General Software Discussion / keeping/saving cloned files
« Last post by tomos on September 08, 2006, 09:04 AM »
Sounds like some type of genetic zoo  ;D

does anyone know if theres a way to keep cloned copies of a file (in Dopus you can have a virtual copy* but i want a hard copy)

Say I could clone a file & place it in two different folders, then if i work on & save a file from one folder I want it to update automatically** in the other. (They would be on the same drive)

Don't know will the following help or hinder your understanding, but sure here goes:

I'm working on drawings that I get in mixed batches (they are of archaeological sites in different counties) which eventually have to be filed according to what county they're from.

I work on them in the "Batch" folder (cause thats how they will initially have to be delivered)
but
I keep loosing track of whether I have the most recent version of the file in the "Final" folder (which is by county name).

*As i say I'm aware this can be done with virtual folders but for a couple of reasons cloned copies would be better for me. (mainly my backup procedure)

**Backup software wouldnt really be feasible for this - I'd have a different path for each file

Also I could just look at changing "the [filing] system" (from within!)

Screenshot Captor / Re: Problems with Opera

I realised that I hadnt used Screenshot with Opera before above post -
Today I tried to get screenshot of a selected region - it took the screenshot but then seized up. I was able to close it & the shot was there when I reopened.

today again I had a page that wouldnt print or allow me to copy all the text or allow me to view print preview - it crashes (coincidence or buggy..)

not complaining here - just trying to track things down  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: What to you think of RealPlayer?
« Last post by tomos on September 08, 2006, 04:20 AM »
no, it's QuickTime Alternative, you can download it here.
cheers,
got that!

on a totally unrelated note, I'm curious about your "footer":

form does not differ from emptiness,
emptiness does not differ from form.
that which is form is emptiness,  that which is emptiness form.

is that a quote from somewhere?
its a bit like that if you're drawing/sketching something - you draw the "something", you draw the spaces around it  -
you draw the "form", you draw the "emptyness"  :)

and the player, real (and quicktime) alternative are lighter, better in every way

I'm curious, esp re quicktime (it now downloads with itunes i think it is - a big download & one i dont want),
what do you use kimmchii?

Edit: or is the name of it Real Alternative ??!!  :D

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Very simple timeclock utility
« Last post by tomos on September 07, 2006, 09:56 AM »
Damn, this is a neat idea!
And evolved into a cool program, congratulations doublebogey!
You're definitelly getting some credits for this

Btw... I think it's logging way too much titles, ...

...Yet another request: so that the list won't become as big, would it be possible that when the AHK_ID was kept, the program wouldn't make a new entry? I say this because programs as opera or vim change their title frequently and tend to generate an ocean of entries. (maybe this should be kept as an option, as some might like it as it is)

for my purposes it would be handier say, if it just said: Opera, instead of listing each site as I change the tabs/windows. (It does make a very long file!)
  if possible!  :)

I just had to use it there today for a page that wouldnt print or allow me to copy text,

1) First time round: it repeatedly captured the taskbar (but a blackedout taskbar so ended up with repeated black stripes cutting across the image)

2) My taskbar hides (ausblenden), so i tried setting it to foreground/no hide & the screenshot worked okay.

Just tried it again, as in 1) above & it just siezed up.
[That was: Ctrl+Shft+PrtScr, then, Ctrl+Shft+Click; with Opera 9.01(edit), & WinXp]

Zaine
see this link for review of a couple of V.desktops
http://www.probo.com...blosxom.cgi/2005/Oct

author recommends goscreen in the end:
http://www.goscreen.info/

Ervard,
it would be interesting to find out a bit more about PowerPro and how you or others use it,
me, I use it to:

enlarge dialogue windows
right click on titlebar closes window
make various systemwide hotkeys. Ctrl+Q closes any window, phew! (Never did get to grips with Autohotkey - I'd never
make a programmer  :) )

I never got much beyond that, well, I do have a launchbar but its collapsing in on itself from lack of use since I got Find & Run, & I keep going back to the desktop in spite of everything.

Speaking of which (back to Virtual Desktops) I'd love something that would (easily :-[ ) allow me to make a few desktops with different icons, say graphics icons, tools, maybe a desktop for my partner who uses my computer occasionally.
Its not important to me whether programmes minimise to one window or all.

Carol recommended DM2 to me before but I couldnt even find a helpfile for it (it could be me !?)

I know Dexpot can do it, but after struggling through a couple of pages of directions (in deutsch & I'm not particularly good at it) I think i figured it out but it seemed painfully slow & complex. Also I've read elsewhere here that it uses a lot of memory ...

