...a little something from my homeland: Tangow

Thank you for that. If you have anything else from Argentina that you'd care to share, I would love to hear it.

I'm very sadly lacking in my knowledge of South American music. What little I know has mostly been filtered through Herbie Mann and Dizzy Gillespie.

But once you go beyond a bass player's knowledge of the various dance structures (and the three types of clave ;D) I'm totally clueless.

What's good from where you are that we should all be listening to? :)

I'd love some good science based toy ideas for kids all ages - not the gimmicky stuff, but stuff that will be fun while perhaps encouraging a passion for  knowing...

Most of the decent science kits I've seen are fairly expensive. This link has a bunch of great DIY science projects. Every so often, when I get bored, I'll do something off of this website. Quite a lot of fun, not to mention being educational.

Link: http://scitoys.com/

If you'd like to browse for something you can buy ready-made, take a look at this site. They carry almost every science kit you could want at all price levels.

Here's two interesting vids of Steffan Schackinger that a friend pointed me to. It features a fiddler/violinist by the name of Jane Clark, who comes from Limerick Ireland.

Mssr. Schackinger doesn't give her a huge amount of room to show us what she can do (i.e. he tends to overdo the flash and hog the stage) but what you can hear is quite good. Her string tone is sweet. I would call her playing style more tasteful than virtuosic, but that's hardly a bad thing. Especially if you're getting a little overwhelmed by the likes of Anna Phoebe or Lucia Micarelli.

And it's always nice to watch a musician who is so obviously enjoying herself just playing music.

Check it out. Very talented fiddler. (And not too hard on the eyes either! ;D)

I am going to take you off the beaten path with some of these.  ;)

april: Marvelous selections.

I was especially impressed by Godspeed You Black Emperor. GYBE was a new group for me, and that's something that doesn't happen all too often.

With taste like yours, please feel free to take me off the beaten path anytime you like.

Here's another woman with an amazing voice: Karen Matheson of the band Capercaillie. Try these two for starters.

Easiest way to fix it is to download a nice little utility called Unlocker and have at it. :)

Get it here:  http://www.download....2248_4-10493998.html

Publisher's description of Unlocker

Ever had such an annoying message given by Windows: Cannot delete file: Access is denied. There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use or the file is in use by another program or user. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. Unlocker is the solution. Unlocker is an Explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file or folder to get rid of error message such as error deleting file or folder, cannot delete folder: it is used by another person or program.

Whenever i get tempted to set up a DNS or mail or file server in house again, i go get some fresh air and wait till it passes.

Sure. If you're going to do it with raw packages. (Although that's still the best way to really learn how something works, as I'm sure you know.)

But why reinvent the wheel (other than for the experience) when there are so many people who will be happy to give you a kit with all the parts and plans for free?

Take a peek at http://bitnami.org

They have preconfigured stacks that run just about anything you could want. Most of them are available for Windows, OSX, and Linux so you can be as "agnostic" as you'd like. Bitnami caters to all trade. ;D

I'll agree with you about setting up your own DNS for anything less than several hundred users. It's easier to just contract with something like UltraDNS and be done with it.

I'll also agree with you (for the most part) about hosting your own e-mail since maintaining good security and spam protection on a mail server can quickly become a full-time job.

But for everything else, why not install your own? File servers are a piece of cake if you have an even moderate amount of technical acumen. Same goes for most web servers, web apps, gateways, and routers. Even configuring a security appliance becomes pretty straight forward when you use something like Untangle Gateway.

Perhaps you're just feeling a little tired?  :)

Is this happening under Vista? On my main XP machine I've got three partitions on the primary HD, four more on my secondary, and two each on two externals. I have display hidden and system  options on, and I'm logged on as Administrator, but I'm still not seeing anything resembling what you're seeing in your root.

By the way, isn't this thread about why DRM is so bad and not the legality of AnyDVD?

You can't divorce the issue of legality from any discussion about DRM. DRM is a legal issue.

Being able to circumvent DRM by installing what amounts to a benign rootkit is in, IMHO, sorta missing the point.

