OK, I suppose it can go here :)

Surprise, surprise, guess who snagged Trolltech? HINT: It's not a company from Norway.

Crap! This movie was offered for free with a newspaper recently, and I passed the opportunity (or more appropriately, I forgot about it). And my friends told me it was such a helluva film.

Living Room / Re: Anyone Getting a Spamalanche Lately?

Well, I received a message from PayPal telling me to reactivate my account. I provided my details, including the password, and credit card information, and now everything works as before.

As always, the occasional spam message for Viagra and enlargements, but on the rest of my accounts, everything was clean, including Hotmail, which always gets something once in a while (all my fault, providing e-mail addresses in the wild :()

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone familiar with AnVir Security Suite?
« Last post by Lashiec on January 27, 2008, 02:08 PM »
Darn nosh, you beat me to it :)

I was googling a bit about it, and frankly, I don't know what to think. The site looks fishy, but then I'm Mr. Paranoid. No information on Castlecops or Wilders Security Forum about it, apart from entries about their executables (classified as safe) and HijackThis logs, SiteAdvisor flags the site as clean. They also did a really good SEO work, because Google is oozing with links to download their programs in every site you can think about (90% of them must be delivering malware, as always).

But it seems safe, for the little information I have found. It really bugs me, though, that there are tons of links leading to a download, but not a single snippet of information. Handle it with care.

Also, those Microsoft certifications, no information about the company, hmmm... AnVir Task Manager was featured in GAOTD, but that's like saying nothing.

Just came across this yesterday

By the way, that link to the variants is NSFW!

Yup, I should have checked all titles, since I know first hand of the relationship of Qix + "eye candy". Actually, there are more games of that type than normal ones like Qix, which is pretty normal, considering the game mechanics. It's not a bad thing really, Kaneko made quite some good games of that particular variant, and at least helped the genre to survive.

I wonder if some indie developer would be up to the task of resurrecting the genre for the new generation of gamers, much like Nervous Brickdown did with Breakout-like games recently. Hmmm, a Qix game in the DS...

General Software Discussion / Re: Don’t save in Office 2007's MS-OOXML format!
« Last post by Lashiec on January 27, 2008, 09:14 AM »
Hmmm, the first link is wrong, I don't think Bob Sutor writes in DC's forum yet :D

This warning comes a little too late, doesn't it? Judging from the recent economic results of Microsoft, one would say they're preaching in the desert. At least, there seems to be a ray of hope, and as a last resort, we can always rely on HTML and PDF.

For now, and after all the battles between the different formats and the proposers, we're still in the beginning, we didn't move, not even an inch. The situation is exactly the same as it were with old Microsoft binary formats, they work everywhere, but you get the best results with the app that works with them natively (note that even the same document in the same version of Microsoft Office looked different between computers).

ODF and OOXML have the same problem, they work everywhere, but the layout always bork somehow. Difference? OOXML is winning by a long shot, not only because Office 2007 has a larger installed base (no discussion there, it's a better app), but also because at least Microsoft provides viewers for their formats, while Sun... provides nothing! (OK, you can use Universal Viewer with a plugin as a viewer, but it's not nearly the same). One would expect enterprises to install plugins for ODF in Office, but what about individual users? How many are aware that even ODF exists? This battle is exactly as the one in HD formats: lots of money burned, lots of discussion, but nobody is paying attention.

Call me when it's over, for now I'll use the only real interoperable format: PDF. After all, even HTML breaks depending of the browser, and that's a defined standard...

I'm speechless :-*

Could it be one of these?

Careful when checking up SeXoniX, that game features mature themes.
1161
Cool, thanks! I'm checking his other themes right now, some interesting options in there.
1162
The most important thing about this new development is that I need mitzevo to tell me the name of the visual style he is using in that screenshot, since it looks cool, and that would prove useful in the long term for a great number of people.

[Adolescent humour]

I was expecting that! Look, how to make an appropriate comparison (I suppose Python is better than Delphi):

Spoiler
Having to decide between Python and Delphi is like refusing an invitation from Scarlett Johansson: You'll end up in her twin brother bed.

See? Now it's much clear. I hope tranglos does not go mad

While we wait for the reinforcements, take a peek at nontroppo's wiki, particularly the customization section, to find quite some information about extending Opera. I think there should be another resource out there, he does not even list OSpell!

