Somehow the domain that the newsletter sends out from (donationcodernews.com) wasn't set to autorenew and briefly expired last week.  That means that some percentage of recipients of the newsletter never got it.  Sorry!  The domain is back now so all should be good going forward.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How does FARR Updates its Catalog?
« Last post by mouser on July 10, 2012, 11:11 AM »
Read this thread for a discussion of what makes FARR different from other Launchers -- the issue of indexing is discussed.

The bottom line is that currently FARR does *NOT* use an index/catalog -- that means it is always searching the live and current contents of the directories it searches.

The advantages of this are a lower memory footprint and always-up-to-date results.  Some people use FARR specifically because it does not use an index.  The disadvantage is that it makes FARR less suitable for full-disk searching.

Later this year I plan a major new version release that will include the OPTION of indexing.

NOTE: FARR *does* cache the list of recently launched files, so that after you launch a file even once, it will be found instantly in subsequent searches.  So if you find that FARR takes a bit of time to find the program you want to launch on the first search, rest assured it will be fast the next time you search for it.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Freehostia (Free Website Hosting)
« Last post by mouser on July 09, 2012, 09:40 PM »
Let me start by saying the web hosting marketplace seems a den of fishiness.

BUT having said that, I'm slightly uncomfortable with such a mean negative attitude towards a company offering free hosting..

I don't doubt that they may have unrealistic limits on the number of simultaneously connections, but somehow the limit you described seems too bad to be true, like their might be some more innocent explanation why the connection limit was reached in your case.

Regardless, I just think we should save our mean comments for people and companies that are deliberately trying to exploit people -- and when in doubt, the benefit of the doubt would be a more appropriate attitude.

I can just imagine someone trying to do a reasonable thing by providing free hosting and coming across a post like this and feeling like they were not treated fairly, and I'd have a hard time disagreeing with them.  Though I do respect the fact that you emailed them about it and got a pretty unsatisfactory answer..

Just my 2 cents -- obviously I don't know anything about this company -- they might be good people they might be bad people, i have no idea.

Newsletter for July 9, 2012
"100 Days of Summer Slumber"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hello dear readers and greetings from Illinois, where I've been hiding out in my air conditioned bunker while the temperature outside breaks the triple digits.  It's been nearly 100 days since the last DonationCoder newsletter, so this is going to be a big one.  I apologize that it's taken so long to get this one out, and I promise it won't take so long to get out the next one.  The last time we talked we were just kicking off our March fundraiser, which turned out to be a wonderful success.  A huge thank you goes out to everyone who donated and cheered us on.  The fundraisers have such an invigorating effect on the site -- I can't overstate the morale boost they provide.  Thank you all.

On other news, we've been very steadily working on the transition to a new content management system for the website, which will make it a little easier for us to update and maintain content.  DC member Mitzevo is leading the project and the new site layout looks great.  Unfortunately, it's proving a not insignificant challenge that we have so many different esoteric areas of the website, so we still have quite a ways to go -- but that's the nature of the site so what can you do?  Ok enough rambling, onto the newsletter sections!

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We love nothing more than having interesting discussions on our forum -- and we love when new people participate in the discussions.  In each newsletter we try to highlight a few topics that we think might interest casual readers and that are good candidates for making your first post.

3. Mouser's Software Updates and Discussions

Since the last newsletter there have been a bunch of updates to my software, some minor, some major.

4. Skwire Empire Updates and New Releases

DC member Skwire has been unstoppable on the Coding Snacks area of our forum -- writing new freeware utilities on request, and constantly releasing updates for his existing tools.  Lots of new updates this month, plus one big new one for comic book archive readers:

5. Other Coding Snacks and Member Projects

The Coding Snacks section is one of the things that people love the most about DonationCoder -- it's where anyone can post a request for a custom piece of software -- and often find the requests granted overnight by one of the coders who inhabit the forum (like DC members Ath, MilesAhead, c.gingerich, 4wd, and others).

6. Mini-Reviews

In the past few years we've drifted from larger reviews to user-written mini-reviews, and we've had quite a few posted since the last newsletter.

7. Fun, Humor, and Amusements on the Web

You've made it half way through the newsletter, so let's have a break.  Go make yourself a lemonade, and check out these fun websites and videos!

8. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the DC forum take the form of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. These posts wind up in the General Software Discussion section and make it one of the most active sections of the DC forum. This is a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware-related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we split the recent content into two sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

9. Specific Software Discussion and Software Services

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

10. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out...

11. Developer's Corner

The title of this section shouldn't scare you off - there is definitely something of interest for everyone here! It's more than just a section for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial ideas, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active recently.

