Nice stuff guys !
1102
yes, you're right mouser. It's a nice list electronixtar.
1103

Did you give farr some time ? most of your suggestions are already implemented in some ways.

[edit :  :) yes, it seems slightly impolite or defensive. Sorry about that.]

>1. Simplify settings & options UI like launchy. In fact users do not care what a path's  score is. So K.I.S.S ? LOL

There's already a beginner UI mode. I personally care about path score... Although the K.I.S.S. philopsophy is good at times, it's also good to be able to configure a software to your liking.

>2. Index registry "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths" so Launchy acts exactly as Win+R

farr already looks in all the right places so I wonder what positive change would that make. Could be interesting to implement... don,t know.

>3. Support indexing Google Bookmarks, Live bookmarks, Del.icio.us bookmarks

Did you look at the addons ? I don't use these , but Del.icio.us bookmarks are "supported"

>4. Support Opensearch like firefox do.(Something like Google Suggest)

There are already some plugins doing similar things.

>5. I strongly recommand "launchy"-like two-column UI design. On the left you type command, the right display program name, the middle display an icon. The advantage of this is, you can type 1+1 on the left while display 2 on the right. Another example: Left for word input right for spell check or dictionay? LOL.

I personally very much prefer farr's UI : you can see more info at once (creation date, path, etc.), not to mention, more results, if you wish. Much more precise. To browse directories, it's more convenient.

>6. Now the most intersting part, if user's input matches a file, and a icon appears, display Explorer menu when right click the icon.  :-)

This is already the case & more. Have you tried it?

>7. When a exact file/folder matches, support drag & drop operations compatible with Explorer. e.g. I type C:\Tools\Notepad.exe and then drag 1.txt from desktop to FARR so FARR launch 1.txt with notepad.exe :-)

Some of that can be achieved. But can't you just double click on your txt file ????

>8. Index IE, Firefox, Opera history URL's & Webpage title

Much of that can already be achieved through addons, and just plain configuration.

>9. Options for store settings in Registry, .ini in %APPDATA% and in FARR directory to make FARR "portable"

Settings are already strore in an ini file in farr's directory.  I don't know how portable it is though as I've never tried it on different machines.

>13. I strongly disagree using Ctrl+Space as the default FARR toggle hotkey cauz many CJK Windows use Ctrl+Space as default hotkey for IME switching

All hotkeys are customizable. IIRC Ctrl+space is the default toggle hotkey in many launchers (like Quicksilver).

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Timer
« Last post by Armando on May 26, 2008, 10:32 AM »
czechboy : I see that all times options are related to a specific date and clock time, so if one wants to reuse the "in" type of timers (count down), it's not very convenient. It would be cool if "in" was not bound to a specific clock time.

Seems like this plugin/addon is not on the farr addon page. Maybe it should be added...?

Find And Run Robot / Re: LifeHacker vote, stage 2, final voting
« Last post by Armando on May 22, 2008, 11:07 PM »
all these "best ....." polls are inappropriate. Like I said in my "unposted" comment there (at LH), the polls should be renamed and called : "most popular ....", and the  question should be : "what is your favorite .....".  That 3% only shows that farr could reach more people than it does right now. How? I don't know...  Maybe with more eye candy. It's definitely got potential for reaching a wider audience. IMO, it's not that hard to use!!! My feeling is that the article will give farr more visibility.

Just finished eating and took a  few minutes to post my own comment on lifehacker. Wonder if it's going to pass the, ahem, quality control filter...  ;)

Grrrrr... I really wonder why the heck all these other launchers get so many votes. It shouldn't be called "best application launchers", but "favorite application launchers"... this pole is not about being the best in class, but just about preference and appearance.

I've never seen a really objective and careful side by side comparison of any of these apps. No doubt, if one day a real comparison was done, things would appear differently.

You need to be convinced that the readings are true too ...

