General Software Discussion / Re: Converting Spreadsheet to Table in forum
« Last post by tomos on May 12, 2007, 06:31 AM »
Then you would have to do a find & replace of all the <'s with ['s and then all the >'s with ]'s
thats the easy bit methinks  :)

First you would have to convert it to html, somehow. That is best done manually or in an html editor, as it is the only way it will look good. Using the 'export as html' option can have some bad results.

Make sure it is stripped of all extra code that is unnecessary, such as font sizes & colors, table & cell width info, etc.
I think I'm out of my depth there already app  :(

Well I just had a look at the html version as exported from OOo, jeez, what a load of code  :)

Tried stripping out some stuff (find, replace)
but definitely starting to think this might be more work than it's worth

Nope that's definitely beyond my capabilities ...

When you say "First you would have to convert it to html ... in an html editor"
Would i have to go back to school to figure that one out ?  :tellme:  :D
Would it be a very time consuming process?

General Software Discussion / Converting Spreadsheet to Table in forum
« Last post by tomos on May 12, 2007, 02:29 AM »
I'm trying to convert a (LARGE) spreadsheet file to a Table that will post here

e.g. from the Mini-Review Tamplate
App NameName of app reviewed
App URLLink to the app's homepage
App Version ReviewedVersion being reviewed

which actually is

App NameName of app reviewed

App URLLink to the app's homepage

App Version ReviewedVersion being reviewed

I was wondering, using some sort of find & replace &
some way of adding prefix/suffix to lines
could I convert the seperators in a .CSV file to the appropriate table "td" thingys  :)

I'm sorry the only way I can show this is as code -
otherwise it forms crazy tables & cant be read properly.
Makes it hard to read but you could cut & paste it elsewhere

I thought I was being very smart -
I saved file as .csv file and tried to use
instead of a comma as a separator.
But
only the first character "[" came through

But got me thinking
would there be a way of
prefixing each line with "
"
suffixing each line with "
"

and then using some sort of find & replace function to replace the separator with ""
(I could do that in Freehand but I'm sure some text editors would have it)

I would then at the end of each line have "
"
where i think the first two "" would have to be removed
but
I could live with deleting that "by hand" if I could get the rest automated to a certain extent ...

I can live without this but found it an interesting challenge - if you do too, please help if you can  :D

PS I did try pasting html table in post but it looses format, see dc thread here

[EDIT: solution I used is here, post#27/30  thanks, crono!

jbunch,
I hope you don't mind
I thought your comments/ideas were worth quoting here

I've been looking for something similar off and on for years.  See my second discussion comment on my own post to Askville.com http://askville.amaz...equestId=1760063#top (it's all about me ;)).  I don't have the countdown timer, but it would fit well.

Quote from: jbunch -
Having had time to sleep on it, here's my vision of how it should work (or how I should work). Two panels, on the left is the editable list of tasks, on the right is an Outlook-style schedule of today and maybe the next business day. You drag the tasks that you hope to accomplish from the left to the schedule in the order you hope to perform them. If you think a task deserves more time, you can drag it larger. You can insert "reward" tasks (15 minutes of a game, surfing, etc.) and/or expansion time where appropriate.

When the first task of the day is scheduled to start (hopefully right away), you are prompted to start the timer for that task and add any notes that might help you remember what you meant to do. Shortly before that task is scheduled to end you are prompted to wrap it up (to send a status email, for example). When time is up, you are prompted again to add any notes for that task and also to start the timer for the next task. It will also have a "finished" checkbox so you can take items off the to-do list.

If you need more time, of course, you can snooze it. If the next task is reward/expansion time, you can skip it and the next task for the day is brought forward. There should also be a "stack". If scheduled yourself to call a customer and end up leaving a voice mail, you can "push" the task (let's call it A). This will bring forward the next task for the day (let's call it B). If the person calls you back during task B, A can be "popped" back and the B task goes back to being the "next one". All this time one timer or the other is running. If task B has used up its planned duration before you get the return call for A, task C is brought forward, etc.

The expansion time is there because there is always some unplanned activity that pops up in the middle of the day. Should you get lucky and not have that emergency, there should be a separate to-do list that is for things that have no deadline but you need to be reminded of anyway (clean the desk, etc.) that you can pick from.

Should you exhaust your list of tasks lined up for the day, you should be prompted with the whole two-pane list and schedule so you can either drag items from the next day, or pick a new task from the main list.

Reading this back, I sincerely doubt there is an app like this, but would appreciate a pointer in a close direction. Chances are good that I might end up writing this myself. Or submitting a request to DonationCoder. Thanks again.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: List of disc catalogers

Will we ever find a good solution? (rethinking how to solve this problem)

2 things/ideas

1) mouser has offered some webspace for html version

2) had the idea when exporting spreadsheet to .csv, instead of using commas, to use the necessary terms
( - {/table} or whatever) so that it will read as table in a post here.
will try that at weekend

Tomos, you can create such a table with saving to .html in OpenOffice. You only have to copy the result into the modify-Message Window.
Otherwise there are tools like http://www.winload.d...9.7.html?empfehlung2 or http://www.hidekik.c...sv2html/csv2html.cgi to convert .csv-files.

no joy with those other links either ...

Been trying out the V1.1 Beta

It's looking very good -
going back to Josh's first post,

I, ideally, want one that does all the basics (calendar w/ reminders, todo, contact management) plus some advanced features (encryption of data, backup system, import from programs like thunderbird).

the only one I'm not sure about is encryption of data
everything else is there,
it imports .csv files, backups, even now customisable shortcuts.

They're planning a new "column" for the ToDoList by which can be filtered which seems to suit my next-action requirment.

a hard link of a file should clone your file
change one, both should change.

