I'm locking this thread.

If this game is given away on Steam again in the future, please post about it in the Latest Steam Giveaway thread.

According to this thread, Starpoint Gemini 2 is free on Steam if you claim it soon. I already have it from a previous giveaway and it isn't showing as free for me, so I'm not sure if the giveaway already ended. But it may be worth looking into to claim if you are interested.

But I still do use Gmail. What have you found to be a satisfactory alternative?

I've been using ProtonMail.

It's not quite as smooth of an experience as Gmail, but it works for my needs. And I still haven't migrated my Google Contacts over to ProtonMail, so I'm not sure how I feel about ProtonMail's Contacts feature(s). But I like how ProtonMail automatically handles end-to-end encryption to/from other known services that support encrypted email. And for services that don't normally support encryption by default, you can import a person's public key or just password protect the email to ensure snooping eyes or services can't see it without the key/password.

Microsoft patches another zero-day flaw

It only affects Internet Explorer 11. Which, of course, is still inexplicably included with all modern-ish versions of Windows. But even so. Don't use IE and it shouldn't be a problem.

I only see 5 games on GOG Connect right now. I'm not sure if they're all different from the 7 earlier ones, or if just two of the previous ones dropped away. But it may be worth checking again.

General Software Discussion / Microsoft installs Photos Add-on (DLC) automatically
« Last post by Deozaan on December 19, 2018, 12:30 PM »
I came to my PC today to find a message in the notification area telling me that a Photos Add-on had been installed. I clicked it to see what it was all about and it opened the Microsoft Store to the product page.

Photos Add-on is essentially free DLC for the Photos app. While my first impression of the software leaves me questioning its usefulness (it created a bunch of albums for me, but only from photos taken around 5 years ago), this post isn't really about the software itself. This is about the disturbing fact that Microsoft thinks it can (and should) install software on my PC without even asking me first. In my mind, this is different from bundling software with the OS installer, or even OS updates. While that is annoying, it could be said that the bundled software is part of the "feature improvements" the update brings.

But this was not an OS update. It was not even a Photos app update. It is just an out-of-the-blue download-and-install on a random day for no reason other than just because Microsoft decided they wanted me to have it.

It's disturbing and makes me feel violated in some sense. Like I had a home-invasion from someone who saw through my windows that I eat bread and thought I'd really enjoy a certain flavor of jam to go with my bread.

EDIT: Looks like it's essentially a demo. It's a limited, non-fully-featured version of the game.  :(

I believe its just the 'battle royale' component...

Yes, but it seems even that is limited (emphasis added below):

The [complete edition] includes extra game modes, cosmetics, online co-op, and a full singleplayer campaign

So from the sounds of it, you can play online free-for-all PVP but you can't play online with any friends/team-mates. :(

I was a big advocate for Google products and services for many years among my peers and acquaintances. Over the past several years I've become increasingly uneasy about them and their practices, and in the past two years or so have been slowly migrating myself away from them and their services.

I no longer use Google (the search engine). I no longer use Chrome as my browser. I use Hangouts only insofar as it is required for Google Voice. I've pretty much entirely moved away from Gmail. I haven't exactly migrated away from Google Docs/Drive, but there are a lot of instances where I will just create a local (or cloud synced) Libre Office document instead. And I'm eagerly awaiting a viable YouTube contender to surface.

I don't think I'll be sad one bit if in 5 years or so I think of Google like I now think of MySpace, LiveJournal, or Yahoo!

Living Room / 3D Printed Heads Successfully Get Through Facial Recognition Locks
« Last post by Deozaan on December 16, 2018, 09:44 PM »
One more piece of evidence to back up the axiom that security and convenience are often mutually exclusive.

It seems "hackers" and law enforcement have a new tool in their toolbelt for getting into people's phones: a 3D printed head/face can unlock some devices.

Forbes reporter Thomas Brewster commissioned a 3D printed model of his own head to test the face unlocking systems on a range of phones — four Android models and an iPhone X.

Bad news if you’re an Android user: only the iPhone X defended against the attack.

But, at least in the case of law enforcement, it's more likely they would just compel you to press your finger or show your face to your device to unlock it, rather than make a 3D print of your head.

Even still, the fact that a 3D print can bypass security measures reveals a fundamental risk:

“A situation where you couldn’t get the actual person but could use a 3D print model may exist,” he said. “I think the big threat is that a system where anyone — cops or criminals — can get into your phone by holding your face up to it is a system with serious security limits.”

...

Those cheering on the “death of the password” might want to think again. They’re still the only thing that’s keeping your data safe from the law.

I've downloaded it a few times but never really delved into it.

FYI it's also available on Steam if you would like the conveniences that come with Steam (auto updates, etc.).

Microsoft finally decided to grace my PC with their October update.

I'm currently running 1809 OS Build 17763.168. Updating worked without issue, and everything seems to be running fine for me.

I don't think this is related to the 1809 update, but I suffered a BSOD yesterday and afterwards my computer would not boot and all my attempts to "repair" the issue would not resolve it. So I made a backup of the important files, wiped my OS drive and reinstalled Windows 10 from the only installation media I had.

Which means I'm back on 1803 (build 17134.471) until Windows update decides to send 1809 my way once again.

I, too, found GIMP to be far too complex for my needs. I usually go with Paint.NET (which is free!) for very simple edits (crops, resizing). But I've never done "more advanced" edits like face swap, background/object removal. You might need a more advanced photo editor for that.

Have you looked at Affinity Photo?

Seems like it can do a lot of the fancy stuff and is only $50. And I think they usually have a sale around Christmas or the New Year where you can get it for about $35.

Living Room / Re: Google finds Vulnerability in G+ API. Sunsets G+ in response.
« Last post by Deozaan on December 10, 2018, 08:17 PM »
A new Google+ security flaw was found, so Google is advancing the shutdown date from August 2019 to April 2019.

Google is shutting down its beleaguered social network sooner than expected in the wake of a new security issue that affected 52.5 million users.

Google Plus received its initial kiss of death in early October, when the company revealed that a security bug had exposed the account information of 500,000 users, including their names, email addresses and occupations. At the time, Google planned to shut down the social network by August 2019.

But in a blog post Monday Google wrote that it discovered a second bug that allowed the profile information of 52.5 million users to be viewable by developers, even if it was set to private, using one of Google’s application programming interfaces, or APIs, for six days in November. Once again, the available data included information like users’ names, email addresses, occupations and ages.

I managed to get the October Update this morning and I seem to be the only one here who got it without serious incident. Anyone else?

1809 still hasn't been pushed to me yet. I'm running 1803 and just checked for updates and it says there's nothing for me.

The only work-around that I have now is to PM it to myself.  The PMs use the same format, so it can work.  You just can't edit.

You also can't attach files. :o
