Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Macro Express - MiniReview
« Last post by rjbull on October 12, 2011, 02:57 PM »
I believe the "learn by example" macro maker really comes from AutoIt, and maybe the two languages have diverged too much to make it really useful now?  If there are better ones, it's a shame they don't ship them as standard.

On the other hand, Macro Express seems to need more fuss and bother than it should.  I haven't found editing the macros afterwards especially easy, either, because the editor is so dense.

The developers deserve a huge amount of praise for grandfathering in the previously registered owners prior to their change in upgrade policy.

+1.  EmuraSoft have behaved in a most honourable manner.  If you have to make a change of policy, that's how it should be done.

Sorry, folks, I wasn't clear.  It's not the making of the slide shows that I'm concerned about at present - it's a suitable hosting site to upload them to, so anyone with a link can see them, like Jing does.

You might look at mouser's own Clipboard Help+Spell, which uses SQL.  If you do, take a look at this thread Feature request: Web clipping, permanent note keeping where IainB discusses how he uses it as a PIM/outliner.

If it doesn't absolutely have to be SQL, I'd suggest AZZ Cardfile, which has a very nice "find as you type" feature, or the similar-looking Notefrog.  AZZ has been around quite a while but the author seems to have disappeared; the current version has minor problems on late-model Windows, but there's a workaround in one of their threads, “The Program has Changed, Reinstall” Message

When it comes to substitutions such as regex or perl type business or even sed and awk I try to find stuff already tested.  I find figuring that stuff out more difficult than the rest of the program often times.
[...]
Linux. [...] I have to give credit when it comes to using prefabricated stuff slapped together to get stuff done, esp. with text.
Coloured by my own experience, I understood the OP to be suggesting a container for putting scripts of that sort in, or other text-manipulation tools, with the idea of calling them by hotkey, to directly operate on the contents of the clipboard.  You're right that figuring out the scripts and/or command lines themselves is another problem (and why I was bemused by the existence of mouser's Drag and Drop Robot).  This putative program would have absolutely the same effect as defining scripts as external tools in your favourite editor, but be a low-drag way of invoking them.

Both Clippy and Text Monkey are very capable, with a wide variety of functions.  But neither of them offer the ability to add external tools, as mouser's CHS does.

General Software Discussion / Recommend host for slide shows?

mouser makes screencasts to show features of some of his programs.  For the rest of us, there's Jing, but Jing seems to work on either single screenshots or five-minute movies, and you can't annotate the movies.

I'd like the equivalent of Wink, i.e., a series of screenshots that can be annotated individually, and assembled into a slide show that the viewer can step through at their own pace, including stepping backwards.  Can anyone recommend a good host for such slide shows?  I don't have Flickr or YouTube accounts, and maybe somewhere else is better.  Ideally I'd like at some space free, as it's not something I'm likely to do very often.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: CHS: New Formatting Dialog
« Last post by rjbull on October 10, 2011, 03:16 PM »
Now if you want to use a user tool, you simply configure it as part of a saved preset, which can be combined with all or no other formatting operations.  this is a key change.n and stdout as input and output, yes i could probably add that.

OK, I can't immediately picture what that will mean, but (eventually) I'll take a look at it.

text, hit the hotkey. Hit Go to run the script in the editor.  What's the difference?
Yes, you get the same effect, but you get it in less keystrokes/mouse clicks.  That can really add up.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: CHS: New Formatting Dialog
« Last post by rjbull on October 09, 2011, 02:26 PM »
As in tranglos' thread Is this a worthwhile idea for a program?, my "problem" with this dialog isn't the BRU-like density of the dialog itself, which after all works for BRU, but its location.  You have to pick a clip and activate Modify Format/Case to get to it.  In particular, the User Tools menu is an item under it, so that's one more layer to negotiate.  I originally thought that it should be accessed from the main Configuration dialog.

One more request, though not strictly relevant here.  At present User Tools expect tools that read from a file, write to a file.  Please would you consider adding the alternative of sending the clip to a utility that expects input from STDIN, and receiving the modified text back from STDOUT?  That would suit lots of Unixish utilities.  However, I'm given to understand that redirection and pipes are far harder in late-model Windows than they were in DOS.

I don't get it. If you can clipboard stuff out, then paste it back in after transformations, you can paste it into a programmable editor and paste it back?  Maybe I have to be there to see the obstacle.
Think of it in terms of streamlined workflow.  As in my earlier post re.: Clippy, mark text, press Ctrl-C, press Clippy hotkey, press Ctrl-V, job done.  Fewer actions than doing the same job via an editor.

no one has shown much interest in the feature so i haven't bothered to improve it.
Maybe IainB hasn't discovered it yet  :D

i don't want to take away from this thread, but i'd be happy to discuss it in the CHS forum section
Is there any way to sort of transfer the CHS-related posts above to a new thread over there, preferably retaining a link to this as the origin?

mouser, I think the scripting configuration might be buried too deep.  You have to pick an individual clip, then Modify Format/Case -> User tools -> Configure user tools in order to enter scripts.  It's certainly not obvious script-running possibilities exist from the main menu.  Should script configuration be an item on the main configuration menu instead?

Several utilities for modifying clipboard text (as opposed to saving clips) already exist.  Take a look at my post here in anandcoral's thread NANY 2012 Pledge & Early Beta: Paste Text Like.  In particular I'd recommend you look at Clippy, for two reasons.  One is that you can already set it up with multiple search-and-replace strings, though I doubt Unicode.  The other is for its streamlined operation.  You mark your text in the usual way, press the Clippy hotkey, then Ctrl-V, and your modified text is pasted back over the marked text.  I found simple and convenient.  You might find it interesting to compare Clippy with your current concepts.

