Thanks for posting that link. I didn't see it because I've ignored that thread because I rarely find its contents "interesting" to me. :-[

The page is somewhat confusing regarding SoundForge.. it says it at the top but then doesn't seem to list it.. Thoughts?

Strange! After reading your message I went to check for it and I didn't see it either. :tellme:

Then I scrolled back to the top and looked through the page again more closely and spotted it in the center of the bottom section.

Manual update tells me I'm on the latest version of Vivaldi (2.3.1440.60), where Help -> About tells me it's using Chrome/72.0.3626.122.
1104
For Vivaldi you can do: vivaldi://settings/help

The latest version of Vivaldi which uses Chromium for me shows: 72.0.3626.122

Then it sounds like Vivaldi has been patched.

the version you want is 72.0.3626.121 [or newer], released at the start of March 2019.

Details are scarce as it seems Google is withholding information until more people have had a chance to update to a version of Chrome which doesn't have the vulnerability. This is the most specific information I found:

According to the official release notes, this vulnerability involves a memory mismanagement bug in a part of Chrome called FileReader.

That’s a programming tool that makes it easy for web developers to pop up menus and dialogs asking you to choose from a list of local files, for example when you want to pick a file to upload or an attachment to add to your webmail.

When we heard that the vulnerability was connected to FileReader, we assumed that the bug would involve reading from files you weren’t supposed to.

Ironically, however, it looks as though attackers can take much more general control, allowing them to pull off what’s called Remote Code Execution, or RCE.

RCE almost always means a crooks can implant malware without any warnings, dialogs or popups.

Just tricking you into looking at a booby-trapped web page might be enough for crooks to take over your computer remotely.

I'm curious if this affects all Chromium-based browsers. :-\

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: [FREE] Packt Book of the Day

I've kind of stopped looking since having to read a book online is a P.I.T.A.

I've had a tab open to their free learning page and checked it almost daily for the past 4 years or so. (First order was from Dec. 2014.)

I think it's time to finally close that tab. . .

It seems Packt's free learning has had some changes this year.

Now there are free videos instead of just eBooks.
But more importantly, now it seems you don't get free downloadable eBooks anymore. You only get HTML access to the books. :'(

I just got another email reminder about this and it says the deal ends "Midnight on Sunday, 3 March" but doesn't specify which timezone.

And I can't get the behavior to have middle-clicks close tabs.

I didn't know that was a thing, but I just tried it and it works for me.

All of the chrome extensions work on it now?  When last I checked, I wasn't able to use some of them, which is why I dropped it.

I haven't tried them all, but I assume that Chrome extensions work for Chromium-based browsers.

Brave has been my browser of choice on Android for a couple of years now. But it has been a little over a year (again) since I last tried out Brave on PC and I have to say I like the direction it is heading.

It is now definitely based on Chromium (maybe it always was, but in the past I wasn't sure about that), so all the Chrome extensions work for it. Also it has Private Windows (incognito mode) with Tor built-in for extra privacy.

I also really like the idea of Brave Rewards/BAT. It is (or will be) almost like a built-in Patreon, where I'm rewarded funds (BAT) for viewing ads and then I designate which sites/creators those funds are sent to on either a one-time only or a recurring (monthly) basis.

I haven't ever really used Brave long-term on my PC. I may have to re-evaluate that decision.

Living Room / Coinbase Earn - Get Paid Crypto to Learn About Crypto
« Last post by Deozaan on February 27, 2019, 02:24 PM »
Learn a Little, Earn a Little

Coinbase recently (December 2018) launched Coinbase Earn:

Coinbase Earn allows users to earn cryptocurrencies, while learning about them in a simple and engaging way. The idea is for users to understand more about an asset’s utility and its underlying technology, while getting a bit of the asset to try out.

I received an email about it this week with an offer to receive about $10 worth of Basic Attention Token (BAT) for learning about BAT and the Brave browser (which I've mentioned here before). There were four "lessons" for me to take, each one consisting of watching a short video and answering a 1-question quiz, which took me about 2-3 minutes (each) to complete. The final one had me sign into my Coinbase account from the Brave browser instead of taking a quiz. I completed the whole thing (including installing Brave) within about 10-15 minutes.

Right now Coinbase Earn is invite only (with invites being controlled by Coinbase, so I can't invite you myself), but you can go to the Coinbase Earn site and check out each set of lessons and join the waitlist for each one that interests you.

Note: I am not being compensated in any way to share this information. I just thought some folks here may be interested in this opportunity to earn a little "free" cryptocurrency in exchange for learning about them.

General Software Discussion / Re: Password manager apps for browser and android

Enpass received an update recently which makes it much more friendly to use on Android. If it detects a login prompt, it will pop up a notification you can use to auto-fill the login details.

This is something LastPass has done for years on Android, but Enpass did not (which is why I said it was "not the greatest") until recently.

