(yes I know opera can do this too, no need to repeat it; we are talking about how great flock is though)

And this is how I search in flock

  • First, I go to a website that offers search capabilities:
    search_1.png

  • Then, I right-click into the search field and select "Add a keyword for this Search":
    search_2.png

  • Now I have to fill in the name of the bookmark and the keyword of course:
    search_3.png

That's basically it! You can now search using "dc" as keyword.  :D

I will show you an example below.

  • Into the location bar I type the keyword followed by the search terms:
    search_4.png

  • After pressing enter, I see the results:
    search_5.png

I find this extremely useful and already have added a dozen or so "search engines" this way.

1104
what would the "multiple user installations" be used for? should each user be able to maintain their site? For example housetier.dcmembers.com would use a certain theme and feature set and carolh.dcmembers.com could look completely different and would provide other features, but both "installations" will use the same backend?

This is possible with drupal, although I have not done this myself. The "sites" directory certainly hints at this feature.

Behold! Here Cometh The List:
The definitions of "natural" and "nuclear" are much longer than those of the other terms. That means they are much more important.

Some of us struggle everyday to do the things you take for granted.  :(
Some of us are having our dreams crushed by something others find simple to understand.

I am special as well, but I laugh about it. I chose not to be sad about my disabilities, as I have seen that everybody has quirks and oddities, and nobody is the same; so that makes us all equal.

I crack jokes about ethnic minorities, handicapped, "challenged", geeks, nerds, men, women, kids, animals, foreigners, fellow Germans, my family, my friends, and myself. I try to treat everybody the same. If you want to stick out, that's fine, but I wont give you special treatment because I dont think you are that special anyway.

The flock guys have also put up a tour. Or, if you are interested in particular features without going through the flash-powered tour:

Search:http://flock.com/tour/search

That photo stuff is explained with flash.

What, MORE Math?

Why of course! Mathematics is a wide field, it has so many branches and differentiations, you don't live long enough to learn it all.

Ok now I am scared!

Don't be! Math can be interesting, sometimes even fun. And once you figure out how the stock exchange REALLY works, it will be worth it (if you'll excuse my pun). Go watch the movie "Pi".

numberspiral.com-3.gif

Now, to some non-scary math: Numberspiral.com plays with numbers on a spiral. Robert Sacks then steps back to take a different look at this spiral, then zooms in again on various details.
numberspiral.com-24.gif

Then come explainations in normal and math-speak. If you take it step by step I think you will be follow him.

Wow I am so impressed!

It is impressive, and pretty with all the diagrams. But I think some of it is just coincidence. With so many numbers involved it is easy to find "rules" and "regularity". However, this is just my opinion. Please do enjoy math!

And: Spirals are dang fascinating I must admit. This circularity thing keeps my brains spinning around and round (if you would excuse another poor play with words).

Note

I STOLE the pictures from Number Spiral. They belong to Robert Sacks or whomever.

Site/Forum Features / BB Codes documentation
« Last post by housetier on August 09, 2006, 06:02 PM »
What is BB Codes?

With BB Codes we mean those things that make your posts look fancy. For example, we have bold, italics, underline, strikethrough; and many more. Basically everything with [brackets] is a so called BB code.

They are very similar to <html>-tags.

Isn't it totally obvious?

The experienced forum user will find these blatantly obvious to use. In fact, they are used in many many forums all over the internet. Despite their popularity, some users might not know how to use them, or how to make more use of them.

I often find myself in a situation where I am looking for a certain feature, but don't know which [bbcode] to use, or how to use one of theses [tags]. Usually I go to the Simplemachines website and search their documentation.

Ok, what's with the documentation now?

Very often I end up at this list of Basic BB Codes, so I figured they might be useful to you as well.

There is also documentation of Advanced BB Codes here, but I am not sure if they can be used here at donationcoder.com.

What are you favorite [bbcodes]?

  • [url]for URLs[/url]; the web is all about hyperlinking
  • [b]for bold[/b]; we do have important things to say, no?
  • [attachthumb=1] to inline a thumbnail of an attached image; VERY useful for reviews with screenshots
  • [quote]for quotations[/quote]
  • [spoiler]buttons hide&show[/spoiler], use your imagination and do fun stuff with this one
Those are the ones I use most. Oh, and don't forget about the smilies: ;D :) :D :-* :P make these smilies: ;D :) :D :-* :P

Why do I care?

I hope this will help you write better posts. "Better" as in "looking like you wanted it to look".  :P

Mini-Reviews by Members / flock: how to add feeds
« Last post by housetier on August 09, 2006, 11:15 AM »
As mentioned above, I like how they integrated the feed reader into flock. So here I will explain how to add a feed to the inegrated feed reader, in 6 steps.

  • Step 0: Browse a site:
    flock-0_browse-site.png
  • Step 1: Discover the feed:
    flock-1_discover-feed.png
  • Step 2: Click the icon, then the "popup" to add the feed:
    flock-2_add-feed.png
  • Step 3: Preview the feed:
    flock-3_preview-feed.png
  • Step 4: Drag and Drop the feed to your feedlist:

  • Step 5: Read the feed:

Living Room / Damn Interesting: Natural Nuclear Reactor
« Last post by housetier on August 09, 2006, 09:45 AM »
I read the feed from Damn Interesting and yesterday saw this post about natural nuclear reactors. It is a classic article, which means it's not a brand-new discovery.

oklo.jpg

I had heard about this phenomenon before so I was intrigued.  I mean, the reactor must have been extremely old, yet
the uranium isotope levels had an uncanny resemblance to those in spent nuclear fuel from modern nuclear power plants. The evidence was strong enough to suggest a natural reactor, and further exploration confirmed it.