My system runs incredibly hot - but then the sensors all read very hot within seconds of switching on. My two GPUs (for example) currently read 62C and 80C

These are normal temperatures for these cards and have been ever since they were new. There is loads of air circulating in my system so it isn't a problem of ventilation. I figure the sensors are crap or the nVidia software does a bad job reading it. My system is currently on 24/7 and the temps record as stable at those temperatures and I get the same values as soon as I am able to open the nVidia panel in Windows.

To start with I was worried but now I just live with it - they have been doing it for over a year now so it can't be too bad!

I think I'm going to relax too for now... Although cleaning the fans could be an option.
AFAICT the temperatures have been pretty much always the same since I bought my laptop almost 2 years ago. So... Unless Dell sold me an Inspiron with dusty fans...

GPU now reads 67C and i8kfanGUI tells me that it went up to 73C since last reboot...  :onfire:

ERrrrrrr... Don't want to hijack that thread but... my laptop's GPU is often between 60-65º C. Should I be worried ?

General Software Discussion / Re: Mikogo: share screen or access remote PC
« Last post by Armando on May 20, 2008, 03:31 PM »
Yes, Mikogo actually seems like it would be good for my own personal use... I'll check it out when I have the time. Thanks!
1117
Don't want to hijack the thread... but do you use the locate plug in (i think I read somewhere that you're using it....) ? That should accelerate document searching. I use farr for document searching a lot, and it's fast. (I admit using locate directly most of the time though, or even X1)

So... yes, there's room for improvement in the search/indexing area. The most obvious problems I have right now are with French diacritical (accents) and the locate plugin not showing all results, for some mysterious reasons.
1118
farr is far ahead of any other tool I am using, it is a fact. It would use some optimization for more speed thou :)

really ? what's slow in your experience ?

Mikogo is a dream come true.  I got my mother in law's laptop fixed up from 2500 miles away, and now she (finally) thinks I'm not just good-looking, but smart too!

 ;D

Mikogo seems really nice.

I finally opted for logMeIn though -- my mother and father virtually have nothing to do, except from running the little LogMeIn applet. But I had no real reasons for choosing it over Mikogo as I hadn't tried it!! LogMeIn just worked so I thought... I might as well keep it...

Just bought it.

What a great firewall. Seriously.

It is very easy to make Firefox jump to half a giga, in fact when I read your post my Firefox was taking up 520 MB. But I use to minimize it once in a while, just long enough for it to free some memory, because in general I think it uses exactly the same as the others.

Homepage + this thread, only:
 (see attachment in previous post)

Are you looking at virtual size ?  Because from what I see, commit charge is lower for maxthon. Albeit not THAT much for maxthon 2 -- still, lower.
1122
o_O, but they are only two tabs!

what do you mean ?  :)
1123
Hey guys, I left maxthon for firefox, but I'm considering to go back to maxthon. Firefox's ram usage is absurd in my opinion; almost always more than 200mb, sometime between 400-500mb -- I understand the performance implications-issues etc, but this more ram than what win XP uses right after booting!!! I don't know if it's the case with firefox v3 though.

What about maxthon 2 ? How's ram usage ?

But isn't its main purpose to search as you type ? Grouping/sorting would be nice, maybe. But then, grouping/sorting would be nice for anything farr related IMO... (clicking on the headings to sort by date, name, etc.)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New C# FARR Plugin: FARRAltTab
« Last post by Armando on May 17, 2008, 05:22 PM »
Well windows alt-tab is good when you don't have many windows and have to switch back and forth between 2 windows -- it's probably the quickest way. However, when you have multiple windows of the same app (e.g. : text editor, word processor with multiple documents/scripts/code opened all at once) it's close to useless. Farr alt tab becomes handy there. Like you, I have created a separate hotkey (ctrl alt tab) for it (with "tab" enabled by default). I actually use 4 ways of switching between apps, depending on my needs : plain alt tab, TaskSwitcher, farr alt tab, and... the task bar (once in a while).
