Living Room / Re: What kind of tagging system would be appropriate for DC?

Codetrucker,
I'm not being snide when I suggest this. Have you thought about installing a kiddie filter to your browser? It sounds like an obvious solution to me. It won't just save you from DC's unpalatable posts but the rest of The Internets too! Sounds a lot simpler than trying to change the world around you.

Interesting... I thought wavs would zip up a lot better than that. rar demonstrates its superiority once again...

Tch tch, touchy touchy!  ;D

You said all the things discussed here are VERY different from what you discussed with mouser. I said he's mentioned tag clouds in his previous post so they're not that different coz we were discussing ideas about how posts should be tagged, which anyone with even an intermediate knowledge of programming would know is a prerequisite for tag clouds.

I don't presume to know what you've been discussing with mouser so I did qualify my statement by saying "unless he's substantially changed his stand". So yeah Ken, your statement was quite an exaggeration.

And yes, we will talk about it as much as we want. I generally assume that's the point of these forums.

I'll tell you something you don't seem to know, your ability to conceive of something is apparently unrelated to it happening.

Who said it would happen? Why would you assume that? It's just people discussing stuff, which is certainly more interesting/productive than getting into unnecessary flame wars.

Hmmm... I wonder how it would compare in size to a standard wav rip that's zipped or rar'd. Too lazy to see for myself. :)

Interestingly, all of the things I see being posted here as to what the tagging system is for and how it might work are VERY different than the individual discussions I have had with mouser about the topic.

Sounds a bit exaggerated, Ken. Mouser did show some interest in a tag system and he mentioned tag clouds, etc. I don't see how everything discussed here is so irrelevant unless he has substantially changed his stand.

As all of us seem to agree that in the end, we will defer to his judgement on the matter (for a variety of reasons), it might be informative to get some input from him on whether he is going to implement a tagging system, what it would be for, and how it would work.

He's already stated the general focus here. And though he hasn't exactly reached out for suggestions & will spearhead the issue I see no harm in bouncing a few ideas around. Sadly, the issue is being confused with the rather sensitive one of further censorship (which 99% of the respondents don't seem to give a fuck  about).

I've picked very few albums from my collection, the ones I couldn't bear to lose and ripped them to flac. The rest are supposed to be ripped later, yet another item on a very long "to-do" list...  :) I'm certainly not chucking them away.

Pick your best and rip them to flac, irrespective of whether you're going to rip them to mp3 or not coz flac is a lossless format.

We keep getting stuck on the NSFW thing.  :-\

Here's my last suggestion on that - after this I shall start considering NSFW a four letter word and try my best to refrain from discussing it.

The board already has an unwritten (now a lot of it written) code for handling that kind of stuff. And to be fair I have only seen one person have a problem with the content in general though there are a few threads that have raised more than one set of eyebrows. Maybe the "report to moderator" step though essential, is too drastic. A lot of people would consider it far easier to hit the back button than click on "Report to moderator" and do whatever comes next...whatever that is. What if we supplement this with a softer approach. People can just choose to flag a post as objectionable, completely anonymously. After x number of objectionable votes that post can be automatically contained within a spoiler tag with a button labeled NSFW, the admins may choose to receive an automatic alert after a certain number of votes.

Two thoughts regarding classification of posts based on subject:
1. We generally tend to have long threads but not THAT many new threads daily, I really don't expect subject-wise tagging to be a problem at all even if the original poster doesn't bother with tagging. There are too many older posts to tag but the useful ones still visited would eventually get tagged and show up.
2. Once we have a subject-wise tagging system in place methinks we should also be able to rate threads, that way if I'm looking up posts on any subject I know which threads are more likely to help.

The keyword for all the above is voluntary. It's quite obvious that most people are happy with the way things are and are wary of change. As far as I can tell none of the above would have any impact on somebody who can't be bothered about it.

Have you looked at the "tags" in  the screenshot I posted? People living in glasshouses and all that...

OMG brett, I actually started swatting away at your display pic with a piece of cloth and then when the "bug" didn't budge I really freaked out coz I thought it had somehow managed to get trapped behind the screen and I was like "please don't die there please don't die there please don't die there!!!!" lol! I'm keeping it - it's a super prank to play on someone! :D

The drop down list may be lacking since we're mainly dealing with classification of software.
How about an ajax-ish drop down/popup software classification tree, which can be navigable in its own little window - something like inserting those fancy smileys - u navigate the tree and click on the category/label that fits and it appears in an edit box for labels. Those of us familiar with categories need not navigate the tree and can enter them straight into the edit box, separated by comas & all that... standard stuff.

The mods will have to fix the categories/ tree structure but new ones are bound to creep in so there has to be a provision for that. Letting users create new labels at will is a recipe for disaster though.

I hate any site that broadcasts partial feeds. I still read Shellcity though, they make some unique finds.

relequestual, IMO your blog needs content much more than it does publicity. I like the look though, darker colors are way easier on the eyes with LCDs.

