Living Room / Re: Pirating abandoned content?
« Last post by Armando on May 16, 2008, 11:04 PM »
The only abandoned software I've pirated is FARR. :P

Hey, I know the author... So, if you feel like sending him a few $. I've heard he's struggling and all he can afford to eat is mice.

I need a program to hold all my texts together, so a tree is necessary, only muti-tab is not enough.
that's is,  I want an info manager (can store all the final result), instead of a quick note taker (temporary take note and then move it too other place or delet it )

I know it's hard to find a better solution than EverNote/WikidPad/AceText/Mybase....
but just can not help searching it.

But some of these are not strictly "plain text"...

I'm personally using using SQLNotes. Still in development (ie : still changes a lot) and so probably not suitable for everyone, but I've yet to find another freeform database that allows for the same flexibility and power.

For just storing pieces of info here and there, clipping web stuff and finding it back -- using a category system or whatever -- Evernote is enough, wikidpad does a good job too.

For more complex operations and organization then there are  myBase, UltraRecall, InfoSelect, Ecco and many others... like SQLNotes... They're more what you could call freeform databases, and some of them could also be called PIMs

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Google Translation Plugin
« Last post by Armando on May 16, 2008, 05:11 PM »
I suspect the problem is that the update from the web is installing, but you have an old copy in a dif location which is not being replaced.

That was it. Many thanks. I don't know that happened... but it did...  :-[

It would probably be a good idea for adding a command in FARR to install a plugin, so as to avoid users having to manually unpack files in the FARR plugin directory themself.

Good idea, yes. It would certainly help to avoid that kind of situation.

(ahah, like I said before, I made that mistake so often myself that now I notice it every time I see it...  :) )

Hey guys, just want to mention again that it's wikidpad, not wikipad...  ;D I'm just saying because it helps to find threads about certain software when the name is well spelt.

Thanks for this nice newsletter. I probably spend in average an hour a day here, and... yes, I do go through the newsletter each time it comes out!  ;D

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Google Translation Plugin

Hi czechboy,

I'm having some trouble updating to the new version through the DC updater. Here's what I wrote there... : "DcUpdater always says that my "Google translate" installed version is 1.01.02 and that version on the web is 1.01.04, even after several updates.
Any ideas?"

Also, after the update, the language numbers don't seem to match the actual languages aymore. e.g. : according to the list, French should now be 10, but I found that it's rather 5 and English is 4... So it seems that only the language "presentation page" has been updated in the process, but not the actual real number-language association.

(Hopefully, what I wrote is understandable...  :))

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by Armando on May 15, 2008, 12:09 PM »
Hi tinjaw. How is the testing going? If you need any cues, do not hesitate -- as the documentation is quite sparse right now.
Any of your comments, criticisms, will help to improve SQLNotes, I'm sure.  :)

(A new build is coming -- probably today. Some little bugs were fixed, some options added, better MHT support, and gantt charts are getting there it seems...)

If you wipe the OS partition and have all software on a different one, after the reinstall of windows, chances are most of your software will work without needing to be reinstalled. And you might even have all your old settings that took so much time to configure.

This usually hasn't been my experience though. Subjective... anecdotal... I know.

But I found that I always got into trouble with some apps that would start behaving in weird ways (on Windows reinstallation... which doesn't happen often...)... and all these shortcuts that I have to recreate myself, etc. Not to mention that when you install stuff on another partition, you sometimes have to customize other things : some applications depend on others and you have to manually indicate where you've decided to install them... Nope, I find it's not worth the trouble.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by Armando on May 13, 2008, 12:50 PM »
I like comodo as well, but had various problems with it. Slowdowns, mostly -- but maybe has the software improved. See :

Oh! that explains much. Because Comodo with defense+ DID slow down my internet connection + 6s freeze with farr and Gridmove (both slowdowns related to INI files see this thread : https://www.donation...71.msg96875#msg96875, and this post https://www.donation...71.msg97613#msg97613 — NOD32 had a part to play, but was easily fixed, Comodo with Defense+ had the biggest part when t came to farr’s freezes). That'S the main reason why I finally decided to drop Comodo entirely, especially after reading that Comodo without Defense+ isn't worth much... See that post in this thread : https://www.donation...59.msg98810#msg98810 .

I've been using online Armor for a little while now and I'm very very satisfied. It is by far the best software firewall that I've ever installed on my computer. I've had some small issues with the free version -- the main one being that the free version can't save the configuration for later use... which can be annoying... So I've decided to buy (well... haven't yet, but will do when the trial period will end) the full version. The full version is really worth it. I fully recommend it. I'm running it with nod32 (v2.7). No slowdowns, no weird behavior and very good HIPS.

(oops -- little mistake in my last post.)

Yes I thought something like that was happening. Thanks mouser.

A year ago, I almost bought it out of desperation, trying to find a solution to the &?/#%$ "hidden behind the taskbar" tooltip problem. Yes, after some research, it seemed to be the only true solution to that problem!

(Although I seem to have been able to solve it pretty much... without tool tip manager. Can't remember if it's with taskbar activate... maybe  :-[ )

DcUpdater always says that my "Google translate" installed version is 1.01.02 and that version on the web is 1.01.04, even after several updates.
Any ideas?

(Chose to post that here, but could also be posted in the DcUpdater "Google translate" section)

General Software Discussion / Re: Super lite PIM? Address book?
« Last post by Armando on May 08, 2008, 10:02 PM »
I'll second Allen.

Evernote might be just what you need. Just type, enter anything you want in the main window (press ctrl+alt+n to open it), use templates if you want. Find everything back very quickly (search as you type).

Things CAN get a bit messy in EverNote if you don't think a bit of how you want to structure your category system, but never to the point where you can't find something. So you should be ok.  ;)

Allen's point about syncing stuff online, taking pictures + ocr etc. are all good points.

IMO, you can't go wrong with EverNote - v2 or 3.

Alternatively, I think that Outlook + palm could also do a pretty good job. There are sooo many addons for Outlook, and you could even configure farr to open a contact form, create a note, etc. very easily. Then sync all that with your palm if you have one.

There are also a number of PIM/Outliners out there that would do an excellent job. But might be too overpowered.

Find And Run Robot / Re: farr latest version 2 where are the exe files
« Last post by Armando on May 08, 2008, 07:27 PM »
Yes, good advice.
I just want to add this : open the "options" dialog (right click on tray icon, and find "options", or click  on the "options" icon on farr's main window), go into the "Search folders" tab, and make sure that the right locations are "ticked" (%PROGRAMFILES% should be ticked in your case, unless you keep your programs somewhere else...)

Carol : thanks.

Grorgy : Well, I 'm certainly partly on your side. I found that the ribbon brings a nice way of visually presenting options. The problem is when you want to have more options available, all at the same time, it kind of gets in the way. All things considered though... it doesn't seem to dramatically enhance workflow. It might just make it easier to learn about hidden options. And the MS Search Command Addin should really add to its functionality. I (not like others) don't see it as an awkward patch or a failure acknowledgment -- more as a welcomed addon allowing a different approach to the multiple options available.
