General Software Discussion / Re: Vanilla: a nice, strange forum
« Last post by tinjaw on October 25, 2007, 11:22 AM »
This is the first I have heard of Vanilla, but that isn't going to stop me from critiquing it. ;)

First of all, Vanilla may have been around for a long time, I don't know, but even that doesn't mean it has been properly vetted. The community needs to put it through its paces.

There are many many forum applications already. What does Vanilla bring to the table that others haven't already? I can't tell from their home page, which, IMNSHO, means that even they don't know. Anybody with at least a minuscule amount of marketing knowhow knows that you need to tell visitors immediately what your differentiator is. They talk about being simple to use, but a) that is relative to each individual's technical savvy and b) not a big deal as even mom & pop hosting services now have push-button installs of forum software on demand.

They claim add-ins/plugins/mods are easy to do. Yeah, until you need to worry about deconflicting two different community-built ones. The first mod is always easy.

Vanilla may turn out to be wonderful. I don't know yet. And that is why you posted - looking for others that have used it and can comment on it. However, I just thought it would be a good time to point out some generic things that may be useful when looking at any software of this nature.

And one last comment. From their home page,
Vanilla is all about add-ons. We've spent many, many months developing a new system whereby developers can create add-ons for Vanilla that allow you to do just about anything with your forum. Want to turn your Vanilla into a bug tracking system? Want to tag discussions instead of categorizing them? Maybe you just want a fancy highlighting effect when new messages are posted. Your imagination is the limit.

Unless you are building a framework, anything that tries to be everything to everybody tends to not doing anything well.

Living Room / Re: Password Cracking Made Easy Thanks to the GPU

:(
Did you read the article? Sorry, but this leaves the impression, for those who will only see your comment and not read the article, that this is a bad thing. As the article points out, this is meaningless. This only allows hackers to crack very small and very simple passwords - ones like 'EatMeat' - your basic letter only 8 character passwords. If you do the math, they would need to make this whole thing work 1,000 faster just to make it crack a password in a human's lifetime. Any reasonable password cannot be cracked in any reasonable amount of time. And it is very easy just to change your password today and turn it into a passphrase, making it almost impossible within your lifetime, to be cracked. For example, change your password from 'jE84%kd^' to "*IfYouAren'tFiredWithEnthusiasm,$YouWillBeFiredWithEnthusiasm." This is a random quote I grabbed and salted it with a '*' and a '$'. This is, to all intents and purposes, uncrackable via brute force.

You can get the same functionality for much cheaper.

I don't use a seperate editor, but I do use a Firefox extension called BBCodeXtra. It is one of the many extensions I use.

there are right-click context menu tools for various uploader services.
if you use screenshot captor to capture images, you should be able to right click on any screenshot and upload from the thumbnail panel in screenshot captor.

I hadn't thought about that. So, match Screenshot Captor with RightLoad.

+1 for Jing. I have been using it lately and it is nice.

General Software Discussion / Looking for Freeware Screensaver with Space Theme
« Last post by tinjaw on October 22, 2007, 09:29 AM »
A colleague of mine is running a screensaver that she purchased. Another colleague of mine likes it and wonders of there is a freeware alternative that is just as good. I don't use screensavers, so I don't know what is out there. Does anybody have a link to some free space-themed screensavers?

thanx

But given that it creates copies at every save,

FYI: There is an option (look at the files properties in FileHamster) for TimeDelayBetweenRevisions. This will limit how often a file is saved if you save often and don't want saves from every minute. The description of the option is "Specifies an artificial time delay between revisions limiting the number of revisions that can occur during a specified time period."

I decided to take the time to learn SVN (well, I'm using TortoiseSVN on a local repository), and am quite happy.

Glad to hear that another person has joined the cult learned to use Subversion.

For us Yanks, that would be, "slysoft 20% discount on all products Expires Friday 11/05/2007".  ;)

As I suspected, no body was interested. I am going to throw away most of this and hand out the rest at work.

also, is it true that winrar will always handle better rar files, since its the company that owns rar?
The RAR compression algorithm is proprietary and not licensable. The RAR decompression libraries are available freely. So it depends on what you mean by "better"  ;)

Yes, nevf, very nice. I have sent you a few credits for this. Thanks.

I would really like to see somebody put together a LiveCD that you pop into all of your computers. When you boot them up they become one large cluster of CPU and memory and you run virtual machines on it. Take the volume group approach to disk space and just start stacking the disks end to end in a huge storage bin. Make it a virtual RAID5 with enough parity built in to that one or more disks could go bad and nothing but some performance would be lost.

Maybe have your "best" computer run on bare metal for gaming and act as the frontend for all of these virtual machines on the cluster.

Oh, and let's not forget you should be able to hook monitors up to all of them and be able to use it as one H U G E virtual desktop, X style, so you have apps from any of the virtual machines opening up windows on the common virtual desktop.

(Please excuse me while I go calm down, I got a bit excited thinking about such a thing being possible in the next few years.)  :-* :-* :-*

Yeah, I know what you mean Carol. I have VMware Workstation 4, but can't bring myself to spend the money for the latest version. I plan on just using the free server version and MS VPC 2007 until I run into some kind of hurdle, and then I'll decide if it is worth the money.

« Last post by tinjaw on October 21, 2007, 09:20 AM »
I had no idea the outlet store existed. Thanks for taking the time to write this up. I usually just build my own, because I enjoy it. (Kind of like some people always have a hobby tinkering with cars.) However, I know many people who would find this Dell option very appealing. I'm going to start recommending to people who ask me about getting a new rig.

Thanks Ralf, you just convinced me to try a product I had never heard of until this thread. You did a good writeup, and the personal testimony about X1 helped convince me. I'm going to download Archivarius and give it a try.

Question - if VMware Server and can create and run multiple VMS is free why does anyone now buy VMware Workstation.

Are there any advantages to the Workstation version?

The usual reasons. More better features. For example, large businesses will be using the higher-end server products from VMware, and the workstations will be integrated with the workstation version. Also support for Windows Vista, multiple monitor displays, support for USB 2.0, I think it works better with accelerated 3D, and a bunch more stuff.

I use VMware Server and, recently, MS VPC 2007. VMware Server is free, allows you to create VMs, and run multiple VMs at the same time.

Living Room / Re: Versioning of files

Simple - after you move the repository (which can either involve dump+load or moving the physical files), you simply update the DNS entry... if you hadn't done this, you'd need to change the repository URL for each of your projects.

OK, now I understand.

nosh: by Visual SVN, do you mean Ankh?

My assumption was that this is what nosh was talking about.
1174
I haven't used it daily, but I have used it very often. I haven't had any problems and I trust it on some of my most important projects.
1175
Is it possible to have this program create a revision only when I select a button (that would be visible in the alert upon ctrl+S)?

I don't know, Sri, but my guess is no because that would kind of go against the whole philosophy of the product, which is to version your saved files.

Could you provide an example of why you wouldn't want to keep a versioned instance of the file? I mean, if you were so clairvoyant as to know which particular versions of a file you would never need, no need to use a version control system because you are, well, clairvoyant. One of the major benefits of having versioned files is that you can go back to a version that you thought you would never need. Heck, don't forget that dodo happens.
