thanks for your help dk70

unfortunately
neither worked for me -
the about:config one didnt work, but then I couldnt erase it so tried the other too -

I'm going off to sleep now & might try again another day,
but think I may have some quality that causes things to function not as expected - when it comes to modifying programme files at any rate .. :-\

I have TabMixPlus installed anyways so theres no problem with space  :)

Actually, you can point PDFCreator to wherever you have Ghostscript installed:
Open PDFCreator from the start menu.
Select "Printer -> Options".
In the "Program" box, select "Ghostscript".
From that dialog, you can manually enter a path to gswin32c.exe, wherever it may be.
Hope this helps.
Yeah!
thanks Edvard,
would like to clean that all up  :)
cheers, Tom

http://kb.mozillazin...er.tabs.closeButtons show how to rule close button - so a value of 3 will be "(Firefox 1.x behavior)".
didn't find that very clear -

does anyone know which file I'm supposed to edit -
is it:
userchrome.css
usercontent.css
user.js
config.xml ??

or is it something else -
I couldnt find "browser.tabs.closeButtons." in any of those files
maybe I'm supposed to add it myself,
as i say, not very clear to me from that link - any further advice would be mucho appreciated  :)

Also, note that the Kaspersky suite is available as a AOL-branded product and is available for free! Even if you aren't an AOL user. I've been using it for about three weeks now.
You sound happy with it - no problems with spam ?

thanks Ervard
but,
na,  its not in my programme folder
so I installed it there myself (seperately) -
its a bit scrappy cause PDFCreator seems to (in its own folder) have everything that should be in the GS installation except the exe file(s).
So now I have 2 sets of GS font folders etc.
But it works for Scribus,
and if it doesent work for PDFCreator I'll probably remove it

There are also some settings for width of tabs, before the hated scroll icons kicks in. I use Tab Control https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1480/ to get new tab next to current, covers a bit more.

No way around Tab Mix Plus if you want much more - http://tmp.garyr.net/ use Dev build for 2.0. See forum thread, very old stable dev-build. Be careful about Undo and session manager/crash control in TMP, 2.0 have own so disable one of the two. Session manager can still be used to manually save/restore.

TMPlus also gets new tab next to current, yeah, that makes FF much nicer !
A great range of options there

Unfortunately,
far as i can see, I loose this:
I do like in FF that if you close a tab it jumps to the neighbouring one
but I'm keeping it  :)

http://weblogs.mozil.../top_ten_addons.html sad I think. One of the best known Firefox employees come up with 5 extensions and 1 is a theme, another a search plugin! May be they really need some new blood at top levels ... Those who like extensions/tweaking shouldnt care for 1 second but majority dont use any or have the time/interest to fill gaps.
cheers, I'll have a look  :)

You can change where you want your tabs to open in your settings ( Tools = Options = Tabs ) Check it out.
thanks Mizraim,
but,
if I want them to open in the background, they automatically open last tab to the right.

I do like in FF that if you close a tab it jumps to the neighbouring one,
as opposed to in Opera where it jumps to last used -
a pain in the ass if you're trying to systematically close tabs.

Of course Opera has (or should have*) the thing where if you click on current tab it will jump to last selected tab which is really helpful.

*I say should have cause the last couple of updates this works for a while (for me), then gives up, & thats with 2 fresh installs (one for Opera 9, a second seperate install cause Profiles dont work in Opera 9)

pros & cons ... :-\

I havent been using FF for a while but installed 2
It looks a lot better than the old FF "out of the box"
but
this thing of not showing all open tabs,
& then, when you open new tab it goes to the end of the queue (if you want it to open in background) & you gotta search for it,
I dont know,
doesnt seem good logic to me, or maybe Im missing something.

Disclaimer :): I'm an Opera fan.
I go back to FF for adblocking & Flashblock,
makes internet a more peaceful place,
but,
also back to it now cause I invested in Surfulator which doesnt work with Opera.

if that is the one from JAWS then it doesn't use GS as far as I know anyway.

na, its same name but different maker (it open source i guess cause its on sourceforge.net)

sounds like no problem with GS anyway, thanks

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: I can't figure some things out in this program
« Last post by tomos on October 18, 2006, 10:52 AM »
"(IsFavorite=true)" was missing from my Clip H&S
which left me very confused about function of favourites :D

all sorted now

Am i right in believing you can only read 1 to 9, & A to Z ?
So if you have older clips in there, they can't be seen.
Or I think the favourites go down the list (being older too)

So
I'm wondering is there a way to clear some of the Quickpaste items if it gets overfull AND if I dont want to delete them completely?
I thought i could move them to another "folder" but that doesent remove them either

Scribus looks really interesting - nice find. It reminds me rather of PageMaker before Adobe bought out Aldus. It is still a bit rough around the edges too - I noticed text handling was a bit iffy (eg. if you change the font size it doesn't change the line spacing automatically so everything ends up overlapping or overspaced)
-Carol

well, at least you got it installed !
Actually I have it installed but on startup it looks for Ghostscript.

I installed PDFCreator lately with the latest version of Ghostscript (one exe).
Scribus couldnt find it so I went looking for it & guess what - I couldnt find it either,
PDFCreator is working so I can only think theres no seperate exe file for GS.
I posted at Sourceforge but got no response so far.

