General Software Discussion / Re: Your most used SPECIAL programs
« Last post by fenixproductions on August 01, 2008, 09:52 AM »
It was hard to decide which applications are irreplaceable for me. I know that in this thread I should not mention PIMs, file managers, IMs, etc. but my "three little guys" are somehow related to the rest of my software and my whole PC also. I had heard about them and started to use many years ago. And I've never been unsatisfied.

These handy tools were provided by Sysinternals (now it is a part of MS) and are called:
1. Autoruns
2. Filemon
3. Regmon

The first one helped me many times to fix someones computer remotely and clean-up my own. With last two I have never had non-fixable problems with the other software I use. I am pluginoholic when it comes to Miranda IM or Total Commander and these guys always helped me to diagnose the source of the problems. I would really be ungrateful to Mark Russinovich (or/and Bryce Cogswell) if I said that I can replace their tools with something else.

These are small, powerful and can be treated like debuggers for my own OS.

General Software Discussion / Re: Large Text File Viewer

Yes, it was. But you should remember that standalone version is not so often updated as internal one. External - from 10th of September, 2007, internal - 23th of April, 2008.

For me simple view is presented by Shift+F3 keys combination which loads lister without plugins (F3 - with). And for standalone version you have to play with parameters. Of course: this can be one time journey also (if you want to add it to RMB menu).

Well... everything depends on user.

For viewing only I recommend free version of Universal Viewer.

Personally: I am using built-in Total Commander's lister.

Good to hear you're happy.

It's not complicated (not even 100 lines). Just getting blocks together in couple of minutes.

I've just been bored and put together few blocks ;)

So... if you've got .NET framework 2.0 installed then it should work properly:

BTW You can write down proper path by yourself easily thanks to auto-complete.

I am little disappointed. I've saw this thread and expected something new to read about. Old history but good finding after all.

Theoritically it might work. In practise: in many cases computers switch off ATX power handling if you choose such options. I've tried this option but each time it works for keys but gives "Now it is safe to switch off computer" message for standard shutdown. The only way to have both functionalities (no msgs, no keys) is to rip off the last ones.

And for university times: because of some admin's idea to take off privileges from ANYONE (even IT students), it was impossible to do what you advice.

You are lucky. During my studies *each* PC had a keyboard iwth power/sleep/somthin' buttons under standard Del/End/PgDn. Imagine the howling during lessons or coding tests. PC went crazy like woman's mood during "these days" ;)

BTW My fav apps:
- Total Commander - file manager,
- MirandaIM - multi-rpotocol messeging client,
- Opera - web browser,
- TheBat! - e-mails,
- small tools from ex-Sysinternals...

My childhood's views (behind window or near by):

Currently I have nothing unusual to show - just London from 8th floor (and no camera after all).

Just search for software for "dead-pixels lookup" or "cleaning monitors" tools.
Most of them have an option to display one colour for entire screen.

Sample one:

If it will be released as free I can always try to convince Ultima Prime to have it in his project (if you've got nothing against it) ;)
TC UP has similar tool called StatBar but this one is pretty outdated so UP is willing to "take" another one.

Very nice idea.
Being honest: I've always wonder HOW can people find anything quickly with so many icons on theirs desktops? I know that in real life I am a bungler but you cannot find such behaviour in my PC. Everything is clearly organized. Even "Start" menu programs are put into sub-folders and my Desktop contains 5 icons only!
There is something called "folders" to keep things clear. I don't really understand why so many people have so much mess ;)

About multiple IEs:
http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE

It is working good enough to check your website look. Unfortunately: it cripples IE7 installation (no ActiveX, no add-ons) but it is the best solution for one virtual OS (here: WinXp in VirtualPC 2007) after all.

This site might come handy:

For me 256 (GIF) and 24-bit (PNG) colours palette might be big difference. And also: GIF files presents transparency only (takes one colour from palette) while PNG gives variable opacity with whole alpha channel.

Little info:
http://www.w3.org/QA/Tips/png-gif
1143
Badly written example imho.

Personally I would use APNG for it:
- animation in PNG is supported in Opera 9.5, Firefox 3.0 and Safari (IIRC),
- transparency definitely not supported in IE <= 6.

I would use different "h1" styles:
- simple "h1" for older browsers (IE6),
- "html>body h1" for newer ones (IE7, Opera, Fx).

And at the end try to show "box model" problems ;)

BTW Text shadow is supported in Opera 9.5 only. OK, being honest: I don't know about Safari too.

Take a closer look on its description. It is programming language. No-one will ever "speak it" because it would be as nonsense as talking C++ or Pascal.

Just my 2 cents.
If you'd like to teach your younger brother / sister programming, here's the best choice:

Nice thing to play with, even for more advanced developers :)

You counter is not good enough. You forgot about the rest of the world.

I could assume opposite way. Back in Poland I've seen hundreds of PCes with OS installed by owners / administrators. Many of them bought pretty new machines and "forgot" (or hoped for friends) about buying Windows itself. The most of them owns theirs computers from second hand. Only very small amount of people I've met bought PC with pre-installed operating system.

After all there is some kind of strange feeling which comes to me when I tell someone that I've spent more than one salary to own my Win XP Prof BOX ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Inkscape
« Last post by fenixproductions on June 23, 2008, 12:22 PM »
I've been using it a while and I can honestly say that there is no better vector editor  which comes free. Latest Windows release gave so many changes that I am still amazed. I've already infected with love to it 5 people ;)

Unfortunately, there is not so many tutorials for Inkscape so I have to translate Photoshop / Illustrator ones for my friends.
There are still couple of bugs in it but it is better than i.e. OpenOffice Draw a lot.

BTW SVG format offered by Inkscape is very good solution for further purposes (Synfig).

Thanks for "Stella Awards". Funny to reading it is.
I think that Darwin ones are better to the sake of humanity.

You've got a point. It reminded me the cause of packing everything in foil bags which have a holes in it (IIRC some idiot almost died after placing his head inside a bag).