The article goes on to explain how this reactor regulated itself.

Note: I boldy took the pictures from the article and uploaded them here to save them some bandwidth.

« Last post by housetier on August 09, 2006, 08:11 AM »
In school I learned programming with Turbo Pasal. I was very productive with it but never really got the hang of object orientation in Turbo *.

Their IDEs were state of the art imho, very clean interface without nick-nacks. I don't know the state of their current IDEs but if they come close to Together (which they acquired some time ago) they must be supertop.

Anyway, I will watch with mild curiosity what's gonna happen to Turbo...

Intro:

Flock is a webbrowser like Firefox, but it has some nifty extra features.
Flock is a free web browser that makes it easier than ever to share photos, stay up-to-date with news from your favorite sites, and search the Web.
It integrates nicely with flickr and photobucket, has support for many blog engines. There is more, but I have yet to discover everything.

Who is this app designed for:

It is for websurfers who want a nice integration with all the Web2.0 buzz. You can share your bookmarks, your photos and whatnot; all from within the browser. You can manage your flickr and photobucket photos with flock, you can post to your favorite blog with flock.

Maybe you can even annotate websites and share these notes with your friends (who would need to use flock as well).

It's for all the taggers out there ;-) I love tagging stuff, it just makes sense to me.

The Good

It works! I hasn't crashed on me yet. You can do a lot of things via drag and drop, which comes "natural" to me. When you need to sign up for services (del.icio.us or photobucket for example) you can do that from within the settings dialog and flock will know once you have successfully signed up. That way, your workflow is not interrupted.

All the new buzz is easily accessiable from the navigation bar: flock-buttons.png
From left to right we have Forward/Backward, Reload, Create Blog Post, Photobar, Read Newsfeeds, Bookmark&Tag current page

The needs improvement section

On the screenshots you will notice that you can barely read some of the buttons or tabs. This is because my system theme uses light grey as textcolor and flock then sets its own background color but uses the system text color. This issue is being addressed and I hope it will be resolved soon.

When assigning categories/tags to a blog post (see below), you can only select from existing categories. The second field lets you input arbitrary tags, but these will be included in the post as technorati tags. When I use the web interface of my site to blog, I can choose any tag I want, existing or not (I think this is called freetagging); so this is where the blog thing of flock lacks a feature I really would like to have.

Why I think you should use this product

Flock makes it easy to blog about stuff you find.
  • On the website you want to blog about, select a piece of text that you want to quote:
    blog-step1_browse_select.png

  • Right-click on the selection and choose "blog this" or whatever flock displays in your locale:
    blog-step2_right_click.png

  • Here you see me editing the source because I want to use textile input format rather than plain ol' HTML. Note how flock correctly encodes "&" in an URL with "&amp;":
    blog-step3_write.png

  • Before publishing the post, flock lets you select categories or tags for your post:
    blog-step4_assign_tags.png

  • After publishing, you can read your newly created blog post. Note that all selected categories/tags have been applied:
    blog-step5_read.png

Flock also makes it easy to upload images, at leat to two of the popular free image hosting services.
  • Click on the photobar button:
    photo-step1_photobar_button.png

  • Collect your images by drag&dropping them into the droparea of that dialog window. You can drag many pictures at the same time. Also you can crop each image, as can be seen here:
    photo-step2_collect_tag.png

  • Uploading to an album (can be created on-the-fly) is easy:
    photo-step3_upload.png

  • Once all the images have been uploaded to the chosen image hosting service, the photobar is updated again:
    photo-step4_photobar_updated.png

Flock also has the best integrated RSS-feed reader I have seen so far.
  • This is how my list of feeds looks, quite similar to what I am used to from liferea:
    flock-newsfeeds-2.png

  • Over here we have a preview of a news item, complete with image:
    flock-newsfeeds-preview.png

How does it compare to similar apps

Browsing-wise it is almost identical to firefox. And as for the other features, well, I don't know any similar application.

Conclusions

This gave you a short and bumpy introduction into flock and how I use it. I will continue to use flock, because the most important firefox extension works with flock.

There is still more to explore in flock. I will try to update this when I have discovered post-worthy things. I am now on the third day into my flock quest, and I still love flock! This tells you they must have done something right; otherwise I wouldn't use it for more than a few hours.

Please ask questions! I will try my best to answer them.

Living Room / my submission is this
« Last post by housetier on August 07, 2006, 07:59 AM »
url: http://nrrd.de/dasbuch/, which happens to be my site ;)

category: writing books
language: mostly German, then English; other languages are more than welcome
popups: none
spyware: none
family-friendly: yes, absolutely

description:
I want to build a community site where people write their books, or work together to write a book. So far I have two books and three active users. The books are far from being complete yet, but you can read them already as they are written in public. It is a supersmall community at the moment, I hope to see it grow. I really like the slogan we came up with: "Wer mitmacht, hat Recht!" which losely translates to "Participate, and be right!".

This is nothing new, but Das Buch has always been hadez' and my "baby" so to say. We put our hearts into making this site work. Blogging is also included, but that's more for buzzword compatibility. The focus of the site lies on writing books and getting them published eventuall. I chose this very open approach to get feedback as early as possible to improve the quality of a book before it goes to print.

Yes this is an attempt to get more visitors on my site!

I won't be too disappointed if my site is not included on said list, but I'll be glad if it is.

Where?

I stumbled upon this, but you can go there directly. The site is right hurr.

What?

Many many globes showing different things.

Hä?

Well, you will see many different pictures of globes. The globes show different things; some represent statistical data, others show ocean currents.

Why?

I think it is quite interesting to look at the world like this. Also it is a fascinating way to show data. Thinking in a global context, so to say. But please see for yourself!
