N.A.N.Y. 2016 / Re: NANY 2016 Release: SysTrayIconsManage
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 12, 2016, 12:18 PM »
I haven't tried the utility yet.  What I have found on OS behavior ever since Vista is even if you check the box that says "always show icons and notifications for all" or whatever the wording is, unless I uncheck that option and manually set each an every icon to show both the icon and notifications, then recheck the box, the ones that were not manually set will not be shown.  It is like the check box is a placebo.

Have you run into anything like that or is it just on my machines?  :)

Use the Classic Theme Restorer.

When using this I found Theme Font and Size Changer handy.  I don't run a multi-tab AddOn so the changer is handy to set the tab color and font to make them readable after changing to the classic theme.  It can also make menus easier to read without resorting to reading glasses or the Windows magnifier.  :)

Does anyone use SearchWith

I don't quite understand how to manipulate the configuration.  If I SearchWith Web then it just seems to do a Google search.  I don't see the "each engine results in its own tab" that the author talks about.  Maybe it is too easy and therefore over my head.  I'm a bit baffled I must say.   :-[

Edit:  Ok.  I get it.  If other than the default engine for the category is desired one is supposed to press Shift yadda yadda.  Not a bad AddOn.

Found Deals and Discounts / Auslogics bitreplica 2.1 [100% discount]
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 11, 2016, 11:12 AM »
I have a data partition that I was backing up using Total Commander's sync function.  But I was curious about this bitreplica since it is designed to back up data and I saw it free.

http://www.windowsde...iscount-coupon-code/

As of this posting there is 1 day 11 hours and change left to download and activate.  But it is around on several sites.  I am sure I could set up one of the free sync tools to save the data on my partition to a USB stick.  But this looks like something designed for a lazy person.  For $0 I am sold!!  :)

I tried doing a Macrium backup but there is no incremental on file by file backup and backing up to a partition image actually increased the size since all the stuff is binary, like OS iso images, mp3 etc..

There are many backup schemes in bitreplica.  I chose the incremental.  It just does a straight copy.  No compression is attempted.  The first time it just copies everything.  After that it only copies new or changed files to the destination.  It seems like it will keep multiple versions on the destination storage.  It will also use the Cloud such as OneDrive but I think it suffers from the same problem the one drive sync client has. Namely it wants to have the sync folder on your system partition, which kind of defeats the idea of having a separate data partition.  There may be some way around this but I haven't searched that hard to find it.  I'm looking to hit the button once a week while the USB stick is in the port and that's that.  :)

I can tell you it installed and activated ok.  After it sends the registration info it still says you only have 5 backups or whatever.  Just close the program and reopen and then it shows as activated.

It is the usual deal.  No support.  No upgrades.  No cost.  :)

Journalist Dan Gilmor (...) moved to Linux.

Wow! Now that's hella interesting stuff! Are the movie rights for this very discussion-worthy story sold yet?

...

"I moved to Linux" is the new "I am a vegan", huh?

Hmm, you think it could be another Hunter S. Thompson in the making?  :D

@Miles: Could be. Trash talkin' is soooooo 70s. And it's so "been done" that it's about due for a revival right about now don't you think?  ;)

Sounds cool.  Beats watching hackers type fast into an off the shelf Laptop to hack into the Pentagon.  A blog as output seems a lot safer.  :)

I hope the marketing types don't light bulb that Hybrid and Harley both start with "H" else Harley Hybrid(tm) is only a matter of time.

I hear Ya man. But it's already been explored by OCC (eek!).

Whoa!! A 60 mile range?  It could take a long time to retrace the route taken by Fonda and Hopper in Easy Rider!  ( Edit: Unless maybe it's a misprint and it's supposed to be 600 miles? )

Shitski - Good point. I didn't realize there was 2 of them and linked to the wrong one. That one is straight electric (e.g. not a hybrid). However this one is the both gas and electric powered hybrid.

Thanks for keeping me straight. :D

Next big thing will be bikes with air conditioning.  :)

Someone who uses Audacity or another program may have specific instructions.  In the meantime I would suggest checking the Sourceforge forum for Audacity as someone may have asked the same question.  Also I found a write-up of 25 free audio editors.  One of them may have an automation feature as well as batch processing.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 06, 2016, 07:10 PM »
I bit the bullet and told it to 'Download Now, Upgrade Later' ... in my case, Microsoft's definition of 'later' was a bit different from mine.  The download started immediately and when it was finished it said it wanted to restart to perform the upgrade ... WTF!?