Hmm... just struck me while eyeing app's charts that the totals aren't included ... you could have a "total shown" depending on the cut off and a grand total.

I'd like to propose a "sarcasm" tag, that way I can be sure people got mine.  :P

Lashiec, there's no way to know for certain who's underage anyway (unless mouser starts demanding ID from all new members  ;D ) so nothing can be imposed on just a particular group of people even if one tried. I think we should start thinking on lines of categorizing DC's huge HUGE knowledgebase. I'm sure everyone's united in seeing that done well.

I realise there's more to the tag-project than just safeguarding sensitive eyeballs but how about linking the subject text color to certain tags - for example the NSFW threads could have a dark maroon subject line which would blend in with the black and yet be distinguishable. Maybe we could have visible tags (noise!) on by default but once one knows the color legend it could be switched off...
Please, not by default. People wanting the kool-aid can go drink it in their personal preferences section :)

Fine! I was just worried about some poor child strolling by innocently and clicking *God forbid* on an NSFW link.

I install all programs to physical drive 2. That way I have two drives (in most cases) chugging away when I load a program. I have an aversion for MS-given names. How many of us know exactly what progra~1 is, if you know what I mean? :)

My understanding is clearing the cache will only give the user a shot at re-downloading it. It won't prevent IE fudging up the first time.

Off the top of my head:
FTP hosting
Hosting at a site that uses Activex or whatever to let IE users resume broken downloads - the ones with the download progress showing right within the web page.
Creating a tiny stub file of your own, one that connects to your server and makes sure the whole stream goes through, yes they'll have to download the stub first... *sigh!*

1170
Check this out.
This guy's Apache log shows the full file going through, the fault lies completely with IE.

The consolation prize is that you can use these opportunities to move these people towards better browsers.

Just in case you haven't already, check out:
  • Clocktick (now discontinued IIRC) for the interface and
  • Alarm++ for the features.
Good luck merging functionality with simplicity, I've never found a tool that had the best of both.

Living Room / Re: What is appropriate content for DonationCoder?
« Last post by nosh on January 04, 2008, 07:23 AM »
Here's a con: Carol mentioned a "potentially offensive content" tag. I immediately went "wow! that's a great idea" but on second thought it would really suck for someone who's underage and not offended by some of the more risque stuff we see here to miss out on a complete thread coz somebody deemed it not fit for him/her. I know for a fact that nothing on this board would have offended me when I was 13. Come on people, DC is not exactly a sleazefest. If we could come to a solution that helps make DC a more comfortable place for codetrucker and others who are offended easier than some of us without eroding the experience for the vast majority of us, that'd of course be perfect.
If these tags are going to be restrictive in any way, shape or form and the forum experience is going to take a hit in any way I think we owe ourselves a proper vote at the very least to decide if anything should be done at all.

Don't mean to fuel the fire at all but just to clarify, when I earlier said the minority should learn to respect the majority, that came across as harsh, which it wasn't meant to be. I just wanted to imply the principle on which any democratic organization functions. I hope codetrucker hasn't taken my or any other poster's comments to heart, it's very obvious he's more passionate about this place than a lot of us and I certainly hope this discussion hasn't put him off in any way.

Something on the lines of Gmail's labels would be really cool!  :-*

Letting members create their own tags would be nice for a while but it could become counter-productive in the long run with weird labels, overlap, etc.

I think this has to be part of the larger solution of organizing the forum knowledgebase.

Codetrucker,
just to reiterate, I do appreciate people having different sensibilities but I honestly don't get how a grown man can be so sensitive. It's three days past the new year and here's what I've seen in the news:
A man being assaulted (and subsequently beaten to death)
A school kid who hung himself coz he wanted to "prove his teacher wrong"
Two women nearly raped in public coz they ventured to the wrong place at the wrong time

There's so much craziness going around and here you are, a grown man appealing for kindness coz somebody made a post linking to a porn site and getting deeply offended coz another guy misdirected you with a hyperlink! How does someone like you survive in the real world? DC is one of the cleanest places I know... I've seen more nastiness in this thread than I've seen on the entire board in the past few months. I think the message is loud and clear and the minority has to learn to respect the majority. You can put up a poll if you have any doubts about which is which but I suspect you already know the answer.

As for the term "moral policing", it's a bit of a catch phrase in the city where I live, the media uses it all the time with reference to a narrow-minded right-wing party, a bunch of ass-clowns who try and do innovative things to get some attention, like vandalize movie theatres if they're playing something that "offends their sentiments" & try and ban Valentine's Day coz it brings about "unhealthy feelings" (laugh it up!) among youngsters.

This is a terrifically good idea..  I've been wanting to beef up support for a tag-like system on DC and we could use the same system to allow posts to be tagged as NSFW and then let users opt out of seeing such posts.

This discussion may actually end up getting people posting more NSFW material... LMAO!
