Skrommel's Software / Re: Desklock running on Windows 10
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 04, 2016, 07:17 AM »
I'll give your suggestion a try. As for my laptop going into sleep mode I have shut it down completely. The little icon, after downloading, shows up in the system tray not on the desktop. However, there is what looks like an icon for
Desklock on my desktop, but all it contains are settings I think Desklock uses; not really sure about this though. Also I not really sure who wrote this software.

It seems to be a Skrommel utility.  He has not been frequenting this forum for some time.  But his utilities do have source code.  So it is conceivable that you may be able to ask someone on https://autohotkey.com/boards/index.php to help you alter the script or figure out why there is an issue with Windows 10.  That forum is for the Autohotkey programming language Desklock is written in.

I mention sleep because many Laptops, including mine, are set by default to use "fast booting" meaning it only sleeps on shutdown.  But when it does restart it does an actual shutdown during the reboot cycle so that Windows Updates and software installers will work properly.  Of course you may have overridden the settings to do an actual shutdown.

It sounds like you are saving it to the desktop.  I haven't tried it but it claims not to need to be installed.  Try just putting the exe in an empty folder in your account and making a shortcut for the desktop.  Then running it.  Also your Laptop may only be sleeping instead of shutting down.  After making the shortcut on the desktop and trying running it, if everything seems OK restart your system to make sure everything is saved to disk.  See if the new shortcut is still on the desktop when it comes up from the restart.

If you're not in a hurry and can get it delivered somewhere, various Chinese shopping sites have them for US$8-15.

Thanks for the tip.

And as long as the tuner uses a standard BDA driver you can probably use whatever software you like to view the signal.

Of course, North America uses the ATSC standard but the requirements shouldn't be that much different.

Just to run this by you.  Does this gizmo fit the bill do you think?

Edit:  I am a bit paranoid as it mentions PAL but not ATSC.

I've used USB DVB-T devices for more than 6 years without any problem on desktops, laptops, and even my old netbook.  If your laptop specs aren't up to it then you might be stuck being only able to watch SD without stutter but I don't think you'll have that problem MilesAhead.

Thanks.  It sounds like I am on the right path.  At least for NFL football next year.  It is frustrating when the game is available on any TV set but I would have to stand in the mall and watch without sound, or pump money into a sports bar.  I don't drink alcohol and after a couple of Pellegrinos I feel bloated.  :)

Watching a few highlights on the Tube sucks.  :)

Are you really looking for HD? Not sure if that is even available through an antenna-signal, I'd expect SD quality only
AFAIK you can watch TV on the laptop screen, though, what else would be the point of a usb-receiver?

I get you.  SD digital would likely not be that bad on the eyes.  There was a stick that had connections for a DVD player.  The descriptions are pretty short and with no customer reviews it is not always obvious if you don't have something running to look at.  It is a long trip to BestBuy.  Although not insurmountable I try to schedule it for a no rain day.  ;)

Living Room / USB TV tuner for W8.0 Laptop?
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 01, 2016, 07:24 PM »

It occurred to me instead of struggling trying to find streaming sources to watch stuff that is on local broadcast TV on my Laptop I might search for a TV tuner.

Does anyone have experience with inexpensive "self contained" tuners? Ideally I would like to plug a stick into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port and see the TV show on my Laptop screen. I'd rather not buy portable DVD. Not due to expense but I don't want to accumulate more stuff to lug around until I have an apartment or whatever.

I see some stuff at the egg quite cheap but I am not sure if I can view the output on my Laptop built-in screen in HD.

General Software Discussion / Re: MoveIt 1.3.3.4
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 01, 2016, 07:59 AM »
MoveIt 1.3.3.4  Added "One hand mode" to Tic Tac Toe window movement.  See revisions section of Readme.txt.

Basically sometimes it is awkward to hold down the control key while dragging a window to move it to a Tic Tac Toe position.  So I added a "one hand mode" methodology.  To use, hold down left mouse button on caption of window, then hold down right mouse button, drag, release left button, then release right button after the window moves.  To avoid context menu popup drag the right mouse button to desktop or off screen before releasing.

I didn't add it to the About Box.  Already too crowded and too complicated to add there.  But the Readme.txt revision section has the info.  If this mode interferes with some mouse gesture then keep running 1.3.3.3 instead as this is the only change.

