Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Last night: A Story of Idiocy
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 22, 2008, 05:37 PM »
A story of idiocy (that is a word, right?)

If you have talked to me on AIM or MSN (or any other of my 5 thousand instant messaging accounts), you know that when I am working on a program that I get really P.O.ed really fast if something doesn't work the way I expect (or just doesn't work, for that matter).

To make a long story short (never mind that, after typing this I think that this ship has sailed), I was working a little on getting my Notepad clone (FastNote) working. The problem with me, is that I don't exactly pay attention to what I do. I will just screw with something until it works. After it works I will tweak and perfect it. And another problem: I have this extreme trouble with variables. Working with variables, making variables, spelling the word "variable"... ;D. I can't say why, it is just this weird problem.

Step 1:
So I am messing around, editing this stupid line of code and getting nothing but error messages. I am googling and copying and pasting and (for some reason) trying to get VB 6.0 code to work in VB 9.0... (obviously, to no avail). Nothing is working. I just end up screaming (literally) at the computer screen (multiple times).

Step 2:
I repeat this for about 2 hours...and then I realize my problem. And no, you won't believe how stupid it was. And no, it STILL did not fix my problem. But it got me farther than I was.

The problem: I didn't declare the freaking variable!!!

The new problem: I get an error saying that I cant put that declaration there (or some pointless reason). Because if I do at runtime the "variable may return a null value". But that was the problem- I WANTED a null value. The USER sets the value.

My logic: Now repeat steps 1 and 2. Maybe a few times, to make sure you get it wrong some more.

After several hours of confusion and yelling and IMing countless people for help (getting little done), I decided to take the code out. This is normal- SnapSuite has tons of code that is dormant, converted to comments for future repair (*cough* :P). But when I put the code up above the current lines, the error went away (bringing 3 new ones, but I knew what these meant). So I fixed those.

Now, I have this semi working, discombobulated...thing. And I keep getting errors. And I keep fixing them. And I end up with a whole new command...whatcha-mah-call-it. So get this (this is what the final version does):

When you click in the box [FastNote's edit box], the program turns on the variable. Then when you click save, it uses the variable. I don't know why this has to be this way, but it works and ... it works.

NOW, after 6 hours of working, yelling, and googling for stuff that doesn't help me, I have a semi-working Save function for FastNote.

Problem is, what about opening? :o

Living Room / Re: Suffering over USB

I have been pretty impressed with the eGo, it has a d/c in, but I never have used it; but it also has a USB cable that has two connectors on one end, and if the power output of the one port is not enough you can plug the 2nd one in for more juice, I have never had to do that I just thought it was good thinking to include it

My Maxtor OneTouch III 80GB USB hard drive has this same setup, but recently I now have to use both connectors to get it working (otherwise it beeps; it is more convenient I guess). Don't know why, used to run fine with just one (added data maybe...?)

While that is a valid point, some "iCandy" never hurts. You can probably adjust the views and settings to show whatever you want afterwards anyways.

versions of KDE for Windows and Mac OS X will be available in the future.

I love the KDE desktop environment! It is so interactive and has so many little cool things you can do with it. And the customization is just amazing. Hope it hits Windows (and Vista) soon! :)

As a couple of you have probobally noticed, I have already made use of the updater system (fixing a bug with the cleaning mechanism). Unfortunately, I have found yet another bug with CCleaner's launch system (where it opens the CCleaner GUI instead of running a silent cleaning). I am going to test out this new fix and see what happens (if it works, you should see another update available within a short while). The new update is now available.

-Brandon

P.S.: FYI - if you don't know how to check for updates and install them, all you need to do is run SnapSuite, and you will be notified if a new version is available. If you choose to install the update, it will do so automatically.

Remember that parents have less technical ways to make the routers biased to their PCs if they suspect something...

... or know how to read forums ;)

While you may have a point, I don't think my dad (as bad as this sounds) would think to try anything to see what the new internet slowdown was. He knows how to type, click, and turn it on. Thats about it. :P

And in addition to that, I am the family "tech guy" and have everything related to technology in my room. It isn't like he can come over and subtly mess with it (if he can tell what it looks like then that is a surprise in itself).

Thanks for the replies everyone! I went into the router's settings and over to the QoS tab, and made my PC (via MAC address) a "High" priority. Will be able to test it out tomorrow. :)

Living Room / Making a router biased to a certain PC?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 20, 2008, 06:55 PM »
Hi everybody!

I have a small home network going (wired/wireless) that I need to have primary access to (I do major (5+GB) file down/uploads, game server hosting, and other heavy net usage). However my dad, having gotten into the internet, has decided to take a seat in the Web 2.0 world, and eat the life out of any bandwidth I may be getting.

So I thought that, since his PCs are wireless and my primary PC is wired, I could tell the router to make wired PCs more priority than wireless, and therefore get back my share of the internet. Does anyone know of a way to do this? I have a Linksys WRT300N Draft N router, latest firmware.

I have some VERY exciting news :)!

