Neat! I had no idea about the mobile share API.

1. Unzip the zip file into wp-content/plugins/.
2. Activate the plugin.
3. Donate 1 Million USD to me because I need it.

Looks like I don't meet the minimum requirements. :( :P

Maybe not THE worst, but pretty close...

This one (Gnesa - Wilder) still takes the cake, IMO:

Thanks! I perused a few of the links to see what they'd say about alternatives to a few things such as Windows, Office, and Chrome. They were all pretty much as I expected (Apple or Ubuntu, LibreOffice, and Firefox, respectively).

Also, I kind of hate the almost-but-not-quite Comic Sans font they use on their site. It makes it hard to read, IMO.

But when I looked at alternatives for Google Drive I found out about Nextcloud. I'll probably be setting up my own Nextcloud in the next few days to try it out.

There are a number of Python books currently on sale for $5 on Packt.

I tried linking directly to the Python books, but they use characters in the URL that don't play nice with BBS formatting.

I'm with you, tomos. But this did just give me an evil idea:

Fight back email scams with ransomware. :D

It seems I'm not the only one who had this idea:

"Infecting a scammer's PC with wannacry"

P.S. I haven't watched this video. I just saw the title/thumbnail. I make no claims as to the quality or veracity of the content.

Android Apps / Re: android app keyboard

I don't think so.

It's a feature of Gboard to help you set the location of the cursor precisely without having your finger in the way. Swiping the keyboard left or right moves the cursor left or right, respectively.

I suspect that this thread was created to facilitate a spammer to advertise some Android keyboard app sometime in the next few days/weeks. :'(

But it seems it has initiated a decent discussion nonetheless.

I cant yet figure out how to easily change (already chosen) language keyboards in it.
Try swiping the space bar sideways...

This just moves the caret back and forth for me.

I asked around in the Telegram group and it seems the USB drivers are currently broken or unavailable. But a stable driver is going to be released soon, "most likely this week" so I guess things are on hold until that point.

My second attempt is going better... sort of.

I actually made it to a setup screen. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be any power/data to the USB ports. So the USB keyboards and mice I've tried plugging in are not responding, or even receiving power.

General Software Discussion / Full Windows 10 on Raspberry Pi 3!
« Last post by Deozaan on January 16, 2019, 09:45 PM »
I came across this tweet thread saying full Windows 10 on Raspberry Pi is possible, linking to this Github repository for instructions and details on how to do it.

I've got a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ not doing anything worthwhile, so I decided to give it a try. My first attempt was unsuccessful. I'm making another attempt as I write this, but decided to post about it here in case anyone else would be interested and maybe we could help each other get a working install.

In my first attempt, I tried Windows 10 Pro 18237 image and the 1.2 Core Package. After deploying to the SD card I plugged it in and attempted to boot up. Eventually it just got stuck in a BSOD boot-loop. The stop code is DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS.

In my second attempt, I'm using the same image but trying the 1.0 Core Package. If there's any interest, I'll report back on things later.

Unity updated their Terms of Service once again, to clarify things and as a response to recent feedback:

Today’s change in our TOS means Improbable is no longer in breach by providing you a service, and that we are able to reinstate their licenses. But we do not consider them a partner, and cannot vouch for how their service works with Unity as we have no insight into their technology or how they run their business.

We know Improbable was in violation even before the December TOS update and misrepresented their affiliation with us. Although SpatialOS is not a supported third-party service, it can continue to be used for development and shipping games.

They also made a nice change going forward so that changes to their ToS won't affect you retroactively:

Retroactive TOS changes

When you obtain a version of Unity, and don’t upgrade your project, we think you should be able to stick to that version of the TOS.

In practice, that is only possible if you have access to bug fixes. For this reason, we now allow users to continue to use the TOS for the same major (year-based) version number, including Long Term Stable (LTS) builds that you are using in your project.

Moving forward, we will host TOS changes on Github to give developers full transparency about what changes are happening, and when. The link is https://github.com/Unity-Technologies/TermsOfService.

Unity has responded. Here's an excerpt (with some emphasis added by me):

Partnering with technology companies is key to our approach in providing a robust game engine across many platforms. As such, we were excited to listen and explore ideas with Improbable when we started discussions more than two years ago. Unfortunately, Improbable chose an approach which doesn’t involve partnering with Unity, but instead involves making unauthorized and improper use of Unity’s technology and name in connection with the development, sale, and marketing of its own products.

More than a year ago, we told Improbable in person that they were in violation of our Terms of Service or EULA. Six months ago, we informed Improbable about the violation in writing. Recent actions did not come as a surprise to Improbable; in fact, they’ve known about this for many months.

Two weeks ago we took the action of turning off Improbable’s Unity Editor license keys. This is a unique case — and not a situation we take lightly — but Improbable left us no choice. This was the only course of action to protect the integrity and value of our technology and Unity developers.

We believe that even though Improbable is violating our EULA, game developers should never pay the price for that. We have been clear with Improbable that games currently in production and/or games that are live are unaffected, and we would have expected them to be honest with their community about this information. Unfortunately, this information is misrepresented in Improbable’s blog.

And also:

We’ve made it clear that anyone using SpatialOS will not be affected.

Projects that are currently in production or live using SpatialOS are not affected by any actions we have taken with Improbable.

[...]

We have never communicated to any game developer that they should stop operating a game that runs using Improbable as a service.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Interesting Game Jam on itch.io
« Last post by Deozaan on January 06, 2019, 05:50 PM »
Hello i am new here and I just joined the Gaming Like it's 1923 Game Jam on itch.io.

Hello, and welcome.

And good luck on the game jam!

I'd love for more game coders to share their progress on these game jams with us here.. We'd love to follow along and hear how you are doing and see progress screenshots, and talk about ideas, etc.

In my experience, there isn't enough time during a game jam to write much of anything about your progress other than a tweet or two. It seems a better thing to do would to post a link to your Twitch page (or similar) in advance so people who want to follow along can view your livestream or something along those lines.

That said, I do agree with you, mouser, and I would be interested to follow along and hear how someone is doing in a game jam if they feel they have the time to post about it here.

It took me a while to even settle on this one.  I now have ideas for how I want to re-write it for multiple file formats, so that can be my 2020  ;D

I guess it's true then, that hindsight is 2020.

For what it's worth, I'm using about 4 GB of storage in my Gmail account which I've been using since ~2004.

Maybe 15 years from now I'll also be using around 4 GB in ProtonMail.

I take it that you're using a paid account... at what level are you subscribing?

Not so. I'm using the free tier. I was an early adopter so they gave me at least one extra perk. Free accounts get 500 MB of storage and I have 1 GB of storage, of which I'm only using <10 MB. I have no idea what, if any, other bonuses I get for being an early adopter.

I wish they had an even smaller subscription tier. I'd gladly pay $10-12/year, but $48-$60/year makes me question if I really need any of the additional features, the answer to which has been no thus far.

Seems promising, though it's not clear that they support my Pale Moon browser.

I don't see why it wouldn't. I've logged in using Firefox, Tor (Firefox-based), and Chrome or Chrome-based browsers. And of course they also have Android/iOS apps.

And apparently the messages one sends and receives eventually expire. That gives me pause.

That is optional. If you're really paranoid and want self-destructing messages, you can set an expiration date. But by default they do not expire. Or maybe I changed the defaults in the settings so long ago that I forgot? Either way, you can opt out of that if it isn't already opt-in by default.
