General Software Discussion / Re: imaging & partitioning queries
« Last post by urlwolf on August 19, 2007, 07:27 AM »
Tomos,
Can you post any links on the _advantages_ (speed?) of having the pagefile on a different partition?
Actually, now that I have a laptops with two 160Gb HDs (Yay!), I may think carefully about how  to place things so I get the best reading speed possible.

Right now, I have:
disk 1:
C: -OS- 40gb.
G:(should be E: for compatibility with my older laptop) data: 109gb

disk 2:
D: music 148Gb

Of course, data will be accessed more often than music. Maybe I should place that partition at the beginning of disk 2.

Any other recommendations? Should I create a  pagefile partition on disk 2?

Thanks

I mean data as in docs/files etc. I'm checking those links... Thanks!

advantages:
(1) if you use FirstDefense, then your OS partition is tiny. (about 10 GB), so it's fast to upgrade the image.
(2) if you want to do a fresh reinstall of the OS, your data will be there, no need to copy them again
(3) it's just clearer to see how much space you allocate to each thing (programs/data)

I'm sure there are more...

BTW, thanks to all who answered. I reinstalled and now have a C: partition. My data partition used to be E: (and all my ahk scripts, etc assume E:). However, in my new install, E: is nowhere to be found (!). No partition/CD etc, has the E label, but still not available in the dropdown list. Anyone knows how to bring it back?

HI Ath,

actually, avoiding RSI is not the point of this program as much as avoiding distraction :)

I have used workrave in the past; I stopped because it's pretty obstrussive.
Thanks anyway!

I forgot. To get my XP cd to actually see the HDs, I had to disable sata in the BIOS. Am I going to have worse performance? Should I set SATA back on in the BIOS once all is said and done and windows runs fine?

THanks!

Hi,

After sacrificing a goat, I have a working installation of win XP on my new laptop (ex vista).
I like to have an OS partition, and a data partition. I created these with one of the partitioning programs that come in the Siren boot CD.
Now, for some reason, XP has intalled itself in the smaller partition (correct) but it's named E: (!).

Since many programs default to install in C:\program files, I'd like my OS partition to be C:. However, Partition Magic warns me that if change the boot partition label, the OS may not even boot.

What to do? Do you have any idea how to go from here?

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / how do you write a .chm file?
« Last post by urlwolf on August 17, 2007, 01:38 PM »
I'm toying around with an idea for a program. It's mostly ready for public beta consumption, but I need to write a help file. Now, how do you write a .chm file? I guess it's just html but how do you compile it into .chm?

Thanks!

Thanks Justice!

After reading around for a few hours, I'd your friend is probably right!

Here is a guy who has gone all the distance and made a tutorial on what to install. It's a bit of a pain, sice you need to create an special XP cd with the SATA drivers on:

http://forum.noteboo...ht=XP+reinstall+SATA

Here is a detailed description of every step:
http://forum.noteboo...owthread.php?t=88032

Here is a good link overall for laptop optimization:
http://forum.noteboo...howthread.php?t=5787

I'm going to play it safe; will try to find a dell OEM recent XP cd; hopefully the SATA drivers will be there. If that doesn't work, I'll try the ceremony described in the first link...

Thanks for all your efforts!

I don't think so... no, no RAID.
They are SATA, I read here:
http://forum.noteboo...ta+bios+XP+reinstall

That one may need to disable SATA in the BIOS before XP can see the HD. I did that, but didn't help.

I'm getting to the end of my resources. Dell won't help, I know them too well as I have spent more than 10 hrs on the phone with them. Their current level of cuelessness is astonishing.

well, I wish.
I haven't found any that work as well. There's a free one that does ok, but intellicomplete is better.

BTW, reinstalling XP is HELL. Vista did something to my system... the XP cds says there are no HDs (!). This is a dell inspiron 1720 with 2 HDs. I have tried everything in the book: alternate any HD in any slot, tried both. No luck.

THen I used Hiren's boot CD (best collection of boot/partition tools ever). None seemed to work!

Any ideas? Anyone went back from vista to XP? How did it go?

BTW: I'll never buy a dell again. Their support is criminal.

Thanks, I'll try that.
I'm running with the default user (just installed it) so it must be an user with sysadmin privs. It does work on oneNote, so that kind of rules out the explanation of not having enough privileges. I'm typing this from my older trusty laptop.

Hey guys,

is any of you running intellicomplete and vista?
I got a new laptop, with vista. Now, intellicomplete is probably the most useful piece of software I use, (discontinued!). It's really sketchy even on XP, so in vista, unsurprisingly, it doesn't work very well. I only got it to work with oneNote. No word, opera. That's really bad news. Works fine on XP.

So I'm considering reverting to XP just because of this!

I'm running IntelliComplete Professional 3.3 Released, April 15, 2004 (doh !!!).

If anyone has a trick to make it work under vista, please speak up. If not, back to XP I go.
Thanks

TC can be run off an USB drive too.
1117
If I could justify writing a post on it, I'll convince a bunch of people to move from Dopus to TC. BUt I can't right now, sorry...
1118

For me, the perfect world would be windows + linux in something like parallels, so that i could take the best of both worlds.

You have VMware et al.
I guess you could run windows and a linux installation on a virtual machine; correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't parallels just a virtual machine?
1119
Nice review Mitz!

somebody needs to do a review of TC.
I just got it, so I'm not ready. But I did move from dopus to TC, and I think TC is king!

opera

onenote

of course, Total commander is always open, but doesn't get used that much in terms of time with windows on focus.

Vim gets outbursts when I'm programming.

Thanks Darwin.
Well, it looks like it installs a whole bunch of small buttons. Can you get rid of those and just use the tabs? I'm a bit scared of it hosing my pristine word 2007 install...

Sorry to hear that. I'd say that getting green light for an operation is good news. I hope one day you remember your pain as a thing of the past.

Isn't DC great? I wonder which communities are tighter... (real life ones or virtual?)

why oh why none of the reviewed word processors offers tabs?
Is it that difficult to do? All text editors have'em...

Please post here if you know a way to get tabs with any word processor...

Tried that on my dell. Didn't let me do partitions.
BTW, vista has its own partition manager. google for it.
