I usually keep a copy of this link on my menu:

http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/cmd/

687 commands in alphabetical order!

Might not be the best thing for a novice, since you'd need to have some idea of what to look for first. These might be a little better for them:

http://xinocat.com/r...rd/refcard-en-lt.pdf (my fav!)

http://www.pixelbeat.org/cmdline.html

http://fosswire.com/...command-cheat-sheet/

And this to get a quick overview of what commands are available rather than how to use them:

http://www.steptux.com/Linuxcommands.pdf

And if any of these don't do it for you, here's a site that has a page linking to another 70 cheat sheets:

Linux-Unix cheat sheets - The ultimate collection

Feb 07, 2008 at 6:15 am - 82 Comments

http://www.scottklar...ultimate-collection/

This is a compilation of approx 70 cheat sheets for Linux users. There are a grip load of commands that Linux users have at hand which can seem very daunting to a novice. This collection will make Linux just a little less of a headache to learn.

Suggestion: Look through all of them and then choose the top 5-10 you think will help you the most. Print them out and then get creative. You can laminate and hang them on the wall around your desk, or create a small binder that you always keep in reach. Or you can use them all for inspiration to create your own master sheet that suites you best. If you do make your own, put it online and post the link in the comments - You'll get a lot of free traffic from here!

BTW: It shouldn't be too much of a hassle to do your own "quick-ref" background page. Fire up your preferred grahics app and have at it.

<edit - oh wait!! Edvard is already on it>

Happy hunting!

Cool list, but your sorting and ordering skills seems lacking  :P

Got news for ya, it doesn't stop there either.

Much as I admire (and owe) Linus Torvalds, I'm slowly coming to the realization that the more I get to "know" him, the less and less I seem to like him.

Hmm...

Since we're dreaming, I'd like an Edirol UA-101 (or FA-101) Computer Recording Interface.
Ten channels of 24-bit audio goodness. It doesn't get much better than this.

How about decent USB audio support on Linux? Would that count as 'better'? ;D

Yes it would. But I said "since we're dreaming." I didn't say "since we're hallucinating." ;D

P.S. My girlfriend just read your wish for decent USB on NIX. Her comment: "Well...it's good to have a dream." ;)

I'd much rather people around the world use Linux than steal Windows

BUT, Microsoft'd much rather people around the world steal Windows than use Linux  (lesser of two evils, of course, not that they're necessarily happy with it)

Now that is a very interesting thought! >:D

Most of the fun went out of computers when I started using them for business, rather than just as a hobby.

That happened to me too. That's why I started playing with Linux.

Hmmm...but now that Linux has become part of my business, I wonder if that will happen all over again?

Sorry to be so clueless :-[, but what's  4.2.2.2-6?

Not at all clueless. These are publicly accessible DNS servers belonging to Verizon/GTE.

Their IP addresses are:

4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5 and
4.2.2.6

I'm not sure why people use OpenDNS when there's many good free DNS servers out there (eg: 4.2.2.2-6) Those in combination with rolling your own cacheing server, and you'll have a more stable and fast system then what openDNS provides, and a tad bit more privacy as well, without the ads.

I think the key factor is IF you are rolling your own caching server.

It's generally considered 'bad netiquette' to trample on vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net bandwidth for day to day DNS if you have other workable servers available to you.

That being said, here is a link that lists some additional public DNS servers:

I was going to slipstream, but I simply didn't care enough to take the time to do so. I installed from scratch and updated to SP2 in about 45 minutes, and then let automatic updates have at it. I really should look into it though...

Nah! Your approach is probably better for a single machine anyway. I try not to use the automatic update feature because I've usually got a lot of bandwidth tied up downloading Yet Another Linux Distro. (Really bad jones I've got - fer sure!)

I also have two sisters, so I've got something like eight separate family machines to support. That's why I use an offline update utility where I can download everything once, and then hump a CD or two over to each machine.

Get's me in and out a lot faster too! ;D

The end result is that I no longer feel qualified to express opinions unless I am prepared to do battle, High School Debate Club style.  That's not fun, and not why I come here.  I am not a newbie -- check my stats.

So, I'll go back to posting fun/amusing doo-dads and leave the heavy debate to the more qualified.

Have fun.

We will. Hope you do too.

I wish I XP provided an option to get rid of all the desktop junk and icon nonsense in favor of a blank screen with a pop-up on right-click menu arrangement like Xfce provides.

I use a combination of no-icon desktop and well-organized Start Menu.  Works great.

I pretty much do too. But having to dive to the start button on a big monitor is becoming more and more of a pain for me. (I think I'm finally starting to feel the years a bit... :'(

Right now, I'm semi-faking the functionality of xfce by using Direct Folders 3.3 ( www.directfolders.com ) but I'd still prefer that "feature" to be built into Windows itself.

Ralf: There's nothing wrong with having an opinion, or a strong feeling about something. But the one thing you can expect at DC is to have your opinions challenged and debated. It's pretty much in the nature of the place from what I can tell.

I've had my butt handed to me on more than one occasion when I've posted something on DC that I either: didn't properly think through, articulate clearly, or double-check for accuracy. And I've benefited from that experience. I know it's improved my forum skills - and it's definitely encouraged me to become (with mixed success) a better writer.

It's also made me painfully aware of how easy it is to fall into the trap of truthiness. (see quotes below*)

Don't bow out (or yield) if you think you've been misunderstood. It's not a competition. We're all seeking clarity here, no matter how divergent our points of view. So please, get in there with your facts and rationale for why you've formed the opinion you have - and share it with the rest of us.