I read in above link that jspager's desktops show in taskbar - can you than  Alt-Tab them? Can you change the icons on its windows?
11284
still in, had a quick look at some of those links, but they'll have to wait till reasonable amount of stuff is DONE!  :)

so far I'm very happy with one thing in particular - my desk is clean and clear, & has been since monday morning.
That in itself gives me room to breath & somehow gives a bit of perspective too ...

just thinking "out loud" now:
i suppose you could use an index card filing system as well for the 43 folders idea (one folder for each of 31 days & 12 months)
11285
sounds like the head has thinned down a bit nudone !

I think I'm working roughly the same timezone as you, and working at home, and I'm already finding the "group/collective-approach/energy" very helpful. (Also got to get back to work though :) )
11286
thats the first time I've seen the desk timber in a while (or plywood or whatever it is!)
Thanks Mouser!

On completion I was reminded of Robert de Niro in "The Analyst", who, once he told his problem to the shrink, felt so enlightened that he thought he was sorted - me, I felt a bit like that too (who needs to do anything else now !?)

I'm unsure of the "work area" - I cleared the deskspace on my computer table cause I reckon thats where I be - so I'll be constantly reminded by seeing my todo list or index box.

Got 3" x 5" cards and am trying out the A5 templates from the hipster PDA site (todo, week-printout, month, etc.)

Also reusing an indexcard filing box of sorts that I was given at christmas to help me learn my german vocab (but I'm not a very dedicated student ... )
I decided to use the headings:

To do
Office things -    (e.g. Tidy Up!)
Help -               encouraging quotes, ideas etc.

see pic, (they are small cards - 2" x 3" inches, 5 x 7.5cm - I like the way you just put one thing on each.
Okay, off to work   :D  )

thats a nice suprise to come back to after my holiers!

thanks!!!!!!!!, tom

I'm using the free version of Sunbelt Kerio Firewall, AVG,
and,
I was using spybot, but started using Windows defender, cause it got good reports & I get download notifications from windows update - was using both for a while (Spybot + w.defender) but wasnt sure would they clash - (didnt seem to mind you)

Anyone have any opinions on the Sunbelt Kerio Firewall? And whether paid version is whole lot better? (I gotta admit I read about the differences & didnt understand ... :-\ )
11292
inininin!

looking forward to this ...
11293
Just give me some time ...

didnt mean to put you under pressure   :-[  :)
(the "nag nag " was related to workrave not directed at you ... !!!!  :) )

you have some great ideas too:
"I was also considering features that would make it good for the self employed that bill by the hour, allowing them to log how much work was done on a project, and to enter a rate of pay so that total billing cost can be calculated."

but again as i say:
I'm happily using THE Boss as is
11294
While RSI prevention tools do seem to have something in common with Instant Boss, at first, there is a big difference between the 2:

  • RSI prevention tools try to get you to work less and take more breaks. (great for the workaholic that works to the point of it being unhealthy)
  • Instant Boss tries to get you to work more and rewards you with breaks. (great for the procrastinator that doesn't really want to work)

I'm happily using Boss for both reasons.
but...

One thing I notice is:
when I get prompted to take a break & I select "work longer", it no longer prompts me to take a break. I'd like to see that included personally for two reasons:
1) I'm often surfin when i should be workin, so when i take a break I know I gotta get back to WORK instead of whatever...
2) Unfortunately, when I'm actually working, I work mostly with the mouse - if i dont take breaks I end up getting tennis elbow or whatever its called

I believe #1 is a big factor for a lot of people. Lets face it, if we're sitting in front of the computer & NOT working, the "Boss" isn't going to know, so if it pops up, even to say "take a break", it's still helping the work "regime".
Because of that I dont use the "work longer" option any more (cause then I'm just left alone) but use the skip break instead.. (postpone break X mins could be an option as well)

I used Workrave a good bit last winter but find I much prefer the Boss. Cant remember exactly why i stopped using it - I think it nagged a bit too much and would think i was working when at lunch or whatever & then tell me I reached my limit for the day:- nag nag   :)

For syncing bookmarks among several browser in the same PC, I've never found anything better than Bookmark Brigde (http://bookmarkbridg...forge.net/index.html)
Small, simple, efficient yet powerful and .... FREE!!!!
Give it a try.
-Second Shadow (August 06, 2006, 05:45 PM)

Yes, I'll give it a try!

thanks for the tip, second shadow, - I had gone back to just saving my bookmarks in Opera (mostly) or not saving any!
So, it sounds like just what i need

Okay I'm probably going to go a bit off topic here,
&\or because ..
me, I'm about as opposite as you can get from a programmer (!)
but!
I am interested in some sort of clipboard "Manager" that also saves txt notes - I've been using PowerPro's clipboard menu feature for the clipboard bit but dont find it that great.

Curiously, I've only now seen Mouser's Clipboard Help & Spell
Maybe I'll check that out first :D

hi mitzevo,
               nice review!

do you know which functions are disabled in the free version ?
Just curious :)
I'm going to try it out anyways, sounds like it could be a replacement for Evernote which I've been using less & less of late.

Ahhh ... just noticed its a trial version, (not a free version then?)
