The beta versions (including RC2) also require a key to work. The keys were sent to the people who registered for the beta test. There was some time limit on those too :up:.

Directory Opus does look quite competent .. I remember it from the Amiga days too :-*.

However, I am somewhat discouraged but the comparatively high price, and the restrictive upgrade policy and license :deal:.

You can only install it on one machine .. what if you have a laptop too? buy another license!

And you get one year of point releases only .. if they release v9 in a month you have to pay again ::).

But it seems to be one of the most advanced explorer replacements available.

Let me kick this one off with one feature I think is essential to such a tool -- the ability to filter page contents to discard or pay special attention to certain information :up:.

Some of these apps simply check the time stamp on the html file, or some crc value of the contents, which is not very useful for dynamic pages.

Take for instance a page with a visitor counter somewhere, "1,234,567 visitors since January 1st, 1978" -- if the tool does not offer the possibility to filter that out, the page will appear to be updated on every check.

Personally, I think I would prefer if the winner is kept secret until the review is posted .. makes it a lot more interesting to see what happens each saturday.

It might be nice to reveal the category here in the members section one week in advance, and then we can talk about what programs we like/dislike in that category all we want, and the reviewer has a chance to pick up on any issues or alternatives he may have missed :Thmbsup:.

After all, a review is the reviewers opinion. Otherwise it would be a DonationCoder.com community award :mrgreen:.

Thanks for the clarification .. I guess I never experienced the smaller download because it only got updated when I was visiting -- probably about once a month or so. Either way, as you say, it's a pretty bad method of doing auto-update in AV software ::).

A bit late, I'll admit, but I wanted to mention one thing about AntiVir Personal vs AVG ...

I had AntiVir Personal installed on a relatives machine for some time, and while it was quite nice (even though the GUI could need an upgrade from the Win3.11 look), it had a really silly update procedure. They were connected by 28.8k modem, and AntiVir Personal insisted on downloading a complete 4.5mb installer and reinstall itself each time it was updated :wallbash:.

After switching to AVG, it's usually a 400k virus definition update, which is much better :up:.

Of course if you're on a cable connection, it doesn't matter much  ;).

I think the flash movies were a great idea (albeit somewhat large, as you noticed). Some things are hard to explain in writing or show with a screenshot, and it also gives a chance to see the program 'in action' :up:.

Filebox extender looks quite nice .. I hadn't seen it before. I liked the added feature of being able to toggle windows always on top.

The interface is slightly less 'fancy' than PSHotFolders, but it seems to have more options.

Only thing that might worry me a bit is that it's v1.90 and you get free updates up to the next major version number :mrgreen:.

How about a tool to search through your harddisk and find all icons (both ico and embedded in exe or dll files), and display them in a nice way. Letting you sort/filter on different criteria, and save any you might find useful.

though you do have that nice wildcard library you wrote i could use for that :)
i should also probably make the filename matching case insensitive.

Ah .. I initially thought it was handling programs by window title, in which case wildcards would be more important. They might still be handy for filenames though, like e.g. adjusting priority of development tools (C:\VC\*.exe). Case insensitive matching would be a very good idea ;).

True. It's important to keep the main focus of the application in mind, which I suppose was a tiny tool to limit cpu usage.

Btw, that's a slightly odd color in the back of quotes .. perhaps a calm blue would be better?

Here are a couple of things that might be nice (some from your list):

  • ability to adjust cpu usage limit
  • wildcard matching of program names in ApplicationOverrides.txt
  • use ini-file style for the override file, with sections for ignore, idle, high, kill instead of having to specify it for each program
  • gui for configuring rules
  • ability to switch between rulesets from the tray icon