12. Hardware Hideout

Although most of our forum discussions are about software, there are always some interesting hardware and gadget threads popping up.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Program is running ! or not ?
« Last post by mouser on July 08, 2012, 02:48 PM »
First things first -- it's clear from that response that there is a previous instance of the program already running.
The only question is, why aren't you seeing the system tray icon for it.

There are two possibilities -- one is that you have windows configured to hide unused icons; if you don't know how to configure that let us know and someone can help.

The other is that you are experiencing a bug where the system tray icon of SC is not showing -- i've seen this happen when the system is set to autologin a user on bootup.  Do you have such a setup?

You did give me an idea however and i will make the next version auto refresh the tray icon when a second instance is loaded.

Also, just try hitting the PrtScr key and see if that brings the icon back.

Living Room / DonationCoder Poker Tournament is Scheduled!
« Last post by mouser on July 08, 2012, 10:27 AM »
I'm thinking tentatively that the DC Tournament will be held on August 11th, Saturday, at 1pm Eastern Time.

It will be Texas Hold 'Em, probably "pot limit".
Obviously there will be no real money involved. Everyone will start with 20,000 chips.  It costs nothing to enter so why not?

At the end of the tournament the winner will get some real world prize: A custom DC mug or shirt designating them as the winner of the 1st annual DC Poker Tournament, and maybe some bonus prizes (some board games?) -- and of course, bragging rights.

I think we should try to link to a few tutorials and places people can learn how to play.  You don't want your first time learning how to play to be in the tournament.

Maybe what we can do is run some practice tournaments on Saturdays at 1pm EST leading up to the real one, so people can get the hang of how the client works, and so we can work out any hiccups.

Install the client from www.pokerstars.net and join the DonationCoder club by following the instructions stephen provides below, and practice getting used to the client.  Use your donationcoder member name (or dcMEMBERNAME) so we can recognize each other.

glad you like it

Wonder...to avoid this discomfort, shouldn't the "Numpad Keys Launch Result" go DISABLED by default?

it's a good suggestion actually.

The only reason I've told you not to get one was I didn't want you to wake up one day and regret it..  But if you're taking random requests and you're at 1500+ posts, I guess you could do worse that a little Cody tattoo..

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR and Indexing Option - Feedback Requested
« Last post by mouser on July 06, 2012, 01:43 PM »
My plan is to have FARR move from v2 to v3 with the addition of (OPTIONAL) indexing this year (2012).
11170
Really small update this time, but an important one.  The new print captioning option (an important one) was not working when triggered via the optional post-capture dialog.

v3.08.01 - July 6, 2012
  • [BugFix] Automatic Print Captioning was not working if triggered from the optional post-capture dialog.
  • [Change] Improved menu captions for delay and autocapture items; changed autocapture options to allow faster than 1s captures.
11171
Thanks for saying so.
Hopefully there will be some more substantial CHS updates this year, now that i have shaken the rust off.
11172
Not many new features, but this updates CHS to my new setup packages that are digitally signed, with an easier portable zip download option:

v2.13.01 - July 6, 2012
  • [BugFix] Paste menu for Favorite group (and other virtual groups) was not showing clips that were manually placed into that group.
  • [Minor Feature] Added balloon tray warning the first time an image exceeds configured limits on clipboard save size.
  • [Minor Feature] Added option to not autofit column headers in grid view (may be useful if you have a very large column)
  • [Feature] For portable users, program now checks for ConfigDir_Default.ini if ConfigDir.ini not found; prevents your custom ConfigDir.ini file from being overwritten when unpacking portable distribution zip.
  • [MajorFeature] Executable and setup are now digitally signed for extra security; instead of a zip-compatible installer, there are now 2 separate downloads for installer and portable version.
  • [Feature] Added new check for text from commandline tools triggered via Modification Presets, so they can be checked for Cancel or Error.
  • [BugFix] Modification dialog was opening up with checkboxes checked for "custom tool" by default.
  • [BugFIx] Sendkeys method was not sending tabs correctly to some apps.
11173
Minor Update:
v1.36.01 - July 6, 2012
  • [BugFix] Improved startup time.
  • [MinorChange] Clears screen as soon as it starts, before preparing first mosaic.
  • [MinorChange] Much faster to exit immediately after starting up -- useful if screensaver kicks in when not wanted.
  • [MinorChange] Use the 'n' key to advance to next arrangement of images/quotes in full screen mode (used to be spacebar); spacebar will exit if configured to exit on keypress.
11174
Nice find.

I still have a somewhat hard time wrapping my head around some of the FOSS money-raising approaches when the possibility of forking is always looming in the background.  Forking may be more of a theoretical concern than a practical one, and my problem may simply be that i let the theoretical longshot issues concern me too much, but it still concerns me.