Excellent! - We actually have 'mouse' birds here but nothing like the 'catbird'... ;D

We have catbirds here in New England but no mouse birds.

They're called that because of their unique neee-yah! call, which sounds something like a cat (if you've been out drinking) I suppose.

They also make a lot of other bird sounds, so they're something like a mockingbird, except the catbird apparently makes up its own vocalizations, and does not truly imitate other birds.

BTW: Our catbirds don't look anything like that either. ;D

It would be nice if the DRM licenses were not so one-sided. If you read them, they basically boil down to the following:

Plain Language DRM Terms:

1. We own everything, including the content you think you just purchased.

2. This is all about our granting our granting you permissions, not rights. We do not acknowledge that you have any rights in the matter.

3. You have purchased nothing more than a vaguely defined 'temporary permit' to use this content in such ways, and under such terms, as we alone shall dictate.

4. We may change any of our terms at any time, for any reason, or no reason at all.

5. We are not required to inform you of any changes we make to this agreement.

6. You are still bound to our most current terms of use regardless of whether or not you are aware that we have changed anything.

7. You agree that we may modify, or require you to accept changes to your system in any we we deem necessary to protect our interests.

8. You agree not to hold us liable for anything bad that happens to you as a result of anything we do - even if we knew about it in advance.

9. You agree to allow us to hold you fully responsible for anything bad that we feel has happened to us as a result of anything you do - even if it was unintentional.

10. You agree that we shouldn't be required to show you actually did something wrong before we initiate legal actions, or seek a judgment against you.

11. You agree you won't try to figure out how our software works, even if you need such knowledge to repair any problems we caused on your system.

12. You agree not to bad-mouth us to anybody, no matter what.

13. You agree never to sue us.

14. You DO agree, however, that we can still sue you.

15. It is an established fact that every sentient entity in this, and in every other, universe. intended to buy the product governed by these terms. Therefor, whoever accepts these terms also agrees to have UNLIMITED financial liability in the event of a lawsuit. You agree that your innocent enjoyment of the Blackout album may initiate a chain of events that could cost us "Beel-yons and Beel-yons" as Carl Sagan would have said. If that happens, we expect you to pay us that amount - even if Brittany's latest attempt at a comeback turns out to be a total bust, as expected.

16. You agree that our license terms trump all international conventions, laws, and legal precedents. The same rule applies to the laws found in the place where you live. If we decide to come after you for something, you agree to waive all the legal rights you have by way of citizenship or residency in any country, state, or locality. Furthermore, we get to pick the court of jurisdiction. (And you may rest assured we will find a judge that is sympathetic to our position - even if we have to go all the way to Marshall Texas to do it!)

17. These terms are not negotiable

18. If you don't agree to everything we say (now or in the future), your only recourse is to return our product to the place you bought it and try to get a refund.

19. Since they probably won't take it back because you opened it (otherwise how would you know you didn't agree with our terms) you can request a refund directly from us. However, we reserve the right to institute a set of conditions on returns that makes it virtually impossible for you to do so.

20. People that violate this agreement are hurting everybody. DRM is for your protection. Please help us by reporting any violations you may encounter on the part of others.

Sorry. I've been a musician for years, and much as I'd prefer people would buy my music, I still can't swallow what the "intellectual property" legal crowd is doing. People swipe stuff all the time. I've had my own stuff swiped as well. But even so, I can't see the benefit of treating everybody as either a criminal, or a potential criminal. It doesn't seem to be a workable or fair way to address the so-called problem.

Music is music. That's never been the problem. Trying to monetize it has been. And attempting to wring every last possible penny out of every single note is not only foolish, it's also impossible.

----------------------

epaalx - I'm curious. You seem to accept, as read, the whole industry position on DRM. Are you directly involved with any of this (i.e are you an attorney, musician, industry employee, etc.), or are you just sold on the argument the industry is making? :)

Know somebody that gets stuck upgrading PCs, or fixing them when they're broken?