So now I'm much more happy with my Enpass experience on Android.

I've been using Enpass for a few years now on both PC (Windows, Linux) and Android. It's not the greatest, but it does the job, and it has a reasonable price if you want to pay for some of the "premium" features. I paid for it on Android, which I think was about $10. But I haven't paid for the PC version.

Their website is Enpass.io.

General Software Discussion / Re: Full Windows 10 on Raspberry Pi 3!
« Last post by Deozaan on February 14, 2019, 02:05 AM »
Yeah, I don't really have much hope or expectation that things will be vastly improved on the RPi 3B+.

I think the important thing is that (full) Windows 10 runs on ARM64 hardware. So while it may never be that it runs well on the RPi 3B+, it may be that other, more powerful devices, such as something from Odroid, can run it more smoothly. Or maybe some future hardware that hasn't been released yet. :D

I've been playing around with it a bit more. It's really too sluggish to be worthwhile for anything other than the novelty at this point. Maybe speeds will improve as better drivers are released for faster access to the SD card or possible GPU acceleration.

As I previously wondered, I ran into some problems trying to install updates because I ran out of space on the SD card. So Windows 10 prompted me to free up some space by visiting the Storage section of Settings, and that's where I encountered something really strange.

Somehow the OS thinks the drive is 32GB when it is only 16GB...

photo_2019-02-13_14-56-45.jpg

All that said, it was an interesting experiment and a fun diversion but I think I'm probably done with it (for now) because it is too sluggish to be usable compared to just running Raspbian or similar on the Pi.

well done :-)

Thanks!

I got a mouse connected and played around with some of the settings. There's no driver for the built-in WiFi chip, and I didn't find this guide with instructions on how to pre-configure the ethernet port to work until after I started flashing the image (which took 40-50 minutes), but I did manage to transfer the drivers onto the device using a thumb drive and got ethernet connected now.

Interestingly Windows activated itself automatically even though I didn't enter a license key or anything like that. I'm now attempting to download Windows Updates and we'll see if that will even work. It would be interesting to see if it will update from the version I installed (1803 build 17134.1) to a more recent version (1809) and still work properly. But I think that might not be possible in my current setup, since I used a 16GB microSD card for the installation and there's only 4GB of free space left.

And there's no GPU acceleration, so everything is fairly sluggish. Even so, it's kind of amusing to see running. There's something satisfying and amusing about getting something to run on hardware it was never really meant to run on. :D

It works!

I haven't tested anything yet. I don't have a mouse connected. But it just booted into the OS after I completed the initial setup using only the keyboard. And it works!

Yet another update: My earlier attempt(s) didn't work. I got BSODs or other lockups, or the USB device(s) stopped responding when I got into the setup. But it seems I was using a version of Windows which has since been confirmed not working.

I'm now flashing the image using a known-working version of Windows (17134) using the latest Core Package (1.3.0) which includes the USB drivers and latest UEFI files needed for things to work.

If all goes well I should have a working full Windows 10 installation on my Raspberry Pi 3B+ within about an hour or so.

You can. Just upload it as an attachment, but don't click the "insert attachment" link. It will appear as an attachment link at the bottom of the post.

I poked around a bit and put the driver files somewhere that seemed appropriate. Then I got the image flashed to the SD card.

I'm still waiting for the initial boot into Windows 10 to complete (or get to the setup) but I decided to plug in a USB keyboard just to see if there was any response. I'm pleased to report that we have signs of life! Pressing Caps Lock or Num Lock toggles the appropriate LED on the keyboard.

But it's getting late and I heard it can get stuck on the "getting ready" screen for 20+ minutes (it just got there as I was typing this). So I think I'll just leave the Pi running overnight and check on it in the morning.

The USB drivers have been released within the past several hours. But the documentation and/or tools haven't been updated yet with instructions on how to include them when flashing the image to the SD card.

It seems folks in the Telegram group are scrambling to get things to work. And there have been a couple reports there that USB devices (including the on-board ethernet) are working.

Shouldn't be too long, now.

Drag the windows into the corners/edges of the screen and Windows 10 will snap them into halves or quadrants of the screen for you.

The latest update on the driver is quoted below:

  • We sorted out MCCI release engienering’s build problems and we successfully built drivers on a clean system. (Lots of minor issues, but most important, we found that I’d forgotten to update the “packing list” that tells the automation the files that are part of the source tree. This is why we insist on doing release builds rather than releasing from developer sandboxes.)
  • Next step (maybe later today) is to put the drivers into a known-good SD card image in place of the ones that I did in Boston, and make sure the system boots up.
  • Logistics: license agreement has been dug out of our files, needs minor revisions, but should be easy. These drivers will be free for non-commercial use.

With luck, we might get through all the release gates by tomorrow evening
