Just an update: Archivarius has been updated to version 4.05. This is noteworthy because my index has been optimized and now sits at a hair over 1GB instead of 2
wow, that's a pretty big change... Thanks for the info Darwin.

General Software Discussion / Re: Desktop Sidebar
« Last post by Armando on June 08, 2008, 03:19 PM »
Tried it  2 years ago, and found it buggy. Just reinstalled it. Seems less buggy, but keeps stealing the focus. Can't even change the options without minimizing the app to the tray -- the sidebar steals the focus constantly. I could probably fiddle with it, but... Not today. Unless someone has some good advice/quick fix ?

Found Deals and Discounts / Paragon Drive Backup 8.5 super offer
« Last post by Armando on June 06, 2008, 07:54 PM »
Paragon offers its "Drive Backup 8.5" (updateable!) at 9,95€. That's 75% off.

The page is in French -- it looks like a France/European offer, but I didn't see anything officially saying that other countries couldn't benefit from the offer.

Anyone?

Yes, nirsofts recent files utility is excellent! And it can produce lists through command line, so perhaps there's some way that FARR can read the output? At least when the new HTML-stuff is in place it should be possible.

That would be a great idea. And BTW, like some others, I found there's too much overlap between RecentX and farr to justify another expense.

Thanks. I was asking because my dad overwrote an important finance file yesterday and he wanted to know whether it was possible to get back... or not. So I guess it's not possible?

What happens when a file is accidentally overwritten (replaced) by a file with the same name? Is it actually physically over written, or is it still there somewhere on the hard drive (hence possible to recover)?

Well, the way I see it is that it prevents the pane from popping in whenever you touch the tab by mistake (reduce an autohide toolbar delay to 0ms , and it keeps getting in the way if your mouse happens to travel a bit too far in a direction or another). It could be a user option.

But the popping out could be faster, since that has no real purpose that I can think of.

I was going to bed and just saw that... It seems like a very nice idea. If it doesn't slow down the interface, of course. That also probably means less grid space, and smaller html panes if several grid are opened vertically. So, in a way, the current main-window docked one could still be interesting as an option. Just some quick thoughts.

Edit : still thinking about the name stuff. Really don't know. I've come to like SQLNotes. GordianNotes ?  ;)

IMO, SQLNotes already has a lot of visual "capabilities" : gantt charting, pivot charts and table. Mindmaps/concept maps are coming soon.

I've always wanted to try personal brain. I'll try to give it a shot during the weekend, if possible.

Holy cow, vitalyb. Too bad I'm not into gaming or anything like that. Maybe I should start, it's getting quite wild.

EDIT: X1 found the test comment that I had created after I posted this - doesn't actually show the comment field though, so it's a bit weird having a document highlighted without the word searched for evident in the preview...

Yes, I know, weird. There are also other weirdnesses in X1, but all in all, it's fast. I actually find it faster than Archivarius  for multiple terms searches (or complete phrases) -- especially the first search : subsequent searches are quicker, which is expected. Once archivarius has done its first search, it's actually almost as fast as X1.

Note that I haven't installed X1's last version. I didn't find the change log compelling. I might give it a try anyways. Shouldn't do anything bad, hopefully.

Living Room / Re: Why I could never buy a Dell or HP computer (rant)
« Last post by Armando on June 03, 2008, 12:12 AM »
When I bought my Dell Inspiron 6400 (consumer) 2 years ago, it came with a bit of crap, but not too much. I just uninstalled that useless apps (starting with McAfee -- yeah, that one was a tad tricky) and started building from there.

I guess that I could've wiped the drive and start from scratch, but... I didn't. All in all, I think it was quicker this way, and except for my RAM problems (not windows related), I haven't got any windows related problems.

Am still running the same windows install I was, 2 years ago.

Of course, if you'd give me the choice I'd choose a laptop with just windows and drivers... nothing else. But I'm not necessarily willing to pay the big $$$ for that...

BTW : it's usually possible to order the windows CD from Dell -- yes, you can do that, and it's often free : I did it, but never used it. (Of course, I don't know anything about Vista's activation scheme, etc. That would probably be a pain...)

yeah, I'll certainly try to talk him into it in a few weeks... ;)
As one of the main beta testers, I won't push him to hard though : his main priority right now is probably to get SQLNotes out of beta (by adding the calendar and a few other important features, and... squashing the bugs)!

Find And Run Robot / Re: Instant infos via aliases?

I think the only reason to support some note taking is because it would be easy and would be well suited for people who do NOT already use a proper notetaking application.

(ps. for those who use a notetaking application -- what would be nicer is a plugin for FARR that interfaces to their existing note taking application!)

Both points make a lot of sense.

I was already thinking of asking Pierre (SQLNotes developer) if there could be a way to create a farr plugin to send notes directly to SQLNotes, and, even more so, to directly search SQLNotes' database. It should be possible, probably even more when SQLNotes will use an SQL Server Back-end.

I would be interested to know :

1- who would use such a note taking feature (apart from the "searching for lines in a file" function)
2- why would one use it
3- how much would one use it

(basically, how would it fit into one's workflow and current application setting/"ecology")

The reason why I'm asking these questions is that there are already a lot of note taking applications around. I currently use something myself and was trying to figure out if I'd need something like that from farr (apart, like I said, from the "searching for lines in a file" function, which I could use for quick searches). Probably not, but maybe ... I'm always opened to new solutions.

Of course, there must be many people wanting such a feature, otherwise it wouldn't be in the making!  :) I'm just curious about how would one use that, and how it would fit into one's workflow and current "application ecology".

i use the following alias :

regex mask :
^(https?://)?(([0-9a-z_!~*'().&=+$%-]+: )?[0-9a-z_!~*'().&=+$%-]+@)?(([0-9]{1,3}\.){3}[0-9]{1,3}|localhost|([0-9a-z_!~*'()-]+\.)*([0-9a-z][0-9a-z-]{0,61})?[0-9a-z]\.[a-z]{2,6})(:[0-9]{1,4})?((/?)|(/[0-9a-z_!~*'().;?:@&=+$,%#-]+)+/?)$

Wow. I'll have to think about that one... :-[
