I'd be just like jgpaiva, so to mention a couple I'm really fond of; Soul Luna Remix, Reluna and XPMC.

You use Eclipse for C++ too. Though I don't do so myself, I find it just too heavy.

In fact with C++ I tend do use a very basic editor. I'm not a maschocist or anything, I love intellisense and the like. But even in MS's latest intellisense dose not work 100% of the time for C++ and I find a half working feature to be too distracting so I do without entirely. I guess with templates and such C++ is possibly too complicated.

General Software Discussion / Re: Can I uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 ??
« Last post by Eóin on August 02, 2007, 06:18 PM »
As I understand it you need to keep v1.1 because there were breaking changes moving onto 2.0. Apparently 3.0 just adds additional functions to 2.0. So at it's core you are still re-using the 2.0 framework which probably explains why you saw 2.0 mentioned. I'll just quote where I'm getting this info-

The .NET Framework 3.0 adds new technologies to the .NET Framework 2.0, which makes the .NET Framework 3.0 a superset of the .NET Framework 2.0. You can think of .NET Framework 3.0 as an "additive" release to the .NET Framework 2.0, as contrasted with a generational release where software is revised across the board. (For example, the .NET Framework 2.0 was a generational release over the .NET Framework 1.0.)

Because .NET Framework 3.0 is an additive release and uses the core run-time components from .NET Framework 2.0, it is completely backward compatible with the earlier version. Your existing .NET Framework 2.0 based-applications will continue to run without any modifications and you can safely continue your investments using the technologies that shipped with .NET Framework 2.0.

In the end I'd guess the safe bet is to keep them all.

Josh you are right of course. I was just pointing out that numerous programs don't actually listen to that installer option. Once installed they default to their own 'per-user' or 'all users' setting regardless of what you selected when installing.

I think the 'all users' option in a lot of cases just means the shortcuts go into the 'all users' startmenu and other installation related things.

I read this, Crushed by the Wheels of Industry, blog from Jeremy Allison recently. We all know Microsoft wants us to get locked into their products but here is an example of a very extreme approach they have taken.

Best E-mail Client / Re: Best IMAP Client
« Last post by Eóin on July 12, 2007, 06:36 PM »
I've searched high and low for a good imap client and keep coming back to Thunderbird even though I have an irrational dislike of it. Mulberry is ugly under XP, but things seem to be improving so it'll be worth keeping an eye on. For the moment I'll have to stick with Thunderbird.

That is a very interesting article. Another article on the same site gives a sneak peek at C++0x. It is worth a read as there are plans (it would seem) to introduce an auto keyword for type deduction.

How long it will take for us to have compilers which support this is a whole other issue, the standard itself isn't finished yet.

Yeah my guess is swallowing the mentos without chewing is the key. I'd bet about a litre of coke followed by one or two mentos swallowed whole would work, but I ain't going to try, not sober at least ;)

Ok that is just one of the best pranks I've seen in a long time. I gotta find someone to play it on. Unfortunately I'm the Coke addict among my friends, in fact if any of them see this I'll be the guaranteed target :o

By the way I've heard it works with any carbonated drink and that diet coke is preferred over regular mainly only because without the high sugar content it's much easier to clean up afterwards. There are supposedly videos on youtube of people trying to repeat the effect internally but none seem to have the common sense to actually attempt it in a way which might have worked.

I'm with ak_, am very interested by these new Linux phones. The TrollTech Greenphone looks like the most viable at the moment

The Openmoko project is one to keep an eye on too. But I'll be holding off until the technology matures a bit, my current Nokia should tide me till then.

It could be a service running either. Msconfig has a nice feature in it's services tab where you can hide the MS ones which would be unlikely to be causing this problem anyway. A screenshot of that list would be helpful too.

A useful thing to note though is that msconfig isn't the best for managing services, a better bet if you want to fiddle with them yourself is after having gotten the list of non-ms ones fire up Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services and tweak them there. Or get Sysinternals Autoruns.

I'd highly recommend everyone learning why those gems work. It would teach you a lot about how computers represent numbers and that could lead you to understand when and where those trick are really applicable.

Living Room / Re: DMZ Linux Cursors For Windows
« Last post by Eóin on June 23, 2007, 04:13 PM »
The licensing brings up an interesting issue, I can remember back when I found the earlier set I posted that the person who put together the package said he only thinks the icons were under GPL but wasn't sure.

Perhaps Gothic knows the actual license, if not I would probably suggest stating license unknown or something would be a more correct thing to do than assume the GPL.

A suggestion, of the non-critical kind :) there are slightly different versions of these icons floating around. I've attached the ones I use as I'm not sure of the original source. I think the animations in these is crisper. They could perhaps be bundled as a third collection.

So good software, but just not for me :)

I possibly posted a screenshot of this before but it's nice to show it again it properly. I simply use the Quick Launch toolbar organised into folders.

QuickLaunch1.png

It's nice because you can have it expand Drives or say the Control Panel as menus.

My only wish it to some day be able to add the Quick Launch toolbar to right-click context menus. Have seen no easy way of doing so yet.

I'm a watch fan myself, I would consider my watch to be the only peice of jewellery I wear. Mine at the moment is a Seiko Kinetic Auto Relay-

But if the name of the game is complicated you need look no further than TokyoFlash.

I was always a CamelCase fan, but recently I'm being converted over to lower case with '_' separators as that is what C++ libraries tend to use. I guess I just go with the flow :P

It seems like the humble underscore '_' is the only portable way of putting name separators in files. Which is a pity because it's not as nice, aesthetically, as CamelCase, period '.', hyphen '-' or a good old space. At least not to my eyes.
