New deal for Ashampoo Office 2008.

Click this link for a $4.99 price (not sure when it will expire):

http://r.ashampoo.com/r.php?id=24212&ri=tad8&lk=8e6icaPL

As always with Ashampoo, make sure you uncheck the unnecessary download protection and other junk add-ons.

I bought it on a whim during their last sale when they were selling lifetime licenses and I was in a mind to putting an end to yearly AV subscription costs.

Dang! I'd jump at something like that... Though $15-30 a year for peace of mind is a small price to pay, all things considered. Still...

Too bad you missed it - it was discussed on DC in at least one thread.  Anyway, if you're in a mind for lifetime licenses, Agnitum is currently selling lifetime licenses for Outpost Pro (but not the Security Suite as far as I can tell).  It doesn't include the antivirus, but is a lifetime license for the firewall (2 June 2009):

the 5 copies the fenix told me to give away will go to recent coding snacks authors.

Aw, man...  no one ever gives us lazy bums a break!

One day I might do something about that.

Hey - weren't some Total Commander licenses donated?  I know that some of them were being awarded for Mini-reviews, but I thought a couple were going to the semi-random giveaway draw (which aligns much better with my level of laziness).

Drive thru's which block you in so you can't get out when you find out "Our ice cream machine isn't working". ARGH!!!!!!!!

Never happened to me, but that sure does sound annoying!  The schadenfreude in me is making me chuckle as I think about it...  It might have made a nice little sub-plot on the old Seinfeld show - I can envision George Costanza doing something pretty funny in that situation.   They had one about a standoff over a parking spot, so why not this?

Here are a couple common forum behaviors that drive me nuts:

1. most forum software searches completely and silently ignore search terms that are 3 characters or less. Quite often this means I can't search for what I need (there are a lot of terms that are 3 characters, but are not necessarily 'cut words' like "the" or "are").  But for chrissake, tell me if you're ignoring something in my search terms - especially if it's the only thing in the search!

2. support forums that don't let you search unless you've registered.  If I'm evaluating a product or just want to see if there's a solution to a particular problem, I don't want to have to jump through the hoops of registering for a forum I'll probably never want to make a post in.

though DO has a leg up since I use horizontal panes and right now XY only does vertical.

Press Ctrl-F10.

Or menu item "Window/Horizontal Panes".

You are allowed to do crazy things like erradicate the administrators group. You read that right: you can make it so some user has full permissions on a file, but the admins don't. I have no idea how I managed to do this feat... and I fixed it now. But I'm really curious about what purpose this may fulfill[/li][/list]

Remember that this security architecture is designed to support large organizations (even military - to a certain level).  For  example, you have have an enterprise where the admins who maintain the systems are not permitted to access sensitive files such as payroll or heath records (this is actually probably quite common).  In these cases the admin group would not have permission for these files.  However, since admins are all-powerful, there is a 'loophole' - an admin is always allowed to take ownership of a file system object.  Once the admin is the owner, he has access to the file (or at least the ability to modify permissions to give access - the Windows security model is flexible enough to even deny owners access to file objects, but an owner can always modify permissions).

The one part of the loophole that admins can't close in this scenario is that changing ownership of the object gets logged, so if this occurs there's at least an audit trail (and if the admin deletes the logs, there's an audit trail of that).

       11. Confusing privacy policies that appear to have been written by monkeys - and I apologize if that offends any monkeys out there.

In the interest of reducing confusion, there are really only 2 types of privacy policy:

    1. simple to read policies that pretty much clearly state that your privacy will be repected to the extent permitted by law

    2. all others - no privacy protection is afforded.  See http://blogs.msdn.co...9/05/26/9640963.aspx for some details.

Coming up on BitsDuJour is a PDF editor called e-PDF: http://www.bitsdujou....com/software/e-pdf/

I haven't downloaded or tried this, but if it's half decent, the $10 price might be worthwhile (heck, even at its $20 regular price it might be worthwhile).

You can use something like SysInternals' ProcMon to monitor what process tries to access that key (set a filter so only something messing with that key will show up).  ProcMon supports boot time logging, so if something is accessing it, you should be able to catch it even if it starts early.

SyncbackSE profiles have a Priority option that can be set to Lowest or Idle.  I haven't use this option, so I don't know how much it'll help.

