I think the template is great as it is now, it gives reviewers something to go by. However, if it gets much larger it will be intimidating ;) IIRC this is for a mini-review only. I really like the idea of a template though, its great and it absolutely will be a great help
hmm so what's more... a yes a couple of screenshots. Oh and the URL of course!

I hope this will encourage many users to write mini-reviews. I see this more of a guideline than minimum set of requirements that have to be fulfilled. Thanks a lot for your hard work, Josh!

I have been picking up money too, coins mainly. There has been an occasioal bill too but over the years it wasn't really that much. One time I found 20 EUR and said to my friend "OK, let's go in there and get some beers!"

It is randomly found and just as randomly spent.

but I think there's some usefulness in being able to differ between "I wrote a little program" vs. "I wrote a little script"

Where is the difference? And much more importantly: What's the use? (Many songs have been writting about this question, it seems kinda fundamental)

Of course we can't be all nice all the time, so here is a different page that makes fun of all the mathematically "challenged" out there. Please don't be too offended though.

I mean while their solutions would seem painfully wrong, they did follow certain rules to arrive at the solution. The rules applied weren't the ones taught so the result was wrong, but I think some of these folks should get credit for consistency or at least creativity:
six = 6

I just stumbledupon curiousmath.com, a web site about neat tricks you can do with math. It explains how to easily compute certain operations in your brain.

I does not seem to aim at the math professionals alone, but especially to those who feel uneasy when it comes to numbers. I haven't explored it very much yet, but I already learned an interesting fact about dividing by 7...

I recommend this because I think there are far too many people with an irrational (no pun intended) fear of numbers or algebra. As soon as they see a formular or have to calculate something, their brains lock up; but at the same time, most of these people manage to lead a household or go shopping without problems. I hope this site may help them to overcome this block.

My roomy has been trying it. Maybe I can get an interview of sorts from him.

There are neat ideas; it will have an impact on other (opensource) shells for sure. I haven't worked with it myself so I won't rate it, but I hope it is good; Might as well be the one thing they did right the past 10 years.

I would like to add a section "Why I think you should consider this", a more personal and surely subjective view.

« Last post by housetier on July 30, 2006, 05:01 AM »
I am most productive from 06:00 until 14:00, but that's also the time I sleep best. If I am on a job, I make do with mediocre sleep and good working hours. I just need to sleep a little more than usual. Unemployed as I currently am, I very much enjoy sleeping during these times, I feel GREAT when I get up.

Amurkans note: I used Military Time, it would be 6 AM through 2 PM in your timezone... ;)

Let's play with words a little. It won't be sound at all so don't get worked up over it.

We pick a
The Future of Business Is Selling Less of More.
This could mean you have fewer customers to which you provide more services. When we take that to extremes, you might have 1 (one) customer only, for whom you do everything. "Customer" of course means someone you give something (in this case almost everything) to, and from whom you get something else in return, money maybe. (Is your head spinning fast enough yet?)

Now, to entirely depend on one person only means you either have an extremely close relationship (child-parent) or you are a slave and master. (NOW I got yer heads in a spin, right?)

By now you are wondering where the connection to the original post is. When we accept the stretches and re-definitions of words and put them back into the original quote, we could say:
The Future of Business is Slavery.

General Software Discussion / Re: Scripting vs. Programming
« Last post by housetier on July 30, 2006, 04:30 AM »
In school I learned that every (part of a) program could be seen as following the principal "input-process-output". A function/method/procedure/sub is called with parameters (input), does something with them (process), and has thus changed the data, sometimes explicitely "return"ing it.

This uhmm metaphor can be extended: not only do functions call each other, programs can call each other; and to extend it even more: computers can "call" other computers to get a certain task done.

And when we are willing to accept that "The Internet" is a giant program, then a one-liner such as
echo There are $(dpkg -l *glib*|grep ^ii|wc -l) \"glib\"-packages installed.
should be considered a program too.

So what my teacher was getting at was not the looks, but how it was used: it's a program if it does something (anything!) with given data. No mentions of "professional" or "compilation".

Woah! There are so many features that I am not sure I will need them all. I don't even use half of stumbleupon atm.

However I will keep this thing in mind, in case I feel stumbleupon is lacking something and diigo might have it. I don't want to discourage anybody from using this though, it just seems too much for me.

I already have so many plugins installed:

If someone from dc.com tried it, I'd be very interested in a supertiny review :)

Living Room / Re: Mathematical Imagery Gallery
« Last post by housetier on July 26, 2006, 03:37 AM »
Fractals and Lyapunov are often seen together, both are used to create pretty images. I find the usual Mandelbrot and Julia sets somewhat boring. The graphic representation of an array of Lyapunov exponents is not a fractal though.

There used to be a program for x windows by name "xlyap", I can still find its man-pages on the net; it seems to (have) be(en) a part of a collection of xscreensaver programs. For windows I found this, and this seems to be a matlab program.

I was hoping Gnofract4D would have a Lyapunov function, but I couldn't find the answer on the site of the projet; I am guessing it is primarily for fractals. Another program I have to write myself, it seems...

« Last post by housetier on July 25, 2006, 02:00 PM »
I was in a mathematical research group at one of the Fraunhofer Institutes. Some fellow members worked on a project to improve ray tracing techniques; my "project" dealt with the Lyapunov exponent, basically a number that says how robust a certain iterative function is towards perturbation.

I'll skip the nasty details to say that one could normalize this exponent and make a color value of it. Chosing a nice color space, one could get amazing results. Some images where incredibly dynamic, others looked like they had a third dimension (which was impossible from the way the data was calculated and projected). Results also depend on the specific formular and chose perturbation pattern: slight variations of either could lead to completely different results.

Results are often spectacular!

I like cats very much. They are awesome creatures. It is a shame so few landlords allow pets in their apartments, despite the calming/soothing/positive effects of pets in general and cats in particular.

Since I cannot own a cat for myself  :(, I have to look at other people's cats. Thusly configured stumbleupon.com () stumbled me upon a collection of cats' facial expressions and their meanings. This is very funny.

You should add your own funny cat link here, so we can all share our cat love.  :-* :-* :-*

Phew that was quite an amount of information, right?

Well, wait until you have seen the list of software packages!

dpkg -l|grep ^ii|wc -l

-housetier@ganymede

dpkg -l|grep ^ii|wc -l

-housetier@jupiter

I should not forget to mention that "ganymede" is my laptop, whereas "jupiter" is the server. Other client names include "callisto", "io" and "europa"; these are the four moons of Jupiter that Galileo discovered. For geeks like me it is important to have a naming scheme; and let me warn you to never use a real person's name, it is not a good idea!

Phew that was quite an amount of information, right?

I could take the test only up to a certain point, then I was unable to see the text. This has happened before: it's the flashplugin for my favorite browser which makes flash sites not so fun for me.

The part that I could see was very interesting though :)

Living Room / Website: English for Runaways
« Last post by housetier on July 21, 2006, 07:47 PM »
What is a "Runaway" in this context

This is from a German book about the English language. The pun only works if you have a good understanding of the German language and average understanding of the English language.

Uhh.. ok, what is the website?

The website about common errors in English can be found here.

It's a rather big list, so I cannot resist to think that errors per se are a common thing in English. Nonetheless, I think this is perfect for flamewars that have turned into discussion about orthography. Or, you could use to look things up if you are not sure about certain terms.

It is a useful site, so use it!
