General Software Discussion / Re: Does the browser Opera suck?
« Last post by Tinman57 on October 13, 2012, 06:48 PM »
Redirections of web sites are very common.  When a site changes it's address you will be redirected from the old address.  If an address has been taken over by another company (or user), they can put a redirect in the site to take you to whatever site they want you to see.  And then there's the hacked websites that redirects you to their hacked site.  It really don't have anything to do with what browser your using, just keep your anti-virus and firewall updated and beware of things that just don't look right....

Hmmmm, it wasn't actually a parachute "Jump", it was an aircraft disintegration.  lol
The Blackbird is an awesome aircraft.  I was half way down the runway doing a FOD walk when one took off on the same runway.  The pilot went full stick back right when he got to us and went straight up right over our heads.  He was so close that we all got some jet-blast.  I think it's the loudest aircraft I've ever encountered, and that says something considering I was in the A.F. for over 20 years.  lol  Anyhow, it just went straight up until it disappeared.  I was stationed with one of the Blackbird squadrons for 4 years and got the privilege of watching them take off just about every day.  Never got tired of seeing them.  You don't realize just how huge they are until you stand next to one.
I read a long time ago that the first test pilot to test the altitude capabilities of the Blackbird was given an astronaut badge after taking it into dead space.  I know the fuel is oxygenated, but how in the world can you control an aircraft without any air flowing over the control surfaces?  Methinks this was a little exaggerated.

When they first started this DNT BS I knew it wasn't going to work.  How did I know you ask?  Well let me tell you, you can't have the fox guard the henhouse, and that's exactly what was going on.  They "expected" the marketers/trackers to see your DNT request and abide by it.  Yeah, like that's going to happen......

Tell ISPs: No Punitive "Six Strikes" Plan -- Or We'll Take Our Business Elsewhere

Here it comes: After months of secret negotiations with the players who pushed SOPA, the major Internet Service Providers on the verge of implementing their "Six Strikes" plan to fight "online infringement".  With essentially no due process, AT&T, Cablevision Systems, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Verizon will get on your case if you're accused of violating intellectual property rights -- and eventually even interfere with your ability to access the Internet.  (You can contest accusations -- if you fork over $35.)

The Do Not Track standard has crossed into crazy territory
The advertising industry wants to change the definition of Do Not Track into something Orwell would be proud of. One influential member of the W3C working group says he's lost the energy to go on. Is it time to kill Do Not Track?

I just use Piky Basket for all my copying/moving of files & folders.  It integrates into file managers like Windows Explorer and Cubic Explorer.

-are you running XP, or did you mean PikySuite / CopyWhiz?
PikyBasket is impossible to download anywhere, and has not been updated for Vista/7/8.

Yep, I'm on an XP machine using Piky Basket, which is now copyWhiz.  Piky Basket is/was freeware.  I don't know about the new version, but the old version is awesome.

I do know that reading about economics and economic theories makes my head hurt.  My dad was a master of that stuff, it's what he did for a living, I could never really wrap my mind around it all.  We were just wired totally different.
I would think those economist with doctorates would mostly all be stinking rich.  They didn't get that doctorate from not knowing how to make money.  lol

Sorry to hear that you felt so depressed.

But if you have the concrete proof that Hayek's economic theories work better than those of Keynes, as you sound to have, write an economics paper and get famous. That will make you much less suicidal than the Pakistani guys.

And perhaps if you had read the whole post, you would have seen who the author was....  Either way, I still agree with his writings, Keynes or not.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friends,

I'm writing to ask you to help make our country a truer democracy. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) just introduced the Grassroots Democracy Act. It's the most ambitious set of ideas for “Citizen Funded Campaigns” that we have seen in many years.

Will you click here to read more and ask your member of Congress to sign on as a co-sponsor?

http://act.demandpro...&source=auto-taf

One of the most interesting aspects of the bill is the creation of what we're calling "Democracy Vouchers". Every voter would get a modest amount of money, in the form of a voucher, to designate to candidates who opt into a public financing system. These candidates would only be allowed to receive small-dollar donations and Democracy Vouchers.

Voters would get to choose which candidates to support with their vouchers, thereby keeping politicians reliant on ordinary Americans for their campaign funds -- not on the wealthy individuals and corporate interests that usually back campaigns.