I was tinkering around with VB's interface (common for me) and stumbled upon this list of options (and it just so happened I wanted to change a couple of them anyways). So I start looking around editing options...lalalala. On the last option tab I find settings to publish SnapSuite (I knew you could do it, but didn't yet know how). So I started messing with that, and noticed an updater feature (and began smiling like a crazed man).

30 minutes later...

I am now including (successfully) everything into one easy-to-use, VB managed installer. It installs .NET 3.5 too (if you don't have it yet) automatically!

I am going to finalize everything and will report back soon.

Living Room / Strange error messages, linked to card reader (help!)
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 18, 2008, 05:57 PM »
Hey everyone,

Been getting this freaking ANNOYING error message ever since I installed my Dynex card reader. I get 4 error messages (upon boot) and they sometimes appear randomly if I have a drive in one of the ports. It only happens during those times. The error is one of those "No disk" ones, with Cancel / Try Again / Continue buttons (clicking cancel gets rid of it).

If needed I can reboot and post a screen shot, but was hoping someone could give me a quick, jury-rig fix for it without needing one?

I just bought a dual layer compatabile DVD/CD/Lightscribe drive, and am planning on buying dual layer DVDs to burn my movies/backups onto. I found a pack of like 15 of them (don't remember the exact amount) at NewEgg for like $24.99 a few days ago.

wtf. are you talking about "frame rate hit"? O_o. Deliberately getting a single-core CPU is outright stupid, unless you're very very short on cash. And even if you don't run threaded software, well, dualcore makes your whole experience sooooo much smoother. Btw, QuadCores are quite affordable now, Q6600 very cheap (and overclockable), and the Q9450 being mad power right out of the box, but still reasonably priced.

Your motherboard is guaranteed to be LGA775, and if it was purchased relatively recently, it should work just fine with a core2 CPU.

Oh, and finally: Pentium-D consumes more power and is slower per megahertz than the core2 CPUs.

When I compare my dad's HP PC (is is about even, I have a couple better parts (sound and power supply) versus his dual core and slightly better (but not HD) graphics card, his always loses. Boot time, frame rate in games, program launching... it didn't exactly impress me.

I have been looking at quadcore CPUs but they are still out of any price range for anyone in my family atm (dad is in retired and now back in college and mom is now the primary source of income @ $~40k a year - down from about $120k a year - major change in lifestyle).

And yes, I am aware of the power consumption thing, but it doesn't bug me. A few bucks more a month (tops) isn't going to change much.

It's not even a Pentium D, it's a Celeron D. But I thought the D stood for Dual Core?

My mistake on the Pentium thing. But no, I thought the same thing a year or so ago but I guess they just decided to throw a D in for its name. I checked- its single core.

Why do you want/need so many USB ports? And why do you want to use up every slot on your motherboard? I know it's fun to upgrade computers, but is it really necessary to have something plugged into everywhere?
I ran out of USB ports. Litterally. I used every last one. Including the 2 on my keyboard! Hence the need for a USB card. I now have 5 total ports left, opposed to none. :) And for the PCI slots, I only had a PCIe 16x (GPU), a PCIe 1x (now my USB hub), and 2 PCI ports (sound card, TV tuner). I use my PC for everything now- I only leave it to sleep, eat, go to the bathroom and school. I can do just about everything sitting here.

Your reasons aside, when I build a new computer I focus on CPU, RAM, GPU, and HDDs. Those are the areas you want to spend the most money because most everything else (IMO) doesn't make much of a difference for the longevity of the system. And naturally with all those USB ports in use you'll need a good Power Supply and naturally a good motherboard to handle the high end GPU and CPU. But my point is that I focus on 3-4 things I want and then determine the rest of the stuff I need to be able to handle those 3-4 things.

I look only at a CPU when I buy a PC. I upgrade everything else afterwards. The only reason I went single core was simply because I don't want to go multicore yet. I don't see the point. (And I am one of those people that still compares GHz speeds, regardless of CPU type/cache/size etc)

Wow, I wasn't expecting any more than a couple posts when I got back from school. Heh.

I thought about getting a Core 2 Duo/Core 2 Duo Extreme (my dad has an HP with one) but I actually picked this particular eMachines PC because of its single core CPU. If I am going multicore, it is quad or above. :-\ The frame rate hit isn't worth it IMO (I don't run more than 2 hardware-intensive programs at once on a usual day).

I have a printout of the latest Radeon HD model (can't remember the model atm, too lazy to search through my growing pile(s) of crap to find it) from NewEgg, and I plan on getting whatever is the top-of-the-line when my bday rolls around again. As for driver bugs...what driver bugs? O_o? And my fan is whisper quiet. :tellme:

Living Room / Making a dream PC for cheap (as possible) - help anyone?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 17, 2008, 11:04 PM »
Hey everyone,

My goal here is 2 things: 1, see if anyone can help me finalize my PC (finalize meaning use all the ports the motherboard has available - all my PCI/PCIe ports are already used :P) by suggesting items that may be useful, and 2, to help other people get good deals on their computer upgrades.