I use OSpell, for checking my spelling everywhere, and Flashblock, for blocking pesky flash, and be able to navigate the web without some annoying flash ad disrupting my music. Also, it has the benefit of letting me control which YouTube video should start downloading first, when I have a pile of them opened ;D

Developer's Corner / Re: Microsoft providing .NET Framework source code!
« Last post by Lashiec on January 26, 2008, 11:49 AM »
Bump ;D

Microsoft finally released the source code for .NET as promised. Nothing new, so why are you resurrecting a 3-months old topic? Because they introduced a change in the license that affects the Mono Framework. Quotable quote:

The .NET Framework source is being released under a read-only reference license. When we announced that we were releasing the source back in October, some people had concerns about the potential impact of their viewing the source. To help clarify and address these concerns, we made a small change to the license to specifically call out that the license does not apply to users developing software for a non-Windows platform that has “the same or substantially the same features or functionality” as the .NET Framework. If the software you are developing is for Windows platforms, you can look at the code, even if that software has "the same or substantially the same features or functionality" as the .NET Framework.

I wonder if this means that the guys working at Novell in Mono can actually use the source code as a reference for improving Mono. Hmmm, the blog entry is now 10 days old, but Miguel de Icaza didn't comment anything in his weblog.

EDIT: OK, on second reading, the quote appears to me to specify the contrary to what I thought at first. DO NOT look at the code if you're developing something outside Windows. And it actually makes sense ;D

I discovered some interesting sites, and met some old friends. I highly recommend OverClocked ReMix, for featuring music remixes of insane quality, and Insert Credit, for being such a great source of information for hardcore gamers.

So that means we should avoid both languages?

I'll call my representatives at Microsoft, then :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by Lashiec on January 25, 2008, 01:40 PM »
Yes, some kind of malware can do that. Recently, they discovered a specimen that can break out of a sandboxed environment like VMware and cause havoc in the host machine. If only I could remember where I read about it...
1171
Yes, I think Microsoft is showing up with this move that their engineers are very lazy, expecting web developers to specify what IE must do when confronted with their page. This could be OK if IE was the only browser around, but this is not the case.

Besides, I find ironic that after the web started to move towards standard compliant websites, and IE stayed behind, thus forcing web developers to code workarounds for IE (and hurting other browsers in the process) or even dumbing down their sites with quite simplified layouts, now Microsoft expect them to do the same, but for compliance! It's ridiculous, there's a single standard, but Microsoft wants people to follow their tune, while other browsers had been implementing workarounds for IE (the defacto HTML standard) shortcomings during years.

I hope that after all the backslash, Microsoft sees this is not the right path, and either does the same as the competing browsers, or calls all the companies involved in the W3C to come up with a sensible solution.

Something that worries me is that, if they decide to continue this nonsense, and even if most web developers ignore them, they'll try to impose this "solution" by force, like making the future versions of Expression Web write this metatag by default to HTML files.
1172
Well, everything is explained there. As you can add custom apps to the list of those ones that can be used Launchy, you can define a list of extensions usually associated with downloads, and use as the app the one linked there. So, when you encounter a file you want to download, you select Get File Size in the Launchy entry integrated in the context menu in Firefox, and theoretically the program will give you the details on the download and allow you to get the file from the program. In theory :)

We've had references to several app's, some of which are quite old (and/or no longer available??) and which the users seem quite happy with, and some of which are 'new' and which people aren't happy with.

Yes, for example Gothi[c] told me a while ago in DC's IRC channel that he uses Sygate to firewall one of his computers. Being a server administrator, I guess his opinion is one not to be taken lightly.

nice piece by Lashiec, BTW

Thanks! It's something it has been roaming my head for quite some months, and I finally decided to wrote about it. I would probably end up installing a firewall anyway, despite what I said there, but I don't have a router, so it's impossible for mean to have a fine-grained control over the applications accessing the Internet. Now, the riddle is to find something that works like a firewall, and nothing more, since the antispyware is caring about the system internals protection. And finding time to test them all :)

BTW, something I remembered about outbound protection is that, even if f0dder point about that such ability is useless once your computer has been compromised is a good one, is that thanks to it, you can prevent the malware from sending sensitive information to its creator. That is, if you caught malware that spies on you. Then again, something should be done to prevent the software from entering in your computer, and the firewall is not the candidate for doing that. It's either you or monitoring software.

That addon wasn't accepted  >:(. I listed a half dozen reasons. Find me a better one!! Quick!! :P

Did ya try the other solution I proposed in that thread? (Tip to find it: Ignore the rant ;D)

Examples: PGP, copy-paste full clipboard (with formatting: right now it forces plain text!), select text with keyboard, etc.

Ah, yes, that's something I really want, though I understand it may conflict with spacial navigation in some ways. More support for tagging (like housetier, I use the same system) would be welcome, there are only so many folders you can create and navigate in a bookmark system, and I think the two systems can be implemented with ease and no conflicts between them.
