Living Room / Re: OpenDNS - safer, faster and smarter DNS
« Last post by nosh on February 01, 2008, 02:47 AM »
Fair enough - AFAIK they're already doing that with typo-squatting. Hi-jacking Google completely?... I dunno  :-\
I still use them (though only as a backup) so can't really complain.

Since I'm an expert on the human anatomy (my browsing habits bear testament to this) I can tell you with full authority that that's nothing compared to the number of germs inside us.

Just in case I'm not the last one to find this out, OpenDNS has been jacking all Google searches since the last several months.

Pinging Google with Opendns servers active gets :
Pinging google.navigation.opendns.com [208.67.219.230] with 32 bytes of data:

They claim they're just trying to fix what Google+Dell's spyware has broken. :D

Can brett or anyone familiar with AHK tell me how to mod this to trigger a function (Summary Log, in my case) on single-clicking the tray icon?

General Software Discussion / Re: Personal Movie Organizers - A quick rundown
« Last post by nosh on January 29, 2008, 05:29 PM »
Since you've bumped the thread, I'd just like to say that Personal Video Database has been upgraded some time back and is even better than before. The biggest improvement made was to the search, which was already very strong.

I've got well over 400 movies entered into the database now (it was 100+ movies when I reviewed it) and the program is as responsive as ever. I found the Collectorz interface more polished & comprehensive but much slower in comparison when I tried their latest version (very briefly) a couple of weeks back - I'm referring to the movie edit box in particular which took ages to load.

I've also started using the People category in PVD (see screenshots), this is a feature most movie database programs lack. It doesn't have barcode scanning so that may be a deal breaker for some of you.

Screenshots:

The People section has three views just like the Movies section.
People Section: Grid view (narrowing down the people shown based on search criteria, in this case, a movie name. The columns are customizable.)
people grid view.jpg

People Section: Plain view (the search is still filtered on movie name, notice the web search box [top, right].  The websites are completely customizable, for instance Rotten Tomatoes has been added by me.)
people plain view.jpg

I use PVD almost daily and it has _never_ crashed on me. It's still far from being a 100% polished app but if barcode scanning is not a priority it's definitely worth a shot. I've been making a list of possible bugs & suggestions but haven't found the time to compile it all and get in touch with the author, hopefully soon.

General Software Discussion / Re: windows security - what's really necessary?
« Last post by nosh on January 29, 2008, 05:11 AM »
I don't see any harm in having a mix of security apps on your system, especially if you are paranoid by nature *raises hand* and doing so makes you comfortable.

The pitfalls?
1) The cost involved. There are lots of good freeware applications out there - anti-spyware, AV, firewalls.
2) And I think this is far more significant - the hit your system takes by running these apps - a smart choice of applications would definitely help. I have two AV apps, two anti-spyware apps, two rootkit scanners and a firewall sitting on my system. Sounds bad, but all of these have realtime monitoring disabled other than the firewall and one AV which only scans incoming mail and online activity. Total hit on resources - close to zero. I see absolutely no point in scanning the same old files a bazillion times. If I download something I suspect may be fishy the AV gets to scan it. The anti-spyware & anti-rootkit apps  are used _once_ in two months, just before I backup my system.

I could probably disable everything and still sit easy, thanks to drive imaging, which is the real hero here. But I don't see the point considering the only "real" hit is a few MB of disk space.''

Regarding outbound protection, I would hate not knowing some slimy app trying to call home. Besides, I'm a miser when it comes to my bandwidth, which is limited - I don't see why I should let any app send crashdumps, etc home unless I really want it to. Allowing malicious apps on your system is a grey area coz, a good example is an app written about recently on DC  by a well-intentioned person, hosted at a respectable site which tried to connect to a totally different domain known best for ripoff apps. What harm could it have done to let it connect, probably none. But I feel much better knowing about stuff like that. It's purely subjective, but in the end, that's what matters.

Here's an interesting/amusing read... someone who has a lot of contempt for software firewalls.

BTW, Jetico has done well in the leak test posted by Armando and also at another online test I saw... may be worth considering.

I'm stuck with Sygate 5.5  - Someone pointed out the latest version in this thread but it doesn't let me upgrade. Won't even do a clean uninstall... I can remove it manually and install another firewall but not Sygate... it's slightly frustrating coz my OCD is kicking in but it was heartening to hear what Lashiec had to say...

Gothi[c] told me a while ago in DC's IRC channel that he uses Sygate to firewall one of his computers. Being a server administrator, I guess his opinion is one not to be taken lightly.

Also things seem to be working fine and I have a few advanced rules and a home network that was a real pain to set up right so there are a lot of disincentives for trying something new.

The problem you are referring to above, does it relate to Threatfire or to PC Tools Desktop Firewall?

www.anvir.com

I'd tried their startup monitor a long time back and found it to be a resource hog, I _think_ this was on an older P3 machine so it may not be so bad now. Feature-wise I was quite impressed with it, it did the same job as Mike Lin's startup monitor but was a bit smarter (and a LOT slower.)

Darwin,
I was tempted to try it myself but I read somewhere it doesn't have checks for dll injection. You may want to look this up (I'm not sure if it's been rectified in the newer versions) before you make it a permanent fixture.

General Software Discussion / Anyone using Silverlight?
« Last post by nosh on January 27, 2008, 01:42 AM »
I tried the Beta last year and I distinctly remember unpleasant things occurring  :), can't remember the specifics though - I know for sure that there were freezes/crashes involved. I'm just updating + backing up my system right now and it showed up as an optional component at MS Updates. I'm not installing it before imaging the system but am curious - what's the general consensus on Silverlight? Also, your take on Adobe Air... Adobe tends to remind me more and more of $ymantec these days... Reader bloat, etc.

I've been integrating it a bit with Autohotkey, simple stuff like customizing views + applying filters depending on how I start it... lots of fun!

Also the per folder settings (desktop.ini) is amazingly useful, I've customized every important (and quite  few not so important) folders on my system. :-* This is something WinExplorer gave me nightmares over coz it never seemed to work the way it was intended(?) for me, my settings would invariably get fudged up.

This is trivial but I'll mention it anyway...

How about a way to acknowledge a regular post as read...

I'm often caught between saying something (when I have nothing to say) just to acknowledge a post or being silent and thereby possibly being perceived as rude...

Hi Martin,

I'm glad you're taking a combative stance, it tells me I got your attention.
As a serious blogger I hope you take your responsibilities more seriously in the future. The "I forgot" excuse doesn't cut much ice beyond the fourth grade (IIRC, it seldom worked for me back then either! ;D )

Good Luck,
Nosh.