As some of you may know, I have been burning an infinite hole in my pocket for the last few months in computer upgrades constant computer upgrades. Fortunately, I was able to get a decent gaming PC running for about $800 (the PC itself, a graphics card, RAM, monitor, 3 year warranty and Windows Vista Home Premium Anytime Upgrade).

But knowing me, that wasn't enough. I always want to be able to do more with my computer, no matter what it is. So I started browsing NewEgg and TigerDirect for things I might like, need, or be cool to show off (:P). After about another ~$1,325 in upgrades (totaling about $2,125), I am at my present day computer. However, I am still not happy (surprise surprise).

Despite the above amounts, I always search on at least 3 websites (the usual ones are, in order, NewEgg, TigerDirect, ClubIT, Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA) before I buy anything. I pay for about half of the upgrades myself, with the other half being either birthday/christmas gifts, or just random "I need this because ..." every couple months.

Right now I am looking for a good front panel 5.25" USB hub with as many ports as possible, and a front panel 5.25" temp/fan speed monitor (and controller?). I don't care who makes it, but money is the main issue (I have to wait 10 more months for my birthday to roll around again).

Anyone got ideas?

Exciting news!

SnapSuite now has an installer/uninstaller.

Pros:
Functions the same as my dev version. All working features are available.

Cons:
Forced install in C:\Program Files\SnapSuite 2008 (possibly able to change in future)

This installer will let you test out the main functionality that has been unavailable due to my own fault of simply uploading the core EXE and none of its "helper components".

I have been testing and tweaking code files and the installer while I type up this post, and everything appears to check out fine. Installs fast, makes the desktop shortcut correctly, launches, and the uninstaller is fast.

If you want to give it a go, grab it below (hey, that rhymed ;D)

FYI: ALSO, I am in the process of revamping the SystemCare GUI. If you want the normal GUI back from screenshots past, click the "Advanced" subtab (I am assuming that is a word...?). The new GUI is geared more tward people whom wish to bug me constantly on MSN asking "how do I do that one thing again with that cleaning thingy???" - now I can slam down on Caps Lock and declare "Open SnapSuite. Click SystemCare's tab. Then CLICK THE BIG FREAKING BUTTON" ;D

EDIT: I just wanted to clarify that the comment above is not about anyone here at DC. I just happen to collect many a friend when word gets around that you can fix PC problems. And since no one that I IM seems to RTFM for anything anymore (or even the little help text at the bottom of every tab...) I seem to get all the idiotic questions. Hence the above.

EDIT: PLEASE GET THE LATEST VERSION BELOW

Hey fellow DCers...

Here with a strange, possibly not completable, probably confusing-and-complex-to-answer question. Here goes...

I have a VB application with various tabs, items on the tabs, and everything working as planned. However, on some tabs I have lots of content, and on others I have next to nothing. What I want to do is when the user clicks a tab, ANIMATE the GUI to resize to the needed size (like Apple Software Update).

Private Sub MyTab_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyTab.Click
        On Error Resume Next
'I don't know what to put here
    End Sub

Anyone know how to do this? Or have anywhere to point me to? :tellme:

Here is a small visual update for what will most likely be the final layout for SystemCare.

It has changed dramatically, but this should allow most users to still understand how the new interface works without much (if any) effort.

PLEASE let me know if you want to see something changed! It takes 30 seconds to open VB and edit a GUI item.

Screenshot URL:

Note how the middle, long buttons ("Easy Maintenance Modes") are positioned under the programs that they control when clicked. :)

EDIT: Thanks tomos! :)

SnapSuite 2008 Visual Basic Edition Revision 2 Beta 2

(Download below)

Information:
This is the latest build of the VB .NET SnapSuite. It is an unscheduled build (aka "nightly build") but appears to be perfectly stable.

This is the same progress as the above post states, however it may contain additional bugfixes, features or developer-related GUI items.

This build is NOT intended for normal usage! It is for evaluation and testing. Many GUI items do not work and the program should not be used in an environment with valuable data. This program has been tested on Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows XP Professional Edition (32 bit for both). Other operating systems may not be compatible.

There are no known bugs at this time (excluding GUI items that lack commands).

Download (This build is NOT intended for normal usage!):

SnapSuite website refresh

Some news about what I will change with the website over the next couple months

As some of you know, I am taking a Media Technology class right now, and one of the major class applications (it is a Mac only class...) is Adobe PhotoShop CS2/3. I have a copy of CS3 on my computer here at home, but have no idea how to use it. The last couple days in class (I am very advanced and quick in getting up and running and having everything the way I want on computers, regardless of the operating system) I have gotten used to PhotoShop and am making some basic, but cool things. I plan to post some of these on the website, as well as use some of my knowledge to make some interesting screenshots. :)

Here is one of my assignments, but with some extra effects added in (I love to tinker :D). I plan to add this onto the website soon.
