Mouser's Zone / Re: Files created in Application Data and System32 directories

Mouser: Another way to do it would be to add the time information to the key itself, so that it only lasts for some time.
This also spares having different expiration dates for each program you install.

General Software Discussion / Re: Multi-threaded software
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 30, 2008, 04:44 PM »
Right now, I can't confirm this, but I'm pretty sure that a program being multi-threaded doesn't directly imply that it will run on 2 cores at the same time.
For this to happen, it needs to be programmed in something like OpenMP.
Still, one single application rarelly has the expected benefits from running in 2 processors, by Amdahl's law, which proves that if you have a serial part in your program (which all programs usually have), the speedup you get by adding more processors is severely limited (see the graph on the page to get a better idea).

So, like mouser mentioned, the best benefit is when you run several concurrent applications.

PS: I'm on vacations and can't test what I mentioned in the beggining of the post. Could someone just make a multithreaded app in C++ or Java or something and check if both cores are used? thanks

Living Room / Re: Cuil search engine

Hmm... A search for gridmove got a few results from software listing sites and gridmove's page isn't listed in the first 10 results even though all of the pages on the first 10 link to it.
Searching for 'donation gridiron got a hit for DC's first page (with microsoft's image, don't know why) but no hits for the correct page again.
My conclusion is that right now, it's pretty much unless.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows "safely remove device" thingie

@jgpaiva:

If Unlocker doesn't do it for you and your 64-bit system...there is always: file-assassin. If memory serves me well, there is a 64-bit version.
http://www.malwareby...org/fileassassin.php
I've been using process explorer's "find handle"/"close handle" feature, and it works great. I just wanted the simplicity of Unlocker, a few clicks and you're done :)
I'll look at file-assassin, thanks :)

Unlocker, truly one of my favorites and it works on x64.
It works for you?

Does unlocker work on Windows XP 64 or Vista 64? Not yet, I am working on it.
-from unlocker's webpage
I tried it some time ago, and it didn't work on my system (vista 64). Would it be that it was updated and now works? That'd be great :D

Now.. watch this: http://FantasticCont....com/?designId=64604
I think this is the best solution for 19 I've seen so far (and I've seen quite a few pages! :P). This one is just perfect in its simplicity, I think it can't possibly get simpler than this :)

Living Room / Re: Linux needs more haters

I've been reading the blog since zaiine posted this, and I'm very glad to see linux users recognizing the usefulness of it.
I still think that sometimes too much "hate" floats around the place (well, I guess that's the idea), but he sure points lots of the stuff that anoys me in linux and my linux-using friends often don't "get".
Let's see if it gets some real success and doesn't fall on deaf ears, so that soon we can all move to linux and make a www.linux.donationcoder.com section ;)

Tom: It works here.. Opera 9.52.
Now that I'm thinking... Could youtube be using different servers, depending on where you're located? That might be an explanation.
papoj1: where are you connecting from?

What browser do you use? (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc).

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Farr Alias: Window Management
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 23, 2008, 06:57 AM »
You don't need one, jan!
The "maximize" one is actually "toggle maximized state", so it'll restore the window if it's already maximized :)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: google dollar exchange rate plugin -- sketch
« Last post by jgpaiva on July 22, 2008, 04:37 PM »
You're right, Enzomaticus, it didn't.
But you can use Google Calculator to do exactly the same.
For example, to get dollar to euro, just type the following in farr:
gcal 1euro in usd
1170
herojoker: the results of the google search come up on farr itself, it doesn't launch the google search in the browser like the "search" alias.

s.newave: forget about my bug, must have been a strange mommentaneous configuration, I reinstalled the plugin and it's all good now.

This idea is just great!!
And I just found out how to describe DC: "DonationCoder.com is a site where people support each other through donations to make software".
At least, that's what I figure, from the following image:
Screenshot - 2008_07_22 - 1210-58.png
Made from the DC About page. :)

PS: the fact that "people" and "software" are the two largest words only shows that the About page describes DC perfectly!
1173
s.newave: this looks like a great plugin!
But I can't understand why, but everytime I type "gp", the options dialog comes up :(

It's good for linux users/developers to realize what's wrong with the OS. Even though I think the guy can get overly agressive (I don't think linux is THAT unnusable), he does make good points.

f0dder: I don't think hibernation writes the whole mem, only the occupied part (is MS smart enough to do that?).
For me, it'd be even worse, I'm on a laptop with 4GB of ram.. (4*1024)/25 = 2,73. Waiting 3+ minutes for the laptop to shutdown should be fun :)
Oh, wait, and then it'd have to copy it back on startup! Definitelly, as interesting as hibernation might sound, it sure isn't feasable.