There's a few threads about it here

soft and hard links in ntfs
keeping/saving cloned files

unfortunately it doesnt work on my machine for some reason  :(

In the v3 beta, you already can assign multiple categories (or tags) to a task. Current beta allows filtering just by one of them, but one of next betas will allow more complex filters.
-vradmilovic (May 10, 2007, 03:03 AM)
I'm very happy to hear that  :-*

Actually,
I'm just after getting the new Agenda at once beta and haven't had a chance to have a decent look at it yet.

Had a look at EssentialPim screenshots and have to say I'd find it difficult that you cant see the various aspects at one time - in particular the todolist and scheduler.
Or
maybe you can & they just didnt show it ...

anyone tried CDBurnerXP Pro
I used it for a while a couple of years ago
but gave up for some reason i cant remember now (something to do with multisession burns i think)

I believe they've rewritten it but new beta is not yet available
http://www.cdburnerxp.se/index.php

Another possibility is Deepburner - user reviews here:

dunno where i got that quote from in previous post  :tellme:

maybe copied it before you edited it??

anyways, not important ...

6. General Software Discussion
We normally just have one "Software Discussion" section in our newsletter, but in the last month there have been so many noteworthy discussions about software that I've split up the posts into two sections.  This section has the more general discussions where multiple programs are referenced.
-mouser

It's always good to see an overview mouser  :-*

a proposal
but
not wanting to complicate things tooo much for you  :)

how about including threads that are older but "hopping" again
what i had in mind was Superboyacs Notetaking thread & the one on image organisers which were both pretty busy in the last (i think) month or so

yes, the bullets should be in, it gives a nice aligned layout..

P.S. tomos, maybe you should try this program for marking screenshots. it took a while for me to find out the hazy circle.. :)

yes  :)

actually i just saved the image from their website
and modified it - it's some sort of greyscale gif that doesnt seem to accept "grey".
Odd -
I could only seem to draw on it in a "hazy" bitmapped grey kindof way

but I didnt try very hard  -
just had another look, using the brush tool (PShop) did the job more assertively  :)

CV_04_finishing_touches copyog2.gif

Maybe I should have tried Screenshot captor to modify it ...

I like agenda at once
cause you can see list notes scheduler & calender all at one time.
Loads of shortcuts, fairly logical interface whatever.

Theres beta testing going on at the moment - dont know how long thats going to last.
http://www.datalands....php/board,20.0.html

It doesnt seem to do contact management,
I dont know how many of the (many) requests they're going to implement.

Personally I find myself getting more & more frustrated with the outlining method of most PIMs/Todo lists

Things get lost in subtasks of subtasks -
I like to be able to organise in that manner but
I would love some sort of tagging system or being able to say mark X and Y etc. from different projects as next-tasks
and
then being simply able to see X and Y etc. at one time
and
then add them as appropriate to your scheduler/calender

Am i making sense...

I'm going back to index cards if i dont find something like that
Thinking along the lines of -
for example - six small indexcard boxes
maybe one for each of five projects and one for miscellaneous

If I have them all in a row i can then see at one glance the next-action-task from each category.
And hopefully take appropriate action  :P

 :)

Times doesn’t read well on-screen and lacks typographic subtleties such as non-lining numbers. Because it’s available on virtually all computers and designed to be readable on on-screen, try Georgia instead.

does anyone know if Georgia is on most Macs too?

Very helpful tips
and
a helpful reminder  :-[

I was a bit surprised though with the final version -
have a look at these

original final version from site:
-
CV_04_finishing_touches copyog.gif

I find this aspect of layout a bit distracting
-
CV_04_finishing_touches copy.gif

With a possible final version so
-
CV_04_finishing_touches copy3.gif

(I moved the bullets in as well - there's a bit of a debate about that in the first few comments there)

Thanks for the very prompt reply Tobias!

10946
as you can see, I'm thinking about this a lot   :D

as i say,
i will download the programme (SFFS),
but asking for help-advice again anyway ;)

With the "Partial File Updating" -
Lets say I do an incremental/versioned backup of a file every day using that feature.
Presumably I can go back to the version saved, say, 10 days ago.

Is this difficult to do - has anyone had any experience/s here or tested it in that way?
10947
any ideas if it has advantages over ToDoList ?
10948
surfulater is the reason I dont use opera anymore
I miss it but ...
10949
Deltacopy is a reliable free rsync app for windows, and can do local as well as remote sync:

http://www.aboutmyip...MyXApp/DeltaCopy.jsp

i think I'm correct in understanding that this does "Partial File Updating" as well ?
and
"local" backing-up, ie to external drive or to different partition ..

yet, you ask -

what i really want however is rdiff-backup natively for windows (incremental backup with restore per delta) - anyone know of a package out there?
-nontroppo

I'm afraid
I don't understand the sequence between quotes one and two -
what is missing from DeltaCopy?

is it some restore functionality?
10950
I've been using SFFS for years and it is a very nice application and works very well. Tobias provides great support and the product is being continually improved. I can't see where it does partial backups though and can't see how it can, as is?

For those who haven't found out whether Super Flexible File Synchronizer (SFFS) can do partial backups, or if it uses delta synchronization technology, see : http://www.superflexible.com/partial.htm

Basically : "In your profile, make the following checkmark: Use Partial File Updating, which is on the Advanced tab sheet in Advanced Mode."

does that mean that all your backups are then done using Partial File Updating,
or
can you have some backups done using Partial File Updating, and some done the "normal" incremental way (or just synched) as well

i.e. does the "profile" refer to everything or just a particular backup?
(havent tried it out yet ... must!)

[EDIT: presumably just to particular backup
yes,
going by Zaines review "profile" = one particular backup]