Really? Is that how it works? Is there no backing out at that stage?

Since my System Restore does not work anyway, I have Windows Update set to Never.  For those who wish to leave the service running I think there are utilities to turn off the aggressive W10 forced updates.  You might check Softpedia and some of the other download sites.  In the Softpedia Windows Desktop News page I keep seeing mention of their release.

MoveIt 1.3.3.5  Fixed a regression introduced by "one hand" mode that broke Control drag and Alt drag of window.  All three drag methods should work correctly now.  As usual, the download link is in the first post.

Any tips for upgrading to Windows 10 now?
=> upgrading from 8.1, I'm going try keeping programmes unless advised otherwise.
I've installed all security updates for 8.1 (other updates *not* installed)

TIA

I never installed it on the metal.  Just in a few VMs and not lately.  There is a friendly bunch who have messed with it extensively on this forum who may have some good advice to share.

Started reading it, before I finish I want to say that I hope the article doesn't say 'GIMP is as good as photoshop' or 'Libre Office is as good as Office', I know almost 100% of Linux users will always object or flame such a statement but those two are not as good (just generally, not about missing thing here or there), sorry they are just not.
I have been ~90% on Linux the last two years and believe me they are not. If the article includes those two statements I will be forced to dismiss it  :P

I think I spent the most time on Linux without constantly booting into Windows when I had Mandrake 9.1 and kylix installed.  I did  a few small programs in kylix to try it out.  But the main benefit was a general text editor with Windows style key bindings.  Such a relief.  Although if I was forced to use vi I could do it.  I could see it was very powerful.  Just no fun eating the learning curve.  :)

I did try Gimp for Windows in a cursory fashion.  It is quite different going about the tasks than any Windows graphics editor.  I didn't absorb the learning curve or use PS enough to come to any opinion.  I think I tried PS for a few days one day.  :)

Throw it real hard... :D

Microsoft Windows 10 active on 200M devices

I wonder how many of the 200 M devices have owners trying to figure out
Just upgraded a Win7HP x86 system to Win10 x86 using 10586.0 ISO then let it update and it shows v1511 b10586.36 - so go figure  :-\

What happened to the "one size fits all" scheme?  It seems every day on Softpedia the Windows 10 news is about some new specialized release.  Or maybe I was behind the door when they abandoned it officially?  :)

Supposedly it is a rootkit detector.  The "feature creep" may be due to free rootkit detectors being available?  I don't know.  Just guessing.

But yeah, on VirusTotal there are so many scanners I never heard of that I refuse to start sending notices my stuff shows as a false positive.  Every time I knock one down I'm sure three more will pop up to take its place.   It's a time waster.  Especially since the person sending in a notice of a red flag in the VirusTotal list is determined to ignore the 45+ green flags.  It's so stupid.

About 15 and a half hours left if you wish to get UnhackMe 7.90 free from GOTD.

I have never used it.  Apparently it has expanded the things it looks for when scanning the system.

Skrommel's Software / Re: MouseMark on Windows 10
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 05, 2016, 06:59 AM »
okay.... I feel stupid.... I didn't realize that you had to hold down the hotkeys. I thought you could just press them and it would do the little animation (kinda like the windows pointer location function). Nope... you have to hold it down for about a second for the crosshairs show up and as soon as you let go, it stops.
Update: MouseMark now works on Windows 10.

Cool.  Skrommel probably did it that way so inadvertently hitting the keys wouldn't set off the animation.  I didn't look through the code but that is in line with how he often coded hotkeys.

Good idea, but it didn't work for me. I tried running in xp, 7, & 8, with and without admin.
Do you know if mousemark is opensource?

I can't speak for the author.  But I assume he always posted the source as well as binary so that the user could fix errors or change hotkeys.  Editing and recompiling for your own private use shouldn't be an issue.

Skrommel's Software / Re: Desklock running on Windows 10

Another possibility is an overzealous AV scanner that removes the executable while doing a start-up or full system-scan, as many AHK compiled .exe files are suspicious by default, for most AV scanners :(

Good point. AutoIt3 code is often flagged falsely too.

Edit:  Another possible cause would be a "time freeze" or "shadow defender" type utility that discards all system changes on reboot.  It can be very easy to enable one of those and forget it is in "shadow mode."
