file util doesn't work as i hope it will.

(i will also have to play about with Blat as that still looks useful.)
1183
(i've got a sneaky feeling there must be a thread on the forum discussing this kind of thing already - but i can't find anything in the search.)

problem: i'm trying to keep track of a couple of computers (maybe more) that are miles apart. they have similar content on them - like video and music files but i quickly lose track of what is where; whether things are duplicated, deleted, unique, etc.

as they are media files i don't want to try and synchronise things using something like DropBox (video is way too big). so, i'd just like a list of the folder contents on each machine emailed to me in a quick and easy fashion...

e.g.
a util scans the folder each time the machine boots up and then creates a list in a txt file of the folder(s) contents. the list is then automatically emailed to me so i can check it against lists made from other machines using the same method.

or, the list is made and emailed whenever i run the util (so it doesn't have to do it each boot-up).

i'm sure there will be a util that does this - or maybe two that i can run together. maybe autohotkey is required but i'd like to know if there are any solutions currently available. or if there's a better way of what i'm trying to do - maybe DropBox can be used to save the lists in one place, therefore email is not required.

thanks.

Living Room / Re: First iPad Reviews Are In
« Last post by nudone on April 03, 2010, 09:14 AM »
i don't think we are going to see anything really great until we get the flexible colour screen - something like the courier but without the hinge breaking the viewing area into two sections. can't be that far off can it? that really would revolutionise portable devices.

as for the iPad, they are going to be truly rubbish compared with the clones that come out.

i'm a bit pushed for time at the moment, vegas so i can't double check what i'll post below. i'll try to do a more thorough list when i've time...

this one might have everything: http://www.tipandtri...ricks-complete-list/
more: http://www.mydigital...n-windows-7-taskbar/

there are more things stored in a folder i've got related to win7 which i'll have to go through later.

My biggest complaint recently is the dismal file transfer speeds. It takes forever to copy/move files from one place to another! It shouldn't take 2 minutes to copy 50MB!
that's got to be annoying. there's something weird going on with your machine - could it be related to the same problem vista had when it first came out? i never had the problem so i don't know what the solution was/is.

as for an "8" reqest: bring back the old xp taskbar (as an option) so i don't have to use several fixes and work arounds to get the same thing on "7". whoever designed the "7" taskbar obviously only runs a couple of programs at a time - or they just use their mac instead.

i like the pie graphic. not seen that before. it ought to be a t-shirt (with a bit of tidying up).

probably would also require going in "official announcements" too. (plus mouser being the author.)
1189
sorry to not add anything about power consumption, i'm just wondering if it's worth considering which machine you'd prefer to own if/after you become bored with your experiment. which is more useful to you in the long run - netbook or desktop pc.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Proto, another approach to file managing
« Last post by nudone on March 28, 2010, 03:21 PM »
hmm, sorry, i jumped the gun.

i've just had a quick play around with Proto and it isn't a replacement for "Everything". I assumed, whilst i was watching the videos, that Proto could identify every file on the system without having to go through specific paths - it can't (unless i'm mistaken).

so, i'll be sticking with a combination of "Everything" and "Farr" for my keyboard requirments. Proto looks like it still has some powerful features but without the ability to do what "Everything" does i'm not really interested in getting to know more about it.

maybe if you have no good reason to use the mouse then Proto would be a perfect file manager for you.

(it might be something i'll come back to and give another try - but i think if you use Farr, Everything and the cmd prompt you'll be able to move quicker around your system than what you can with Proto.)

i think this Proto needs some serious testing - looks like it could replace "Everything" for me as it looks similar to that util but on steroids.

or, at the very least, if you are a heavy keyboard user then this program looks really handy.

(i'm going to give it a test-ride from tomorrow.)

Maybe those of us in what's left of the Middle class should form a corporation so we could get better treatment in court and from the political class!

great idea, that's worthy of a sci-fi short story if nothing else.

this is that classic psychology experiment (can't remember the name) that's repeated quite regularly. i would expect that if the documentary is popular you'll see versions of it in your own coutries within the next 12 months.

the results will be as shocking as ever - humans just love following orders, even at the expense of harming someone else. nice.
1194
i came from ShellNetCity. they mentioned "super happy find and run robot" as FARR was back then. i had a quick chat with mouser and he seemed like a very cool bloke - i wanted to help out however i could after that - which eventually became cody.

:o i think i'm more impressed by the water version. limited, but it looks like a proper jetpack.

My intent would be to add it in as an option.

ah right, thanks.

after the collaboration, will there be two versions of BootSnooze available? just wondering how the password login version will be available.

Living Room / video: monkey on a goat on a rope. yes, insane.
« Last post by nudone on March 04, 2010, 06:06 AM »
not entirely good fun for the animals involved but it's still a crazy video clip. it's so bizarre it almost made me feel sick to watch - like watching the laws of physics fall apart or something.

(i suspect that the "wire" isn't quite what it seems - more like a few inches wide metal plate.)

looks like a simplified version of Everything, with it just having basic input for search terms.

Living Room / Re: People are really (really, really) stupid

Many people who otherwise seem quite intelligent do that very thing with computers. "Argh! I don't know where it is! I'm helpless to look for the answer myself! I'll ask someone who knows these things." Then they watch you look around and explore on their machine right in front of them and yet next time they need help they still don't think to look in the menu or whatever you did.

very, very true.