You can also set the profile to run when a change is detected in the backup source or to simply run every 30 minutes (or whatever).

OK, I just tried EmEditor...it is REALLY fast.  The fastest one I've tried as far as loading.  I like it a lot.

Be careful of the license.  If you install EmEditor on a corporate computer, you have no right to also install it at home without paying for a second license.  If you only use it at home, you can (IIRC) install it on up to 5 computers of your own.
Interestingly, the actual license that's displayed when you install EmEditor doesn't say anything about being limited to 5 computers (or one computer for commercial use).  The only restriction it mentions is:

LICENSEE agrees to restrict the use of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT to him or herself.

And there's a bunch of stuff that says that you are only permitted to use registration keys that are yours and that you have to keep the registration key private.  There's also a bunch of stuff about how EmuraSoft can terminate the agreement for any reason  - so I guess if you install on more than 5 machines that would be grounds for canceling the license (since no grounds are needed anyway).

But, the manual does clearly outline what what you mentioned so I suppose that's what EmuraSoft intends.

There's nothing about dual pane there.
It's not really a "dual pane beta" - it's that the current flow of XYplorer beta releases (which are usually about each day a new one) have started to contain changes that are the underpinnings of the dual pane support that Don is working on.

To put it another way, Don is working on Dual Pane for XYplorer and is right now releasing betas that contain the underpinnings.

Hey Curt - thanks for the pointer. This looks quite interesting, even if $99 is a bit more than I can justify for PDF editing (I don't have too much need, so the various PDF printers are pretty much good enough for me).  However, I might keep an eye out for if it ever goes on discount somewhere...

And by the way Curt, it looks like with just a little bit more you could turn this into a very nice mini-review.

Sorry for raising this thread from the dead, but if anyone is still potentially in the market for one of these tools, Visual Build Pro is going to be on BitDuJour in about a week (May 12, 2009).

It's still going to be a fair bit of cash compared to most software discussed on DC - $120 - but that's a hefty discount off the normal $300 price.

Vi (and its variants), emacs, UltraEdit, Zeus, EmEditor and others support (or claim to support) ctags.

SlickEdit supports its own tags implementation (which is at least as functional as ctags).

    « Last post by mwb1100 on May 03, 2009, 04:17 PM »
I've seen those keyboards and one thing I have wondered about is that they always seem to have a funny-shaped 'Enter' key that causes the backslash and/or delete key to be repositioned or made smaller.  Is there a technical reason for that?

That one seemingly small thing would prevent (and probably has prevented) me from buying one of those keyboards...

Where both are kind of lost is when doing ctags stuff (more IDE-like).

I've emailed the HippoEDIT author about this and he says it's on the todo list, but as it's a pretty big change/addition there are no promises or timeline.

My understanding is that DVDShrink circumvents CSS and some older additional copy protections.  However, since it has not be maintained for quite sometime, newer DVDs (with newer protections) do not work so well with DVDShrink.

AnyDVD is a drive filter, so it removes protections for any program which reads DVDs.

There are other DVD copy/backup which incorporate their own protection circumvention (such as DVDfab).  With those you would not need AnyDVD.

And there's no requirement that DVDs be copy-protected (though I think that the Blue-Ray licensing does require publihsers to encrypt BD releases - but I'm not certain about that).  I'm not sure what percentage are - I'm pretty sure that a large majority of major consumer DVD releases are protected at least with CSS.

Here's a blog entry that takes issue with some of the conclusions of another review of running OS X on a netbook:

    http://blog.expandri...road-test-is-a-fail/

The bottom line according to that guy - if you're using the machine within the realm of what you should expect to be able to do on a netbook (regardless of the OS), ie., that you take into account that a netbook is not appropriate for writing novels or doing heavy-duty development, then things are more or less fine.

For the screenshot above I turned on all the HippoEdit visual goodies. Note the progressively darkening background, which indicates tag nesting. Again, it's only for html.

It works for me in the C/C++ modes.  Maybe when you say "only for html" you're meaning it doesn't do it for XML (I can't check at the moment)?

    The Bad:

    - The name  :)

Heh - I agree. It seem inconsequential, but the name - and the icon - do bug me a bit (and it kinda bugs me that I find that something like that bugs me...).