I don't know if this would have any effect but you could try running the exe in Compatibility Mode as W7 or W8.  I only have a Laptop presently and W10 in a VM is just too slow for testing.  I don't want to risk updating until I have a "guinea pig" PC.  So I have no idea if it will help.  Just taking a guess.  :)

Skrommel hasn't been by in a while.  When you say "does not work" does it give any reaction?  Have you tried running it "as administrator?"

I know in Windows 8 if I press and release the control key it shows an animated circle around the mouse pointer.  Not as cool as Skrommel's graphics but at least it shows where to look.

thanks to you both for the tip.
I started watching, but got this compelling urge to eat (noodle soup would be nice but I'll have to make do with whatever's in the fridge)
:)

I am dying to pig out on Hong Shu Yoke.  I haven't had it in decades.  The closest I have come in Florida is Hong Shu Gai, which is chicken instead of pork.  In either case the chick or pork is breaded and cooked in a brown sauce with snow pods, mushrooms and other Chinese vegetables.  Then I dump in the fried rice.

I have to find a good Cantonese restaurant around here before I resort to vigilante action!!  :)

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Feature request - stay on top option
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 30, 2015, 01:59 PM »
Running Windows 10, I've tried Topmost Toggle and it works for the programs I've tested except for Clipboard Help and Spell. I guess the window that opens when I click on the CHS icon in my system tray behaves differently from other windows.

Does it show anything when you control right click the window?  Did you try running it As Administrator?  I don't know why it would not work as only the desktop, tray and a special control group window class are excluded.  In any case there are a bunch of free utilities that set topmost on the download sites.  This link may be a good start:
http://www.techsuppo...ting-top-windows.htm

Edit:  I also found this one on sourceforge.  I do not know how well it works but it seems like a simple implementation.  It may be worth a try:

You could try Topmost Toggle from my page

Control right click the mouse to toggle the Topmost attribute.  It works with most any window.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro 4.7.0.0[free]
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 29, 2015, 08:08 AM »
http://giveaway.downloadcrew.com/

2 hours 47 min left as of post modification date/time.

Note that if you have a giveaway version of 4.6.0.0 installed you may be able to update.  I installed 4.7.0.0 and it picked up that I was registered and told me how many days left on the one year registration.  It probably allows the update since it is only a bug fix release.  No new features.

I only use the simple defrag method.  The only thing Pro has that the free doesn't that I care about is the fragmentation analysis.  It shows the fragmentation in n.nn format whereas the free only shows the percent fragmented as an integer.  If your disk is .50% fragmented the free version reports 0% fragmented.  Using Auslogics defrag for a long time I seem to notice a slight performance difference from 1 to 3 percent or so.  If you install and delete a lot of stuff it can zoom to over 5% quickly.  Then things slow quite a bit.

But especially with RollbackRX I like to know just how fragmented the disk is since I have to uninstall before defragging to avoid scrambling the Rollback snapshots.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Shadow Defender 1.4.0 [gotd]
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 28, 2015, 12:10 PM »
Well, I can't get it to work right on my Laptop.  I click to manually go into Shadow Mode.  It pops up a splash that says Please Wait.  Then it says Shadow Mode at the top of the screen.  But the splash never goes away and I cannot minimize the window to tray.

I tried turning off hibernation setting, and running it manually as administrator.  Same thing.
At least I was able to uninstall it.  So I didn't have to restore from Macrium image to get it off.

GOTD is offering Shadow Defender again.  I am trying to find more detail how it is implemented.  If it uses a cache file and VSS like Toolwiz Time Freeze or some other method.

As of this post there is 15 hours and change left on the GOTD download.
If anyone has experience with this or even knows of in depth review(s) please follow up.

I uninstall RollbackRX so often, to get a macrium image backup of the current state, defrag etc.. that it may be cool to install this at times, esp. since it is free.  :)

Someone can't steal the flash drive if it's with you, they can steal the laptop but not the flash drive ... thus your data is still available.

He could always hide a pen drive with a copy of the backup, in a mayonnaise jar on Funk & Wagnalls back porch.  Nobody would think of stealing it there.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: backup strategy

I don't think a pen drive will do versioning and automatic backup realtime as I edit files!

The pen drive is just the storage.  The sync software does the syncing.  OneDrive detects file changes in its folders.  But I manually copy from my source code folders to the OneDrive folders.  But you could just as easily save directly to the OneDrive folders.  Then periodically download to the pen drive for an additional copy.

I don't know how much free storage they give now.  I got 25GB for signing up then another 100GB during a Bing promotion for a total of 125GB free online storage.

It may be worth investigating.