Dont know
1) how important GS is to Scribus (presume its only for EPS's import or export)
2) if i install GS seperately will there be problems

Anyways,
As i said earler i havent any experience with page layout as such, but its something I've being wanting to learn/explore a bit.
Looking at a scribus tutorial I find I'm very interested, also either i know a lot of it already or its relatively easy  :)
The tutorial does emphasize using text Styles which I guess would get around -
if you change the font size it doesn't change the line spacing automatically so everything ends up overlapping or overspaced
-Carol
but i can see you'ld prefer it just "worked"

Freehand, which i use, is also usable for page layout but it's not it's main function so its not so intuitive (again, i havent looked at that aspect of it much)

Oho! Sounds very promising. Have you gotten a chance to play with this yet? Just about anything has to be better than Quark. ;D
- Oshyan
I've installed it but it hasn't "found" ghostscript - think there's something in the FAQs about it but I havent had the time yet ..

I won't be able to compare it anyways cause I havent used Quark OR Indesign.

"Scribus is an open-source program that brings award-winning professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X and Windows desktops with a combination of "press-ready" output and new approaches to page layout.

Underneath the modern and user friendly interface, Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK color, separations, ICC color management and versatile PDF creation."

It seems to be a good website, good FAQs (I found them helpful anyway - I don't know much about page layout myself ...)

Take note!:
I just installed this but got told i should have Ghostscript installed first

11219
wow, that puts things in perspective,
thanks hugo.

I'm not qualified to offer App any advice
but: hold your head up high ...
who needs goe ?! :-\  :)
11220
Well, I'm still fairly  :)  enthusiastic -
even though I would say the progress has been slow, it has been steady.
its true,
there has been progress, it has been steady

but

I still seem to spend a lot of time doing things I "shouldnt" be doing - posting here, checking out Scribus or whatever new & interesting programme I've heard about most recently - [have you heard of that one, Scribus? ;D ?] - when I "should" be doing whatever is on my list - if I even have one drawn up that is.

Maybe I *should* stop using that word "should"  :o
I know when I do things, I get a sense of satisfaction - "job satisfaction" - call it what you will.

The problem I find is that when I do these "other" things, I consider that time as wasted,
and then I put myself under huge pressure to catch-up with the "official" schedule.
I end up not talking enough breaks, working frantically, working late, being exhausted.

I'm not qualified to offer App any advice, I think the difference with me is that this GOE is actually helping me because I was so so so disorganised before (& getting even less done)

Its important (mainly for me  :) ) to remember that this project is helping me a lot, its also good to be honest, and maybe then go and have another look at the "encourage me" list !

PS. Scribus is at:
http://www.scribus.net/
(Its Open Source Desktop Publishing - apologies if I'm leading you astray ...)

Hi Mark,
a sort of a technical question here re:
I've always recommended that if you use a to do list (I'm not very fond of them myself) that you don't write it out again each day but keep the pages until they are complete.
would this refer to "Will-do" lists as well,
or,
seeing as they are of a daily nature, would you recommend rewriting the things that dont get done* each day?

*I know things should get done, but, at the beginning its sometimes hard to
a) guage what you can do
and
b) be disciplined  :)
11223
Well, I'm still fairly  :)  enthusiastic -
even though I would say the progress has been slow, it has been steady.

The/my successes have been:

The Current Initiative: I really enjoy doing this every morning. I find its a great way to break myself gently into the day!

And, the organisation of the paper workspace. See this thread.
Also, I'm using "Baby" index cards (3" x 2") for getting ideas down - I check them every day & add selected to a Will-do List for the following day, or to ToDoList programme (still a bit unsure here)

I print an A4 modified "Daykeeper" from (A5 template at) 43 folders & have some of my will/want to do list pre-printed on it
TomsDayKeeper_03.gif

At this stage I can see it's the time management thing thats slow to change for me (or should i say: for me to change)

To that end I wrote a list that I try to "practice" (at least a little more) everyday. (I'm concentrating on my weak points here)

End of the day

Use "Daykeeper", write Will-do List.
Plan the (following) day

Beginning of the day

Current Initiative

Plan first 2 hour stint in datail.
(set physical alarm or set Instant Boss "cycle" to 2hrs)
Report on your 1st 2hrs. (Any behaviour you'ld like to reject? Chuck it out the window! Start again!)
Plan next 2 hours
Start something new, then take a break!

Repeat!
Repeat!

Dont forget to cross things off the list when done.

Give yourself points a la Forster (one point for each thing on list that gets done, provided everything on list is done)
-My "encourage me" list

thats it at the mo,
tom

GOE: THE GREAT DONATIONCODER.COM 2006
GETTING ORGANIZED EXPERIMENT
- WEEK SIX -

"A WEEK OF REFLECTION"

The deadline for this assignment is October 16.
(click to read intro to GOE and all assignments)

STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING,
take a moments time in the hustle-bustle of Getting Organised and Getting Things Done,
a moment to reflect and contemplate, and yes, you can even meditate if you want :)

Brew a coffee or scald a teapot, put the ol' feet up -
and ask yourself:
"How'm I doing?"

Let it all rattle around there for a while ..
...
have a look at the questions below,
and then post:
and
let us know how you're getting on with this project,
- and all the other projects you're supposed to be doing, or, wishing you were doing   :)

     So,

  • How am I getting on ?

  • Are you still enthusiastic ?
(If so , about what in particular)

  • Have you noticed your old (unhelpful?) ways creeping back in?

  • What habits do you find particularly difficult to change?

  • Have you actually implemented any new methods in your life, or are you just absorbing the knowledge still?

  • Which methods do you find particularly difficult to implement?

  • Strengths:
What were you already good at in terms of organisation and getting things done before you started this project?

  • Weaknesses:
What were your challenges (i.e. what were you struggling with) when you started this project ?

What has helped you so far to face these challenges ?

What difficulties continue, or have you new "struggles" ?
(Where would you like to be helped)

  • What tips so far have you found especially helpful ?

  • What has been your most surprising discovery so far -
    e.g.
    about getting organized and/or the way you work;
about trying to implement new systems/time management
    about yourself (getting personal!),
about life in general (getting philosophical..)