Please click here to tell your member of Congress to co-sponsor this Democracy Voucher program and the broader Grassroots Democracy Act:

http://act.demandpro...&source=auto-taf

Democracy Vouchers would do so much to empower Internet activists like yourselves: Using forums like Reddit, thousands of Demand Progress members could band together to support a slate of candidates who were dedicated to causes like Internet freedom, civil liberties, and government reform.

These thousands of activists could designate their hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in aggregate vouchers to that slate of candidates, funding the bulk of their campaigns. They'd be accountable to all of you instead of to the less than .2% of Americans and the corporations who usually max-out to candidates -- and call in favors after they get people elected.

These fights are never easy, but the overwhelming majority of Americans -- both progressives and Tea Partiers -- recognize that Washington has been corrupted by the influence of big money. Democracy Vouchers are the sort of plan that we should all be able to get behind -- and if we do, we'll have reclaimed government from the narrow, wealthy interests that we know run Washington today.

Please click here to show your support:

Living Room / Promised Land
« Last post by Tinman57 on October 07, 2012, 06:33 PM »
Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovels, mount your donkeys and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land.

Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your donkeys, and light up a Camel. This is the Promised Land."

Today, Congress has stolen your shovels, taxed your donkeys, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land.

That realization is quite depressing. I was so depressed last night thinking about health care plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, lost savings, Social Security and retirement funds I called a suicide hotline.

I had to press 1 for English. I was connected to a call center in Pakistan. I told them I thought I was suicidal. They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck. Folks, we are in deep trouble.

A few closing thoughts:

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Election day is coming. I’m just sayin’….

Whoever controls the information is the ones in control.  Information is one of the most powerful tools.  If your only allowed to know what the government wants you to know, your in the dark, whether you know it or not.
The very first thing we did when we went into Iraq was to blow up all communications, including the AT&T building.  Cut off the information, cut off the head of the snake, no one knows what's going on or what to do.
This is exactly why I don't believe half the crap that I see on tv, hear on the news or read in the history books.  History was written by the winners, they're only going to tell you the good (or bad) that they want you to know, or mix in some truth with the lies to baffle you.

Security often is discussed in super-serious terms, using metaphors and analogies from the military or medical communities to underscore the gravity of the situation. But the truth is, some of this stuff is pretty funny, and the folks at StopBadware.org know this. To explain the way that attackers use compromised Web sites to infect unsuspecting visitors with malware, the group put together this video featuring actual human people dressed as Web sites.

More confusing stuff:

MPAA chief admits: SOPA and PIPA "are dead, they're not coming back."
http://arstechnica.c...yre-not-coming-back/

So is this classic Boiling Frog stuff where it looks like we won a tactical skirmish and then they sneak it in later?

Edit: First run of the net seems to be strong suspicion, with zero belief in the text of the announcement.

Well lets see......MPAA, AKA: Hollywood......Has lobbyist that dump millions of dollars into the pockets of our politicians..... The laws that they wanted didn't go through, but the politicians have already been paid......so they sneak it into another bill as a rider....  Hollywood is now happy that their millions paid off in the end.
Unfortunately this is pretty much the norm for anti-consumer/citizen laws.  History does repeat itself......

General Software Discussion / Re: find the sound file of this website
« Last post by Tinman57 on October 03, 2012, 04:52 PM »
At first I thought it was Pink Floyd, as they did do the original song, but then I thought it was possible that this is a very good cover. Without hearing the vocals that were cut from the version used on Moscow Classic, I can't really tell.

Thought it could be Shadow Gallery's cover, for a minute, but the heartbeat/clock sound isn't quite the same as theirs.

I am still thinking it could be a cover, but there are so many covers that I couldn't tell you which one, especially since I have no vocals to work with.

I have that Dark Side of the Moon CD and album (old album).  Anyhow, it's not the original Pink Floyd version, some kind of remake unless they sped up the song, it's a little faster on the clock effect than the original, plus some of the instruments sounds synthesized.

I do love that CD though, listen to it when I get all nostolgic....  "Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day."  Can't tell you how many times I partied to that album back in the day...

Pdf
hello!

pdf manipulation is really cumbersome, but I really need to do the following:

- identify text blocks (editable or not), tables, photos, etc (draw a rectangular around them)
- extract them in their original size (for photos) or take a screenshot of them in the best possible resolution
how can I do these?
thanks!