Be aware that the Clippy Web site is often down.  It's a small program, and I've attached it to the referenced post.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: RoboForm 7 Desktop on BdJ today, 2011-10-04

Those who use and like Roboform, please indicate how you feel it is a timesaver or security saver to you compared to either home-made (lightly coded) password security or other alternatives like Keepass.
Like many others on DC I start from KeePass, so that I have my passwords in a secure, compact, portable utility.  Indeed, if you only wanted LoginIDs, it's all you need.  RoboForm's benefits to me are how slick it is, particularly at filling forms, and its extra features.

You can fill in forms with KeePass (and many clipboard enhancers) but you have to set up each form manually.  I find so many forms have different layouts that it would be tedious to set up each one separately, especially as I don't visit any one of them very often.  RoboForm has a magic ability to figure out how to match data with the fields in the form, whatever the form layout.  There are still occasions where it can be defeated, but in those cases it usually fails to enter something, rather than put in the wrong data.

RoboForm has SafeNotes as well as Passcards (LoginIDs), which is useful if you want secure free-form notes.  Available elsewhere, but convenient.

RoboForm will sync with my Palm Tungsten T3, as well as various smartphones.  I find Palm sync very useful, and it includes SafeNotes as well as Passcards.  That's one of the bigger reasons I went for the new update.

Roboform is clearly inexpensive with Bits [...] but passwords have to be synched with all your puters [...] And with multi-puter upgrade concerns, is any of this worth it ?
Passcards and SafeNotes are individual files.  I used to sync from one computer to another via USB.  More sophisticated solutions include Siber Systems' subscription-based cloud service RoboForm Everywhere and the portable RoboForm2Go for USB Drives.  For the latter, you need a license for each USB drive you operate from.

On the licensing, I would say that Roboform misled people with "Free Upgrades"
I started the thread Upgrading RoboForm from v6 to v7: worthwhile?, where this issue was thrashed around.  At some point Josh PM'd me with much the message above.  Although Siber Systems could and should have been clearer, I was then prepared to accept the current licensing terms.

Don't forget that you are still - I think - allowed to use RoboForm with ten Passcards for free.

Major security alternatives ?
[...]
b) Keepass et al.
There's a sniffy comment in the Bits du Jour thread about LastPass' site getting hacked, and I've even seen such a comment in the British media.  However, that will presumably not concern users of their desktop version.  There are other options that I haven't tried, e.g.

"Our New Product .. FormRobot :) .. no more RoboForm" This was combined with the fact that earlier versions were abandoned and quickly busted to browser changes and extensions.
I don't have such long experience as Josh or others, but I think that's not the case.  Siber Systems have to adapt their product as browsers etc. change, but I don't think they've had a consistent and deliberate policy of wilful obsolescence.
1141
But isn't that true of all clipboard enhancers?  Which begs the question, what are the special requirements of a code snippet program over and above regular clipboard enhancers?

For me, it's integration with the IDE past simple C&P, i.e. variable substitution, the ability to categorize, and the ability to highlight.
Should have known I'd get a coder answer that I wouldn't understand  :-[  Is the variable substitution like that in mouser's FLM, only able to pick variables up from the editor in the IDE?

RoboForm Pro v7 Desktop is on offer at Bits du Jour today, 2011-10-04, with 9 hrs 51 min left at time of writing.  It's $14.95 rather than the regular $29.95 (and $9.95 for a second copy).  That's $5 less than the upgrade price from v6 to v7 for existing v6 users.

In the discussion, numerous posts mention the "phantom lifetime license" that's already been heavily chewed over on DC and elsewhere.

In one of the posts, Siber Systems say that RoboForm2Go will be on Bits du Jour on 13th October.

I love how acetext just keeps a simple list of everything that's been dumped in your clipboard.
But isn't that true of all clipboard enhancers?  Which begs the question, what are the special requirements of a code snippet program over and above regular clipboard enhancers?

mouser, how are you intending to implement this?  By heuristics, or otherwise?

It's a feature that ArsClip already has, but ArsClip often gets it "wrong."  The quotes are because it's hard for ArsClip to decide what I'm really doing, if the program I'm using is general-purpose, like a Web browser or text editor.  So, even if you are intending to use heuristics, please will you consider adding an override after the manner of several sticky notes programs that attach to a particular window, viz., the ability to switch by window title, preferably with wildcards?

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: Txt Split & Sort
« Last post by rjbull on October 03, 2011, 02:32 PM »
The best (for me) file chunker I've ever seen is a 1988 DOS program, CHOP by Walter Kennamer.  It had the most intelligent way of putting the breaks in the right place for what I wanted at the time.  An alternative would be a port of Unix csplit, which you can find in more up-to-date compilations.  The way it splits may or may not suit you.  Neither will make directories as you require, but you could do that with batch files, perhaps augmented by utilities.

Details here:
  • CHOP31 (Free Software for DOS Web site)
  • CSPLIT (contained in UnxUtils Windows port)

@Ath: Thanks!  I suspect 4wd's comment about mail2web pre-dating Gmail and other Web mail interfaces probably means it also pre-dates SSL, though they should now catch up and add it.

Already there, just use https://www.mail2web.com - if you can believe Wikipedia, HTTPS was created in 1994, (3 years before mail2web), by Netscape but not formerly specified until 2000.
Well, well... sounds like one more reason to trust mail2web after all  :)

Thanks!

^ Thanks...  after I wrote my query, I began to wonder if you were tailoring InstaPhrase to people who use software, but don't necessarily love software.  Even if the core engine is the same, that seems very sensible.