There are lots of "computer" tool kits out there. Most of these kits offer tools of dubious quality. And many of them have a lot of useless things included. (How many of us really need a soldering iron in our kit?) So unless you decide to spring for something from a company like Jensen, you're pretty much stuck with consumer grade junk.

Fortunately, there is an inexpensive kit that offers a useful selection of decent quality tools. It's called the Kronus™ 25-Piece Mini Tool Set, and it's available from RadioShack. It's currently on sale for $11.99 USD through 12/25/2008. Regular price is $16.99 USD.

These tools will never be mistaken for something from a company like Xcelite or Jensen. Still, the quality of this set is way above what you would expect at this price point. And the nifty little storage box it comes in is a definite plus. I've seen $50 sets that weren't as nice.

I bought a bunch of these to leave at various client sites for those times when I needed to do something quick, but didn't feel like lugging my full "Go Box" inside. This tool selection easily handles about 90% of what I need to do. If it included a small LED flashlight and a small "retrieval" tool it would handle almost everything.

Kronus™ 25-Piece Mini Tool Set

Kronus.jpg

This Kronus™ 25-piece mini tool kit features pliers, cutters, tweezers, a bit-driver, sockets, screwdrivers and more, packed in a convenient, latched carrying case. Chrome-vanadium steel construction provides durability and rust resistance on select tools. Kronus™ tools by RadioShack compare with the best in the industry. Precision-crafted and ruggedly constructed of durable materials, they're built to last. And Kronus tools are backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Plus, they're engineered to help you get the job done right, with comfort, convenience and ease. So, whether you're working on precision electronics projects, hobbies or household wiring needs, you'll know your Kronus tools are the only ones you'll ever need.

    * Chrome-vanadium steel construction provides durability and rust resistance on select tools (with †)
    * Comfortable, cushion-grip handles on pliers and cutters

What's in the box

    * 1 x 5" Mini Long-nose Plier
    * 1 x 4-1/2" Mini Diagonal Plier
    * 1 x Stainless Steel Tweezer
    * 1 x 1/4" Drive x 3" Extension Bar
    * 4 x 1/4" Drive Sockets (5, 6, 8 and 10mm)
    * 3 x Philips Bit Set (#1, #2, and #3)
    * 3 x Slotted Bit Set (5/32", 3/16", and 1/4")
    * 3 x Torx Bit Set (T-10, T-15 and T-20)
    * 1 x 1/4" Socket Adapter
    * 4 x Slotted Screwdrivers (1.2, 1.8, 2.4 and 3.0)
    * 2 x Philips Screwdrivers (#0 and #1)
    * 1 x Trifold Bolow Mold Case

BTW: To "complete" your tool kit, add these in and you'll be all set, and still be at or under $25.

Hobbs Innovation retrieval tool. Hobbs makes 3 different retrieval tools. They cost between $3 and $4 dollars depending on which you want.

Add in a Hampton 29432 LED Telescoping Flashlight w/Magnetic Tip (about $9 USD).

You can get both of these at Cyberguys or from your favorite tech supplier. Here's the links if you want to get a closer look:

Quite pedagogic, it seems. But expensive, if one cannot settle with the free version:

Curt: I liked your phrase "quite pedagogic." ;D

But you're right. I tried it, and much as I wanted to like it, I still couldn't see what it brought to the party. It's visually impressive, but to my mind it falls more under the "clever hack" rather than the "useful tool" category. I personally think the claims made for it are more than a little inflated.

A year or so ago, you'd run into websites that were using TheBrain as a sort of front-end. Lately, however, I'm not seeing any. Makes me wonder if I'm not the only one that found the concept cool to think about, but lacking in practical applicability.

Now maybe I'm too stupid to grasp what TheBrain is all about, but so far as I can tell, there isn't much Emperor to be found inside that slick clothing.

Still, I've heard this piece of software mentioned in reverential tones in some of the forums I frequent, so I thought I'd bring it up since it touches on some of the topics under discussion here.

Question: Has anyone done any non-trivial project with TheBrain? Or can anyone point us to someplace that's doing something useful with it?
