This'll really help, I usually disable mon2 while watching movies and all my apps there jump to mon1.  :D
Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Re: What are your top 10 Tech/Software Blogs?
« Last post by nosh on January 24, 2008, 02:23 PM »
To be fair, in his case I think it's more carelessness than anything else - I know for a fact that he forgets to posts links to the very software he writes about (not to be mixed up with crediting the source) sometimes - I had to give him  a heads-up once and he admitted he forgot.  :)

I admit, I got a bit carried away coz I know as a one-time casual blogger just how tedious it can get and for some people it's their bread and butter.

Martin from ghacks.net (which was awarded our best site of the month
<snip>

I hate to say this but I have been reading ghacks for a few days now and I've noticed that his content is far too often simply picked up from other popular blogs like Lifehacker, Digital Inspiration, Cybetnetnews. One of these blogs publishes a feed and *bam* there's ghacks a couple of hours down the line telling me the same thing in his own words. This is understandable coz let's face it - there is only so much original content. BUT, it really sucks and pisses me off to no end when a blogger as a matter of habit refuses to give the source credit or is just too lazy/careless to bother.

Let's all hope and prey (sic) that such bad practices are put to rest. Until then, a big thumbs down to ghacks from me.

From the last 24 hours (both Cybernetnews posts were published earlier than their ghacks counterparts, incidentally):

General Software Discussion / Re: Prompt Uninstaller; yet another rip-off
« Last post by nosh on January 23, 2008, 09:00 AM »
I swapped Safarp for MyUninstaller around a year back because of the additional features it provides.

Tried Prompt Uninstaller, right out of the box it tries to connect to app-zilla.com/...

Denied the connection, Googled app-zilla.com & got this (it links to a feed so a pic is more descriptive.)

It's nothing concrete, still, a case for outbound monitoring perhaps?

PS: Holy Cow! Was just looking through the DC smileys for the Yahoochat question mark dude and saw these!  Reserved for special occasions only I'm guessing ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Rotating JPEGs *without* changing modified date
« Last post by nosh on January 19, 2008, 07:12 AM »
Compupic Pro lets you make some lossless modifications (including rotation) to images and it didn't seem to touch the mod. date when I tried it right now...

Edit: Since this is apparently considered a 'safe' operation it doesn't prompt for file saving - just rotates the image on the spot and that's that.

About completeness: my goal is to build an exhaustive database, even for foreign movies. I guesstimate that it will take 3 to 6 month to come close to completeness. And if it occurs anyway that you find a movie missing, you'll just have to send me a mail and I'll add it.

I like the concept of an already existing database, especially for actors. My guess is most people would consider IMDB import a make or break feature in this category. The only way to keep up with the tons of new releases every month is to let IMDB take care of it.

1133
Guess I'll stick to alternating between DNSs then. Thanks.
1134
A relatively unexplored category!  :) I'm thinking a must-have feature for a software like this would be to connect to an online repository and contribute or download specific recipes to the local database with ability to modify it further.

I remember Barback from way back - it was (is) this humongous database of drinks.

General Software Discussion / Do DNS servers have any effect on bittorrent activity?
« Last post by nosh on January 17, 2008, 01:58 AM »
I change my DNS settings to the OpenDNS servers whenever the servers assigned by my ISP go down. I've noticed uTorrent keeps downloading even when my DNS servers are down, presumably coz I'm connected directly to some of the swarm.

I need two clarifications on this though:

1) Does a bittorrent client need a working DNS server to find new seeds/peers?

2) Does the performance of my DNS server affect my download speed? I'm asking coz I have a feeling my downloads are not as efficient when I'm using Open DNS as they are with my ISP's servers. If that's just a whim then I see no reason why I shouldn't stick with OpenDNS all the time.

I know of atleast one other program (ShellToys XP) that lets you hide unused items or club them up to a "rarely used" group. I haven't come across any other program that lets you create your own submenus though. Maybe there's something else out there...
1137

Hang me (not) if I am wrong

You're taking all the fun out of this but I shall try and answer your question anyway.  ;D :P

I'd say you're in the clear as long as it supports your main file manager, it would really suck if it didn't. I assume you wouldn't have got it otherwise...
1138
+. The free version lets you remove items you don't need but doesn't let you create your own subfolders, IIRC.

The shell context issue is the only reason I haven't given Opus a proper try. X² is not as polished but is fully compliant in that sense. I've posted about this elsewhere... you can categorize your context menu using something like Hace MMM (compatible with X²) which is a big help if you like shell extensions and the menu starts getting out of hand.

Easy Duplicate Finder is free and it's also the fastest dupe finder I've used. From the info you provided it seems perfect for the job.
http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com

DoubleKiller is a more advanced dupe finder

If you're looking for an image dupe finder, something that finds dupes even if pics have been resized, try Unique Filer

General Software Discussion / Re: FeedDemon going free
« Last post by nosh on January 14, 2008, 09:48 AM »
Nosh, I tried what you recommended, but it didn't work. Anyway, the updating of the feeds takes little time so >90% CPU consumption for a few minutes every 3 hours (in my case) is not a big problem.

My bad. The issue I was facing was with the CPU jumping up and staying that way even after it finished checking feeds.

FeedDemon is good-looking and full of features, but it eats a lot of resources (CPU and RAM) especially when it checks feeds (CPU can climb to 100%).

muntealb, this is a known bug, it can be side-stepped by disabling HTTP 1.1 (from within Internet Explorer) - I don't know the exact side-effects you incur by doing this but I haven't felt any difference in my browsing after disabling it.

Any other place and the attacks would have come fast and furious and have been way uglier than anything we've seen here. The reason these threads lasted so long and most responses were modulated is all thanks to the general tone set by mouser and the rest of you senior DC members. I hope he realised that.

Edit: I'm really intrigued by all this gri talk - am off to look at some of the originals.  ;D

ReNamer has an option for attaching itself to the folder context menu - you can also add it to the Windows SendTo folder (it has an internal option to do this too) so it can be used with files/file+folder selection combos.
1148
Toolbars are like training wheels on a bicycle - once you stop using them, you don't need them any more. :D
1149
Naah, I don't think he's talking about skinning the window at all - just customizing toolbar buttons via a bitmap.

No breakthrough features as far as I'm concerned.

v1709 Beta released.

A new version of xplorer2 is in the horizon and experienced users can now test it in advance. Big improvements are skin support, custom toolbar icons and support for vista's symbolic links. This is a BETA (test, bugs possible) version without installer; see the readme file for instructions.