Look at it this way: You may be right.  :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.wikiality.com/Truthiness

Truthiness is what you want the facts to be, as opposed to what the facts are. What feels like the right answer as opposed to what reality will support.

~ Stephen Colbert
October 17, 2005 The Colbert Report
[/b]

Truthiness is the reality that is intuitively known without regard to liberal ideals such as reason and logic. It is the truth that is felt deep down, in the gut. It can't be found in books, which are all facts and no heart (except for the one true book, I Am America (And So Can You!) It is absolute, and can only be infallibly known by the gut of Stephen Colbert. It can only be felt by Americans with huge brass balls.

In the past decade, occurrences of truthiness have tripled in the United States. The rest of the world, sadly, lags far behind.

American Dialect Society's Word of the Year

On January 6, 2006, the American Dialect Society announced that truthiness was selected as its 2005 Word of the Year. The Society described its rationale as follows:

"In its 16th annual words of the year vote, the American Dialect Society voted truthiness as the word of the year. First heard on The Colbert Report, a satirical mock news show on the Comedy Channel, truthiness refers to the quality of stating concepts or facts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true. As Stephen Colbert put it, 'I don't trust books. They're all fact, no heart.'"

Apparently after realizing that "truthiness" was found in the Oxford English Dictionary, the Society later changed the wording of this press release on their website, from "First heard on The Colbert Report..." to "Recently popularized on The Colbert Report..."

Hmmmm...

Out of curiosity, why does an organization that sponsors U.S. and Canadian horse rescues register its domain to an address in Portugal?

Is this organization registered to conduct business in the United States; and if so, is it also a registered non-profit entity?

The website doesn't have very much information as to who is actually running this group, other than a list of names and e-mail addresses (all of which point back to savedahorses.org).

There are no tax IDs, bios, street addresses, or financial statements posted anywhere on the website that I could find. And although the website mentions rescues that took place in 2007, the domain savedahorses.org has only been registered since 12-APR-2008.

Also, none of the reported rescues have enough information (or even a link) for anyone to verify the veracity of the claims.

My girlfriend and I are both "horse people" and lifetime contributors to various animal welfare causes. And while we applaud people who share a sane view of animal rights issues, we also like to know who we're dealing with before we contribute or get involved.

Unfortunately, something about this website leaves me just a little suspicious.

I'd really appreciate if savedahorses could give us a little more information about this organization.

The only real knock I have on XP is its desktop.

I'd truly love it if you had a little more choice in desktop management. Especially since all the 3rd-party desktop replacements I've seen are even worse than what Microsoft came up with.

I wish I XP provided an option to get rid of all the desktop junk and icon nonsense in favor of a blank screen with a pop-up on right-click menu arrangement like Xfce provides. Combine that with a Quake-type dropdown terminal window (i.e. command prompt) like Yakuake and I'd be in heaven.

RadarSync doesn't even know which Opera version is the latest so how can I trust both? Hmm...

I gave RadarSync a try when it first came out and noticed a lot of the information it provided was either incorrect or outdated. The biggest 'woof' was when it recommended I update two apps with older versions. And the sad part was that it correctly identified the version of what I currently had on my machine. It also said three of my apps were up to date when I knew there were newer versions available.

I uninstalled RadarSync ten minutes later.

I've had the best luck using a combination of:

KC Softwares SUMo
http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?sumo

Secunia PSI
http://secunia.com/v...y_scanning/personal/

and DriverMax in tandem to stay on top of my updates. It's a bit of a pain using all three, but it's only a once a week to-do item - and, once I identify and download the updates I need, I'm all set to go on the rest of my machines.

A few thoughts:

Documentation is the least of their problems.

Not really. The biggest complaint leveled against FOSS revolves around the lack of decent, or (in many cases) any documentation. Go to any LUG, FOSS fest, or NIX bull session, and the one thing you'll hear over and over again is:
"Man! somebody's got to do something about these POS docs!" ;D

Linux is not well designed. Its a hodge podge of competing design philosophies with no coherent vision, no standardized API's on which other developers can build apps, and a new project starting every week which tries to fix the failed efforts of the previous ones. Note I am not talking of the kernel, which IS decent, but all the user level subsystems such as video, sound, the filesystem etc.

You're absolutely correct. It's what's referred to as incremental improvement; otherwise known as "Business as Usual."

Unfortunately, that's how virtually all complex technical development gets done. It's not the most efficient or safe way to work. The US Space Program spent it's first 25 years working that way, and got us to the moon. (It also brought us the Challenger disaster.) But once again, it was good enough.

And take a look the Internet. That is one of the biggest kludges the world has ever seen. But it's good enough for most people, so it gets used, and fixed (or otherwise improved) on a  daily basis. Just business as usual folks!

For your normal user, there is little reason not to run Windows. More apps, easier to use, faster or just as fast (KDE and Gnome are just as fat and bloated as Windows counterparts)

Once again, you are correct. For most people, 'good enough' is all they want or need. Windows is good enough. But so's Linux.

BTW: what exactly constitutes being a "normal" user?

and for most people, Windows will come for free.

As Dormouse has previously pointed out: It doesn't. It just comes included.

Somebody, somewhere, has paid something for every legal copy of Windows. Microsoft has not gotten to where they are today by giving away their products.

For developers, there's even less reason - Windows dev tools, docs and support are leagues apart.

There may be even less of a reason. But if that is true, how do you explain the number of people (including many world class programmers) that are actively involved in Linux development? Conservative studies put the number of people that have contributed to Linux and FOSS development at somewhere around 1.1 million. Rather interesting, don't you think?

So, maybe there's something more going on here?  8)
