gDoc Fusion hardly rolls off the tongue, does it?! Lacks the cachet of Jaws PDF to my mind. I wonder why they've done this?

General Software Discussion / Re: eBook Reader alternate to Acrobat?
« Last post by Darwin on May 24, 2009, 09:37 AM »
Siouxdax, If you've already got Adobe Acrobat Pro installed, look no further than Adobe Reader Speedup (NB this DOES work with both the Reader and the full Acrobat package, despite the title). I used this with Adobe Acrobat Pro 5 and with Reader versions 6 through 9 and it makes a HUGE difference.

Highly recommended

We had a discount here on SFFS at one point (that's how I picked up my licence). Even at full price, though, I'd consider it money well spent. It replaced Genie Backup Manager Pro 8 on my system.

Living Room / Re: What annoys you to no end?

People who use big words, or words that are very uncommon, to attempt to show their intelligence, education level, or just sound smart. This annoys me because 9 times out of 10 the words are not necessary. Yes, you may be a very educated person, but you do not need to attempt to prove it every time you talk, post, or express yourself.

I sympathize with this to a degree. However, once a word enters your vocabulary, it becomes PART of your vocabulary (and therefore come naturally in conversation/writing) and 1. it'd be a shame not to use it! and 2. sometimes high falutin' words just get the idea across more efficiently and accurately. Thus, I don't think that ALL big words are used because posters are attempting to show off - maybe using the big word just feels natural to them and conveys their thoughts most accurately?

What, statistics? Forget it!

 ;D

Lies, damned lies, and statistics, eh?!

Seriously, I follow what you're saying - and take some comfort in it  :)

Well... I don't begrudge them, exactly - I just worry a bit. May be I should worry about more immediate things, though, like figuring out how to use a graphing calculator myself  ;D Seriously, though, my issue is that I never really learned stats - properly - and have always used SPSS or SAS to crunch my data. I've always suspected that I'd have a greater "handle" on things if I'd just learned to do it with a pencil and some paper... Like I said, I'm just getting old and crotchety, I guess!

Oops... Klonix = Klixon  :o :-[ Anyway, my experience in school was similar to yours, Jim (minus the nuns and corporal punishment - they banned the strap here while I was in kindergarten): we weren't allowed to use calculators until grade 9. We had to master finding square and cube roots on paper first. I find it scary that kids today are ENCOURAGED to use a graphing calculator in calculus and physics classes in high school. Granted, they're not allowed to use them on exams, but why encourage them in the first place? If you don't understand what you are doing and why, what value is there in arriving at the correct answer quickly? I'm getting old...

I'm late to the party - congratulations on your licence for Infix, Curt  - but just wanted to note that Serif PagePlus has always been first and foremost a desktop publishing app. The placement of pdf in the programme name refers to its ability to IMPORT pdfs so that some or all of its content can be included in a project and to SAVE/EXPORT projects in pdf format. It's in no way meant as a pdf editor...

PS the Klonix keyboard is hilarious - it sounds like there are lots of screws loose inside the calculator, but it's just each individual key...

Hey Jim - I just picked up a Bowmar 90515 sans power pack. I opened it up, removed the INCREDIBLY corroded original Radio Shack rechargeable powerpack - 3 AA Ni-Cads soldered together - and hacked together a replacement powerpack using alkaline AA's and the thing works!

Kind of cool... I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a power pack. Once I have that I'll build my own Ni-Cad battery pack and it'll be good to go  :)

Hi Kartal,

Archivarius' developer has struck me as being very decent, from my interactions with him  :)

I've had excellent experiences contacting Archivarius' author by e-mail. He doesn't necessarily implement suggestions, but he considers them carefully and offers alternatives.

You get - I would estimate - at least 4 (and probably more) updates a year. With Archivarius, that is...

mwb1100 is correct. When I posted the link I hadn't tried out the beta, so I wasn't aware that there isn't yet an actual dual-pane option implemented as yet. However, Don has inidicated that he hopes to get a dual-pane release out this month.

BTW DP = dual pane :D

In general, I agree with you, fenix! It's just that as I read the XYPlorer at least two or three times a day, it is more convenient for me to have the latest posts in that thread appear at the top of the page when I open it, rather than having to scroll down to the bottom of the page.
1118
BTW Do you really find it better to read newest posts first?
-fenixproductions (May 14, 2009, 07:35 PM)

I have the page setup that way because I monitor beta development via a bookmark in FF, which I check two or three times a day. This way, when I open the page I get the latest post at the top when the page opens. Dunno... works for me (bland way of saying that it is what I am used to)!

I have been an happy Xyplorer customer, but I can entertain a good dualpaner as well.

A dual-pane version of XYplorer is in beta as I write this... http://www.xyplorer....amp;start=0&sd=d

I would recommend Vista to friends if they have at least 4 GB RAM, and to enemies if they have 2 GB RAM or less.

No, sgtevmckay, while i feel that our generation is raising the next to have this sense of entitlement, I don't *think* that we necessarily share it. Turned 40 myelf a month and a half ago...  :o

Well... I just spoke to a high school teacher friend and the endless rewrites/chances issue here (in British Columbia) is PROVINCIALLY LEGISLATED. WFT?!

Bring on the mediocrity  >:(

This type of self-entitlement appears to be endemic in other areas of life such as education.  The students seem to think they are entitled to good grades for showing up to class and handing in their assignments on time.  http://www.nytimes.c.../18college.html?_r=1

In my experience, that totally "wouldn't" be because every single one of my high school teachers thus far has said "If you show up in class and turn in [most of] your work, you will pass" or "As long as you show up and turn in your work, you're almost sure to pass" or "As long as you don't sleep, and you turn in your homework and pass the tests with Cs or better, you will pass"...

That isn't an assumption at my high school - it is told to us as fact. Naturally you're going to carry that with you to college/university because you have been told by a certified person, with a degree (!), that you can pass by sitting in your chair and doing the majority of your work.
-wreckedcarzz (May 04, 2009, 10:30 PM)

Brandon, I think what you're teachers are saying is that if you show up for class, pay attention, and complete the assignments and exams you'll pass, correct? I don't see how this causes a sense of academic/intellectual entitlement. It's a very obvious statement - pay attention and do the work. Simple. Your teachers are merely telling you what they require for you to pass the course. Or is it that your peers filter out the work angle and focus on the warm body in a chair aspect? At any rate, and regardless of the answer to that question, what seems to be being missed - at least up here on the wet coast (and it is VERY wet this week) - is the deadline/responsibility part of the equation: tradiationally, one of the requirements for passing a course/graduating from high school in general has been that young adults learn to work under pressure and to complete tasks to a deadline. Failure to learn teach this lesson is going to cost us all. Big time.

As a former college instructor, I couldn't agree more... Really, the perception seems to be that merely getting assignments in and writing exams before the end of the school year is all that should be required in order to achieve a good grade. This stems, I think, from what seems to be common in local high schools - endless rewrites of quizzes and exams and the acceptance of assignments up to the end of semester/term. Not a very realistic preparation for the real world and definitely not a good prep for university (unless it's changed since I was a student...)!

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Darwin on May 03, 2009, 06:11 PM »
You're a very unusual person, Darwin.

Heh, heh... So I've been told!

I own a licence for PowerDesk 7 (and 6, for that matter) but don't have it (either) installed anymore. DOpus is all I use day to day. I have purchased licenses for almost all the major file managers available - TC, XYPlorer, explorer2, FileBoss, FileQest, Altap Salamander, Frigate 3, etc. but have only DOpus installed on my harddrive with XYPlorer and TC installed on my thumbdrives (along with DOpus!). I have had TC installed and tweaked to perfection and love it. Howver, DOpus is no like a well worn pair of shoes - so comfortable and familar   :)
